Updated 10/02/2025 | Published 09/30/2025

Question:

On the Curt 7 pin tester, do you need a brake controller installed to check all the functions? No controller installed yet 1not getting BK confirmation when pressing brake pedal. when testing L turn signal, light blinks..pres brake pedal, RT light steady on. testing right signal w/brakes depressed, LT light steady on. Thank you PS, controller and tester came from etrailer

Hey Stephen, yes you would need a brake controller installed in order for the Curt 7-way tester part # C73NR to be able to test the brake output circuit. There won't be voltage on that circuit until one is installed and activated.

Thanks, Jameson.... that makes sense! Just purchased a new Frontier a week ago and my concern/reason for testing was that Frontier pickups had some issues with brake wiring in the past. Installed my Prodigy P2 today on my new Frontier ... everything works as it should. Thanks for your reply. Steve

@JamesonC , I like it a lot...had it for 15 years and still works like day one !...It does everything I need... One of your crew suggested it back in 2010.

@Stephen Yeah there's a reason people STILL call the P2 the best brake controller. It works really well and is super reliable.
