Question:

It seems the curt rack is the strongest of the hitch mount 5 bike carriers... and its more affordable than the thule... the question is, can it carry adult bikes on the tapered arms? Arent they too close together?

The Curt Premium 5 Bike Rack, part # C18065 can carry 5 bikes at one time, and to answer you question, yes they will be very close to each other. You can stagger the way the bikes are loaded so they are not banging into each other.

If you are planning on carrying bikes with alternative frames like kids bikes or women's bikes I recommend using an adapter bar like part # 64005. This attaches between the seat post and the handlebar stem and allows the bike to be carried more level in the carrier while providing additional ground clearance. I have attached a product review video for this adapter bar.
