Connecting Power Wire of # 118526 Taillight Converter to 12-volt Socket of 2015 Kia Sportage
Published 12/18/2014 >
Question:
If the vehicle 2015 KIA Sportage has a 12v accessory power outlet in the back why can it not be used to power the unit in lieu of running a wire all the way to the battery? The power outlet is rated for 10 amps and it is located in the same panel on the drivers side that needs to be opened in order to install the unit.

One of the primary purposes of drawing the power for the taillights directly from the battery is to isolate the wiring system of the vehicle from the trailer wiring. This way, the vehicle wiring will be protected from any short circuits that might occur in the trailer wiring. Installing the wiring harness in the manner you describe would also void your warranty coverage.
I can't recommend you install the Tow Ready # 118526 in any other way than what the manufacturer recommends. You can see installation instructions and an install video by clicking the provided links.
