does the big spring go inside of the coupler?

It certainly does. I've provided a diagram for a different coupler repair kit that will show you exactly how the latch assembles and what goes where.
The threaded bolt from the handle inserts into the coupler. From underneath, slide on the spring, the jaw and the square plate, followed by the tension spring and the lock nut.
