Firestone Ride-Rite Air Spring Basics

Firestone Ride-Rite springs are designed to increase safety and reduce the strain on your when you are hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer. The springs partner with your existing rear suspension system to help keep your level, maintain even load distribution and increase stability. Hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer can make the rear of your sag and the front end rise. This puts more strain on your rear axle and reduces contact between your front tires and the road, causing problems with braking, steering control and traction. By adding air springs to your rear suspension, you can help to level your and improve braking and handling. The air springs also help to level your headlight beams and reduce wear on your tires.

Adjustable Air Pressure

The air pressure in your Ride-Rite springs can be adjusted manually, side to side, to compensate for off-center loads. A centered load improves the stability of your by reducing body roll. The air springs will also help to absorb road shock and to soften contact between your axle and frame. This prevents bottoming out, thus improving ride comfort. Route the air line tubing for the springs to your 's bumper to provide easy access to the manual inflation valves.

Air Spring Construction

Firestone's double-convoluted Ride-Rite air springs are designed to give you maximum load support and enhance the performance and ride comfort of your . The rubber springs provide cushioning between your suspension components and operate at up to 100 psi. The springs have four layers of reinforced rubber to ensure durability and enhance load support. A braided wire girdle creates the double-convoluted shape of each air spring, increasing the burst pressure of the spring. The rubber springs are attached to corrosion-resistant metal end plates with a time-proven, rolled crimp seal that keeps the bags securely anchored.

Video Transcript for Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs Installation - 2006 Dodge Ram Pickup

All right today on a 2006 Dodge Ram Pickup 2500 Series Megacab, were going to install part number F2299. This is the Firestone Ride Rite Air Helper Springs. Were going to begin by showing you how the air springs perform on our truck. Now our original ride height is about 42 1/4 inches. Okay, let's go ahead and put the weight in the back of our truck. It should be around 1500 pounds.

Okay with our weight in there it is about 39 3/4. Well demonstrate how our truck handles on our bump and slalom course without the air helper springs installed. With the air springs installed, we'll go ahead and put the air pressure back down the air bags roughly about 5 to 10 pounds. Then we'll go ahead and put our load back into and see how much air pressure it takes to raise it back up to level. We added air to our springs, I brought them back to our original ride height, its about 42 1/2 inches. So we'll go ahead and check how much pressure.

In this case its about 42 pounds. And we'll go ahead and take it for a quick test ride once again with the air bags in place. Notice how much better our truck handles in the turns and bumps on our course. Okay let's get started on our install. First we need to go ahead and remove the jounce stop at the bottom of the frame there directly above the axle. We're going to do our driver's side first and then do our passenger's side.

Now we also used some penetrating fluid on our bolts too, to help remove them. All right next we need to do a test fit. Now these specialized ends here are designed to fit in between the U bolts of the springs. Now depending on the truck, it'll use one side or the other. Well do a test fit to see which one fits inside the U bolt side.

On a 4 wheel drive well use the wider side. We'll go ahead and mark our bracket and know which side will go to the spring. All right next we'll go ahead and do some preassembly on our air springs. We know this is the spring side and then our air spring is going to fit on this bolt hole here. We'll use this short bolt here. We'll run it through and we'll thread that into the bottom of our air spring. Okay. We'll just do that finger tight for now and take up the space. Next on top of the spring we'll go ahead and take the cap off and install our air fitting. Our air line will push right into this. Well snug this down with a 9/16 wrench. Then you want to tighten it down to make sure that the sealant on the threads is engaged all the way around. Now you dont have to crush it but make sure it's all seated all the way around it. Now we'll go and do some preassembly for our upper bracket. You notice the mark for 2 wheel drive and 4 wheel drive. Our truck is a 4 wheel drive so this bracket here will fit in between. We'll go ahead and install our hardware to secure it. Just a bolt and lock nuts. We'll go and tighten them down for good. All right let's go ahead and install our upper bracket. We'll use this bolt right here that will go through this part of the bracket, that will fit into your preexisting threads on the frame. All right we'll go ahead and use a 6mm Allen tool to go ahead and tighten down the bolts. All right now we go ahead and put our air spring into place. We'll also put this clamp in this slot right here as well. Make sure it fits in between the U bolts. Make sure we can put our clamp in here. Now let's go ahead and put the top part into one of these two holes here on the upper bracket. There's also a little pin on top of the air spring inaudible 06:50 match it to one of these holes on the bottom of the bracket. So it's a good idea to try each one to see which fits best. All right let's go ahead and secure our air spring to the top bracket. We'll go ahead and use this large star washer over the fitting and then the large nut. Let's go ahead and tighten down this nut on the top. Now we're going to use a deep well 1 1/8 inch socket. We'll go ahead and use a crescent wrench to tighten down our nut. Let's go ahead and push up on the bottom and tighten down this bolt. We'll go ahead and secure the bottom half of our bracket to the bottom axle of this clamp. Okay when we tighten down our clamp we want to be even on both sides. Okay, we can go ahead and start adding our air line tubing to our air spring. We'll go ahead and cut it using a tubing cutter. This is part number F9009. And one other thing before we put our air line tubing into our air spring, is that we'll put this black material, it's also like a heat shield for the air line tubing. Okay our airline tubing will simply be a press fit in to the fitting. So you push it a little bit and it'll stop. Then push it more and it'll catch. Give it a quick tug back up and It'll lock back into place. Now we'll go ahead and route our air line to the license plate on our bumper. There may be a little bit extra, we'll go ahead and cut it off. Okay next we'll go ahead and install our air line fitting for our air springs. Now this is again personal preference. In this case we're going to go on both sides of the license plate. What we did is we just lined up with this opening here and then measured from the top of the plastic down, about 2 inches. So we'll go and drill a 5/16 hole, we'll have a layer of plastic to go through and then metal. Okay. Same as before, with a fresh end our on air line tubing we'll go ahead and push into the air fitting. Now we left enough in there where we can actually put a loop in there in case we ever take it apart and redo it. Before we put it through the hole we'll go ahead and put one of the stainless steel washers on it and then through the hole. Another flat washer and then the nut. A half inch socket will tighten that down. We'll go ahead and put our cap on to protect it for now. All right this is how the heat shield will fit on the truck. We'll put this in place and you rotate it as needed to fit this between the exhaust and the air spring. And then our upper bracket will clamp in place. Okay everything is installed. Let's go ahead and supply air to them and see how they work. First the driver's side. Now once we have air in them, it would be a good idea to go ahead and spray them down with some soapy to double check for any leaks. All right and with that, that will finish it for our install of part number of F2299 the Firestone Ride Rite Air Helper Springs on our 2006 Dodge Ram Pickup 2500 Series Megacab. .

I purchased a Ride Rite kit for my 06 Ram. This is my third kit for my trucks. I haul scrap and routinely gross 30K. I need quality running gear. etrailer provided what I needed at a great price and fast. I also needed a replacement air bag for my 2012 Ram. I found it cheaper from a competitor. Rather than order it from that vendor I gave etrailer the info and they matched the price plus a little extra. This is where I shop, and so should you. 551930

Last year I bought a f2299 air bag kit. With no mechanical skill and some common sense I had these installed (3hrs max.) into a Dodge 3500 to pull our 41ft 5th wheel camper. Took it to Fl. from Ks and forgot I had it along. Just bought my second pair, f2071 for my old '98. AWESOME product! holds air indefinitely. 241426

The product engineering is great, everything fit perfectly! It was easy to install especially after watching the video on etrailer.com, I hardly had to look at the printed instructions. So far the noise level when unloaded has decreased significantly, and when loaded with a 10k fifth wheel, it has smoothed out the constant push/pull bounce I usually got from the stiff springs. I should note that I have a 2004 Dodge 3500 and I took my factory overload springs off and used this kit to replace it. The factory overload springs would "slap" on the upper supports at times and that is the noise that was eliminated. Now the extra load is on the air bags and that has smoothed out the loaded ride. I only have to run 10 lbs. of air level the truck with the 1300 lb. pin weight. etrailer.com is a good company to purchase this product from, while I didn't need to call customer support, the shipping was super quick even when I ordered on the holiday weekend! Thanks! 150626

I have purchased several items from etrailer and always impressed with their accuracy and speed of delivery. They have high shipping costs to Alaska so have not been able to use them except when in the lower 48. Installed on a 1-ton Dodge dually used to either carry a 4600 lb truck camper, pull a 11000 pound fifth wheel or tow a 10000 trailer. The truck camper really sat the truck on the axle and the recently installed Timbrens made matters even worse. When I hit a dip or bump it sounded like there were no springs what so ever. Installed the air springs and now I get a much improved ride and have not bottomed out to date. I installed the air springs in Oregon and drove to Homer Alaska over some pretty rough roads. Great ride!!! 88865

I still have the highest opinion of the air shocks! Been many miles and always loaded. Not one time have I had to add air and perform the same as they did when I first put them on. These shocks really tamed the load. Would not own a large truck camper without them.

These were installed on a 2012 Dodge 3500 DRW Crew Cab Laramie 4x4 with the 6.7 turbo diesel. I received my air shocks as expected. Very happy with that. Installation was easy and pretty straight forward. I only had two issues with the install. The first was installing both upper brackets after the axle bumpers are removed. This is a metric bolt, 10mm x 1.5p and somehow, I managed to cross thread all four of them. The first two bolts, drivers side, I did get in but the passenger side required the use of a tap and die to fix the threads on the bolt and to chase the threads on the mounting point. The second issue was both air lines leaked where the air line fitting screwed into the top of the air bag. I couldn't tighten them down enough to get them to stop leaking (the loctite that comes on these fittings just wasn't doing the trick) but a little bit of white teflon tape sealed them up tight. Overall, I'm very happy with how easy they were to install. Now, to hook up my 5er and take it for a spin. 237391

These air bags are a must for carrying a load to make your truck handle better. Empty, I run at 5 lbs and only change I notice is the truck rides about a inch higher. The install went real smooth with the directions easy to under stand. Shipping was very fast and communication to let me know how and when the package was to arrive. 104545

Installation was simple. Product performance is excellent. Instructions and video es very simple to follow. I also ordered the air line "T" so I only have one line at the back to air up the bags. Put 45#s of air in the bags then loaded a round bale of hay on, see pics 229764

The etrailer team earns 5 stars again! The product is worth 5 stars (so far, just installed it so time will tell.) The install was easy and product seamed very sturdy. However, the 2003 Ram V10 install procedure should be the same as the diesel procedures. The instructions say "gas this way, diesel this way." The V10 leaf spring U-Bolt is the same width as the diesel. When I went to install it with gas instructions, V10 is a gas, the product was too small and the diesel way fit perfectly. So, just FYI. (The V10 was a direct drop in for the diesel by the way, so it gets same engine mounts and all other diesel body specs.) 710805

On time shipment in perfect condition as expected with etrailer. The unit installed in 1.5 hours with very basic hand tools. If you have a lift you could do it in under an hour by cutting down on the time crawling in and out from under the truck. I have experimented with it and it works great, needs 65psi to bring my 2011 Ram 2500 Diesel with my 14,000lb 5th wheel hooked up back up to the same fender height as when unloaded. If you watch the etrailer installation video you will only need to briefly reference the instructions during your installation. Hope it lasts for many years!! 664456

Installed in less than two hours. Fairly simple to install. Took some extra time to route the airlines the way I like them to be. I recommend a dry build off the truck prior to tightening anything down. Orientation of the airbags is critical so don’t tighten the bottom bolt going into the base of the airbags until you are certain of airbags orientation. You may not be able to tighten once installed due to brake lines or other hardware depending on model truck. I have a 2500 Ram diesel 4x4. This is in the instructions but my orientation was off just a hair on driver side so I had to remove and get it perfect. Just a minor problem which I solved in 5 minutes. Leak and OPs check good to go. 645080

The springs themselves and most of the other components are different for each truck. • Recommended Air Compressor and Tank Kit for a 2006 Dodge Ram Pickup with Ride-Rite Air Springs
You likely have the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs # F2299 on your 2006 Dodge Ram 4WD but regardless of the air bag kit we definitely have what you are looking for in a compressor tank kit. I recommend going with the Air Command II Xtreme Duty Compressor with Analog Gauge, Air Tank, and 25' Hose # F2549. This is a dual path system which allows you to adjust your air bags individually and comes with a 2-gallon air tank so that you have a ready supply of air when needed. This can...

If that is the case then you will want to use the Replacement Bail Clamp for Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs part # F3292.

To install the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs, part # F2299, on your 2006 Dodge Ram with a lift kit, you will need to use a lift spacer kit. For a 6-inch lift you will need the Firestone Lift Spacer, part # F2375. You will need to check and see the actual lift you got from your lift kit. The # F2375 bracket kit is designed to be used with the Firestone Air Springs and trucks that are lifted 6 inches. You will want to measure the distance between the upper and lower brackets of...

  • Firestone Air Bag Kit Recommendation for 2006 Dodge Ram 1500
You didn't mention a brand of air bag but I would assume Firestone. The air bag sizes between what is recommended for the two trucks you mentioned aren't the same so your best option is to start over with an all new kit on your 2006 Dodge Ram 1500. So for that you'd want the Firestone kit part # F2299. I attached an install video for this as well.

  • Recommended Air Suspension System For 2006 Dodge 1500 Mega Cab
The Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs, part # F2299 are designed to help reduce the strain on your truck suspension when you are carrying heavy loads or towing a trailer. The system is not designed to increase the weight carrying capacity of your truck and is designed to work on a vehicle with a suspension that is in good working order. To be able to control the amount of air you have in your air bags from the comfort of your truck cab I recommend part # F2158. This is a single-path...

It may also very well eliminate the need for them entirely because airbags in my opinion are the best suspension enhancement system on the market but they can still be used together if you wish. The ride however may be a tad bit less comfortable which is why I recommend you...

A 6 inch lift may not increase the distance between the frame and axle by 6 inches. But if it has then you would need 6 inch lift spacers # F2375.
