Self-Adjusting Brake Doesn't Require Routine Adjustment

Standard electric brake assemblies require manual adjustment of the brake shoes over time to provide longer-lasting and more efficient braking performance. With self-adjusting brakes, the brake shoes are always properly aligned, so there's no need to manually adjust the brakes after the initial adjustment. As a result, you get optimum performance without having to take the time to continually perform this type of maintenance.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

This brake assembly meets the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. This brake assembly underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. This brake has also been tested by QAI for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

Automotive-Grade Friction Material

Each shoe on this brake assembly is lined with automotive-grade friction material for improved stopping performance and longevity. The friction material is fully bonded onto the surface of the brake shoe. This lining is custom-molded for a perfect fit. The edges are tapered to ensure long-lasting performance. This taper, along with the circular grinding that the lining undergoes, helps to prevent cracking and crumbling. This durability helps to prevent mechanical lockup, which can occur when brake shoes are excessively worn or broken.

The friction material is also SAE-N certified, which means that it is an environmentally safe product that complies with California and Washington regulations regarding the composition of brake pads. As a result, this material not only provides high-performance braking that can endure the test of time, but it is also environmentally friendly and safe for use throughout the United States and Canada.

Video Transcript for etrailer Trailer Brakes AKEBRK-7R-SA Review

Today we're going to take a look at the 12 inch, right hand, self adjusting, electric brake assembly for a 7,000 pound axle. Now, this is an electric brake. Electric brakes are easier to install. They offer more user control than hydraulic brakes. Now, they do require only an electric brake control which we do sell separately on our website. There is no actuator or hydraulic lines necessary for electric brakes.

The nice thing on these, the brake shoes themselves are lined with an automotive grade friction material. This friction material is fully bonded to the shoe, it's not riveted to the shoe. Gives you longer life, more braking torte. The lining has tapered edges on each end here. They do a circular grinding of the material to prevent cracking and crumbling that can lead to mechanical lock up of the brakes. Now, this assembly itself is a self adjusting brake.

You can tell that by the steel cable here. It goes around the pulley and connects to this level that will control the adjustment wheel on the brake adjuster down here. Now, a self adjusting brake does not require period manual adjustment like standard brakes. On the star wheel itself, it's a fine tooth brake adjustment gear. That allows for a more precise setting and there's no brake in period needed following your initial adjustment. When you install these for the first time, you'll do your initial adjustment.

From there, it should be self adjusting as you go. Now, the backing plate on this, it has a nice e-coating to it, resists wear and corrosion. Also, one thing I want to show you on the back here. At the very bottom there's holes on brake assemblies that you can put an adjustment tool in there to adjust the brakes. These will come with adjuster plugs that plug those holes.

You don't really want to have those holes open because dirt could get in there and cause problems with the brake assembly. This one does come with the adjuster plugs already installed. It keeps the dirt from getting into the brake assembly. Now, the mounting bolts, nuts, and lock washers that are needed to install this onto your axle, they are sold separately on our website. Now, this assembly is certified for QAI which is Quality Assurance International, and CSA which is Canadian Standards Association. The size on this is a 12" x 2" passenger side electric trailer brake assembly. The way you can tell . The reason they say it's a 12" x 2", what you're doing is it's 12 inch is the diameter from here to here. The 2 inch is the width of the shoe. If we take a ruler, just to give you an idea, edge to edge, 12 inches. The width we'll be lining is right at 2 inches. Again, this is a passenger side, a right hand side, and no easy way to tell that. Now, it does have a sticker on it that tells you that. If that sticker wasn't there, the easiest way to tell is look at the lining that's on the shoe. If you'll notice, the lining over here is a lot longer than this one which is shorter. What you'll be able to tell is the shorter shoe will always point towards the front of the trailer. Then if you turn it, that would point to the front. This would be your passenger side or right hand side brake assembly. Again, this is for an axle rating of 7,000 pounds. They are self adjusting. I wanted to show you, on the back it does fit a five bolt brake mounting flange, if you see the five holes right here. You want to make sure your brake mounting flange on your axle would be the five bolt design. This does use 12 inch drums. These are electric brakes. They have the magnet here. To activate that magnet, there are two wires on the back of the assembly right here. These two wires are both black wires. One will be connected to the brake feed to supply power to the brake, the other to the ground. Now, either wire can be used for either function so it doesn't matter which one's which. That should do it for the review on the 12 inch, right hand, self adjusting, electric brake assembly for the 7,000 pound axle.

The brake assemblies and drum/Hubs were a perfect fit thanks to etrailer customer service taking the time on the phone to make sure I measured and ordered the correct parts. I made two mistakes during installation. Put a left brake assy on right side and had to take everything off again. Although they were packed tight, because of rough shipping one brake shoes self adjustment cable (the last one I installed) was disconnected and had to be re-connected, and since I did not inspect all the parts before beginning (second mistake) I had to look on etrailer's web site to see how it was assembled. It took time out of the job and grease on my laptop. If you don't make mistakes, it is EASY. Thanks etrailer. 499762

Junk. Over tightens the brake. I had 3. One keep over heating or locking up the brake. One wore out the shoes in about two weeks and damaged the drum.. One had the return spring brake in the first week. Then the adjuster fell apart and rolled around the drum.. 590278

Thank you so much for the inquiry! Yes, we are 100 satisfied with the service that you gave us then. Once installed and on the road to come from FL to OH, everything worked fine and we arrived home safely in spite of a bad snow storm we hit about 20 miles from home! The 5th Wheel and Trailer came boldly up OH Rt 7 very carefully and arrived home to a lot of snow, but safe and sound! We certainly would not ever hesitate to use your site again for parts. We had good advice and assistance from a couple who had worked for Ford Motor for years, and he even assisted the guys to install the new brakes. Kudos to you all!

Had two different style tired old units that I rewired only to have brittle old wires break in a different place each time I fixed it. Replaced all four new brakes and now have a trailer that stops, job made easy by getting the correct parts. 434477

Ordered 2L and 2R replacement brake sets along with but/washer/bolt replacements. Received 1L & 1R and all nut/washer/bolts-20. Enough to do all 4 replacement brakes. Called and found out that only 1 of each wash typed in. I did get free shipping and they did correct the order, again with free shipping. The first set had been bounced around because the shoes werebout of alignment. I had watched a youtube.com video to see how they went on, so i knew what to do to fix the problem. My ego did not allow me to call and complain. I figured that if you can replace the brakes, you should know how the should look and howbto make them fit. So etrailer.com I suggest that they need to improve the packaging. The next guy may not be able to figure out what to do.... Nor should he. I have the first set on and this weekend the second set will be fitted. Plan a head on the project. Do 1 at a time and photo how you remove so you can get them back on easier. This is a messy job. Use a paint tarp to keep grease off your driveway. Have several cans of brake cleaner - really cuts thenold grease. As long as you have the hubs off, re pack your bearings. I was not prepared. I will have to do a better repacking before rolling out next spring. Don't forget to get bearing seals because you WILL destroy the old ones getting them off. Happy camping! 290364

Ordered 2 of these to replace the broken/grease soaked brakes on the right side of my 2018 Alpine 5th wheel RV. Had to make some minor adjustments to these so all of the parts on them lined up correctly, after that they were a perfect fit. I don't believe you could ask for an easier brake repair. 695996

With whatever system you end up using, you will want to leave a minimum of 4-7/8 inches of clearance above the tires for the suspension travel. If you end up using these axles, I recommend the Trailer Hub/Drum Assembly - 5,200-lb to 7,000-lb E-Z Lube Axles - 12" - 8 on 6-1/2 - Galvanized,...

  • Are Trailer Brake Magnets Polarity Sensitive
Brake magnets such as the Replacement Magnet Kit # AKBRKR-M12 on trailer electric brake assemblies are non-polarized. When installing an electric brake assembly, like the Right Hand 12" # AKEBRK-7R-SA, either wire can be used for the brake signal and ground wire functions. For the Left Hand assembly you will use # AKEBRK-7L-SA.

  • Replacement Electric Drum Brakes and Drums for Sundowner Horse Trailer
We can help you select replacement electric drum brakes for your Sundowner horse trailer. You can usually find an axle's capacity on a sticker or plate on the axle itself. You'll naturally want to choose replacement drum brakes that match that capacity, as well as the diameter and width of the brakes currently on the trailer. Once you find the axle capacity you can then measure your brake drums for their size (please see the linked photo). I checked the Sundowner website but their specs...

  • Recommended Brake Assemblies For Gooseneck Trailer With Dual 7K Axles
With 7K axles on your trailer I recommend using brakes that are designed for your rig. Using 6K brakes on the trailer may not be sufficient. There are two differences between the 6k and the 7k brakes. The brake magnet regardless of the size magnet has more windings on the 7k which makes the magnet stronger. Also, the linings are constructed of different material between the 6k and 7k. The 7k material is more aggressive. Since price is a factor for you I recommend going with less-expensive...

  • Replacement Hub and Brake Assemblies for Lippert 7k Axle
The Dexter E-Z Lube Hub and Drum assembly that would work for your Lippert axles with the bearing and seal numbers you provided is part # 42866UC3-EZ. This fits 5200 lb to 7000 lb axles that require a 2-1/4 inch ID grease seal. The drum dimensions for this measure 12 inches diameter by 2 inches wide. I would recommend new drums like this unless yours happen to be in great condition still. We had a customer give us the bearing numbers of their Lippert 7k hub and they were # 14125A and...

  • Recommended Trailer Brake Assemblies for 5,200 to 7,000 Pound Tandem Axle Trailer
Yes, your 12 x 2 axles are going to be 5,200 to 7,000 pound axles. The brakes I recommend are # AKEBRK-7L-SA for the left and # AKEBRK-7R-SA for the right. These are self adjusting so they only need to be adjusted once at installation then left alone. I've included a couple of videos you be interested in as well.

  • Selecting Correct Replacement 12 x 2 Electric Brake and Drum Assembly for 6000-lb Axle
The best way to identify the correct replacement components for your trailer is by using the part numbers from your current inner and outer bearings and grease seals (or a spindle measurement where the seal and bearings ride). It is possible to measure the spindles to obtain grease seal dimensions (location B on the photo) but this process requires care and a precision digital caliper like # PTW80157. You will also need to confirm the diameter of your wheel studs. We already know your brakes...
