Pro Tip: Before you invest in a weight distribution hitch, make sure your cargo is evenly loaded in your trailer to keep the weight balanced. If you still have a hard time even after balancing your tongue weight, a weight distribution hitch should help.

Included Trailer Sway Bar

The included friction-style sway control reduces trailer sway caused by winds, passing traffic, curving roads, or sudden maneuvers. As soon as your trailer begins to move out of line, the friction pads inside the unit will slide against one another and create resistance to help prevent further side-to-side movement.

The Curt round bar weight distribution system is installed with the included friction sway control arm

Having a trailer sway bar allows you to easily dial in the amount of tension with the turn of a handle. If it's too loose, the friction pads won't have enough contact against the telescoping arm to control sway effectively. On the other hand, if you crank the handle clockwise, making the friction pads work harder than they need to, your ride will be a bit too rigid.

While its adjustability is nice (even if it takes you a few trips to get it just right), this sway bar doesn't play well with surge-type actuators, and it will have to be removed when backing up and any time you tow on wet or slippery roads.

By the way, if your trailer is really tall, long, or heavy, or if you tow through a lot of windy areas and sway is still an issue - even after you've tightened the unit to the max - you can always add another sway bar onto the other side of this hitch. The hitch head is built with mounting holes on both sides, so you can run 2 sway controls at the same time to really hold your trailer in line.

Adjusting the Head Tilt

A close-up image of the Curt MV hitch head shows the rivet and washers during installation

  • Adding washers adds tension, but it's not a case of "the more the merrier"
  • Stacking washers can be a pain, but you only need to do it once, or if your tongue weight changes

When you install this system, you'll have to adjust the tilt of the head to ensure proper leverage. To do this, simply slide washers onto the spacer rivet and insert it into the head assembly. Once the spacer is in place, tighten the shank bolts to secure the head to the shank. To check if your truck and trailer are level, you'll need to hook up and release your tongue jack. If you find that the rear of your truck is still sagging, add washers to increase leverage. If it looks like too much weight has been taken off your truck's rear axle and is sitting on your front axle, try removing a few washers.

While the washer-stacking method allows you to fine-tune the setup at the time of installation, it's going to require some patience. It can be time consuming because, if you don't get everything right the first time (which, you probably won't), you'll have to take the head unit apart to adjust the washers. You might have to adjust a few chain links to get the tension in the bars just right too. Not to mention that you might have to repeat this process if your tongue weight changes or if you swap out your tow vehicle.

Why Use a Weight Distribution Hitch?

Diagram showing weight distribution on a truck and towing a camper

  • Prevents uneven tire wear on your vehicle and trailer
  • Keeps the rear of your tow vehicle from sagging
  • Lets you tow to the max capacity of your trailer hitch
  • Stops your headlights from pointing up at the sky
  • Gives you control over steering your rig

Selecting the Right Weight Distribution System

  • Think "Goldilocks"
    • If you go for overbuilt, you'll have a rigid ride
    • If it's not strong enough, it's virtually useless
  • Let your tongue weight be your guide

Your tongue weight is the first thing you need to know when figuring out which weight distribution system you need. Most people think that if they get the highest-rated system possible, it'll be smooth sailing. But actually, this will create a rigid ride and a bouncing trailer. On the other hand, if the system isn't strong enough, it won't be able to distribute the weight properly, making it virtually useless.

Once you know your trailer's tongue weight, add it to the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Then just choose a weight distribution system rated for that combined tongue weight.

Don’t know what I was thinking not having one of these.
My 1971 Avion pulls so easily with this I sometimes forget its back there.
It’s a must have.
The weight is balanced between the tow vehicle and the trailer and the anti sway bar is a much needed added bonus.
If you don’t have a weight distribution and anti sway bar you are asking for trouble.
These are trouble preventers.

Very impressed with my e-trailer purchase. Quick delivery, free shipping, chains, hitch balls attached, all parts accounted for and the best price. Attached my curt weight distribution hitch with sway bar on trailer and got a very smooth, safer ride.

by:

We purchased the hitch to haul our 30' travel trailer using our F150. I called and asked questions prior to purchase and the rep. was extremely friendly and knowledgeable and assisted in our purchase. Very happy with the hitch and the assistance I received and would definately purchase from etrailer.com again. Thanks

by:

It's heavy, I like it a lot, you can get a cheaper one, but it'll be 10000lbs, I like having a 14000lbs

by:

Load leveling hitch and ball was as advertised, at the lowest price I could find anywhere (online or locally). Super durable heavy weight construction that made pulling large trailers a breeze without swaying, and level with vehicle even while using a standard 1500 Suburban with eBrakes.
Delivery was quick and painless.... I couldn't ask for anything more from an online purchase than what I got from etrailer.com
I would definitely purchase from them again for any product I need.

Hitch works like it's supposed to, pulls our 12,000lb tag like a boss.

by:

I purchased this hitch before a very long road trip from Fl. up into Wy. I was mainly interested in the ability to adjust the height of the ball, and the sway control I was pulling a 29' travel trailer with a F-250 truck. I did try the load leveler bars but the truck only sagged a 1/2", so I didn't bother. If you have never used this type of leveler before they have a tendency on a bumpy road to make the ride worse and you can beat your trailer to death if the road is really bad. Now granted I did overdue it on the hitch, I could have gotten by with a 10k hitch, but my rig was just over 10k loaded, it would ride softer with the smaller leveler bars, the bars are FAT with this hitch. All in all the height adjustment worked great, and even though they recommend 2 sway control bars for trailers over 27' it worked great also. I was running 65-70 mph with a 20+ mph wind hitting us sideways and the sway bar worked great. I probably will order another sway bar and install it on the other side, they are designed to accept 2. The specs claim that you can't back up with the sway bar locked, well I was able too. I have had other construction trailers that you could not, in fact you can bend the frame if your not careful. I used the extremely easy to follow instruction and did as they said, which is to have a spotter watch the trailer as you SLOWLY BACK THE TRAILER INTO JACK KNIFE POSITION. All went well; so I just left it tightened up most of the time. This is a well built easy to use system and I would definitely recommend this to anyone in need of a height adjustable, sway control and load leveler ability hitch. I towed over 6k miles in 4 weeks and have no complaints.

I am very pleased with the weight distribution hitch. The paint still looks good. The product performs just as described. I can haul six horses plus tack, hay and feed with no issues. I drive a ford lariat F150.

I am still very pleased with the hitch. The clips that hold the brace bars up are not a very good design. I have rigged them up a couple times so I can use the load leveler.

Bought this about 2 years ago for a trailer that doesn't get used all too often, but is used very intensely when it does. I bought it because this is a very heavy trailer, and stands 10.5 feet tall. I made one 500 mile trip without it, and got pulled around by by anything that would pass me. I constantly had my hand on the brake controller to be ready to stop a sway situation. Seriously, that was stressful! Once I got to the destination, I immediately purchased this for the return trip. Thousands of miles later, I only regret not getting this right away! This unit has made ALL THE DIFFERENCE! It took a situation that was miserable and made it more than manageable! If your trailer is really tall, I would recommend getting the additional sway control bar, because I did not do so, and I think mine has incurred accelerated wear managing this wind sail behind my truck, but it IS doing a great job regardless!
Setup for a rig like this is pretty involved, in that it adds a lot more steps to the hitching process, but none of them are all that challenging. If you have not used a rig like this before, don't let putting tension on the spring bars spook you. It is a good system, you can trust how it operates, just keep you hands clear and you will be just fine. I put a jack under the truck hitch and take lots of tension off the rear springs of the truck, then install the spring bars.
Factoring in the extra steps to setup, lubrication and care, and extra expense of buying this unit, I don't tow that trailer without this anymore. In my mind it is not even an option. I had a friend of mine tell me one time that, he was pretty much to the point where he wouldn't tow anything over 4k lbs. bumper pull, without sway control at the very least... I am in his camp now. This has completely changed towing my trailer. I went from dreading every mile and passing car (those semi trucks though! yikes!) to enjoying the drive again! I said is wrong earlier, this was not an extra expense. This is necessary, so appreciated!
Thank you etrailer, you guys have been outstanding over the years!

There were a few shipping problems. The shipping Containers don't seem to be sufficient. The problem might be the shipping Company. Etrailer Solved all the problems and the equipment works great. Suggestion for the etrailer, contract for spare parts and you willsave a lot of money on shipping.

by:

Like the hitch, but didn't vome eith any of the self threading 3/8" bolts. Had to buy them because I needed it mountdd quickly. Made towing my rig easy.

by:

Exactly what I needed at a good price. Great quality and great shipping time

by:

Awesome kit

by:

Couldn’t be happier with this product. Works as advertised. I was told by some people that I would get what I paid for, meaning I needed to spend $500 to $600 to get quality, not in this case. I tow a 30 foot camper with a Dodge Ram 1500 with no issues at all. I wish I had a picture of the truck without the weight distributor hooked up....it’s not good!!!

by:

This definitely will help level out your load. I purposely bought one that is heavier than our travel trailer, but I am glad I did, because I am able to nearly level my pull vehicle and travel trailer straight. Together with the friction sway control, I can drive from 55mph to 65mph depending on the wind and load from addition cargo. Before 50mph was about all I could go. Instructions were good. Assembly was straight forward. I would buy again.

by:

It works very good, I am very pleased with service and product!

by:

This hitch is awesome. I use it for several different trailers that I use for heavy haul. It does exactly what it is supposed to do and keeps truck and load level. I have not experienced any sway or dangerous moments since I bought this.

Still use it daily. Still working beautifully. The only issue I have had was with the distribution bar coming out of the hitch one time. I may not have locked it in properly. I dont think it was a product issue because it only happened one time. Just be sure to double check that the bar is pushed up all the way and the lock tab is seated properly and all will be well.

by:

I installed it myself on a 2020 wildwood fsx 179dbk. Not the heaviest trailer. The install was easy. When it arrived, the box was torn open and parts were missing. Etrailer made this right by sending me the missing parts, hassle-free. I have had this for a year now. I've pulled with it around 3 or 4 times now. I have no complaints.

It works GREAT! I have moved it back and forth between all my heavy trailers and it makes my trips safer and more stress free.

by:

Overall this is a good weight distribution hitch. I had a previous hitch but I needed a higher rating so I got this one. I stuck with the curt brand because I liked my old one so much. I have towed my campers from Ohio all the way to Texas, Florida, Colorado, and Maine. I will have to say I will stay with the Curt brand but there are a few things they could fix.

PROS: easy assembly
Torsion bars are easy to put in
Very sturdy
Sway control works like a charm(no creaking eitber)

CONS: Hard to pull on the release for the torsion bar
Very small notch where the chains sit and they keep slipping when i try to pull the chains up for tension

by:

Works great, made my trailer very stable with no sway

by:

Very good hitch, complete kit higher weight capacity that my other hitches. It was all put together and easy to put on, shipping was fast. My only concern was that UPS was a day late, the Hitch head was not boxed up,(very odd) and UPS layed the unprotected hitch head in the gravel and scratched one bottom edge, instead of setting it in the box, and again why was the head itself not boxed up and protected??? Also the box must have got wet, the Bars and chains were hanging out of the bottom of both ends of the box. I was afraid it would be damaged or missing parts. The bar that was hanging out did get scratched! NIce hitch set up though and a good price for everything, very Heavy Duty!

The hitch is working out, the bars were useless as the were bent to far down, too close to the ground, I had to use my old ones, also the chains were too short. They need to re design the bars!

@KateF Hi Kate The bars I used from my old hitch, the bars were straight and not curved, I dont recall the brand, and the chains were to short also. The bars it came with would have had to have longer chains and would have drug the pavement in and dips, driveways etc.

Amazing fast ship time! Box was a bit beat up on delivery but somewhat expected with suck a heavy item. Installed on trailer last night and worked perfectly!

Although the product seems to work fine and hasn't had issues, the shipping event was less than pleasing. I think I got all the needed parts that were supposed to be there, and even have a few things I have no clue I'd they are part of the kit.....just a mess

  • Can I Back Up My Forest River Camper With Andersen Weight Distribution Hitch Attached?
Good afternoon Drake! Yes you are in luck, because the Andersen Weight Distribution Hitches, like a lot of modern ones, do allow you to reverse while hooked up to your trailer. The reason this can, and some can't, comes down to if it uses certain types of friction bars. This uses chains and a friction ball head design, so you are all good, whereas something like the Curt Round Bar WDH # C17063 doesn't allow backing up due to the friction bars. For a really nice Andersen setup, I'd go with...

If your trailer is 5,000lbs fully loaded, the # C17062 would be the better option but with much more weight added the...

  • Can Hitch Ball be Changed on Curt MV Weight Distribution Hitch # C17063
Yes, you can change out the hitch ball on the Curt MV Weight Distribution System w/ Friction Sway Control - Round Bar - 14K GTW, 1.4K TW # C17063. If you need a 2" ball, for example, you can use the 2" Hitch Ball # A-90. Just keep in mind different sized hitch balls have different capacities, and the # A-90, for example, has a 10k capacity. To switch out the hitch ball you will also need a a 3/4" drive socket wrench and the 1-7/8" 12pt Thin Walled Socket # ALL643216.

  • Recommended Weight Distribution Hitch for No Boundaries 19.6 Travel Trailer
The most important factor when it comes to choosing a weight distribution hitch is going to be your tongue weight. Ideally you want your tongue weight to fall somewhere in the middle of your WDH range. Tongue weight is going to be 10-15% of your trailer weight depending on how you load it. Keep in mind, it also includes the weight of anything behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Assuming you are at the maximum weight, that puts you at 750-1,125 lbs for your tongue weight. The # C17063...

  • Differences Between Curt Weight Distribution C17063 and C17422
The biggest differences between the Curt Weight Distribution systems part # C17422 and # C17063 is the tongue weight ratings and the bar design. The # C17422 is a trunnion bar system rated for tongue weights up to 1,500 lbs and the part # C17063 is a round bar setup rated for tongue weights up to 1,400 lbs. Trunnion bars preferred typically as they usually provide better ground clearance and higher capacities. The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution Hitch for 10,000-lbs GVWR Dump Trailer
I recommend using the Curt MV Weight Distribution System w/ Friction Sway Control - Round Bar - 14K GTW, 1.4K TW # C17063, which will work well for your 10000-lbs GVWR trailer; you will want to make sure that your trailer does not exceed the 1400-lbs tongue weight capacity of this system. In order to use this system on your trailer frame you'll need to install the Chain Hangers for Curt Weight Distribution Systems - Bolt On # C17005, which will allow you to work around the hydraulic box...

A Gen-Y Torsion ball mount like # 325-GH-1024 can be used with a Curt MV weight distribution system. You will put the weight distribution system shank in one of the stacked receivers and that will give you a smooth ride and still give you the stability. The Curt MV Weight Distribution System # C17052, # C17063, and # C17422 are the options we have for the specific tongue weight. You want your trailer tongue weight to be within the middle of the range for the appropriate system.

  • Comparing the Curt MV # C17057 and # C17063 WD Systems
The Curt MV # C17057 system and the Curt MV # C17063 system that you referenced are actually the same WD system. The only difference is that the part # C17063 comes with a 2-5/16" hitch ball and a friction sway control whereas the part # C17057 doesn't come with either option. I recommend going with part # C17063 because you will need a hitch ball anyways and the sway control will help to reduce sway that you would experience from wind and passing vehicles. Please note that the sway control...

  • Weight Distribution for a 2015 Toyota Tundra and 6,300 Pound Dry Weight Travel Trailer
To choose a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. We know that the minimum tongue weight will be 720 pounds. We also know that the truck maxes out at 9,800 pounds gross trailer weight. So the feasible range of the tongue weight is 720 to 980 pounds (assuming...
