Question:
I have heard of trailer Forward self adjusting brakes. I am trying to understand if I need to do a backup procedure to self adjust them on occasion to keep the brakes adjusted or will they self adjust with normal Forward braking? I understand the initial manual adjustment.

Expert Reply:
Self-adjusting trailer brakes like the Axle Technology # AKEBRK-7L-SA and # AKEBRK-7R-SA do require an initial manual adjustment as you noted but after that they will automatically maintain the correct pad pressure with normal driving.
The auto-adjust works whether you are driving in a forward direction or in a reverse direction. The automatic mechanism uses a fine-toothed gear that can make precise adjustments and saves you the hassle of re-adjustment after initial break-in.
