Create a more stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all of the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, and it also gives you the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Blue Ox weight distribution system

Selecting a Weight Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your towing setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight distribution system.

2 Types of Sway Control

The TrackPro features 2 different sway control technologies to provide the best towing experience possible.

Positive Caster Keeps Trailer Centered

Blue Ox TrackPro Positive Caster

The TrackPro is built with a positive caster angle - pointed toward the rear of your trailer - to help stop sway before it even starts. This is the same technology that vehicles use to stay centered on the road. When you turn a corner in your car and let go of the steering wheel, the wheel automatically corrects itself and returns to center. This is caster taking over. Likewise, the TrackPro features a positive caster angle built into the hitch. Working in tandem with the tapered spring bars to create a self-centering force, this caster angle helps to keep your trailer consistently centered behind your tow vehicle, even during high winds and sharp turns, resulting in a smoother towing experience.

Steel-on-Steel Friction Corrects Sway

Blue Ox TrackPro Steel-on-Steel Friction

While this system does its best to keep your trailer in line, the TrackPro is also able to correct sway should it occur. Unlike many traditional weight distribution systems with chain-style setups, the TrackPro uses steel brackets to hold the ends of the spring bars, and therefore your trailer, in place. While chain-style setups do a good job with weight distribution alone, they aren't really designed to limit sway, so they typically allow a good amount of side-to-side play.

In addition to better holding the trailer in line, these brackets create friction with the spring bars to combat sway that might occur in heavy winds or following sudden maneuvers. When this type of sway happens, the tapered ends of the spring bars slide within the L-brackets that are mounted on the trailer tongue. When each spring bar moves forward or backward, or side to side, it rubs along the bracket, creating friction. This friction limits the movement of the spring bar, which minimizes further side-to-side movement of the trailer. The steel-on-steel friction that occurs with the TrackPro's spring bars is the same sort of friction that is used with locomotives that pull loaded railcars that weigh multiple tons, so you know it'll be highly effective.

Fast, Easy Setup

Blue Ox TrackPro Hitch Head

Many weight distribution systems require you to manually adjust the pitch of the hitch head by stacking washers. This can be a tedious, trial-and-error process where you have to unhook your trailer, disassemble the head to add or remove washers to get the desired tilt, put it all back together, and then determine if you have the correct placement. If the pitch still isn't right, you have to do it all over again.

The TrackPro removes all of that hassle with an easy-to-use hitch head that has the required pitch already built into it. Whereas other systems require washers to help achieve the proper tension in the head, the positive caster angle built into the TrackPro ensures the proper pitch, so there's no need to manually adjust the tilt. The only adjustment that may be needed is the placement of the head on the shank. Move the head up or down along the weight distribution shank to achieve the proper rise or drop for your setup. No additional, fine-tune adjustment is needed.

Video Transcript for Review of Blue Ox Weight Distribution Hitch - 8K Underslung WD With Sway Control - BLU23FR

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. In this video, we're gonna take a quick look at this Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution System with Sway Control and we're gonna go over some of the features and kind of compare it to some other options that we have here at etrailer.com, make sure you're getting the right one for your setup. So if you're not familiar with what a weight distribution system is or does, basically speaking, it's going to distribute the weight of your trailer across all the axles of your tow vehicle and your trailer, so it's gonna level your whole setup out to give you more stability and control. So rather than having all of your trailer's tongue weight pushing down on that one connection point of your coupler and hitch ball, which can oftentimes cause your tow vehicle to squat at the rear end, putting a lot of strain on your rear suspension system, causing your tires to wear unevenly, can bring your front end up, causing your steering to be pretty light and your headlights to be shining into the eyes of oncoming traffic, this system is going to help level that all out so you don't have to experience those issues. Most weight distribution systems are going to function on the same basic principles. They're gonna use spring bars that are under tension that give you that lift that you need to get everything leveled out.

Where they differ mostly is in how they connect to your trailer's frame and how they achieve the sway control. So this system is going to use two different methods to give you that sway control to keep your trailer in line so it's not moving side to side if you experience big gusts of wind or a big semi truck comes by, something like that. So when you're considering what weight distribution system to get, there's few main things I would suggest looking at. The first for this system is that it is designed specifically for your underslung couplers. Now, those are kind of rare.

They're not the typical coupler, as you can see on the left side of that overslung or top-mounted coupler is more standard. That's mounted on the top of your trailer's frame. This is designed specifically for your underslung couplers that are mounted on the bottom of your trailer's frame. So if you are needing, if you do have a overslung coupler on the top of your frame, we do have lots of other options available for you, but this is designed specifically for your underslung couplers. So the next thing is gonna be your weight capacity, or your trailer's weight.

So this system is going to have an 8,000 pound gross towing weight. That's the weight of your trailer plus the load included. It's going to have a max tongue weight of 800 pounds and you're gonna need a minimum tongue weight of 600 pounds, so a tongue weight range of 600 to 800 pounds. You wanna make sure that your system is going to be within that range. That includes all the weight behind your tow vehicle's rear axle and in front of your trailer's front axle, and that's gonna be your tongue weight, so if you get a weight distribution system that's rated too high for your setup, it's gonna be too stiff, so it's not gonna give you the stability and ride comfort that you need.

If you get one that's underrated, it's not gonna be enough for you, so you wanna make sure that that is a main component. Like I said, we do have lots of other options available here at etrailer.com so if you do need a higher weight capacity, if your trailer's higher than this weight capacity, we do have other options available for you. There are a few that are different style that are a lower capacity as well. So this system is going to slide right into your 2-inch-by-2-inch trailer hitch receiver on your tow vehicle. You do wanna make sure that your hitch is rated for use with weight distribution. Not all of them are and obviously your whole setup is only as strong as the weakest link, so you wanna make sure you're not overtaxing your hitch. They do include this standard 5/8 inch pin and clip to hold this in your hitch. We do also sell walking pins if you're wanting to add a little extra security, make sure no one can come along and just pull off your clip and take off with your setup. Then our shank is a adjustable height shank so we can move our hitch head up and down along these seven holes here so we can accommodate trailers with different coupler heights. To measure that, we're going to go from the top inside edge of your receiver tube, which is about the top of our shank here, down to our ball platform, which is about where your coupler's gonna sit. So if we have this in the drop position, as we do here, if we set our head at the lowest position available, which we have set up here, we're gonna have a max drop of two inches. So if your coupler sits two inches lower than the top edge of your receiver tube, this will accommodate that. We can also flip this over and use it in the rise position and then if we set our head at the highest point, we'll have a max rise of eight inches. So if your coupler sets eight inches higher than your hitch, that will accommodate that. And then of course we have all those incremental changes between those two extremes so that we can make sure that we're getting the right height for our trailer. Make sure everything's gonna be nice and level. So our head unit is going to have this 2 5/16 inch hitch ball that comes pre-installed so that's one less thing that you're gonna have to buy separately and install yourself. It's torqued down to the appropriate specs. This does have the required tilt built into the head, which is a big thing for me. One of the reasons I like this system is because with most weight distribution systems, you are going to have to have a tilt in the head, but a lot of them use washers on a pin at the backside of the head here so you are gonna have to stack a certain amount of washers to get it tilted appropriately, and if that's not the right tilt, then you'll have to take washers off or add washers to it and oftentimes you're having to disconnect your head unit 'cause it's down there where it's hard to reach, so that can be kind of a hassle. Having that tilt built in is gonna be much more convenient for you, so one less thing to worry about, one of the things I really like about this TrackPro system. This does also have a positive castor angle in the hitch head so that's gonna be the first part of our sway control system, one of the two methods that they use in this system, so that is going to help keep your trailer centered and help to prevent sway before it begins. So that caster is kind of like on your vehicle, so when you're turning your steering wheel and you let go, it's going to automatically come back to center and that's the caster at work, so this is gonna use similar methodology to help keep your trailer in line there. This does also have these grease Zerks on the backside of our trenyons here so very easy to hook up your grease gun, pump some grease in there, keep those lubricated and functioning properly, so very easy to maintain. Our tapered spring bars here are going to connect to our head unit with these included pin and clips, so very simple to slide your spring bar through, line up those holes, pass that pin and clip through and you have a nice solid connection there. And these spring bars are going to give you the bend that you need for the tension to give you the nice level ride for your whole setup. And one, another really nice thing about this system is that these spring bars are interchangeable so there are other spring bars that we have here on our site that give you higher weight capacities so if you we're to ever get a bigger trailer and you wanted to change your setup, instead of having to buy a whole new weight distribution system, you can just switch out these arms. Very simple to just pull out these, put the new ones in, use those clips, and that's gonna give you that higher weight capacity. These are going to flex appropriately for a nice controlled ride and give you that stability that you need. The spring bars are then going to connect to your trailer's frame with these brackets here. These are clamp-on brackets, so you're not gonna have to drill into your trailer's frame at all. These will clamp around a trailer frame up to six inches tall and these can be mounted 20 inches back from your hitch ball up to 25 inches back so it's gonna give you about five inches of wiggle room there to accommodate your frame-mounted items like gas tanks, battery boxes, tool boxes, generators, that sort of thing. The spring bars are going to be on this L bracket here and that's going to be the second part of our weight distribution system, so that rigid metal-on-metal connection is gonna help keep your trailer in line during sudden maneuvers and the high speed winds and that sort of thing. It's gonna keep it from swaying too much. One of the negatives of that steel-on-steel design is that it can be pretty noisy having that steel squeaking as it's moving across there, so some other systems use chains to hold the spring bars to your trailer frame, but typically those don't give you that same sway control capability 'cause the chains move too much. There are a few that kind of hold the chains in place on either side so that you still have some sway capabilities but just something to consider there. To get these mounted in place, or to get your setup hooked up, and once you have your brackets mounted on your trailer frame, you'll wanna make sure you get the rest of it installed on your tow vehicle. And then you'll use your trailer's tongue jack to raise your trailer up a little bit to take some of the pressure off at your spring bars, then you can use the included lift lever here. It's just gonna hook underneath your spring bar and then allow you to raise that up onto that L bracket. And then you can put in your retaining bracket here to make sure that spring bar's gonna stay in place and put the clip through. It's very simple to do. And then once you have both sides done, you can lower your trailer's jack to put that tension back on those spring bars. This is constructed of a steel construction so it is gonna be very durable for you. It's got a black powder coat finish on it to help resist rust and corrosion. It is made here in the USA so you can trust it's made to the high-quality standards we've come to know and trust for products made here in the US and it does come with a limited lifetime warranty so if you would have any issues, you're more than welcome to reach out to us here at etrailer.com. They do include instructions, not only to get everything assembled properly, but also to help you get it installed and get your trailer set up so that everything's gonna work right for you. They also include a couple additional things, safety chain links extensions. So if your safety chains don't quite reach your hitch anymore, you can put these on to extend those. They also include a hitch ball reducer sleeve so if you we're to ever need to switch out your hitch ball, your new one had a one-inch diameter shank and this would allow you to reduce that opening to accommodate that and make sure it's still gonna be nice and snug fit in there. So comparing this to other weight distribution systems, looking at your good, better, best options, your best option is kind of in a category all on its own. The ProPride style, they're all gonna use basically the same weight distribution system, it's just the way that sway control works. So the ProPride is in a category all on its own, much higher price point. This system I would say is somewhere between your good and better so it's using basic technology. I do like that the tilt is built into the head. I like that the spring bars can be changed if you get a different setup. I'm not crazy about that steel-on-steel friction. I think the chains might do a little bit better of a job, especially the style that has the channels for the chains to fit into so that you still get your sway control, but if you're just looking at, is it gonna get the job done, I think this is gonna do a good job for you. Doesn't have some of the bells and whistles that some of the higher-end models do, but it is still gonna do a good job of leveling out your trailer, just like all weight distribution systems will, and then that sway control I think is gonna be decent for you. So that completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..

Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution w/Sway Control - 7-Hole Shank - Underslung - 8K GTW, 800 lbs TW - BLU23FR

Average Customer Rating:  4.5 out of 5 stars   (181 Customer Reviews)

Minimize trailer sway and ensure a level, stable ride with this weight distribution system. Positive caster angle works to keep your trailer centered and steel-on-steel friction corrects sway. Works w/ underslung couplers. 2-5/16" Ball included.

by:

The TrackPro parts list listed items 14 and 15 as 2-5/16" and 2" Hitch balls respectively, only the 2-5/16" ball was included and I needed the 2" hitch ball. Now I'm having to have the 2-5/16" hitch ball removed from the underslung hitch head assembly and get a 2" hitch ball attached. Looking forward to getting it all hooked up, I do expect a great improvement in the towing experience.

Cannot comment yet on the product. Product arrived by UPS heavily damaged. Some parts fell out of the box and others were missing. etrailer is sending out replacement parts. etrailer was excellent in understanding problem and expediting shipment of replacement parts.

by:

It was installed professionally by camping world. Coating is all coming off. Arms pop out during travel. The square pins fall though slots. The angled brackets that mount to camper chassis are failing. Its the worst hitch I have ever owned. Literally.

by:

I like the hitch and it works great with my '07 Tundra and 27' Travel Trailer. It makes the two feel like you're driving a single vehicle and Cross winds and buffeting from passing semi's is virtually unnoticeable. Unfortunately, the Powder coating leaves a bit to be desired and warrants a significant mark down in the rating.

Pros: Easy of installation and hooking up the hitch. Adjustments are also very simple.

Cons: The "Powder Coating" is atrocious. It showed up flaking out of the box and just continued flaking during the installation. So, it started immediately surface rusting. I didn't think it worth returning and I guess I will just touch it up with spray paint as needed. Powder coating should be significantly tougher than what I see on this hitch. If it wasn't for this I would absolutely give it 5 stars. In the picture with the 2 bolts is the most obvious example of the flaking powder coat.

by:

My only gripe with etrailer is shipping quality. This is a heavy item, well constructed, heavy duty, not lightweight. To ship this in a standard cardboard box without reinforcement is nuts. When delivered by UPS this box had gapping holes and part of the contents were protruding outside the shipping box. My UPS driver stated that such heavy items should be attached to a wood skeleton inside the box to keep from moving around during shipment. To my amazement all the parts were present, albeit banged up a bit with paint damage and gouging. So be aware that you may find your order in similar condition. etrailer responds to me with yada yada. Not real happy with this one but the unit itself is quite robust although a little black enamel will be required.

by:

Love this hitch system. I was hesitant to spend the money but I am so glad that I did. I have had the system for about a year now and it has impressed me every time I use it. I recently put a 3.5” lift kit on my truck and with the easy adjustments on the hitch system, I was able to accommodate for the lift in about 20 minutes. Would recommend

by:

First my truck and trailer sit and travel LEVEL, and I am pleased with the hitch after loosing one of the original “pins” while traveling(these are the pins that keep the sway bars on L brackets). I ordered the replacement “Pins” Now after a couple thousand miles, I do like how stable the truck and trailer are when other vehicles pass, the side push pull is much less. If the hitch came with the replacement “Pins” this would be a 5 Star Review.

by:

This thing is amazing! I bought this to haul my 24’ car (toy) hauler behind my 03 Suburban which has coil springs instead of leaf springs. This hitch has made a world of difference. I honestly was shocked at the difference it made. It almost feels like I’m not hauling a trailer at all.

by:

I bought this in April '22 for our new trailer. The second day of our trip to Alaska, one of the Retaining Keys with the cotter pin fell off. It was while hooking up to our campsite that we saw it was gone and the spring bar bar had been free of mooring. Luckily we had a C Bolt and duck tape to hold the one sway bar without the retaining key and taped up the other to make sure it didn't fall off on the rest of our journey. When we called Blue Ox they sent two day to AK the two packages of the retaining key w/step. These turned out different than the ones that came on the TracPro and are thicker and shorter - I think these were suppose to come with the TracPro WD/Sway and should have been in the package when we got it. There is too much play between the sring bar and the L Bracket with the Retaining key that was in our order. Pictures for reference. If you order the Blue Ox TracPro, call make and sure you get the correct Retaining Keys with it, you should not have to buy them separately.

by:

Bought this to reduce rear sag in truck and you would think installing is pretty common sense but apparently it isn't. Instructions aren't very clear and since sad didn't go away at all, I'm guessing it isn't installed correctly. Instructions need to be MORE clear than they are otherwise you'll need to pay a professional to install it as I have no idea if it's correct or not.

by:

Easy to install haven’t driven the truck yet, but it seems to be doing exactly what it needs too.

Trailer hooked up with the blue ox the rear of the truck sits 4” higher than without. The nose drops about 3/4” compared to no blue ox. Massive difference in the right direction.

The photos are a 2021 4Runner no extra load in the back. Trailers 17’ ~3,500lbs max. I believe about a 350lb tongue weight and was mostly un-loaded.

by:

Jbars bend to easy and brackets move even when torque to speck

by:

the only problem I had was when the UPS man picked up the box all the nuts, bolts and hair pins fell out. other than that, I have received accurate advice as for the purchase and i am very happy with the hitch and its quality. easy to set yp and sturdy. tows great

by:

Works well. It's my first time with a distribution hitch, so I've no basis for comparison. I tow a 7200# 30' trailer with a 2007 F-150 (full-timer). It took a few trips to the scales to get things right, since I'm very close to my weight limits. Product arrived without the receiver (damaged box). Etrailer was very quick to provide replacement.

On assembly, I discovered that it was sent with incorrect mounting plates. Blue Ox expedited a parts kit. Overall, it seems to work well. I still have to be careful with wind, or I get pushed around on the road. It's mostly a non-issue.

I've traveled about 5-6K miles, and there is some noticeable wear, scoring, and rust developing where the torsion bars meet the trailer. These parts should be easily replaceable, as long as they're still manufactured. You may want to consider spares once you confirm that you have the correct bars. The friction points can develop metal splinters.

The pivots started showing wear after a long stretch of bouncy highway in Iowa. It was within the 1st 1000 miles, so I'll count this as break-in. I just readjusted the mounting point on the trailer at an overnight stop. I haven't had to adjust it since. The slop in the bushings makes for a greasy mess.

Wear gloves and put a plastic bag over the receiver when you remove it, or you're going to get greasy. Also, be careful of how low the receiver hangs down. I've caught it twice in uneven parking lots. I'm leaving it long, since it helps protect the tongue jack.

It meets expectation. Etrailer and Blue Ox provided excellent customer service. I still took one star, since I was on a deadline with work, and my plans got pushed back two weeks because of this. It shouldn't have happened in the first place, but the customer service from both parties was fantastic.

by:

Pulled to Dallas from Jackson, MS and back and they performed as advertised - sway was cut way dawn. When it did occur it was self correcting.

by:

I was told to purchase Blue Ox WDH from a friend. It seems to be very well built easier to attach and back up with still attached to trailer. Also seems to be smoother/quieter then other brands. It must be because of the load bars shape.

by:

These were easy to install on our 2021 Cherokee Wolf Pup trailer. The sway control is very good and the towing is now a very smooth safe ride. Backing is very easy. The only drawback is we have to raise the trailer tongue and truck pretty high with the jack to get them on easily. Lots of tension on the bars. Safety and smooth towing is why we purchased and for this i would recommend purchasing.

by:

Heavy and good quality

by:

Works great.

by:

The difference with and without the Blue Ox is dramatic.
I pull a 25' Airstream with a 2011 Porsche Cayenne with a 3.6 liter 6 cylinder.

The Blue Ox balances the Cayenne to a degree that I didn't think was possible.

This hitch needs to be the first thing you buy when you get an RV.

by:

Hello, The weight distribution seems to work fine. We took our traveler trailer on 2 trips since purchasing the trailer hitch and all the accessories. The sway is just frightening. We have not had any real wind, this was in May and July of this year. But super scary, and when a tractor trailer passes us, even just one, forget it. We are towing with a big Ford Expition also. I would not recommend this model. It was expensive and we will have to figure out what we are going to replace it with. Gil

by:

Item received timely and in good condition. Installation was rather simple, as the instructions were very good and everything for well. However, on of the pins was missing. This was a minor inconvenience, as I was able to find one at the closest hardware store 10 miles away. This is the only reason this is not a five star rating. Upon completion of installation, pulling my grooming trailer with the water tanks partial or full at greater than 55 mph was no longer a harrowing experience that I often wondered if I would survive. If you pull a trailer often, and it had swaying issues, this product is absolutely necessary.

by:

Just
Drove from Colorado to Oregon.
It worked better than our old one. Barely felt the big rigs as they went by.

by:

I received the hitch and the box was falling apart! Obviously the box did not hold up due to the weight of the product during shipment. I will inventory all pieces to make sure everything is still there when I go to open the box.

by:

Best investment I have made in my trailer other than the trailer itself. Works great

  • Recommended Weight Distribution Hitch For 2022 Jayco Jayflight with 665lbs Tongue Weight
I'd be happy to help! First off as long as that 665 tongue weight is a figure you came up with from measuring the tongue weight of your 2022 Jayco Jayflight, then we can use that figure. If you got that number from the factory it's not right, as it does not account for propane, or batteries which dealers install. If you didn't measure your tongue weight use the below article as a guide to do this. Second your trailer has an underslung coupler (Jayco is the main manufacturer to use these)...

In this case your gut is 100% correct - you'll have a nice cushion in margin when it comes to maxing out your 2019 Dodge Durango, but you'll want a weight distribution system to help level out your towing rig and the sway control will do wonders for highway traveling especially when it comes to crosswinds and when larger vehicles pass you. • Which Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution for 2022 Grand Design Imagine XLS 22RBE
Based on the unloaded tongue weight you mentioned the Blue Ox TrackPro weight distribution system you'd want is the part # BLU23FR which has a tongue weight range of 600-800 lbs instead. The part number you referenced would be rated too high which would cause a rougher ride quality.

  • Can a Weight Distribution System be Used on a V-Nose Trailer With 22 Inches of Useable A-Frame?
If you are getting sway issues, I can definitely recommend the Tuson Asymmetric Sway Control # 335TSC-1000. But from the picture and measurements provided, it does not look like we will have a weight distribution option available. I would usually suggest a Curt Short-Arm Weight Distribution System, like the # C17332, but the arms on this, though shorter than typical systems, are still going to be too long.
