Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2006 BMW X5 - Draw-Tite

Today on our 2006 BMW X5, we'll be installing the Draw-Tite Hitch, part number 75492. This is what our hitch will look once it's installed. Next, we'll go ahead and give you a couple of measurements to assist you in selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper is 4-1/4 inches. From the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 18-1/2 inches. This will assist you at selecting accessories such as a drawbar, a bike rack, or a cargo carrier.

Now, let's go ahead with the installation. Before we can install the hitch, we'll first need to remove the rear fascia. To remove the rear fascia, there are a total of six fasteners. To access these fasteners at the rear bumper fascia, we'll need to remove the trim around the exhaust tailpipes. These are snap-in pieces so we'll simply just put it a little tug on them and pop them out of place.

While we're here, we can also remove the rear fascia door. It too just snaps in place. Now, it will expose the rear bumper fascia bolts. They will be above the exhaust tailpipes. For this application, we'll be using a T55 Torx Bit Socket to remove the bumper bolts.

Now with both of those removed, we have four additional fasteners, two in each wheel well. Now with the fasteners removed on the driver's side, I'll go ahead and repeat the same process on the passenger's side. Now, we're ready to go ahead and remove the bumper fascia. It's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you do this as it is quite large and heavy. Additionally, as you remove the bumper fascia, you'll need to be careful not to pull on the wires for the rear backup monitoring system.

This wire is a one-piece wired system so we need to disconnect it at each sensor and pop the plastic fasteners free from the bumper structure. Now, we can go ahead and remove the wire from the rear bumper fascia and structure and go ahead and set it aside. Our next step will be removing the center six Torx bit fasteners that were exposed by removing the rear bumper. Next, we'll need to mark for our forward attachment point. This will be in the axle cross member. Using our tape measure, we'll go ahead and mark from the rear going forward 1/8 inch or as per instructed. Next, we'll go ahead and show you the rear hardware. This will be the attachment hardware going across the rear cross member where we'll remove the Torx bolts earlier. This will be a new 10-mm bolt and conical toothed washer. The teeth of the washer will face the hitch and a round spacer block. The spacer block will fit into the rear cross member and the bolt and conical toothed washer will secure the hitch to the vehicle. It will sit like this. Now, we're ready to go ahead and put the hitch in place. It's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch while you install the two outer fasteners. Now, we'll go ahead and tighten up the bolts or snug them up just to draw the hitch up to the cross member, so that we can use the front hole of the hitch as a template to draw out our hole into the cross member. Using my 1/2-inch bit, we'll go ahead and use it as a center or pilot to where the center of our whole will be. Now with that done, we'll go ahead and use a smaller bit and use a step-bit process to drill out to our final size hole. Now with our 1/2-inch hole drilled out, we're going to go ahead and remove the hitch and set it aside. With the hitch out of the way, we'll now open the hole up to 11/16. Again, we'll use a step-bit process. Now, we're ready to go ahead and put the hitch back in position. For our forward fastener, we'll be using the rivet nut, split lock washer, flat washer, 1/2-inch bolt, and 1/2-inch conical toothed washer. With our 10-mm bolts in and lightly snug up, it will allow us to go ahead and put the insert up into the cross member, and then our bolt and conical toothed washer will go through the hitch, to the flat washer, to the lock washer, and into the rivet nut. Now, we'll go ahead and tighten the bolt down to secure the rivet nut into the cross member. Once we have it tightened down, we'll go ahead and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. Now with that completed, we'll need to go ahead and remove the bolt. Remove the split lock washer and flat washer. At this time, we'll go ahead and remove the hitch completely, reinstall the front hardware, the 1/2-inch bolt, and conical toothed washer. Now with all our fasteners in place, we can go ahead and tighten them down. Next, we'll go ahead and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. Now with that completed, we're ready to go ahead and cut out the rear lower fascia to go around the hitch. With our tape measure, we can measure it's going to be approximately 4-1/2 inches by 2-3/4 inches wide. Now, we'll go ahead and measure it out on the lower fascia and cut it out with our rotary zip tool. With that done, we're ready to go ahead and reinstall the rear bumper. Keep in mind that part of reinstalling it will be reinstalling the wires that we removed earlier to the backup sensor system. Now with our wires reinstalled and with an extra set of hands, we'll go ahead and reinstall the rear bumper fascia. With the fascia in place, we'll go ahead and reinstall the six fasteners in the rear tailpipe fascia trim. With that completed, this will complete the install of our Draw-Tite Hitch, part number 75492, on our 2006 BMW X5.

DrawTite 75492 is a perfect fit to my '01 BMW X5. Beefy, secure. The included printed instructions were accurate, but not very helpful (step-by-step). However, the videos published by etrailer.com were outstanding, and I would recommend NOT attempting without watching their videos! 429441

Great product. Fit like a dream. The only draw back for some people would be the 11/16" hole you have to drill in the lower sub frame to install a rivet nut. I happen to have drill bits that are reduced to 1/2" shank but I'm sure a lot of people don't have one. Other than that, very satisfied. Also, I shopped everywhere and Etrailer.com had the best price with free shipping! Received the hitch in two days with regular UPS shipping. Impressive! Thanks. 90084

2003 BMW X5

Called and talked to Brendan, he knew his products, understood what I needed and explained everything clearly and w/o making me feel like a was clueless. He recommended the Draw-Tite after we spoke. I ordered it and soon after we talked received an email from Brendan telling me it had shipped. He also included links to installation and tips. Was not expecting that. The hitch was shipped for free and arrived exactly when promised. The box was a little beat up but the Hitch was fine, it was wrapped in 30 feet of paper. The instructions and videos were perfect - I knew exactly what to do and what to expect. I installed the hitch myself (yes it would have been helpful to have a 2nd set of hands - however it fit right on the car with just a little fiddling to get the cross member bolt aligned. Instructions were clear and eTrailer videos on YouTube were perfect. I like the quality of the hitch, really robust, fit and finish was great. All the mounting hardware was included. Only slight issues was drilling he 11/16 home on the cross member of my X5 - was good that Brendan sent the installion videos prior, otherwise I wouldn’t have had the correct size still bit (11/16 is larger than any of the bits I had, and I have a lot - good new thought now i’ve Added N 11/16 bit to my collection!) I’m not going to tow, at least not anytime soon - though a class 3 hitch seems overkill, i’m using The the hitch for a bike carrier - i feel good about how sturdy it is. Yes I will recommend ETrailer to my friends and love the Draw-Tite hitch. Special thanks to Brendan for all his help. 544030

Install was quite easy overall - and the installation video was very helpful. It took under an hour to install with 2 people. I used a stepped drill bit so I didn't need a drill with a large chuck and didn't have to keep changing bits to get up to the 11/16" size required - it was well worth the $6 I paid for it at Harbor Freight. The cooling fins of the rear differential might be hard to work around with a bulky drill - mine was just small enough to fit. The hitch and bolts all felt like good quality materials. So far the hitch is just for a bike rack, but hoping to acquire a tent trailer and the weight rating specifications for this should be more than enough to haul one. 664646

Fairly simple to install. Have not had one single issue. I’ve towed pretty close to its 6000lb rating and no signs of any problems. My usual tow almost once a week is around 3500lbs. 605809

by:
2006 BMW X5

I would give it a higher rating but there was a small problem with the install. The set nut that comes with the hitch would not stay put in the cross member that it go's into. Owning a Bodyshop for the past 30 years I am very familiar with these fasteners using them hundreds of times over the years. I drilled it as per the instructions but the nut didn't grab the hole like it should. I ended up welding the nut to a thin plate and welding that plate to the cross member to make it work. Having the equipment on hand made it easy for me but for the average person installing it at home it would have been a problem. 571775

The trailer hitch was delivered REALLY fast, and FREE. That things weighs a lot. I was a little nervous when I saw the box, it was pretty damaged with the hitch sticking out. I know the hitch was not damaged (it is built really well and heavy duty) but was worried about the bolts for the installation. at first I could not find them and then saw everything in the receiver opening. They are very smart to put everything safely there. I also like the video of how i will be installing the hitch and all the other helpful hints. So far I am a VERY happy customer and would buy from them again and recommend them 463417

  • What Size Torx Bits are Needed to Install Draw Tite Hitch 75492
Draw Tite states that to install the part # 75492 that you mentioned you'll need Torx bit sizes of T55 and T50. The wrench sizes aside from that you'll need are 8 mm, 13 mm, and 3/4 inch. I attached an install video for this hitch for you to check out as well.

  • Solution for Nutsert of Draw Tite Hitch for 2005 BMW X5 that Allows Bolt to Just Spin
You are going to have to find a way to hold the nutsert so that you can remove the bolt and try again. It's a pretty tricky situation getting that bolt setup right but you have to do it just like the install instructions and video show. If you push hard enough on the hitch up into the nutsert you should be able to get the hitch to hold it tight enough to the frame to prevent it from moving so that you could remove the bolt.
