Video Transcript for Yakima BlockHead Truck Bed Bike Carrier Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Yakima Blockhead single bike truck bed mount, part number Y01117. The Yakima Blockhead is the perfect way to transport your fork mounted bike in your truck bed or on your trailer. It used a quick release 9 millimeter skewer that allows for rapid loading and unloading. Though it only holds one fork mounted bike, you can use as many as your truck bed or trailer can handle by purchasing additional blockheads. It will accommodate bikes with both standard and disc brake systems. It's sleek design with the Yakima logo makes it stand out compared to other fork mounts.

It's constructed of an anodized aluminum with a black finish, so it's going to stand up to the elements. It also features a lifetime warranty. Now that we've gone over the features, I'll go ahead and show you how to get it installed. You can mount this really anywhere in the back of your truck bed, or trailer. You can mount it here at the bulkhead, on top, down in the bed, or on the raised rails there. Some people prefer to mount it in a less permanent way by mounting it through a cargo carrier, something that they can remove, or to a piece of wood in the back of there truck like we're going to do here today.

We just got a two by ten stretched to the width of our truck. Either way you will have to provide your own hardware. I'm going to be using some heavy duty bolts as I'm just going into the wood. Now if we're to be mounting it directly to the truck bed, I would recommend using some bolts and some flange nuts. Now in positioning your mount you want to be aware of where your handlebars are going to sit. That way they don't come in contact with the cab or anything else that you might already have in the way.

Once we have it in position, we can go ahead and mark our holes, and then we can drill them out. Now with both holes drilled out we can go ahead and take our hardware and tighten it down. Now you'll want to be sure that your hardware is 1/4 inch in diameter, so it fits through the mount. Once we've got one side loosely installed, let's go ahead and tighten down the other side. Then we can make sure they're both tightened down.

Then we're all set. Now let's grab our skewer. In order to put it in we'll need to undo the nut on the other side here. We can insert this in either side. We're going to go through this side because this is what's going to work best for us. Then we'll replace that nut on the other side. Now we want to be sure and leave enough room for the skewer to receive our forks on both sides right here. Let's grab our bike. Now when we grab our bike we'll want to be sure and of course remove that front tire as our forks will be sitting on the skewer like so. Now we can tighten up and close our skewer. The way you do that is you can come down here, you can adjust the nut on this side to make a nice snug fit, or you can hold it in place and then adjust the skewer on this end. Whatever you want to do will work, but we want to be able to close the skewer and have a nice snug fit around our forks, but we don't want to have it too tight because we might damage them. We'll just kind of check it every couple turns. That looks pretty good. As you can see you've got a little bit of force there. We'll just close it up. It's nice and solid and we're ready to go. Now with our bike completely loaded up and secure, let's go ahead and take it out on our test course and see how it performs. Here at our test course, let's first go into our slalom. This is going to show side to side action such as going around corners, or evasive maneuvering. Then onto our alternating speed bumps. This is going to show a twisting action such as going over potholes, or uneven pavement. Then finally onto our solid speed bumps. This is going to show an up and down action such as pulling in and out of a driveway, or out of a parking lot. That's going to complete our look at the Yakima Blockhead single bike truck bed mount, part number Y01117.

Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Have used the block head bike mounts by Yakima on trips of 800 to 1500 miles with no incident. Easy to mount the bikes and they have not released even on bumpy roads. Great product for my truck box and bikes are always in view. Easiest way I have found to transport our bikes

The Yakima racks are still performing great. I did stiffen up the truck box with a 3/4 aluminum angle on the interior to prevent metal fatigue of the box lid flexing a little. Preventive precaution: The bikes ride with security, safely, and with a quick glance in the rear view, I have complete viewing for my RV. 3000+ miles so far on bikes and racks.

Works great! It would be nice is it came with the mounting hardware, however. eTrailer.com shipped the product immediately.

With a little adaption the Yakima brackets mounted to my built in bed rails on my 2010 Nissan Frontier. With my truck cap this makes my bikes safe and secure, out of sight out of mind.

Do you have a short bed? I am looking for a mounting solution that will fit a kennel and two bikes, one on either side. Thanks,Peter

This is a very versatile product, for any cycling enthusiast. I've used these for several applications that require imaginations to get the bikes from place to place. They work great and easy to apply for those DIY. Thanks

SOLID construction ... this thing is a beautiful little block of metal with a robust skewer and clamp. I’ll be using mine mounted to a 2x6 running across the front of my F150 bed floor. Very nicely made. 1” lag bolts fit well under the curved shape.

Ask the Experts about this Yakima Truck Bed Bike Racks

  • Will Yakima BlockHead Truck Bed Mounted Bike Rack, Part # Y01117, Work with Ladies Beach Cruiser
The Yakima BlockHead Single Bike Truck Bed Mounted Rack, Part # Y01117, is intended as a universal carrier that can fit the majority of bicycle sizes and types when mounted in a truck bed. The horizontal skewer rod is 9 millimeters thick; as long as the bike axles are not thicker than this the fork prongs will fit. The typical trunk-mount type bike racks that mount to the rear of a passenger vehicle often do have compatibility issues with the curved frame tubes on beach cruisers. However,...

  • Will a Bike with Disc Brakes Fit the Yakima BlockHead Y01117
The Yakima BlockHead # Y01117 works with some bikes with disc brakes but not all. Since I can't guarantee that it will work with your specific disc brake bike I recommend looking at some other options. The similar Hollywood racks carrier, # HRT970, shows that it is compatible with both disc brake bikes and non-disc brake bikes so it is one option. The Swagman Impakt # S64703 is another. I have linked videos of both carriers for you.

  • Hardware Size to Install the Yakima BlockHead Single Bike Truck Bed Mounted Rack
The hardware for the Yakima BlockHead bike rack, # Y01117, is not included. Basically you can use any hardware that will fit and that is appropriate for the surface you wish to mount the rack on. I recommend a fastener that requires an uncommon tool to help deter theft. The instructions mention using 1/4 inch (6mm) bolts or screws, washers, and locking nuts. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you.

  • What is the Weight Limit for Yakima Single Bike Truck Bed Mounted Bike Rack
I have a solution for you, however, my technical contact at Yakima stated the heaviest bike they would recommend mounting on the Yakima BlockHead Single Bike Rack Mount # Y01117 would be 35lbs. He said he would definitely not mount a tandem bike due to not only the weight of the bike but also the amount of sway which is a result of the highway speeds combined with the weight of the bike. My technical contact at Thule suggested the Insta-Gater # TH501. The provisions on this is that you...

  • Fork Mounted Bike Rack Mount Recommendations for the Bed of a 2003 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab
To install the Yakima BlockHead Single Bike Truck Bed Mounted Rack, part # Y01117, you will need to use the included template and drill two holes in the bed of your truck near the back and then run the bolts through those hole and use the included fender washers and nuts to attach this from the underside of your bed. To access the underside of your bed you will most likely need to crawl underneath the rear of your truck. Having a buddy help you out at this point would be nice. One guy...

  • Truck Bed Bike Rack Recommendation for a 1999 Chevrolet S10 Extended Cab Pickup
As long as the front wheel on your bike is connected to the front fork with a 9-mm quick mount skewer, you can bolt the Yakima BlockHead bike carrier, # Y01117, to any part of the truck bed that is sufficient to carry the bike, normally the truck bed rails. This carrier requires drilling and bolting the head to your truck bed. I would recommend the Thule Bed-Rider 2, # TH822XTR, fork mount rack, that can be easily installed and removed, and uses the same style of fork mount attachment....

  • Can 3 Bikes be Carried with the Yakima BikerBar
Yes, you can definitely add a 3rd bike holder for the Yakima BikerBar # Y01141 with part # 8820115 and the 9-mm Quick-Release Skewer # Y02118. Just make sure that you have enough room for all 3 bikes in your truck bed. To use a fork-mount bike rack that installs with hardware in the bed of your pickup you'll need to use the BlockHead # Y01117 or # Y01118 from Yakima. I reached out to my contact at Yakima who said that you can't use the bracket of the BikerBar in your truck bed like you...

  • Recommendations for Carrying 5 or 6 Bikes on a 5 ft by 8 ft Trailer
To carry five or six bikes in your trailer, I would recommend picking up five or six Yakima BlockHead truck bed bike mounts, # Y01117. These bike mounts can mount to the side rails or floor if you have an open utility trailer or they can mount to the walls or floor if you have an enclosed trailer. The fork mount design allows you to mount multiple style and sizes of bikes on the same mount. You could also take a different route and install a cargo control system like the E-Track, #...

Since one Topline cannot be configured for 5 bikes (up to 4 only) your idea of using two carriers, one for 3-bikes and one for 2-bikes, is absolutely the way to go.
