These bars work well with a tonneau cover and are easy to remove when you need a clear bed.
Pull the small release lever to free the gear, then swing the main lever over to let the bar slide back. Keep a hand on the bar so it doesn't spring loose. If it's hard to release, back off the tension slightly first so the teeth disengage smoothly.
Make sure the pawl is fully engaging the teeth and that you're not over- or under-tightening before locking. Inspect the teeth and ratchet for wear or debris, and check the end swivels or fasteners for looseness or damage. Verify the feet sit square on the bed walls so the bar isn't cocked or slipping.
