An example of sag on a vehicle's rear axle under a heavy load

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or you're towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's side or passenger's side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer, and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi), because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

I was towing my 32 ft travel trailer using standard WdH and sway bar with my f150 and before installing Timbrens, my truck was all over the place forcing me to grip the wheel (white knuckle) and stress out. After installing Timbrens, the rear of the truck feels planted while towing and I can literally tow now with one finger where before, I would have to give my steering wheel the death grip. Added bonus is that I can carry heavier loads in my bed if needed without squat. I can also pull my 32ft Trailer to the dump at State parks without WdH (saves bit of time) while driving slowly. I love the daily drivability and Ecoboost power of my f150 and now it's a towing machine! I'm a happy Timbren customer, as I didn't want to trade for a 250 and now I don't have to.

Item: TFR1502D: 2 wheel drive Ford F-150
I
haven't used my truck to pull our camper yet ... but soon, weather permitting.
The directions for installing this item on are terrible ... I had to make 3 calls to customer service on how to install and place the tabbed mounting bracket to the frame of my truck ... no one I talked to really knew. I see the picture as they are different, but wanted to be sure if I had done my install correctly.
I recommend the video on U-Tube ... it has good information and the video will walk you thru the install. Please update the video on this product and include specifically how to assemble and place the brackets to the frame of your vehicle.

Thank You

Excellent product. Easy installation.

One year of ownership and I am still just as happy as day one. The best compliment I can give for this product is that I notice no difference without the trailer being hooked up - other companies suspension add on's would still be active making for a harsh ride or a lighter wallet if you want better ride quality. But the Timbren bumpers are not effecting my suspension when empty and have been a VERY cost effective solution for my needs - thanks etrailer for the great customer service with all the products recommended by your thoughtful staff.
Once my trailer is hooked up to my Gen-y hitch there is very little sag and a good portion of the suspension travel is left to absorb any bumps and potholes the Gen-y doesn't take care of. 10 thumbs up

As always, shipment was super-fast! Product installed easily and works as expected. I pull a 5th wheel with my F-150 w/ the " ECO-BOOST " engine. Made a huge difference in handling.

Timbrens were very easy to install on my F150. Has made towing my travel trailer much better. I would recommend them to anyone towing a heavy load.

2006 FordF-150

After reading all the great reviews about how great this company is and how this product will level my truck with a heavy load, I ordered. I installed the product and the ride was an unbearably jarring. I emailed customer service with my concerns and let them know that I thought it would be fair to contact them prior to writing a review to try to come up with a solution. Wayne called me back and as we discussed the issues, it came down to him identifying four things that I consider non-solutions. 1. I cannot return the product. 2. He let me know that if I had more weight in my truck the ride would probably be better. 3. I could sell them on Craigslist. 4. I could add a set of air-bags.
Airbags? These were suppose to be better than airbags. What a waste of money.

by:

Got in the mail next day offer ordering. Put on the truck, in about 20 minutes. Took truck for a drive and Just what I was expecting. Can't wait to pull the travel trailer next and see how that goes.

Helped out on load a great deal! Under a load the truck is much more solid ride.

I installed these on a 2014 F150 to cure the sag when attaching my 14' cargo trailer. They installed easily and after using them for a year I can say they've leveled things right out. I also can't detect any noticeable degrading of the ride when not towing. I'm very pleased.

2013 FordF-150

This system worked out really well on my 2013 F150 XLT Crew Cab v8. I needed to remove the top rubber spacer, but afterwards, I have plenty of suspension travel for normal driving and good suspension control when towing. This reduced the "dolphining" I experienced while towing. Highly recommend this system for towing heavy loads. Also, recommend the Superchips programmer (towing tune) to round out your towing package.

Good product

I have been very satisfied that I choose this over air bags. With the max load tounge weight from a fifth wheel rv in the bed, the truck and rv are perfectly level. Happy camper!

2009FordF-150

Ordered Sunday, received Friday. Love the service of etrailer and will continue to use them. Put the timbrens on my heavy 1/2T F150 and they went on like a charm. Used the spacer and got 1" of clearance, well within the requirements. This should take the sag out of towing my fifth wheel trailer.

by:
2010 FordF-150

I purchased the Timbren rear kit for my 2010 F150. I occasionally haul two motorcycles and wanted to get rid of the sag. The install could not be any easier. My truck required the extra bushings that are included, this gave me the recommended space between the axle and the bushing. Perfect fit, no issues. Great service from etrailer, ordered on sunday and package arrived Wednesday using the free shipping option.

by:
2009FordF-150

I purchased these to help with the squat on my F-150 when towing my 32--foot travel trailer. I need to tweak the setup on my WDH, but otherwise am very pleased. Without the trailer, you don't even know they're there.

2008 FordF-150

Install on a 2008 Ford F150 was very easy. I removed the old bump stops and installed these right into the existing hole. Perfect fit. Heavy duty. Worth the money.

by:

These stop the sag/bounce back significantly. You can definitely feel that these are working when you hit a bump in the road. Helps stop the "floating" feeling

by:

Rose listened to my story and helped me choose the correct product. She was wonderful to work with . She had good knowledge of the products.

I will work with etrailer and Rose again in the future.

  • Do Air Lift AirCell Custom Helper Springs Have a Load Rating
There is no load rating attached to the Air Lift AirCell Custom Helper Springs Kit AL52218. The note in the linked instructions says that they will not alter the GVWR or payload of your 2013 Ford F-150, so as long as you keep the capacity under those weight limits the kit will provide your F-150 with support from heavy loads. In regards to your second question you would still need to use a weight distribution hitch; the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System # TFR1502D help level your...

  • Can Timbren Helper Springs be Installed on a 2007 Ford F-150 with a Slight Lift
Yes you can still use Timbren helper springs # TFR1502D on your lifted 2007 Ford F-150. The springs only attach at the top to the truck frame. There are 1 inch spacers included with the kit which you will likely need to use with the lift on your truck. Without the spacers the truck would have to sag more before the springs made contact with the axle.

  • What is the Towing Capacity of a 2007 Ford F-150
The maximum towing capacity of your 2007 Ford F-150 will vary depending on cab, wheel size, drive type, engine size, and rear axle ratio. Therefore, the only true way to tell what your trucks towing capacity is would be to find both the Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) and the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW). These figures can be located on the information tag inside the drivers door jamb. If you subtract the GVW from the GCWR, that will give you the maximum gross trailer weight (GTW) you...

  • Will the Timbren Suspension for the Ford F150 Affect Unloaded Ride Height
When unloaded you will not see a height increase with the Timbren System # TFR1502D installed on your 2010 Ford F150. You should find that when loaded with either cargo in the bed of your truck or towing a trailer that the rear does not sag as much. Bottom line, when unloaded you will not see difference in ride quality or height with the # TFR1502D installed in your vehicle.

  • Would Using an Air Bag System to Raise a Vehicle 1-1/2 Inches Cause Harsh Ride Quality
If you want to raise the ride height of a vehicle by 1-1/2 inches you would have to use quite a bit of air pressure. Enough pressure to cause a much noticeable rougher ride. The best overall solution I could recommend for you would be to contact the lowering kit manufacturer you used and see why your truck dropped more than the kit was advertised for. You may have done something wrong or they sent you the wrong parts as typically lowering kits are not off by almost 1-1/2 inches.

  • What is Recommended Distance between Timbren Spring and Axle
You will want to have the rubber spring of the Timbren part # TFR1502D sit close to the axle but not touching it when unloaded. There isn't an exact dimension for what will work best as people have different preferences and some vehicle suspensions move more in general. Timbren likes to recommend 1 inch between the axle and the Timbren when the truck is unloaded. We have found that this works the best.

  • Timbren Suspension Enhancement Recommendation for a 2010 Ford F-150 Towing a Horse Trailer
The Timbren suspension enhancement system # TFRTT1502D is designed for service vehicles (fire trucks, ambulances, utility trucks) but not regular trucks. For your 2010 Ford F-150 you would want to go with the 6K system # TFR1502D that you referenced. It will work well with your horse trailer. Even though the trailer is more than the 6K capacity of the system, the tongue weight of the trailer that pulls the truck down is much less so the system will be very effective. Since you said the rear of your F-150 sags when the dirt bikes are in the bed I recommend using a Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System, part # TFR1502D if you have a 2-wheel drive truck with stock height. This system does not affect the ride of your truck when you are not towing but as more weight is added helps to cushion the load and provide additional support. Even with the bed on your 2014 Ford F-150 loaded and towing a 7,000 pound trailer the weight on the actual rear axle of the truck is still well under 6,000 pounds so going with the 6K rated Timbren springs, # TFR1504D for 4x4s or # TFR1502D for 2-wheel drive models will work well. The 7K kits are designed for severe service vehicles only.

  • Will Exceeding Truck's Towing or Payload Capacity Damage Suspension Components
Failed suspension components like what you described on the F-150 you perform work on can certainly be from exceeding its payload or tongue weight capacity from an overloaded bed and trailer. It's hard to say for certain that this is the culprit as I'm not sure exactly how heavy a trailer he tows with the truck but the fact that it keeps happening (and way sooner than it should) after repairs indicates that something is indeed being overloaded.
