Pro Tip: Before you invest in a weight distribution hitch, make sure your cargo is evenly loaded in your trailer to keep the weight balanced. If you still have a hard time even after balancing your tongue weight, a weight distribution hitch should help.

Easy to Upgrade to Active Sway Control

Easily upgrade this weight distribution hitch with the Reese Strait-Line dual-cam sway control

  • This system doesn't control sway out of the box - but you can remedy that later on
  • The bars are specifically made to work with Reese's premium Strait-Line sway control system
    • Just add on the dual cams and get better control when cornering, swerving, and dealing with wind
    • Great sway control, but can get pretty noisy when you make turns
  • For a more economical option, you can add a bar-style friction sway control to either side of your trailer (or both sides, if you have a really long trailer)
    • Uses friction to force your trailer back in line when it gets pushed off course
    • Has to be removed at times (e.g. in the rain or when you're backing up), but its adjustable tension is a plus

Note: Neither of these sway control systems will work with surge-type actuators.

People often conflate sway control with weight distribution. It's understandable because most weight distribution systems on the market today do solve issues with sway.

This system will give you weight distribution only. It doesn't have any sway control built in. But if you find that you need sway control later, it's super-easy to upgrade to Reese's Strait-Line sway control system by adding on the dual-cam brackets (RP26002 - sold separately).

Get the Full Setup: If sway control is something you need right now to keep your trailer from getting squirrelly, take a look at RP66074 for a complete Strait-Line system.

A view of a Reese Strait-Line weight distribution system shows the flexing of the bars under weight.

Alternatively, you can add a friction sway bar (sold separately) for a little more reinforcement. This option allows you to easily dial in the amount of tension with the turn of a handle. This adjustability is nice (even if it takes you a few trips to get it just right), but it doesn't play well with surge-type actuators (neither does the Strait-Line dual cam system), and it will have to be removed when backing up any time you tow on wet or slippery roads.

Simple Setup with Serrated Washers

A top-down view of the Reese weight distribution hitch shows the design of the head and serrated washer feature

  • No more piling on washers
  • Exterior, serrated washers let you adjust the head without having to take everything apart

The easy-to-use, serrated washers on this system make adjusting the tilt of the weight distribution head a snap. This is a huge improvement over the standard pin-and-washer method, which involves piling washers onto a difficult-to-access pin. The serrated-washer system lets you easily loosen, adjust, and tighten a single washer and nut on either side of the head for simple, secure positioning.

Why Use a Weight Distribution Hitch?

Diagram showing weight distribution on a truck and towing a camper

  • Prevents uneven tire wear on your vehicle and trailer
  • Keeps the rear of your tow vehicle from sagging
  • Lets you tow to the max capacity of your trailer hitch
  • Stops your headlights from pointing up at the sky
  • Gives you control over steering your rig

Selecting the Right Weight Distribution System

  • Think "Goldilocks"
    • If you go for overbuilt, you'll have a rigid ride
    • If it's not strong enough, it's virtually useless
  • Let your tongue weight be your guide

Your tongue weight is the first thing you need to know when figuring out which weight distribution system you need. Most people think that if they get the highest-rated system possible, it'll be smooth sailing. But actually, this will create a rigid ride and a bouncing trailer. On the other hand, if the system isn't strong enough, it won't be able to distribute the weight properly, making it virtually useless.

Once you know your trailer's tongue weight, add it to the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Then just choose a weight distribution system rated for that combined tongue weight.

Very strong. Allowed me to pull an 11,000lb trailer.

by:

Huge difference over the old undersized hitch

Great product arrives like it said it would. Fast delivery.

Install is easy but you will need a high torque drill. I took it to the shop and they had it on in 20 minutes. I am very pleased with the improvement in safety and stability and with the ease of use and removal. It is exactly what my Avalanche needed to haul heavy loads! If only I could bolt on a 6.0L ...

by:

Had these installed by a dealer and drove a few hours to a campsite this spring. Only the second time driving a camper and first time on a major highway. White knuckle ride for the first half hour then realized the camper wasn't swaying or rocking and started to relax. Coming home two days later I started out relaxed and enjoyed the drive....even passed a truck!

by:

Works great. Using on a 14000 lb. tag along trailer behind a dually pickup. Takes up the slop in the hitch so the ride is better.

by:

Customer service was outstanding during the ordering process, hitch arrived as website indicated. Best price anywhere I could find. Thanks etrailer!

by:

Reese equipment quality is top notch. The adjustment mechanism at the head is what convinced me to pick Reese over other manufacturers. Customer service from etrailer is exceptional and will keep me coming back in the future.

by:

It was just like it was described. Came in perfect condition, fast delivery, no problems. I'll order again from etrailer.com.... They have what you need and want, beats shopping around all over town and the internet...

Installed it today on my cargo trailer and 2022 Ford Explorer and took it for test drive to the local truck scale. Products and instructions were great. Pam was wonderful helping me pick out exactly what I needed (and not try to sell me things I didn’t need).

  • When Flat Towing a Vehicle How Much Tongue Weight is on the Trailer Hitch
There are 2 different capacities independent of each other though related. Tongue weight is the downward force or weight on the trailer hitch. So it is pushing down at the back of the vehicle. The gross trailer weight is the weight of whatever it is you are towing. So for your motor home, at most you can tow 4,500 pounds gross trailer weight. Tongue weight is typically 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight. However, when flat towing a car there is almost no tongue weight because...

  • Can Weight Distribution System Tow Trailer without Spring Bars Connected
You can tow a trailer with a weight distribution setup that does not have the spring bars connected. As long as the head of the system is attached to the shank properly (there's no reason it wouldn't be) it would work just as well as a standard adjustable ball mount.

  • Weight Distribution Shank for Needing 15 inches of Drop
Thanks for the pictures of both your coupler height and hitch height. Based on that you'd need a shank that would provide 14-15 inches of drop. The shank we offer that would get you closest to that would be the Curt part # C17125 which can do a drop of up to 15-3/4 inches for a trunnion setup or 16-1/4 inches for a round bar setup.

  • Weight Distribution Recommendation for 2020 Ford F-250 Towing Travel Trailer Jayco 31BHDS
You're in a situation where weight distribution won't be absolutely necessary but you would have a better overall towing experience with a system installed. They say (the "all knowing they") that any time your trailer weighs more than half the weight of the tow vehicle weight distribution is recommended. Even on a vehicle built for towing like your 2020 Ford F-250. If you were planning on towing quite a bit with that RV I think you'll be much happier with a WD system. You'll have reduced...

To determine if your specific model 2014 Volkswagen Gold turbo diesel can be flat towed you will need to consult the owners manual. If it can there are at least 5 items that you will need. First you will need base plates for the Golf. Roadmaster base plates # 521235-1 will fit 2.0 liter TDI models. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you. Next you will need a compatible tow bar. I recommend the Falcon 2, # RM-520. This is the most popular compatible tow bar and...

  • How to Determine Correct Weight Distribution System Spring Bars Are Needed
Weight distribution hitches are classified by the range of trailer tongue weights their spring bars are rated for. If your current weight distribution hitch like the # RP66022 you'd looked at is rated for up to 12000 lbs, then the bars would be rated at 10% of that, which would be 1200 lbs. If the 6000 lb weight you mentioned represents the weight of the fully loaded trailer, then the tongue weight of the trailer should be somewhere in the 600-900 lbs range. To determine if the system...

  • Does Truck Payload Count as Tongue Weight on Trailer Hitch
This is a really good question, but the short answer is you are fine and not above the capacity. So payload is not the same as tongue weight capacity so you don't have to take one and add it to the other, and also with weight distribution you have to factor the weight behind the rear axle of the truck as tongue weight when picking out a system, but that extra weight does not really factor against the tongue weight capacity of the hitch. That said a weight distribution is a great option...

  • How to Identify Weight Rating of Weight Distribution Springs Bars
Unless there is obvious damage to your weight distribution spring bars - rust, chipped-off material, or a clearly inappropriate bend - they should still be functional. On a trunnion style bar like Reese # RP22225 there is a bend at the trailer end of the bar which engages with the dual cam sway control. On a round bar system there are bends at both ends. The thing is you need to know the tongue weight they are rated for. Spring bars can look very much the same but be rated differently....

  • How To Keep Trunnion Bars From Coming Out Of Hitch Head On The Reese Weight Distribution, # 66022
The trunnion bars on your Reese Weight Distribution System, # RP66022, should not fall out of the head assembly when driving down the road or during normal turns. When backing the trailer or turning very sharply the bar could come loose especially if the spring bars are not very tight. You should check the weight distribution head and trunnion head for damage and replace them if needed. You should also review your set-up instructions and make sure the attachment is correct. • Should Weight Distribution Trailer Frame Brackets be Able to Move on the Trailer Frame
The chain hanging brackets on a weight distribution system, such as # RP66022, should be fixed and not able to move. The bars will still be able to move since they hang on chains. So basically, the movement should be at the bars and not the brackets. I have included a link to the right to our informational article on weight distribution and sway control for you.

  • Do I need Weight Distribution Sway Control and Trailer Brakes on 3500 lb Trailer Towed By Ram 1500
I took a look at the Ram's owners manual and it states if the trailer weighs more than 1,000 lbs loaded, it should have its own brakes. Towing the 3500 lb trailer without braking could lead to accelerated brake lining wear, higher brake pedal effort, and longer stopping distances in the truck. I would need to know a little bit more information about the trailer to help you add brakes. I need to know the axle capacity on the trailer. This can usually be found on a sticker on the axle or...

  • Trailer Coupler is Getting Stuck on the Hitch Ball
There are a couple of things that could cause the ball to get stuck in the coupler when trying to uncouple from the truck. First, it could be bound up in there. Moving the tow vehicle and trailer slightly forward or backward can release the tension and allow the ball to come out as intended. If using weight distribution, disengage the spring bars before uncoupling the trailer. If that isn't the issue then there could be a problem with the coupler. Something may need to be adjusted, cleaned,...

The bars must have the curved lip at the end that can seat into the # RP26002. Higher rated bars would definitely help with this as they would handle your tongue weight better, but we do not have 1,200 pound round bars for Reese systems.
