Self-Adjusting Brake Doesn't Require Routine Adjustment

Standard electric brake assemblies require manual adjustment of the brake shoes over time to provide longer-lasting and more efficient braking performance. With self-adjusting brakes, the brake shoes are always properly aligned, so there's no need to manually adjust the brakes after the initial adjustment. As a result, you get optimum performance without having to take the time to continually perform this type of maintenance.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

This brake assembly meets the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. This brake assembly underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. This brake has also been tested by QAI for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

Automotive-Grade Friction Material

Each shoe on this brake assembly is lined with automotive-grade friction material for improved stopping performance and longevity. The friction material is fully bonded onto the surface of the brake shoe. This lining is custom-molded for a perfect fit. The edges are tapered to ensure long-lasting performance. This taper, along with the circular grinding that the lining undergoes, helps to prevent cracking and crumbling. This durability helps to prevent mechanical lockup, which can occur when brake shoes are excessively worn or broken.

The friction material is also SAE-N certified, which means that it is an environmentally safe product that complies with California and Washington regulations regarding the composition of brake pads. As a result, this material not only provides high-performance braking that can endure the test of time, but it is also environmentally friendly and safe for use throughout the United States and Canada.

Video Transcript for etrailer Electric Trailer Brake Assembly Installation

Today, our trailer will be installing the etrailer axle technology, electric trailer brake assembly, self adjusting for the right hand side. For 5200 lbs, 7000 lb axles. It is part number AKEBRK-7R-SA. It's also available for assembly on the left hand side, part AKEBRK-7L-SA. Here's a look at our new break assembly, what we're looking at here is the left hand side break assembly, but the right hand side installs in exactly the same manner. You can see it's an entire new assembly, new backing plate, new shoes, all new springs, a new self-adjuster, and a brand new magnet.

This is our quick and easy installation versus just repairing your worn out magnet or your worn out shoes. It's just a matter of unbolting the old one, putting the new one on, and connecting your new wires. It saves you a lot of time, a lot of effort, and money in the long run. Nice thing about this brake assembly that we have here today, is the fact that it's self adjusting, so once you do your initial adjustment once you install it you don't have to worry about adjusting it ever again. It'll take care of that for you. All right, first thing we need to do is take off our tire and wheel assembly.

Now we take off our tire wheel and set it aside. Now we need to take off our grease cap on our hub assembly. Use a screwdriver and just tap that in there to get behind it. Let's take off our inaudible 00:01:45 here on our nut, just pry it off and then we can move our nut. Okay, with our nut removed, we can now remove our hub assembly.

Once our hub assembly is off we can take off our outer bearing and out spacer washer here, and set those aside. We will be replacing our hubs and our bearings, so we don't need to worry about saving any of the bearings or removing the seal, so we'll just set this aside and have that out of our way. Now we'll cut our wires that go to our brake assemblies. Unwrap this so we can see what we're working with here. A little snip back here to get rid of the butt connector, we'll have a new one. You can see, this isn't a heat shrink butt connector, it's just a standard butt connectors.

We'll be replacing the heatring butt connector, so it'll be more weather proof. Now before we get dirty we're going to be need to clean off this grease. Just take a shop towel here and wipe it off our spindle. This is a good time to inspect your spindle too to make sure there's no degouging, cracks, or burns on it. Our's is looking pretty clean so far. Okay now that our spindle is cleaned off we can remove our brake assembly, here. I just want to point out that our brake assembly is covered in brake dust. You want to make sure you're wearing gloves when you're doing this because brake dust can be harmful to your health. There's 5 nuts that hold our brake assembly on to our axle. Okay, with all 5 of our nuts now removed, we can take our brake assembly, pull it off, and we can discard it. Right now, we can slide our new assembly on. Make sure we have our wires up and out of the way behind it, so they don't get pinched behind our backing plate here. Slide it on to our axle, line up our studs, push it on. You want to make sure your magnet is facing down towards the bottom, so if we did it like this you see it's no longer on the bottom. If we did it like this, it's off the side, so you want to have it as close to the bottom as possible. Right there is perfect for our application. So we'll take our nuts, we'll reinstall them. Now when we tighten these down, we want to make sure we go in a star pattern just like you would when you're tightening the down the lug nuts on a wheel. See you would do diagonally across, back, down, and then back up. You never want to do 2 that are next to each other at the same time. All right, now we're going to torque these down. Again, just like we did with inaudible 00:05:07 them down, we'll go in an alternating pattern. Okay, now that our new brake assembly has been torqued down we can make our electrical connections to the existing wires on the trailer. Now because trailer brakes utilize a magnet, it doesn't matter which wire goes to where. We'll take our existing wires here some, strip back some insulation, take two butt connectors. We have these available on our website, if you need to purchase some. Install them onto the wire and we'll crimp it down in a position. Since these are smaller diameter gauge wire, what I like to do is fold the wire back in half, on itself like that, so it's a little bit thicker and then we can crimp it down into our connector. Now we'll take our heat gun and we'll shrink our butt connectors. Okay, with these heat-shrinked butt connectors now heat-shrunk, we have a nice secure weather tight connection we won't have to worry about moisture getting in there causing corrosion and causing our trailer breaks to work inadequately. Now you have the option to reinstall your old hub assembly. But while you have it off it is a good time to replace it, so that is what we will be doing here. The hub assembly we will be using is part number AKHD-H65-7-2-K. Now we'll begin our installation, my first packing are wheel bearings. We'll start the inner one first. So we'll take a tub of grease, drop the bearing on down in there spin it around a little bit, get it nice and coated, then we'll start working our grease in our rollers. If we need to purchase any axle grease, we do have this available on our website. K, now that I'm pulling the intersection of the bearing and moving the outer section and it feels nice and smooth. What we're going to do, is we'll put some grease around the inside of it and we'll coat the outer portion of the bearing as well. We'll drop our wheel bearing into our hub, okay Now we install our grease seal, put it down into position into our hub, now you can use this seal installer if you have one. I don't have one large enough to do this, so I'm going to use the old fashion block wood trick.A stick on top of it, make sure it's sitting nice and flush. I'll tap it in with our hammer. As you an see that pushed our seal in nice and straight and didn't cause any damage to it. Now that our seal is fully installed I always like to take a clean shop towel with some brake parts cleaner and clean off our area, for our show to make contact, just in case there's any oil or grease from manufacturing on our hub assembly. We'll flip it on over and we'll work on packing our inner bearing at this time. Work all this grease on the outer bearing, just like we did the inner one. We'll set it aside, right there, all right so slide our new hub assembly onto our spindle. Now we can install our outer wheel bearing. Slide it into place. Take our washer hear, slide it onto position. Reinstall our nut, rotate our hub a little bit while we tighten the nut down make sure we have good free play in our bearing, we do. It rotates nice and smooth, that grinding noise you are hearing, it is our brakes shoes rubbing against our drum, that's normal. We have to adjust that here a little bit shortly. Now we'll reinstall our tab here which holds our lug nut in place. Now before we reinstall our grease cap I always like to take a little bit of grease put it in there just so if it needs to it can work its way into the bearings. Take our new cap, place it into our hub and tap it in. Clean off our excess grease, now I always like to put the wheel and tire back on the hub before we adjust our brakes, just so we can rotate the break assembly easier and get the proper feel. Now we'll tighter down our new lug nuts, we use the 13/16 socket, making sure we go in a cris cross pattern. We'll inaudible 00:11:12 our lug nuts once we have our trailer back down on the ground. Okay now that everything is installed we need to do our initial adjustment on our trailer breaks. Once we have them adjusted properly, we don't ever have to worry about adjusting them again because they are self-adjusting. We'll take out this back cap here. I'm going to be using a break spoon. We have these available on our website if you would like to purchase one, so I'll adjust our star wheel adjusted down while rotating the wheel make sure our brakes are starting to grab more. Once we have light drag on the brakes, we know they are adjusted properly. Okay, we have light drag now as you can see I'm putting a little bit of effort into the tire to move the wheel assembly. Once we're right about here, our breaks are properly adjusted and we can reinstall our dust cap. All right, now we're going to spin our wheel and have our assistant activate our brake controller on our tow vehicle, and you can see our brakes are now working properly, and that complete our installation of the etrailer axle technology, electric trailer brake assembly, self adjusting for the right side. For 5200 lb, 7000 axles part number AKEBRK-7R-SA.

Thank you so much for the inquiry! Yes, we are 100 satisfied with the service that you gave us then. Once installed and on the road to come from FL to OH, everything worked fine and we arrived home safely in spite of a bad snow storm we hit about 20 miles from home! The 5th Wheel and Trailer came boldly up OH Rt 7 very carefully and arrived home to a lot of snow, but safe and sound! We certainly would not ever hesitate to use your site again for parts. We had good advice and assistance from a couple who had worked for Ford Motor for years, and he even assisted the guys to install the new brakes. Kudos to you all!

To team e-trailer, So far,so good. The complete units were easy to install, although some of the brake assembly units were out of place and had to be reset from shipping and ruff handling. Here are some pictures of the 44 ft pace rig. We have already recommend you to many of our peers. We travel to about 20 events per year and in all kind of traffic conditions, we will let you know how they slow down the unit. Thanks Al and Matt Team Hotblade jet dragster 413418

Ordered 2L and 2R replacement brake sets along with but/washer/bolt replacements. Received 1L & 1R and all nut/washer/bolts-20. Enough to do all 4 replacement brakes. Called and found out that only 1 of each wash typed in. I did get free shipping and they did correct the order, again with free shipping. The first set had been bounced around because the shoes werebout of alignment. I had watched a youtube.com video to see how they went on, so i knew what to do to fix the problem. My ego did not allow me to call and complain. I figured that if you can replace the brakes, you should know how the should look and howbto make them fit. So etrailer.com I suggest that they need to improve the packaging. The next guy may not be able to figure out what to do.... Nor should he. I have the first set on and this weekend the second set will be fitted. Plan a head on the project. Do 1 at a time and photo how you remove so you can get them back on easier. This is a messy job. Use a paint tarp to keep grease off your driveway. Have several cans of brake cleaner - really cuts thenold grease. As long as you have the hubs off, re pack your bearings. I was not prepared. I will have to do a better repacking before rolling out next spring. Don't forget to get bearing seals because you WILL destroy the old ones getting them off. Happy camping! 290364

It was so easy and stress free to find the product I needed and get it ordered with confidence of being the right part. The shipping was fast and the part took very little effort to install. A friend told me about this web site, how easy it was to navigate. He said, find your part, order it, and it shows up on your doorstep in a few days. He was so right. Thank you for making it easy. 598682

Junk. Over tightens the brake. I had 3. One keep over heating or locking up the brake. One wore out the shoes in about two weeks and damaged the drum.. One had the return spring brake in the first week. Then the adjuster fell apart and rolled around the drum.. 590278

The brake assemblies and drum/Hubs were a perfect fit thanks to etrailer customer service taking the time on the phone to make sure I measured and ordered the correct parts. I made two mistakes during installation. Put a left brake assy on right side and had to take everything off again. Although they were packed tight, because of rough shipping one brake shoes self adjustment cable (the last one I installed) was disconnected and had to be re-connected, and since I did not inspect all the parts before beginning (second mistake) I had to look on etrailer's web site to see how it was assembled. It took time out of the job and grease on my laptop. If you don't make mistakes, it is EASY. Thanks etrailer. 499762

For grease seals you then would want the part # RG06-070. For bolts you'd need the part # 38N and for a washer part # 38LW.

These brakes have the self-adjusting feature on them so you don't have to manually adjust your trailer brakes every 3,000 miles. • Replacement Brake Assemblies for 5k Axles that Need New Brake Shoes
  • Picking out replacement brake shoes is somewhat difficult without knowing the brand and/or part number of the brake assemblies. Typically it just becomes easier to replace the assemblies as that is very easy to do. All you have to do is find the correct side and capacity assemblies and then you would be able to bolt them right on. Since your assemblies are 5k I can't recommend the part # AKBRKR-S-12. • Determining if Higher Rated Axle is Needed for Big Tex Landscape Trailer
  • As long as you don't exceed the 3,500 pound capacity of the axle on your Big Tex trailer with the higher sides (and additional cargo weight) you shouldn't need to upgrade anything. It is hard for me to say though whether or not its capacity will be exceeded without knowing how much the fully loaded trailer will weigh after raising the sides. The only way to know this for sure would be to simply have your loaded trailer weighed or to try and track how much weight you are adding to it...

You will need to splice in the wire that carries the brake controller signal from your vehicle to one of the wires on each assembly. The other wires for each assembly, as you mentioned, will need to be grounded to a clean, bare-metal surface on your trailer. Luckily for brake assemblies it doesn't matter which one...

  • Which is Best: Dexter, Tekonsha, or etrailer.com Brake Assemblies
  • The three brands of brake assemblies are made by different companies. None of them are made by each other. It might seem strange but if it were my trailer I would install Dexter assemblies. They have the best reputation because they are designed well and use high quality components. You really can't beat Dexter's axle components. • Comparing etrailer/AxleTek and Dexter Electric Brake Assemblies
  • The biggest difference between Dexter brake assembly # 23-459 and etrailer/AxleTek assembly # AKEBRK-7L-SA is the pad material. The Dexter assemblies use pads that are snapped off of a long strand of the material. The ones on the etrailer assemblies are cut. The benefit of cutting the pads to length is that they have clean edges and that means you won't see those fine line cracks in the material or pad corners breaking off so the pads last longer. The pads are also a little thicker...
