Yakima FrontLoader universal mounting hardware

If you have a roof rack, a bike and a destination, then all you need to get there is the FrontLoader. This premium wheel mount holds just about any bike and fits round, square and most aero and factory crossbars with universal mounting hardware - no annoying adapters required.

Yakima FrontLoader cradling wheel arms

You can mount your bike on FrontLoader without removing the front wheel, cutting the loading time drastically compared with fork-mounted designs. The bike remains vertical as you roll it into place on FrontLoader's cradling wheel arms.

Yakima FrontLoader adjustable tire holderYakima FrontLoader cradling tire holders

The front tire is cradled firmly but gently by a pair of adjustable arms, or wheel hoops. The larger, outermost arm features a sliding wheel grip that is labeled with wheel sizes and that adjusts for the perfect fit over your tire. The innermost, smaller, ratcheting wheel hoop is then pulled up into position to grab the back half of the front tire.

Yakima FrontLoader tuning knob for tire cradles

The cradling wheel arms are fine-tuned for the perfect fit around your tire with an adjustment knob, and they are easily released with a push of the red button. Cradling your bike by the tires, the FrontLoader avoids contact with the frame, so your paint job remains pristine. The carrier accommodates wheel sizes from 20" to 29" and easily accepts bikes with disc brakes, thru axles or non-traditional suspensions.

Yakima FrontLoader wheel tray with ratcheting strap

The fully adjustable, sliding wheel tray holds most bike sizes, from monster freeride bikes to girls' bikes with tassels on the handlebars. Rear wheels are secured in place on the tray with a ratcheting wheel strap. Ratchets are on both sides of the strap for easy loading and unloading from either side of your vehicle.

Yakima FrontLoader integrated cable lock

An integrated security cable that is compatible with 1 Same Key System (SKS) lock core (sold separately) keeps your bike safe on the rack. The cable deploys from the inner arm and stores inside it when not in use. The cable can also lock the carrier to your crossbars when no bike is mounted.

Yakima FrontLoader folds flat for storage

The upright arms of the FrontLoader fold flat when not in use, cutting wind resistance and allowing for easy storage.

Yakima FrontLoader lock plug for additional SKS lock core

The carrier installs on your crossbars with clamps, and the tension of the front clamp is controlled by an integrated handle. The bike rack locks to your roof-rack crossbars with an additional SKS core (sold separately).

Video Transcript for Yakima FrontLoader Roof Bike Rack Review

Today, we'll be taking a look at the Yakima FrontLoader Roof-Mounted Bike Rack, part number Y02103. This Yakima bike rack allows us to carry one bike on the roof of our vehicle safely and securely. It has a unique mounting system, which grabs our front tire, holds it in place by tightening this knob here. The universal clamping system allows it to fit around your round, square, aero, elliptical, and most factory roof rack systems. As you can see, I've got it around the Yakima round bars here today and has a nice secure fit. For our frontloader here, we've got an adjustable top wheel cradle, and that's going to accommodate anywhere from 20 to 29-inch wheel sizes, including your kid's bikes and your road bikes.

Simply undo this lever here and we then we can adjust it up and down. We've got a lever on both sides. Our wheel tray provides excellent support for our wheel tire and it's cut out in the center, which is going to allow dirt and debris to not get built up in the center. Our rear wheel strap uses a unique ratcheting system, so that we can make sure that our rear wheel is nice and secure while we're driving down the road. It comes with an integrating locking cable attached to the rear of our frontloader here. Simply undo it, can bring it through our tire, and lock it in place.

There's also a place in the front here for a locking core, so we can lock our lever in place. Those are going to be sold separately. Now, that we've gone over some of the features, I'll go ahead and show you how to install it. You want to make sure that both of our clamps are opened ready to receive our load bars. Now, let's go ahead and set it on our crossbars. Now, it's important to have a crossbar spread between 16 and 48 inches for this to safely work out, so we've got 28 inches here today.

We can go ahead and begin by setting our front clamp around our crossbar. We'll come up here to our handle upfront and tighten that down and it's going to squeeze the clamp to our crossbar underneath. Once we get that tightened, we can move on to the back. I'm going to go ahead and move the tire hold out of the way. That way I can adjust the rear clamps, so I'm going to lift up on the bike rack and slide it forward and set that evenly on the rubber pad here.

Now, we'll grab our clamp from before and back here you'll notice these 3 notches. This is so it makes it universal to work around whatever load bar you might have. We're going to go with the top notch there. Just put it in like this. You may have to pick up on the bike rack a little bit. No big deal. Just put that in place, set it back down, and swing it underneath. Then, we'll take our gun screw with the T on the bottom and push that through the clamp and turn it so it locks into place underneath the clamp like that. Now, we can tighten that down. No reason to over-tighten. Make sure it's nice and secure so it doesn't slide on our crossbars and we got it. Now, we're almost ready to load up our bike. We'll make sure that our rear strap is undone, just push on this button here and pull it out. If you can, just tuck it away or move it out of the way. For our frontloader, we'll need to make sure that the bottom portion of the tire hold is laying flat on the bike rack, and then if we need to check our tire size, we can just simply undo our latches here and adjust it. We already had that set up. We'll just move that back in place and secure that. All right. Now, we'll grab out bike and we'll come up. We'll set the front tire in first, and you'll want to roll it forward so that the bottom portion of our frontloader raises up and then we can set the rear tire down, making sure that our strap goes between our spokes, just like that. Now, with our tire in place, the only thing left to do is tighten down our red knob, and it's going to draw our frontloader together holding our tire in place. Now, let's tighten down our rear strap, and we're ready to hit the road. This is our test course. Let's start with the slalom. This shows side-to-side action, such as turning turning corners or evasive maneuvering. Then, on to our alternating speed bumps, this shows twisting action, such as hitting curbs, pot holes, road debris, or uneven pavement. Last of all, the solid speed bumps, this shows up-and-down action such as driving through a parking lot or parking garage or driving in and out of a driveway. That's going to complete our look at the Yakima FrontLoader Roof-Mounted Bike Rack, part number Y02103. .

Great rack! Many improvement over the current yakima product. Easy to install, easy to mount bike, everything quick to turn by hand-no tools necessary. May have to get another one. 571203

Holds bike nice and firm, no wiggling around. And if you have a 27.5 all mountain bike and a 700c road bike it fits both with no adjustment. When bike rack is mounted on a SUV roof it is a little high getting the bike up there. I use a small 3 step ladder to get it up on the roof. 317017

Very good website. How-to videos are well done, short, sweet and to the point. Nice also to see a photo of the actual human beings who participated in the product video, research, etc. Excellent shipping and follow up. I asked a question about very precise technical detail about the bike rack I bought (two actually) and the help desk guy replied quickly with just what I needed. Nice. Actual people. I have learned from experience that if you want good service, have real, competent, people on the job. That big box website is OK, but this is better. :-) :-) :-) 564272

Very good product. It holds the bike securely on the roof without contacting the frame. It is easy to adjust from my road bike to my 29er mountain bike. Our drives are all relatively short, so I like that I do not need to remove the front wheel to lock in the bike. It's also nice that the SKS locking system allows me to use the same key for this rack that I use for my Yakima roof box and hitch rack. This is my first roof rack and I chose this route for a couple reasons. Some of the roads we travel to get to our trail heads are a bit rough and with a roof rack I don't have to worry about bottoming out a hitch rack hanging off the back of the vehicle. Also, it takes up less room in the garage. Our vehicle is a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee with an additional 4 inches of ground clearance. That makes it a bit of a reach for my 5'4" wife, so we take our two-step along to help her. This is my third time purchasing from etrailer, and each experience has been very good. They are a very customer service oriented company. I really appreciate all the additional information they provide on their products, especially all the videos they produce to aid in reviews, assembly, and use. 551078

First, the folks at ETrailer are on their game! The product videos are great and customer service emailed me when they saw my roof racks were delivered! That’s awesome!! I decided to go with the Yakima front loader wheel mount bike rack. I did not want to be bothered with removing the front tires every time I put my bikes on the roof. These were more than a snap to install. Do yourself a favor look up your vehicle and I can almost guarantee you there’s a video or five for it LOL. The material these are made out of feel good and strong like they will last a long time. Again they were super easy to set up the hardest part is actually getting the bikes up on the roof of my suburban as I am not that tall LOL. I highly recommend this if you’re going to be an occasional bike transporter. 676871

Ordering, shipping, and conversations with sales team were fast, convientnent, and reliable. I had asked the sales chat lady if I would need the lock housing for this particular rack and she said I would. Ultimately the housing won't work, but there are two spots for the sks lock cores so the two pack that I purchased also works great. If you purchase this rack don't buy the lock cores. The rack is very easy to use and keeps the bike quite secure without having to take the front wheel off. On a 16 hour drive I rechecked everything around four hour stops (gas) and it was still nice and snug at each contact point. Highly recommend. 673456

Great rack! Easy to install--it took me only a few minutes to install the rack onto the factory bars of my old Honda CR-V. The installation instructions were great and easy to follow. I also loaded my gravel grinder bike onto the rack with no problem, though it is significantly easier with a ladder or step stool. Took the bike on rack on a 8 hour roundtrip and it worked great, feels stable. So great that this rack fits on factory bars as well as Yakima's proprietary rook rack system. My only minor issues are that on factory bars are curved, so the bike rack leans a bit, but it didn't affect the stability. Also, given how important the locks are to keeping the bike secure, it seems silly that they are sold separately. Other than those two issues, the rack is terrific. I might even buy a second one. 399144

I ordered a Yakima FrontLoader Roof Mount Bike Carrier from etrailer, received it in 2 days, and had it installed and ready to go in about an hour. I had to move the factory crossbars on my 2002 Forester forward a bit so that the rack would not interfere with the car's liftgate, but other than that, had no difficulties at all. I used it today and it works very well -- the bike stayed rock solid on that rack at highway speeds. 270067

Received in 2 days. Perfect condition. Reasonably time to attach and learn how to use. Rear mount just slightly loose on factory Subaru Crosstrek Aero bars due to profile. I would recommend the product and etrailer! 226786

I had a terrible time attempting to find a bike rack system that would connect to my Nissan Frontier (with utili-track) that would enable me to keep my front wheel mounted (which was a must). etrailer was awesome. Melinda (my rep) made sure the rack system would work with my truck before I purchased it. The Yakima BedRock cargo rack fit perfectly, and the FrontLoader Bike Carrier holds the bike snugly. This is a perfect solution for anyone with a pickup. 214580

This rack is the shiznit!!! So easy to install and very stable once it's on your roof. My only initial struggle was to have he strength to carry my bike over my head, lift myself into the bottom of my door ledge with one leg, and then continue to lift and position my bike in the bike rack. If you don't have strong upper body strength, I would recommend the trunk rack as an alternative. I will say that I found a good alternate method to what I described above. First, place the side of the tires on your roof and hold your bike horizontally over your head. Then, while you're holding the bike, lift yourself on to your door ledge. This takes off a lot of the weight of the bike and makes it a heck of a lot easier to climb into my car. Then once you've positioned yourself, simply lift the bike and place it into the tire spacing a of the bike rack. Thanks, etrailer and thanks to Yakima for the delivery of a kickass product. 211219

Was surprised to find the item fully assembled when it arrived. Was very easy to install and holds my mountain bike very securely. It sometimes will grab the knobs on the tire so you have to fight a little to get it free, but I see this as a very small inconvenience. 209608

The product design is great and installs on my roof rack very easily. Well designed and well built. One of the 2 I ordered had a defect and etrailer.com had a new one shipped out immediately. Great donning business with them!!! 209574

The bike carrier is solid and easy to install...the only issue I have is that because of the way the cross bars are located on my Venza I loose the full use of the hatch...one solution is to mount the carrier backwads where the bike faces the rear and not forward...big deal...it may put a smile on the face of other drivers 188933

Yakima Front Loader bike carrier is exactly what I wanted for my trailer application for carrying my dual sport bicycle . It is very sturdy and fits perfectly. I have long trips planned in the coming months, but test runs show me this carrier will do the job. Hated to have to buy locks which were not included.... 154144

The best option we have available to transport your mentioned cargo is the Yakima EasyRider Double Decker Trailer # Y08129. Although there are no trailer hitch fits for your Passat with the Tech...

  • Solution for Transporting Bikes with 2018 Hyundai Ioniq Electric
Since you have the electric version of the 2018 Hyundai Ioniq the only solution we have for carrying bikes will be with a roof rack since none of our hitches are a fit and we also do not have any trunk racks. So for a roof rack we have the Yakima CoreBar Rack part numbers # Y00421, # Y00146, # Y06175, and # Y06111 which is a confirmed fit and would work great. These bars are aero shaped so you'll have minimal wind noise and this rack is very easy to install as well. Then for bike...

  • Roof Mounted Cargo Basket and Bike Rack for 2018 Honda Fit
There is an option for you to have a cargo basket with a bike rack on your 2018 Honda Fit, though there is nowhere to attach a bike rack on the Thule Canyon XT # TH859XT. Instead, I recommend the Yakima LoadWarrior Roof Rack Cargo Basket # Y07070 along with the Yakima FrontLoader Wheel Mount Bike Carrier # Y02103 and you would be set. The FrontLoader will clamp onto the LoadWarrior cargo basket making it simple to attach whenever you want to take your bike with you and even folds flat...

  • Recommended Crossbars Compatible with Pop-up Camper and Roof Mounted Bike Carriers
For your 2013 Forest River Rockwood Premier 2516g, I recommend the Swagman Roamer LT Roof Rack for Pop-Up Campers and Camper Shells - Steel - 7' Long - 150 lbs # S80510. This system will work with the roof of your camper and will also allow the clearance needed for your Yakima Front Loader bike racks # Y02103 which will work well with the square crossbars.

  • Recommendation for Carrying 4 Bikes on 2016 Toyota Prius V
For your 2016 Toyota Prius V, I recommend the Draw-Tite Sportsframe Trailer Hitch Receiver, Class I # 24847. This hitch is confirmed to fit all models of the 2016 Prius V and will not require any drilling or welding for installation. The installation instructions and an installation video on a similar Prius are attached for you. Since this trailer hitch is a Class I rated hitch, it is limited to carrying 2 bikes on a hitch mounted carrier. This is because a Class I hitch is not designed...

  • Replacement Wheel Strap for the Yakima FrontLoader
To replace the wheel strap on the Yakima FrontLoader, part # Y02103, you'll need part # 8880191 which will replace your broken strap. If you need the longer variation, its part # Y8880229.

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack for 2014 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen
For your 2014 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen SE, I recommend the Curt Class I Trailer Hitch Receiver # C11474. When compared to the other trailer hitches confirmed to fit your vehicle, the Curt has the best ground clearance measurement of about 10-1/2 inches from the ground to the top of the hitch receiver. I have attached an installation video on your vehicle for you to check out. Keep in mind that Curt requires you to use stabilizing straps like # 18050 for non-trailer loads such as bike...

  • Can Yakima HangOver 6 Bike Rack Be Used for Kids Bikes
I reached out to my contact at Yakima and she did say that the HangOver 6 Bike Rack # Y02485 is not going to be a good option to secure kids bikes. Since the carrier is a wheel-mount style and the cradles cannot be individually adjusted, all 6 bikes really need to be pretty similar in size. As you mentioned, the rack also isn't compatible with bikes that don't have the needed suspension forks for the cradle strap to attach to. This is the only 6 bike rack we have available but we do...

  • Roof Rack Recommendation for a 2011 Kia Optima with Sunroof and a Yakima FrontLoader Bike Rack
Does your 2011 Kia Optima already have a roof rack? If it does then the center to center distance from one crossbar to the other will need to be 16 to 48 inches and the Yakima FrontLoader # Y02103 will fit. If you do not have a roof rack then you will first need to add one. Rola roof rack # 59896 is a great economical option that will fit your Optima and the bike rack. Please note that with this or any bike rack it is not recommended to open the sunroof because the sunroof could potentially...

  • Roof Rack and Rooftop Tent for 2017 Toyota Tacoma
We do not carry the Diamondback covers so I am unfamiliar with how they work or if accessories can be drilled into them so I recommend contacting the manufacturer to ensure it is safe to do what you are seeking to do. If so, the only option we have for crossbars is the Rhino Rack # Y04-260; you will need to drill into your cover to get these to work. There is a rooftop tent compatible with these bars, the Yakima SkyRise HD # Y07436, which is a two-person tent that will install on your...

  • Best Yakima Wheel Mount Rooftop Bike Carrier For Factory Crossbars
Yes, we have two Yakima wheel mounted roof rack bike carriers that are compatible with most factory crossbars. For this, you will want the Yakima HighRoad Roof Bike Rack part # Y02114 or the Yakima FrontLoader Wheel Mount Bike Carrier part # Y02103. The Yakima FrontLoader is the more cost effective option of the two however both of which are very similar. The HighRoad carrier is actually the newer updated version of the two and the only noticeable difference between them is the Highroad...

All of the Yakima SKS locks are the same size and shape they just take different keys. For a set of 2 keys, 2 locks, and the control key to be able to install the locks use # Y07202. They will fit the lock spaces on your rack and both locks take the same key.

  • Roof Rack Needed to Carry Roof Box, Bike Rack, and Kayak on a 2006 Honda Pilot
Out of the Yakima and Thule options for the naked roof on your 2006 Honda CR-V I recommend going with Yakima. The Thule options have bars that end inside the foot packs. This gives the roof rack a great OEM look but minimizes the amount of crossbar space that can be used. To use a JetStream aero bar roof rack on your CR-V you will need the JetStream bars, part # Y00425 for Black or part # Y00428 for Silver, along with the SkyLine Towers # Y00148, and the Landing Pad 8 # Y00228.
