Pro Tip: Before you invest in a weight distribution hitch, make sure your cargo is evenly loaded in your trailer to keep the weight balanced. If you still have a hard time even after balancing your tongue weight, a weight distribution hitch should help.

Easy to Upgrade to Active Sway Control

Easily upgrade this weight distribution hitch with the Curt MV with sway control

  • This system doesn't control sway out of the box - but you can remedy that later on
  • You can add a bar-style friction sway control to either side of your trailer
    • Uses friction to force your trailer back in line when it gets pushed off course
    • Has to be removed at times (e.g. in the rain or when you're backing up), but its adjustable tension is a plus
    • Doesn't work with surge-type actuators

People often conflate sway control with weight distribution. It's understandable because most weight distribution systems on the market today do solve issues with sway.

This system will give you weight distribution only. It doesn't have any sway control built in. But if you find that you need sway control later, it's super-easy to upgrade by adding on bar-style friction sway control (17200 - sold separately). This option allows you to easily dial in the amount of tension with the turn of a handle. This adjustability is nice (even if it takes you a few trips to get it just right), but it doesn't play well with surge-type actuators, and it will have to be removed when backing up and any time you tow on wet or slippery roads.

Why Use a Weight Distribution Hitch?

Diagram showing weight distribution on a truck and towing a camper

  • Prevents uneven tire wear on your vehicle and trailer
  • Keeps the rear of your tow vehicle from sagging
  • Lets you tow to the max capacity of your trailer hitch
  • Stops your headlights from pointing up at the sky
  • Gives you control over steering your rig

Selecting the Right Weight Distribution System

  • Think "Goldilocks"
    • If you go for overbuilt, you'll have a rigid ride
    • If it's not strong enough, it's virtually useless
  • Let your tongue weight be your guide

Your tongue weight is the first thing you need to know when figuring out which weight distribution system you need. Most people think that if they get the highest-rated system possible, it'll be smooth sailing. But actually, this will create a rigid ride and a bouncing trailer. On the other hand, if the system isn't strong enough, it won't be able to distribute the weight properly, making it virtually useless.

Once you know your trailer's tongue weight, add it to the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Then just choose a weight distribution system rated for that combined tongue weight.

This has worked well over the year. Very satisfied.

Had a chance to try this out several times on a 25' aluminum car hauler, work's great, total control. Thank you!

by:

Great service, helped me find what I needed. Shipped right away. Purchased the C17123 10 hole 7" drop shank as well for my lifted F-150. Thanks to the sales person to get me the correct parts.

by:

Product was received the next day. Packaging looks good. It is for someone else so hasn’t been opened yet. He will use it for anew trailer he bought to haul his duck decoys. Thanks for speedy shipping.

by:

E-trailer had just what I needed for a good price. The shorter than standard length distribution arms were just what I needed for my toy hauler. Product was well packaged. The delivery was unexpectedly FAST!!! Awesome service!

by:

Curt weight distribution hitch ,,fit my v nose trailer perfect after your recommendation....excellent service...fast delivery.....will buy again

by:

I will never tow a trailer again without a distribution hitch.

by:

This is a great, easy to use weight distributing hitch that fit perfected on a small 8x12' trailer and a minivan. Highly recommended. Solid and easy to assemble

by:

Product was great but the service was better!!! The carton arrived apparently damaged by the carrier with multiple pieces missing. The e-trailer staff had replacement parts sent immediately and they arrived two days later. The transaction was taken care of by e-trailer without any hesitation. Service better than I receive at many places in person. Well Done e-trailer.

by:

Perfect fit, exactly as described.

Assembly
instructions are lacking a little, but it is pretty straightforward to assemble.

My first order wasn’t the right setup for what I needed, but I called Brent J at etrailer.com and he helped me get the first order returned. Then he took the time to get my order right (to research it) by looking at diagrams and pictures making sure it was what I needed and that I got everything I needed. He was so nice and very professional. The Curt Weight Distribution Hitch with Trunnion Bars (Part # C17333) was perfect for my setup. My truck pulls my trailer so smooth and I can tell a BIG difference now that I have the hitch how even and well-balanced it pulls. There’s no swaying either. So go to etrailer.com or talk to Brent J. They have all your towing needs and more, and at great prices too! Thank you so much!!

by:

This is a serious hitch if you are needing one that allows for up to1,500lb.tongue weight.
The build quality is very good and it fits our trailer which due to the V- Nose has limited space for the traditional longer trunnion spring arms.
We also like the spacers that are used to position the head for placement of the spring arms.
Unlike the head locks on most hitches, there is absolutely no way for this to slip or move after it is adjusted.
We have no doubts that we will get years of service from it.
Thank you etrailer.com!

That hitch has been great! Our approximate 7,000lb., 27 ft. enclosed race car hauling trailer, is now very stable. With the bars and hitch we were using, which were much to small, it was a real handful, now you hardly know it is back there!Great piece of equipment!

by:

Was in stock and delivered next day! Andy was helpful in getting what I needed.

by:

We're a first time travel trailer owners. I purchased the CURT weight distribution hitch. It's heavy duty and easy to assemble. Then I purchased the Draw-tite electronic brake control with a Tekonsha wire harness for my truck. After watching you tube to see how to find the brake control cable on my truck and assemble the electronic brake control it all works perfectly.

by:

Exactly what I needed for my new travel trailer. Needed a hitch to support almost 1400lbs tongue weight, this fit the bill. Package was a little damaged, but its hard to hurt a hitch, nothing was damaged. Curt install video is the first thing that comes up on youtube. Description says "short arm" model, but it looks pretty standard to me, about the same size as my old Reese hitch.

etrailer is amazing, shipping was free, and it arrived to me in 4 days!

by:

Heavy duty kit. Worked well with addition to airbags on Durango to pull a 24' race trailer. Like the bars, much better than the round bars I had previously. Handles better also.

by:

It's a nicely made unit. Very heavy duty. Easy instructions to follow.

by:

Product is exactly as described. Great customer service and extremely fast shipping.

by:

I was hesitant to order here instead of [online] Price was cheaper with etrailer and delivered on date promised. My o ly regret was not realizing my ball was a 1" shank vice the required 1 1/4" shank. Thank you

by:

Great price, really good quality hitch. Seems like the best hitch for the money

by:

Excellent hitch for towing large trailers, easy to set up.

Hitch was completely worn out after a few months of daily use.

I do not have any pictures. I scraped it last fall. The pockets where the arms go in the hitch were completely worn out almost completely through.

When there is excessive wear in the trunnion socket in he head unit, it indicates that there may be an overload on the bars or that its needs more lubrication. You will want to make sure trailer and vehicle are as level as possible. If not level then you will want to re-measure and adjust until it is. The spring bars need to have a heavy, fibrous grease applied to the top section of each spring bar.

  • Can I Use a Weight Distribution Hitch on a Large Aluminum Trailer
When it comes to using a weight distribution hitch on your aluminum trailer, the main concern isn't only the interaction of the two metals but a lot of occasions the aluminum frame isn't strong enough to be used with a steel weight distribution system. You will want to consult with the trailer's manufacturer to determine if your trailer can be used with a weight distribution system. For a trailer with a larger frame size you would need a weight distribution hitch that used chain hangers...

The Curt Short-Arm Weight Distribution Systems have trunnion bars which measure 28-3/8 inches, according to the manufacturer. These are pretty common on V-nose trailers, and come with a couple of different tongue weight options. I'll go ahead and list those out below so you can choose the right one: - Curt Short-Arm Weight Distribution System with Shank - Trunnion Bar - 10,000 lbs GTW, 1,000 lbs TW # C17332 - Curt Short-Arm Weight Distribution System with Shank - Trunnion Bar - 15,000...

  • Curt Short-Arm VS Regular Weight Distribution System Spring Bar Length
The standard spring bar length for Curt trunnion bar weight distribution systems is 30-5/8 inches. Anything that has 28-3/8 inch long bars is a short bar system even if it does not explicitly state it. What you might be able to do is use chain hangers # C17005 in place of the brackets that mount on the trailer. These hangers will mount to the sides of the frame so provided that the sides of the frame are clear you can use these hangers. The other option is to replace the system you have...

  • Weight Distribution Hitch for 10-Foot Dump Trailer with a GVW of 11,000-lbs
Weight distribution systems are meant to be "tuned" for a specific trailer tongue weight. This is because in order to do their job - pushing trailer tongue weight (TW) forward onto the truck's front axle - the system's spring bars have to have the correct stiffness.
