Optronics UCL178 Series GloLight LED Utility Light Diagram

Innovative GloLight Design

This white LED light serves as an exterior light for your trailer, RV, or other application. The light gives your RV or trailer a distinctive look that's completely street legal. This Optronics GloLight has a unique solid light pattern when lit, so your lights stand out from the rest. Optronics GloLights are a great way to add both style and value to your RV or trailer.

Sonically Sealed, Waterproof Trailer Light

The waterproof construction of this light makes it ideal for use on trailers that may be submerged, like a boat trailer. The housing and lens are sonically sealed together to create a single unit, which means that water will not get into the light and damage the diodes or circuit board.

LEDs vs. Incandescent Lights

The long-lasting, cool-burning LEDs make this light the perfect replacement for incandescent trailer lighting. LED lights are more efficient, use less power, and last much longer than incandescent lights.

PL-3 Wiring Connection

Optronics PL-3 Connection

This light has an industry-standard PL-3 connection as pictured above. The light accepts a 3-prong plug (sold separately).

Surface-Mount Light

Surface-mount lights install flat against the surface of the trailer, so a hole does not need to be cut into the trailer for the light. This type of light is installed using a flange or bracket that has mounting holes. And mounting hardware is used to secure the light to the trailer.

Video Transcript for All About the GloLight LED Trailer Utility Tail Light

Speaker 1: Today we're taking a look at the Optronics Glow Light taillight and reverse light. This waterproof light provides a red taillight, and white reverse light for your trailer. Has the glow light lens that creates a solid circle of light, with a nice smooth appearance. So the outer band glows red, and the inner area is white when you activate the reverse function of the vehicle and trailer. It's a sonically sealed, waterproof housing and lens unit that is submersible. Features durable surface mount technology. When it comes to the construction of the LED circuit board, that better withstands shock and vibration, and allows for improved heat distribution.

Now LEDs make great replacements for incandescent lights. They last longer, they burn brighter, and they're more efficient. With LEDs, you don't have to worry about replacing bulbs, and you don't have to worry about brittle filaments. We're looking a polycarbonate housing and acrylic lens. It's a surface mount installation, with the built in mounting flange. Mounting hardware not included.

And then here on the back, it accepts an industry standard three prong plug, which is sold separately. Taking a look at the overall dimensions real quick, then we'll hook it up to power, so you can see what it looks like with power running to it. Edge to edge going this direction, is about 7-1/2 inches. Edge to edge this direction is about 3-5/16. And then the overall depth, that's back to front, is about 1-1/8 inches deep. The mount holes are separated on center going this direction, by about 2-3/4 inches.

And then going this direction, they're separated on center by about seven inches, maybe 6-15/16 inches, right in that area. Alright we're going to go ahead and hook it up to power, that we can see what it looks like. So you can see here, it sends out a really nice, clear, consistent signal. This is that outer band that's red in color. And then when we activate the reverse function of the trailer, that center area will glow white. That contains a total of 22 diodes, or LEDs, so the multi diode design really helps optimize the overall light output.

Power draw at 12.8 volts, is 0.50 amps. And Optronics puts a lifetime warranty on the LEDs. That's going to do it for today's look at the Glow Light taillight and reverse light from Optronics.

I really like the bright back up lights. It does take a little extra work for the back up lights. - Sorry this pic doesn't show the backup/stop lights but this is the great little chuckwagon we put them on.

by:

The lights are good and standard size, but they seem to have a slightly off plug receptical. I ordered 6 of them and all seemed to be the same. I had to bend my connectors with a pliers a little bit to get them plugged in.

by:

Being used to put back up lights on trailer. Never had back up lights before. Very well made.

by:

Still good

I gave 4 stars because I really thought they’d be brighter for backup lighting. They definitely do help in letting others know you’r intentions from behind.

We installed these clearance lights on a 16-foot tandem axle trailer a year ago that is primarily used for hauling firewood. We use it in the forest and most of the road miles are gravel. Since the lights are not housed in a recessed light fixture, we made one of steel pipe with the leading edge extended ¼ inch to deflect flying road rocks and running through brush in the forest. All the wiring under the trailer is in conduit and all the wiring is Ancor brand marine grade. Had we installed the lights as demonstrated in a picture on the etrailer.com web site, the lights would have been damaged quickly in our service conditions. The Led lights are working fine although they run a bit hotter than preferred which may lead to a shortened life. Tip: Never use copper clad aluminum automotive wire from China on trailers as aluminum is the sacrificial metal for cathodic corrosion and the wire conductors will soon disappear into powder.

by:

This one is for the “driver” side. It has the lens on the bottom for lighting the license plate. (It does not include the license plate holder. I like this one because you just push in the wires. I recommend this light.

by:

Upgrading our 1998 Coleman Grandview, the old incandescent just seemed too dim.
Nice light, only suggestion would be to list some wiring options, was a bit confusing going from the old Bargman to the new LED.
But I read through the Bargman page here and got squared away.

Pic is LED before anchoring compared to the stock on the right. BIG improvement.

etrailer does provide a wide range of products with different price points so the customer has a lot of choices to make the decision that is right for her\him. You also offer good online support documentation and your technical staff is also very helpful in helping the customer make the right choices.
Unfortunately, you left me with a very bad experience. I ordered a full set of lighting & wiring to redo our quad trailer from the 7-pin plug to reverse lights. A large order. I erroneously ordered 2 reverse\turn single lights, which is on me, so I expected a restocking fee (a little excessive, but that's the inventory business). I had to return the 2 wrong lights and order the correct one. I returned both lights, but etrailer said they only received one, which I was 99% sure I returned both. You had no interest or showed any flexibility considering maybe I was correct. This is a one year review you have asked me to submit and the light you claimed I did not return, still has not shown up in my garage. I liked dealing with you on numerous occasions, but I have taken my business elsewhere. That was a sad experience.

by:

Amazing upgrade from the old metal lights even with led replacement bulb in the metal cans. One video is the halo tail lights installed, the other is chasing a ground issue with the old lights for comparison.

by:

These lights were added to my cargo trailer that I pull behind my motorcycle. These help to make sure that people see me when I am on the road. The lights were easy to install with the grommets and pigtails that I ordered at the same time. All the products worked together well and made the project easy to do. Love these lights and will buy more if needed.

by:

The Igor worked great. I had a heck of a time trying to order lights for the trailer - either not getting the ones I intended getting or mismatched lights. But you came through like me a champ. Thanks.

by:

Great Light! Put two on the back of a toyhauler for backing up.
You will need the grommet and pigtail to do it right.
I had to cut two oval holes for mounting in trailer frame. Take your time with the layout and get the right sized hole saw, makes installation pretty easy.

by:

Great Product, it's good quality and will fit perfectly for the trailer I use in my Air Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration Business. The only problem is I ordered the wrong side. Wasn't sure if by the which one was the left or the right? I was looking at the trailer form the front when I determined it was the left one but it appears your suppose to look at the back of the trailer when you do that. Guess I will be ordering the otherside here shortly. Maybe I can get an exchange or if not then I will have a spare and hope if it does get broken again it's the other side. Etrailer has some really good quality stuff at a very good price. I got my hidden hitch from them at a Great Price. They even had a video that showed me how to install it. A couple of the local places here wanted 3 times the amount of what I paid to provide the hitch and install it for me. Will never go anywhere else for any trailer parts or accessories.

by:

I have had these installed for a year now on my 14ft utility trailer. I love these lights! They are strong, durable, bright, and look so super cool at night! Most recently, last month, I trailered 1500 miles and through the mountains in West Virginia. They held up through curves and bumps and rainstorms and even dime-sized hail! I would recommend these to anyone who needs this style of light! I wish I had brackets enough to put two on each side... just so it would look extra bada**!

by:

These lights are totally amazing, very bright and small footprint, just need a 3/4 drill bit and they fit like a glove, will buy more for other boat trailer upgrades.

by:

I have a Triton trailer which had a blown out incandescent tail light.
I decided to upgrade all the lights to LED.
It took me only 30 minutes to change out all 13 lights. I used a little silicone spray and a small screwdriver and the old lights came right out of the rubber grommets and the new lights fit perfect.
They are really bright and makes a big difference, glad I did the upgrade!

by:

Love how bright they are. If you are planning a surface mount, as I did, you probably won't want a pigtail. Space was at a premium and my access holes are small. I just cut the connector leaving 3 inches and tied into the existing bundles.

by:

I really like these lights. I use them for my rear lighting and rear side marker/turn signals. I went out of the way to use these on my trailer which involved reinforcing the frame since I had to cut a large piece out to install them. Well worth it. They are bright and have a distinctive look.

  • Submersible Reverse Light and 7-Way Kit for Boat Trailer with 4-Way
For a submersible reverse light we have the GloLight # UCL178RFP2B which would work great on a boat trailer. You'll need the pigtail harness part # A45CB which the white wire would get grounded to the boat trailer frame and the red wire to the reverse light circuit of the trailer. We have a great kit for adapting your trailer 4-way to a 7-way too with the part # HS381-9000 which would be the easiest way to install the 7-way and wire in the reverse lights.

  • Troubleshooting Red Ring of GloLight LED Trailer Utility Tail Light Staying on
Since the GloLight LED Trailer Utility Tail Light # UCL178RFP2B only has a max 0.50 amp draw I believe that you are on the right track where a little bit of power is still on the power wire and it is illuminating that ring. What would remedy this issue you are having is to install a Light Bulb Load-Resistors # DI34ZR on the brown wire that connects to the running light circuit. These build up resistance so that it actually takes you sending power back for that function to activate the ring.
