Installing a 7-Way Trailer Connector on a 2001 Ford F-150

Question:

My truck is a 2001 Ford F150 Lariat supercrew with a Triton 5.4l and it came with a factory installed tow package. The wire harness I have is the regular short rectangular connection at the frame rail but has a round connection near the tail gate that connects into the tail lights I imagine. The harness has a flat 4 way and a 7 blade connection and I have not been able to find a new harness to fit my vehicle. The harness has been spliced and messed with by the previous owner and needs replaced bad. I was wondering if I got the 2001 Ford F-150 Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness for Factory Tow Package - 7-Way Trailer Connector part # C55242 if I could just plug the harness in at the frame rail connection and ultimately kill the old wire harness and still be able to use the new one or is there a harness made for my vehicle with the short rectangular plug and the round plug that I havent found? Any help is appreciated

Your 2001 Ford F-150 likely came with a factory 4-Way and someone spliced in a 7-Way at some point. To determine if the truck is set up already for a fully functional 7-Way you can check under the hood to see if the necessary relays and fuses are present. If they are then you could use Curt harness # C55242 and it will work.

If the fuses and relays are not present then they would also need to be added and I recommend harness # 118242 which includes them as well as the 7-Way. I have linked a video showing an example installation of this harness for you.
