Trailer Coupler is Getting Stuck on the Hitch Ball

Updated 11/30/2015 | Published 11/28/2015

Question:

When I start cranking the trailer up it pulls on the ball instead of releasing, lifting the back of the tow vehicle. This has just started happening. I have had the trailer for over 10 years.

There are a couple of things that could cause the ball to get stuck in the coupler when trying to uncouple from the truck. First, it could be bound up in there. Moving the tow vehicle and trailer slightly forward or backward can release the tension and allow the ball to come out as intended. If using weight distribution, disengage the spring bars before uncoupling the trailer.

If that isn't the issue then there could be a problem with the coupler. Something may need to be adjusted, cleaned, or lubricated so that it fully releases like it is supposed to. We do have repair kits for some couplers. I would just need to know the manufacturer, model, and style of coupler.

And something else that will help is ball grease, # 58117. This will reduce friction while also protecting the ball and coupler and makes coupling/uncoupling a little easier.
