Replacing Factory 4-Way Trailer Wiring Harness on a 1999 Toyota 4Runner

Updated 05/13/2015 | Published 05/12/2015

Question:

I have a 1999 Toyota 4 runner which is set up with the 4 pin plug. I need to have a 7 pole connector with a connection blk wire to charge my RV battery. I have purchased from etrailer the Hopkins Adapter #378185 to connect with the factory wiring. After installing it with the factory set up I only have tail lights and no turn signals/brake lights. I have double checked all connections. After some research it appears this is a common issue in older 4 runners with the factory converters. Will this part replace the factory set up? And will I need to disconnect any of the old factory wiring and/or run another wire to the battery since I have already done that with the Hopkins adapter? Lastly, do you recommend the Tow Ready or the Curt wiring kit? I have also ordered a wiring kit for my 2010 Venza which I have not yet installed and one of your representatives stated the Tow ready was more dependable. Thank you

Yes, you can install Tow Ready trailer wiring harness # 118341. It will not install in the same place as your factory 4-Way on your 1999 Toyota 4Runner. But before installing a new harness, check the vehicle owners manual for the locations of the tow package fuses to see if any are blown/missing.

If you do need to go with a new harness then # 118341 is the one I would go with because the Tow Ready harnesses have proven to have less issues than other brands. You will not have to run any power wires or change anything with the 7-Way you have installed. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you to view.
