Which Runs Cooler a Bias Ply or a Radial Tire
Published 08/13/2015 >
Question:
A previous answer states that a radial runs cooler than a bias ply but flexes more. It is my understanding that more flex equals more heat. This seems to be a contradiction. Can you elaborate?

Flex can create heat, but due to the construction of bias ply tires (stiffer sidewalls and different ply angle), more heat is created with a bias-ply than a radial.
It's basically about friction. The tire is going to flex as it travels down the road. But a tire that is more difficult to flex (bias ply), will create more friction as it is forced to flex therefore it will create more heat.
