Today we're going to be taking a look at the Swagman Tajo wall-mounted kayak storage system, part number S65146. The Swagman Tajo is the perfect way to store your kayak when not in use. It features two J-style cradles with protective padding to help support your kayak. Two included straps come over the top of your kayak and help hold it in place. The straps have a protective material at the buckle to prevent the kayak from getting scratched. It holds one kayak with a weight capacity of 100 pounds. Now let's go ahead and take it off and get a closer look on how it's mounted.
So let's go ahead and start by undoing our cam buckles and then we'll take the longer of the strap, we're going to throw it behind the kayak just to get it out of the way. Now let's lift it off. Now, it's not a bad idea to get an extra set of hands if you need to. Let's go over some quick dimensions that could be helpful when you go about mounting it. So from the top of our hook here to about the bottom right in this area here there's going to be about 13-1/2 inches. It's going to stick out roughly 15-1/2 inches from our mounting hardware.
When not in use both the cradles fold in for compact storage. Simply remove the pin, fold it in, realigning the holes, lock it back in position, and then we've got it. It comes with all the hardware you need to get it installed: eight screws, four for each side. You just need to be sure to drill your 1/8 inch pilot hole so you don't strip them out. It also comes with four spacers, and that's going to be this piece right here. That's to help prolong the life of our padding to ensure it doesn't rub on our wall. Now, a quick safety tip to have is when drilling out your holes and putting your hardware in you just want to make sure that there's no plumbing or any electrical behind it.
Now, it doesn't rightly matter how you have them spaced out or mounted. I would just make sure you have at least two feet between the two or have it within the length of your kayak. As you can see with the kayak off you can really get a closer look at the padding on the hooks and see how it's going to really protect it and prolong the life of our kayak. Now, the whole system is made out of a sturdy steel construction with a gray and black powdered coat finish. So it's going to hold up and provide excellent support for a long time. That's going to complete our look at the Swagman Tajo wall-mounted kayak storage system, part number S65146..

This wall-mounted storage system features 2 cradles with protective padding and 2 tie-down straps to hold your kayak firmly but gently in place, and folds flat against your wall when not in use.Ordering was very easy and I really like the fact that I had reviews from others "with pictures". That helped me tremendously. The items came within 2 days (WOW). I didn't expect that. They are exactly like show and I will be installing them today. I don't expect any problems.
(update after installation)
I have now installed and I would have given a rating of Excellent, but I did not because of 1 problem I had. The screws that come with the product are soooo cheap that they all began to strip out as I installed them. And yes I was using the right Phillips head bit and I even had my drill set to stop if it hit resistance. The Phillips head has very small cross threads. If you look at the pics you'll see what I mean. This Phillips head is too small of threads for a larger 2" screw like this. As such, I ended up having to spend $20 on a screw extraction product (Grabit drill extraction) to get 1 of them out. I since replaced all these crappy screws with ones with better heads that are made of actual metal, not paper-mache that looks like metal. By the way, the Grabit screw extraction tool works great...
Now that they're up, they look great and do perform exactly like I expected. I would definitely recommend these...
Good product, easy to install though as one reviewer mentioned, the heads of the phillips head screws easily strip out and I did so, even when forewarned. The only improvement would be if the angles were adjustable to better fit individual boats. Never-the-less the brackets are working great.

The brackets held up well even under heavy snows over winter with the kayaks in place. I am still happy with the results.
Mounted the kayak rack yesterday and wanted to offer some feedback. In general, a pretty easy process. The screws do seem to be pretty soft; easy to strip a bit, even with 1/8" holes drilled. No disaster, but could be improved. What is wrong is that the straps seem backward. The clamp is mounted so that you must pull up to tighten the strap. Would be better/simpler to pull down on the strap. I see why the longer strap is at the top, but still bad mechanics. I mounted my rack pretty high on the wall, and not being tall, will have a problem using the strap as oriented. In addition, the clamp strap has no means to adjust its length. My kayak (a Poke boat) is pretty slim in cross-section, which makes tightening the strap very difficult unless I get on a ladder. I realize that some of this issue is due to the height that I mounted the rack, but I had to make sure that it put my boat completely out of the way of the car, bikes, etc., with which it shares the space. Would give the rack a good rating, but the odd engineering design and lack of a way to adjust the strap length are disappointing. Overall, does what I need though, just could be a killer rack with some slight changes.
so far so good. i just hung the two sets of Swagman Tajo wall mounting hooks i ordered from etrainler.com. they are being used on a Necky Manitou 13 & a Perception Prodigy 10. i think this is a well designed product; good materials used (with the exception of the material they used which goes under the security strap buckles to protect the kayak...Swagman sort of cheaped out there. the straps themselves are fine), appears robust enough to last for many years of service. i like having the option of laying the hooks flat against the wall when not in use. having the dedicated safety straps attached to the hooks is a plus as well - don't have to use any of my own straps to secure them in place. they were easy enough to install, although if i were to do it again...i certainly would have had a second set of hands/eyes to help me out. the top one went up no problem - it was getting the lower one placed correctly in the space i had available that was the challenge. but, that was my mistake, nothing to do with the product itself. etrailer.com was a pleasure working with; great follow up from their customer service in letting me know the status of my order - which i greatly appreciated. super fast delivery as well, i had the hooks a few days after the order was placed. couldn't be happier with the service!
First of all, eTrailer was great, fast shipping and follow-up emails, even after delivery. I have 2 kayaks so I ordered 2 pairs of the Swagman Tajo Wall Mounts.
The wall mounts went up fine. I like the way I can pull the pin and swing the empty racks toward the wall. I mounted mine high on the exposed garage studs. Next we picked up the kayaks and turned them and set them in the brackets. They went in easy and secure. Next we just strapped them in just for extra security. The Kayaks stick out about 16" from the wall, well out of the way of the garage doors, our truck and SUV.
We love the kayak racks. They are just what I was looking for at a reasonable price. We did have to make minor adjustments on the hanging brackets so the screws are closer together and fit security on our side boards.
A pleased customer
Bought two of these to install our kayaks on the wall in our shed. They are easy to install (studs are not covered), and the kayaks were easy to set in and secure. With these installed, we have freed up significant room in our shed, because we had been hanging a kayak from the ceiling. With the new installation, the kayak protrude less than 18 inches from the wall, but are pushed to the back ensuring they are up and out of the way.
I did notice "information" that stated these would stow the boat and the paddles. There is nothing special for stowing the paddles. For one set of paddles, they are taken apart and set inside the boat. For the other set, which are not collapsible, we placed the paddles "behind" the boat which secures them up and out of the way.
Good, versatile design for wall mounting of kayaks, other slender boats. Boats with a lot of rocker may be difficult to mount due to the limited width of the cradles.
I ordered one set of these racks about two weeks ago. Installed them and decided to ordered two more sets for my other two boats. Yes I have three. My wife says no more boats allowed at our house - think she’s gone crazy. So with great satisfaction I guess I am temporarily retired from ordering any more storage racks or boats - well at least until she goes on a girls trip of something. They were easy to install. One comment about the Phillips head screws stripping, I had no issues. In fact to get the right clearance between the two boats I removed the screws a couple of times and re-secured. N problems with stripping. I think the key is to use a larger Phillips bit and get a straight push into the screw. The price on these racks was reasonable.
I purchased these bars not to mount to a wall, but to mount to a stand that I made out of wood that I could store in the garage or take down to the lake on weekends at the cottage. The Swagman product works great and I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for an inexpensive way to store kayaks. On-line, I'd have to pay $300-$400 for a good quality stand and after purchasing the hooks and wood, I spent less than $200 without my time of course.
These are a good quality product and well worth the low price!
Works well except the screws need to be stainless steel
Easy to install, boats hug the wall, and they’re inside the garage. This was exactly what we needed to fit the cars back into the garage. Very well-made rack.
Order this for my third kayak. Needed to get off floor. Ordered, received in short time, and installed. It was perfect for my needs. In fact I just ordered two more - other two boats needed same quality securement. My old system was pipe and noodles and didn’t swing out of the way when needed.
I never did receive notice my order had shipped, however it still arrived within 1week. I screwed two pairs of these racks directly to the exposed studs in my garage - I was done in minutes. I didn't have any trouble with the screw heads stripping, just drill pilot holes like the directions suggest. Light weight, but seem solid enough. Almost don't need the straps, but they're good insurance, and keep my kayaks snug to the wall.

Still satisfied, no issues, I like swinging them out of the way when not in use.
We bought these to store SUPs and kayaks on the verticals on our dock. They work perfectly. One arm was broken when our granddaughter came in on a SeaDoo at a higher speed than necessary. We cannot complain; it broke cleanly and no one was injured. They were pretty easy to install for ou application. Delivery was very quick. And they were a good value, not cheap, but worth the price. I'd recommend them.

We still look ve them, although thieves sliced through the straps and stole both our kayaks.
Bought a pair of these last year and mounted them to the pilings of a pier to store a tandom kayak. Was curious to see how they would hold up in a salt water environment. They held up so well that I bought another pair this year because the first set went home and was mounted in the garage.
After 5-6 months of complete exposure to the elements these hangers look almost new. A little rust around the mounting holes because the screw heads chipped the paint but that's to be expected. One of the foam pads developed a slight tear. The straps and buckles are fine. Didn't use the screws supplied in the kit because stainless steel screws have to be used in that environment.
You can purchase these with confidence that they'll hold up. etrailer also a pleasure, again, to work with.
These were exactly what I needed for storing two 14' kayaks on the wall of our garage. Mounting was easy and I took care to drill proper pilot holes and use a good quality screw driver. With that, I had no issues with the screws as others have mentioned. . eTrailer is excellent to work with and I appreciated their communication and updates throughout from purchase to delivery.
Built well, and really minimizes the space needed to store my kayak. The foam works well to protect the kayak and the wall mounts have an extender that keeps the foam clear of the wall when swinging the arms in.
If I get a second kayak, these are the racks I'm storing it on!
I put up our two sets of kayak racks yesterday. The installation was simple and the mounting of the kayaks into the racks was very easy. The ONLY complaint that I have about these units was the mounting screws; cheap steel with small pattern Philips heads, they stripped very easy. Instead I used my own 3 1/2" wood screws.
Will be installed this summer on a pier. Not sure how it will hold up in a saltwater environment but we'll see.
Shipping took quite some time but that was due to a lack of inventory on the manufacturer's part. Etrailer was excellent on providing regular updates on the estimated shipping date as well as suggesting alternate products in case I couldn't wait. They shipped it as soon as possible and didn't charge for the product until it was shipped.
Exceptional customer service.
i love the racks, they worked extremely well for what we wanted. we actually mounted them on a trailer. the straps work really well. the only problem we had is one of the screws that holds the strap on fell out. but other than that, they work well.
Excellent wall racks for our 10 ft. 51 lb. kayaks. Takes some time to get them aligned and installed on the studs but once completed they are fine. Like that they swing flat to the wall when not holding the kayaks. The only negative is that the factory sup[plied screrws are worse than awful - - even with pre-drilled holes as suggested and using a power drill driver the heads stripped almost immediately. So, a quick trip to the local True Value and $7.45 invested for "real" stainless steel screws and done!!
These kayak racks are fantastic. I bought four sets and mounted them inside an enclosed trailer to haul my four boats in. They handle all the jostling around being on the road very well. I highly recommend them. If you are putting them on your wall in the garage, they'll likely last forever.
I bought this for my bf to mount my kayak to the wall of our trailer. It is very packed with our hobby toys so this worked great to easily mount out of the of other objects. Great purchase and great price!

I agree with the screws being extremely cheap. I stripped out 3 out of 4 going into the stud. I went and bought different screw and it worked perfectly.
