Are Master Lock Hitch Lock for 2-1/2 inch Receivers Capable of Towing a 11,000 Pound Gross Trailer

Updated 07/16/2010 | Published 07/14/2010

Question:

I have a class V receiver and I am towing about 11,000 lbs. I am wondering what this locking pin is rated for weight wise and if this would be safe. Thanks.

The Stainless Steel Trailer Hitch Lock for 2-1/2 inch Receivers, item # 1469DAT, is rated at 10,000 pounds for Class III or IV hitches. You will need to check your hitch and make sure that it does not have washers welded to the sides of the hitch around the pin hole. If this is the case, the # 1469DAT lock will not fit.

Another 2-1/2 inch we have had excellent results with is our etrailer.com Lock Flush Design for 2-1/2 inch Trailer Hitches, item # e98881, customer reviews are excellent and the pin is designed to handle loads up to 15,000 pounds in 2-1/2 inch receivers. I have included a link to a video review of the lock for you.

Normally hitch pins are not rated for weight capacity because the weak link in the system is going to be a ball mount, ball, or other component before a hitch pin could fail.
