Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

Note: Axle does not come fully assembled.

Pre-Greased Hubs

A trailer hub with the grease cap taken off shows greased bearings

The pre-greased hubs in this kit come with the bearings, races, and seals already installed, which makes for a faster install time and less mess to deal with. After you've put on the grease caps and lug nuts (included), you'll be ready to roll.

etrailer Axles

etrailer axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

This hub-and-drum assembly meets the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. This assembly underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. This assembly has also been tested by QAI Laboratories for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Recommended Tires for Pontoon Boat Trailer and Speeds Around 75 MPH
For your pontoon boat trailer, I recommend moving to a larger tire so that you can get the speed rating you need. I would only move up one size, so you don't go too far with adding height to your trailer. I recommend the Taskmaster 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Spoke Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C # TA76RR which are rated for up to 1,045 lbs at 80 psi and have a speed rating of 81 mph max. You will want to be aware of the overall dimensions of the tire so you can make...

It sounds like your assemblies are not the typical assemblies and will need to be replaced. For your brake assemblies, I recommend the Electric Trailer Brake Kit - Self-Adjusting # AKEBRK-7-SA along with mounting hardware # BRKH12. If you don't have the brake flange compatible, you can use the Brake Mounting Flange for 3" Round Axle # 4-44-1 which needs to be precisely welded in place. Then for your drum brake assemblies to match, I need some more information. I will need either the...

  • Availability of 3,500 lbs Axle with 89" Hub Face and 69-1/4" Spring Seat Dimensions
Hey Mike, thanks for reaching out! I don't think it's as much the allowable overhang as much as your trailer just being older and having a unique axle size. You can special order an axle from a trailer shop with the specs you need or you can use one of our Timbren Axle-Less Kits like part # A35RS545E which installs directly to the trailer frame and doesn't need a specific spring-center measurement. The other alternative is to use an axle like the Trailer Axle w/ Electric Brakes # e43SR...

For your pop up camper, I recommend the Trailer Axle w/ Electric Brakes - EZ-Lube - 5 on 4-1/2 Bolt Pattern - 89" - 3,500 lbs # e43SR. You will want to measure to ensure that this is the correct fit with the leaf springs at 74 inches from spring center to spring center. This axle has the brake assemblies and hub and drum assemblies already fitted, so you will just need to assemble and install. For leaf springs, you will want to measure from center of spring eye to center of spring...

  • Are There 3,500 lb Axles With 89 Inch Hub Face to Hub Face Measurement Without Spring Seats
Hi there Chad; there are actually not any 3,500 lb axles with an 89 inch hub face to hub face measurement that does not have spring seats welded on. The ones we offer do have the spring seats welded on at 74 inches apart. That said, if you need spring seats at a measurement different than the 74 inch spacing you can have new ones welded on with the Spring Seat # TRSS238. We don't have two axle kits with suspension but there are a couple options for 89 inch, 3,500 lb axles with hub and...

  • How to Measure to Calculate Placement of Torsion Axle
I understand how it would be unclear which measurement to use since the center of the axle is not the same as the center of the wheel on a torsion axle. For a single axle trailer, measure from the center of the spindle (center of wheel) to the trailer tongue. The position of the wheel center relative to the center of gravity will determine the final axle loading as well as the hitch load. This applies for both leaf spring axles, like # e43SR as well as torsion axles, like yours.

  • Replacement Trailer Axles that have 3,500 lb Capacity Recommendation
We have a couple options for a 3,500 lb axle that could work on your 1985 Terry Resort Travel Trailer, but they all have the same dimensions that hopefully would match up with what you have. You will need to measure your axles first though. The axles we offer are 89 inches from hub face to hub face and 74 inches from spring center to spring center. If your axles match these dimensions the part # T3584F-EZ-8974 would be a great choice for a hubless axle. If you wanted an axle that came...

  • 2016 Chevy Equinox Towing Weight Limit for Trailers Without Brakes
The online edition of the owner's manual for your 2016 Chevrolet Equinox does indicate on page 193 that the maximum trailer weight that can be towed is 1000-lbs if the trailer itself does not have brakes. The vehicle certainly can tow more weight than this, up to 3500-lbs for the V6 version towing a trailer WITH brakes, but the issue here is stopping power and control rather than the sheer muscle to pull the trailer. The vehicle itself has a curb weight of about 3700- to 4000-lbs and a...

Hey Shane, so the axles we offer like the part # e43SR are designed to be underslung. That means the spring perch is on top of the axle tube.
