Firestone Ride-Rite Air Spring Basics

Firestone Ride-Rite springs are designed to increase safety and reduce the strain on your vehicle when you are hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer. The springs partner with your existing rear suspension system to help keep your vehicle level, maintain even load distribution and increase stability. Hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer can make the rear of your vehicle sag and the front end rise. This puts more strain on your rear axle and reduces contact between your front tires and the road, causing problems with braking, steering control and traction. By adding air springs to your rear suspension, you can help to level your vehicle and improve braking and handling. The air springs also help to level your headlight beams and reduce wear on your tires.

Firestone Ride-Rite air spring airline installation

Adjustable Air Pressure

The air pressure in your Ride-Rite springs can be adjusted manually, side to side, to compensate for off-center loads. A centered load improves the stability of your vehicle by reducing body roll. The air springs will also help to absorb road shock and to soften contact between your axle and frame. This prevents bottoming out, thus improving ride comfort. Route the air line tubing for the springs to your vehicle's bumper to provide easy access to the manual inflation valves.

Firestone Ride-Ride air spring components

Air Spring Construction

Firestone's double-convoluted Ride-Rite air springs are designed to give you maximum load support and enhance the performance and ride comfort of your vehicle. The rubber springs provide cushioning between your suspension components and operate at up to 100 psi. The springs have four layers of reinforced rubber to ensure durability and enhance load support. A braided wire girdle creates the double-convoluted shape of each air spring, increasing the burst pressure of the spring. The rubber springs are attached to corrosion-resistant metal end plates with a time-proven, rolled crimp seal that keeps the bags securely anchored.

Each Ride-Rite kit includes custom-fit brackets that connect to your axle and frame. The brackets provide the mounting points for the air springs. Drilling may be required for some applications.

Review from a similar Ride-Rite in Vehicle Suspension

So the bags were only on the truck for a few months before the brackets started bending. Had to take them off a couple of times to straighten out the metal but they didn’t stay true for very long. When the system was new it worked beautifully, improved the handling of the vehicle and got better gas mileage. Ran them at about 50 to 70 lbs and they never leaked.tolerances on my vehicle are tight(like most new trucks) so even a slight bend in the brackets caused wheel contact, not a good scenario. Bags were installed on a 2016 nissan titan xd 4x4 to haul a cab over camper that has a dry weight of 1700lbs.

Generally, bending brackets happen when the air springs have too little air to support whatever load. When this happens, the rubber bellows becomes a rubber bumper and hammers on the brackets until something bends or breaks.

Great setup! Bought the helper springs to help truck sag when towing and having camping gear in the bed of the truck. The before and after shows the trailer connected with 600 pounds of tongue and 300 pound tent in the bed of the truck

Great product and easy to install. etrailer always provides excellent service with quick shipping. This Firestone kit was put on 2012 Dodge Ram 2500 diesel mega cab. Everything comes in the kit you need and offers clear instructions to install. One side note is to make sure you dry fit the airbag in the brackets so that the final install goes easier for you. This product allows easy load leveling when trailering or hauling heavy loads and also works with bolt in gooseneck hitches.

2015 Ram 3500 CCLB, Kit was received in a timely manner. Good packaging, no damaged components. I read the directions several times so I had a clear path to install. Directions are very specific without confusion. Install: Took me about 3hrs. Could have been quicker, but I wasn't racing anybody. Very methodical about how everything was installed. Everything went just as the directions detailed. 1 missing note: no comment about the E Brake cable interfering with the L upper bracket. Cable settled into a reasonable position to prevent damage to the cable housing. Air fittings on top of bags: can be difficult to tighten due to the limited space. Use caution to prevent damage to the fittings. I did use a compression "T" to combine both lines to 1 fill fitting. No really good place to put the fittings at the back of the truck. The supplied mount doesn't work with the round hitch on my Ram. I routed the air line up to the fuel door. Clean install and less chance of damage. A suggestion for the manufacturer: Don't apply thread lock to the fasteners or air fittings. The thread lock on the upper bracket bolts created such an interference that I couldn't secure the bolt without breaking 1 of my 6mm Hex bit sockets. Also, thread sealant on the air fittings makes it extremely difficult to turn the fittings in the tight space. It would be better to supply a small tube of liquid thread lock and a small tube of liquid thread sealant in the kit.

How many stars (1-5, 5 being Excellent) would you give the product: 4 ½ on both items Product Review: Installed the Firestone Air Command Compressor system and Firestone Ride-Rite helper rear Air Bags on my 2020 F-250 Super Duty (Lariat Sport Edition). The install was pretty straight forward and took 5 hours for all components. Put my truck up on the rack and removed factory jounce bumper and installed the upper bracket of the air spring with no issues. Installed bottom bracket and bag again with no issues (Pic drivers side bag). Had to make a slight cut out to the bottom axle strap bracket on the passenger side to account for brake line (Pic passenger side axle bracket). Ran all airlines (had to remove spare tire for easy access) to the passengers side frame. Mounted the compressor and control unit to the passenger side frame (Pic Compressor mount) Covered all airlines with 1/2" wire loom to protect the lines. Checked all connections and no leaks. Downloaded Air Command App and tested the system. I have not had any issues pulling my 16,000 lb 5th wheel over the past year.(Pic Truck camper) Overall I am very impressed with the system I installed and the great customer service I received when ordering the product!

First impression are the parts look and feel top quality, excellent packaging and delivered on time. The install was somewhat difficult on the first side, trying to get the blind nuts inside the frame lined up to start threading the bolts in, but second side took 1/4 as long. Aired up the bags to about 15% to take a test drive, very impressed with the solid smooth feel of the rear suspension along with a quiet ride. Ready to tow.

Review from a similar Ride-Rite in Vehicle Suspension

Not very happy with the purchase. Packaging was sub par, 28 lbs of steel and airbags dumped into a 12x12x12 box, no packaging material. Airbags had caps over the air inlet, but both caps came off in shipping. Aluminum inserts were MISSING the threaded holes for the alignment studs. Had to drill and tap the 4 inserts (see pictures), thankfully I had a 10-24 tap on hand. Instructions are not clear in terms of 3/8” washer usage, the list of parts at the top of each page shows the incorrect amount of washers vs what is shown in the instructions, as a result not enough washers for the install, one again I had some at home thankfully, finally, the 3/8” bolts are not long enough to go through the lower brackets and provide enough thread engagement for the nylock nuts. There is no bolt stick out after assembly. The air line is very flimsy and is easy to link. Overall the only thing I liked about the kit was the air fill line bracket and the lower clamps that wrap the axle. I would likely go with the airlift product if I could do it again. Hopefully it functions well. Will find out when I put 4000 lbs over the axle.

Thank you for your review. The instructions say the frame nuts may not have the second hole. You can tape them in place while you secure the upper bracket. The all thread is a temporary use during the installation of the upper bracket and is then removed.

Installed easily, and used them to pull a heavy 24’ trailer across the country with a half ton pickup. The only thing I’d like to see is a manual leveling system with gauges and a compressor on board. I use a hand pump specifically for motorcycle air suspension to make the fine adjustments required to set the pressure. Works well. They did their job perfectly.

After a year, they are a great aid in hauling a d towing with my half ton. No more sagging rear suspension when loaded. Yes, the rear ride firmed up a little even with only five pounds pressure. That’s a small trade-off.

Review from a similar Ride-Rite in Vehicle Suspension

Product appears to be of very high quality and 1 week after installing, it appears to be working as expected. I was able to install the product myself, but only with the help of a neighbor. The ordering process was great, and thank goodness for the video that was linked to the etrailer site. I wish a few things were better: 1. The optional T connector that combines the two air valves should have been more prominently advertised, because I certainly would have gotten it. As is, it's a bit of a pain to try and inflate both sides separately. 2. Firestone should have labeled ALL the parts that were specific to right or left side of the vehicle. Even with the video, it was frustrating to try and decifer which parts went on which side, and the picture orientation in the installation manual was zero help. 3. There HAS to be a better way to attach the frame bolts. Those bendable tabs and long handles and trying to line them up with the upper bracket were ridiculously tedious and time-consuming, and very nearly resulted in me returning the product. Other than that, I am very happy with the product and the competitive price.

Continues to perform as expected. Took me several trips with the trailer to arrive at an optimal inflation for highway speeds, so the manufacturer might be advised to provide some guidance.

I have owned these for about a year now and they have performed great. I installed them to accommodate the weight of some storage and gear I added in the truck bed. They have performed great and have fixed the issue I had with my headlights aiming to the sky with a load in the back. Adjusting the pressure is not difficult, but I would strongly recommend getting the t-fitting for the air lines to make it a little less tedious. Installation was pretty easy as long as you pay close attention to the orientation of the brackets. Overall, I am very satisfied with these and wish I had gotten them sooner.

Still going strong 2 years later!

I mounted the Firestone airbag system on my 2008 Toyota Tacoma pickup. It was not as easy as the video makes it look (especially on the drivers side) but, it it turned out great. I mounted the compressor in the compartment behind the passenger seat behind the driver (see pic). I mounted the gauge and switch in the compartment between the driver and passenger (see pic). The airbag pictures are when they were holding 70 lbs pressure checking for air leaks. The first picture of the pickup is with 5 lbs air pressure in the bags and the second is with 50 lbs air pressure in the bags. When driving with 5 lbs in the bags it has the normal smooth ride and does a good job at 30 lbs of keeping the back end from sagging when I pull my boat.

Review from a similar Ride-Rite in Vehicle Suspension

Big selling point for this system was “no drill”. Said so on the box. Most definitely HAD to drill… so don’t bank on that truth. Kit works well. Drove 3000+ miles with trailer for two weeks immediately following install. Work AMAZING at stabilizing the Van and improving performance. Helped tremendously. I would highly recommend. Took me about 5 hours to install … removing the old joints bumpers was the hardest part. I have had one of the air fittings fail on me now twice. Have to take stem tool and remover then re-install that stem valve. Seems to solve problem. I am a little worried about the long term performance of that stem. Not sure how to remover the press for hose to replace the part. We will see. Have now driven close to 5k miles on them in 3 1/2 weeks.

I have contacted Firestone about your situation and they had suggested that it sounds like you are talking about the inflation valves. There certainly is no problem removing and reinstalling the valve core. Is the same as on any tire. Pressing the core should release pressure in the air spring.

Outstanding product!!! Well made and easy to install on my 2010 Tundra TRD. Just basic tools needed so anyone can do it!! Take your time and it is a fun 2 hour project. Made towing my trailer so much nicer. Level ride with comfort and good maneuverability. Think I am going to add these to my other GMC work truck as well.

Outstanding! Towing for a year now and all is fantastic. Level ride makes towing more safe and pleasant!

Package came In a timely manner and was packaged very nicely. Just installed tonight on my 2002GMC 2500 HD 8.1L. install took about two hours. Hardest part was getting the old bump stops off the truck. Instructions were easy to follow and understand also included torque specs for each nut. After install was done I aired to 15psi and drove the truck and was not disappointed. Came back to the house and hooked my 8000lb rated trailer up with 7000lb skid loader on it and 30psi in bags the truck was level. Pulled it around town and on highway and drove a pulled great. This is a great product and glad I purchased. I will do a follow up after the winter and let everyone know how they Do in winter w 2500lbs of salt in the bed all winter.

I purchased a set of air bags for my 2022 Silverado pick up, firestone bags. When I installed them the would not fit, I called you and was told I needed to purchase a shim kit. I installed them the quality of the kit is marginal. The ride is extremely harsh no matter what air pressure I put in it. After three phone calls I was told to call Firestone. I have 3 times and cannot get them to answer the phone. I have been in the automotive repair as a tech. for 35 years so I know a little about vehicles. I am very disappointed in the quality and customer service of Firestone unfortunately it reflects on your company if you wish to rectify this situation please feel free to call . Thanks

I have reached out to the manufacturer and have asked them to contact you directly.

Prompt delivery with good communication as regards order. Installation was straightforward as per instructions although I didn't use the included 3/8" x 5 1/2" carriage bolts for the lower bracket. Purchased 3/8 " x 3" Grade 8 bolts which did not require shortening and were easier to work with for clearance of brake line &etc. Air lines and connections worked great and No Leaks! Currently running 10# pressure but have not tested with a heavy load as of yet. Thanks

Air bags have performed as designed with no issues for a year. Additional weight handled well and general ride and handling improved. Upgraded to E Series tires and Bilstein shocks and truck works well on and offroad.

Review from a similar Ride-Rite in Vehicle Suspension

The ride improvement is great and the additional bracket PN F5722 was not needed for my 2016 F 250 CCSB diesel because the module in question is behind where the airbag mounts on the frame, see attached pics. I did exhaustive research on whether or not the bracket was needed and could not find a definitive answer. When the box arrived one of the saddle brackets was protruding through the side of the box and the box looked like it had been opened and re-taped. I opened the box and found that the hardware bag was opened so I took inventory of everything and it all appeared to be there going by the list in the installation manual. I have the factory puck system so I did have to notch a small section of the hitch frame to allow for the passenger side upper mount bolt to pass through. When it came time to secure the bags to the upper mounts, the supplied nuts were the wrong thread pitch, I ended up having to source two nuts locally to continue with the installation. Overall the installation was not bad, I removed the spare tire and backed up on a pair of ramps. I have not pulled my 5th wheel since I installed the airbags, I will update the review once I do.

Installed as described in the Video on a f-150 2019 Lariat, max tow package 4x4. I have not loaded up the bed and towed yet so they are set to 5 psi and are riding fine. I have used the ride rites on other trucks and very happy with them. Now note you need to monitor them when not loaded as the should be kept at 5 psi unloaded. I also bought the wheel liners and mud flaps. Wheel liners needed to be cut so they would not run on the air bags.

Great, I did tow with my TT, truck was almost at max GVWR. Airbags were set to about 50psi to return factory rate. The ride was very good and controlled

Review from a similar Ride-Rite in Vehicle Suspension

Before I received the kit, I contacted Firestone to make sure I understood any issues with installing this on a Transit. I was told to follow the instructions and if needed to drill any holes. The kit arrived. Many metal parts are thrown loosely without protection into a box. Instructions have errors. Kit says no drill but instructions say some vehicles have to be drilled. If you need to drill prepare for a nightmare. It took me 2 hours to drill the proper holes. The holes should be located lower to prevent damage to vehicle from drill chuck and to allow you to drill a straight hole. Then the washers need to be modified as the hole is too close to a perpendicular surface that prevents the washer from going over the bolt. Bolt that attaches middle bracket rubs on leaf spring. It is quite obvious that no one from Firestone ever used these directions to install this kit on a Transit. There are special tools that are required that are not provided and not identified. For example a drill extension that allows 1/2” bits would prevent damage to the vehicle when drilling. Also a 5/8” bit is required to drill a hole that the instructions state should be 1/2”. The problem is the bolt diameter is 5/8”. It has 1/2” threads but it is a shoulder bolt and the shoulder is larger than the threaded area.

I contacted the manufacturer about this and they are interested to speak to you. I will email you their information.

The Firestone kit for great. Installed in about a hour without issues. I contacted e trailer to confirm fitment on my 2006 F350 4x4 CCLB diesel dually due to clearance between the jounce mount and stabilizer bar bracket. They contacted Firestone and assured me it would fit. Very nice quality and easy installation. The kit does come with a bracket for the air fittings to be mounted off a hitch so no need to purchase separately.

The best suspension enhancement for your 2018 Ford E-450 is going to be air helper springs part # F22ZR. Air springs ride a lot smoother than a rubber timbren like part # TFER35092LB. Having the ability to adjust the air can make your ride smoother depending on the load you have at any time. I also recommend picking up part # F2590 for your air bags. The compressor is a straight forward install and makes life a lot easier when airing up. You can change the air on fly to improve your ride...

  • Recommended Rear Air Helper Springs For a 2011 Fleetwood Jamboree 31N Sport Motorhome
I recommend the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs # F22ZR for your 20111 Fleetwood Jamboree Sport 31N Motorhome. These air bags have a rated capacity of 5,000lbs to help reduce the sag you are experiencing. By adding the additional support you will experience better handling as well. I recommend using the Air Lift WirelessAIR Compressor System # AL74000EZ to control the air pressure. First the Air Lift will allow you to adjust the air pressure in each bag individually which will...

  • Best Way to Improve Ride Quality on 2018 Ford E-450 Motorhome
The ride in your 2018 Ford E-450 will be improved to a certain degree by the SumoSprings - Front Axle # SSF-106-40 and Rear Axle # SSR-130-47, but they will not give you a ride that is as cushioned as air bags. So for the main purpose of improving a ride that is stiff and jarring, I do recommend air bags over SumoSprings, with the best option being the Firestone Ride-Rite. The correct fit for these air bags on your '18 E-450 are the following: - Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs #...

  • Suspension Enhancement Recommendation for 2018 Forest River Forester Motorhome E-450
Adjustable suspension enhancement would be your best option. This will give you the ability to add the exact amount of additional support you'd need to prevent bottoming out while also not making the suspension overly stiff. So for that you'd want the Firestone Ride Rite kit part # F22ZR which is a confirmed fit for your 2018 Forest River class C 32 ft. on a Ford E-450 chassis. For a compressor kit to make inflating and maintaining the air bags easy we have the Firestone kit part #...

  • Modifications To Improve Suspension and Handling of 2018 Class C Motorhome on Ford E450 Chassis
How to proceed next would depend greatly on the reason why you're displeased with the handling/ride of your Motorhome. Assuming that the air helper springs like # F22ZR went a long way to resolve the ride issues you were having, the next step would be to resolve the handling issues. The best solution here would depend on the nature of your complaint regarding the motorhome's handling. If the issue is with the steering being vague and not returning to center from turns, or the steering...
