Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2012 Honda Civic - Draw-Tite

Today on this 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid we'll be installing the Draw-Tite Hitch, part number 24763. Here are a few measurements that will help when selecting accessories for your new hitch such as a bike rack or cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the bumper will be 4 inches and from the top of the receiver tube to the ground will be 11 inches. Now we'll go ahead with our install. To begin our install, we'll need to remove the plastic shroud on the driver's side. There are four pushpins and three 10-mm bolts holding it up.

We'll use a screw driver to remove the pushpins. With that removed we next need to remove the exhaust hanger here which we'll use a special tool to remove it. With that out of the way, we can now remove and trim the heat shield. It has four screws holding it up, two on the outboard side and two on the inboard side. With the heat shield removed, we will trim it here as this point will be where our hitch will eventually mount up to while the rest will be sandwiched between the hitch and the frame.

With the heat shield prepped and out of the way, we can now point out our mounting points for the hitch. We'll be using these holes here on both the driver's and passenger's side as well as the tow loop here in the middle of the trunk area. Due to this being a Hybrid we'll need to drill the hole to the proper size. Before we can put the hitch into position, we need to trim the plastic shroud and put it back into place as the hitch will be on the outside of it. You also have the option of leaving it off.

To make the proper cuts we'll align the hitch over the shroud and using a colored marker will outline where we need to cut. Now with our marks made we can cut out what we need. To do this you can use either a utility knife or a Dremel tool. Now we'll put our shroud back into place loosely. With all our prep work done we can lift the hitch into position.

You may want to use an extra set of hands to help you do this as you want to make sure you lift the exhaust into position as you lift the hitch. We'll attach it to the tow loop first securing it with a U bolt. Next, we'll go to the passenger's side and place our handle nut into position before placing our heat shield up. We can now put our heat shield back up and attach it with the three fasteners. The handle nut assembly will also be placed on the driver's side. After that we can attach our hitch to the handle nuts using the bolts and conical tooth washers. With everything in place we can tighten our hitch down and torque to specification as stated in the instructions. Our last step will be to reinstall the rubber hanger to the exhaust and put the rest of the fasteners into the plastic shroud. And there you have it for part number 24763 from Draw-Tite on our 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid.

Good hitch and good fit. I needed an additional hitch equipped vehicle to pull my small A class trailer on occasion if my larger vehicle is unavailable. I thought it would also be nice to be able to use a hitch mounted bike carrier. I called in to order and spoke with Angela because I had some questions. She was extremely helpful, answered all of my questions, set me up with everything I needed, and got it to me in 2 days. The hitch is well made, has a durable coating (my kids were messing with it before I installed it and it showed no marks) and it fit well. My only complaint on this hitch is that the center mounting u bolt is only a grade 2 fastener. My torque wrench malfunctioned and I broke the bolt. (No fault of etrailer or drawtite. That one is on me.) Replacement was easy with a 3/8 " cable clamp bolt, but I was a bit disappointed it wasn't a harder bolt to start with. I did not have to trim the heat shield over the exhaust on the 08 Civic, but I did need to trim the plastic cover on the driver's side to clear the hatdware. I used a dremel tool with a small cutting wheel and it went very smoothly. Angela also set me up with a Curt drawbar, ball and wiring kit too. Those are equally as pleasing and the wiring kit was the easiest I've ever installed. This is my second etrailer hitch purchase. I have found them to be responsive and helpful. I love the install videos they have on their site. It takes the guesswork out of the equation. The fit and installation go smoothly. (With this application, an extra set of hands would be very useful.) The pricing and service are fantastic. Did I mention that I really love the install videos they have on their site? The videos were the reason for my first hitch purchase from them. I thought a company willing to do that to make it easy for their customers, earned an opportunity for my business. etrailer is now my recommendation and go to source for trailering componants. 574041

Headi M was a breath of fresh air...when compared to my conversations with U-HAUL!!! Here are some examples of my experience ordering from Heidi: 1 she actually cared about me and showed it over the phone 2 she listened to my bike hitch requirements and confirmed all details 3 I could almost see her smiles over the phone 4 She was having fun working at her company and helping me at the same time 5 She shared the pricing, which also impressed me 6 Her delivery timing was faster than I expected 7 She told me a little bit about her company and how they are very proud 8 She followed up with an e-mail to make sure everything went well 9 She shared very helpful YOUTUBE videos that I watched to install the unit 10 The installation and end product was so fantastic that my biking buddies are now very jealous!!!!!!!! I thank Heide and all of her friends at etrailer for their service excellence and it looks like our other car will need a etrailer unit as well!!!!!!!!! 574339

Quality perfect. I should have bought this item sooner. We now have light towing capabilities on my wife's Honda Civic. And if she's happy, that's all that matters. I would like to commend retailer on a product well made. Fits like a glove, very easy to install, 1 hour tops with a floor jack and jack stands. Customer service was superb, and George is tip notch on communication. Will certainly purchase again from in the future. Thank you wholeheartedly. The Horton's, Greeneville, Tn 564506

I'm NOT the most handy of a handyman! Nevertheless, with a little patience and a careful watching of the install video, I successfully installed the etrailer #24763 hitch onto my 2010 civic without... well a hitch. Thanks from, after 1 year and numerous camping trips, I and our popup camper having been there and returned as planned. This was a very good purchase, and relatively easy install. 560966

Difficult install drops rating This hitch comes bundled with the necessary parts for mounting a hitch ball, which is nice, and all the parts are high quality. Mounting under my 2007 Civic coupe was a little tougher than the instructions led me to believe. I had to lower the exhaust, but then when the hitch was mounted to the frame, the exhaust would not clear the hitch to get back into its mounting grommits, so I had to remove the hitch and work with the exhaust resting on the hitch while I bolted in place. This resulted in some difficulty. Also, the heat shield had trouble clearing the hitch when trying to put it back in place, so the rear drivers side bolt had to be left off. I installed on the street, and am sure it would be easier if one had a lift/ramp to work under. 247

I discovered etrailer while researching a hitch for my 2008 honda civic. I was very impressed that they had videos showing installation for both the hitch and wiring for my exact car. 4 days later the hitch and wiring were all installed with no troubles. Everything installed exactly as the videos showed. I couldn't be happier. Etrailer has earned my business. I rate them A+ for support, value and quick shipping. 151468

Thank you for following up with me. I couldnt be happier one year later with our purchase. The hitch and wiring for the trailer work perfectly and I would not hesitate to purchase from you again and have already recommended your site to others. I was very impressed especially with the videos that allowed me to see how installation should go before I even ordered. This is a great feature. Thanks again for great service!!!

A Piece of Cake! The product arrived very well packaged from etrailer. I was especially impressed with the accuracy of the delivery information and the overall value of the product. Installation was easy, if you prepare ahead of the game...and I have a few tips not in the instructions. It did take just about the advertised 1/2 hour to install. First, raise and support the rear of the car (no small task with a Civic). Use a floor jack under the tail hook, then use a single jack stand to support the vehicle, placed in the center where the rear suspension lower control arms attach. For safety, position 2 non load supporting jack stands under the rocker panels in the rear. Tip 1 - The instructions will tell you to position the hitch and attach it to the frame using the handle nuts and 1/2" bolts...not easy. Instead, position the hitch and attach the U-bolt provided around the tail hook. Run the nuts on part way and now the hitch is suspended and much easier to work with. Tip 2 - Be careful when removing the OEM plastic fastener from the passenger side panel. They are brittle and break easily. If you want it perfect, grind a radius in the plastic panel to fit over the hitch bolt head and then reinstall the plastic fastener. Tip 3 - The exhaust heat shield fits back almost perfectly with the hitch in place; however since the hitch mounting plate fits under the heat shield, one of the fasteners is now too short (and this is why they tell you that trimming may be needed...it isn't). If you're detail oriented, simply get yourself a longer M6 fastener (get M6 X 30mm) and make a spacer out of a piece of 1/4" tubing. Fit the spacer under the heat shield and thead the bolt through it...fits perfectly. 895

This installation turned out to be harder than I anticipated. I had to totally remove the plastic pan to make the hitch bolt up to the frame, which meant I had to refasten the bumper screws to the frame so that there was stability back there. I think the hitch will work just fine, but it was not an easy job for me and my elderly companions. 146026

Comments

The hitch has been used a number of times and is doing fine.

I bought the Draw Tite hitch (24763) for a 2012 Civic coupe a few weeks back and managed to get FREE 2 day shipping. That same day I ordered a Thule Apex Bike rack on a separate order (3-5 day shipping) and I was surprised to have them both two days later! The ordered parts were all correct but I was a bit confused at first because the website differentiated between 2012 Honda coupe not Si and Hybrid although it seems it works for all models ( instructions provided information to include Si and Hybrid models). It took awhile to install and was relieved to find out I did not have to drill any holes or make them larger. If you buy this product and install it yourself make sure that the U-bolt part fits all the way up otherwise your arm bolts will be misaligned with the frame. Since I thought I had ordered the incorrect product I called etrailer.com and spoke with Sam about the issue. He was able to help me out and provide more information on the product and order number. I was able to go to Draw Tite's website and get additional information to see if my model required drilling. If you happen to lose the instructions, the Draw Tite website will give you a way to print out the instructions. I also recommend watching the youtube video to make it easier otherwise you will struggle like I did. Overall the installation to about 2 hours since I had difficulty aligning the holes and trying to determine if drilling was required. From start to finish I would recommend this company for their dedication to getting your product to your door in a timely manner. If any issues arise they are great at helping resolve your issues within minutes of placing the call. I would definitely recommend this website to friends and any future customers that are researching etrailer.com for quality services. Hope this review helps you all out! 243807

This is an awesome product! I have not had any issues with the trailer hitch. The only thing that I have done is checked the bolts to ensure that they remain tight. After a year of owing it I would definitely still rate it as 4 stars and recommend it to friends.

2015 Honda Civic

Ordered the Draw-Tite 24763 for my 2015 Honda Civic Sedan, and was very satisfied at the speed and detail of not only the correspondence and email between etrailer.com but also the shipping speed and condition of packaging. I received this in six days from start to finish of order. I did not spring for faster shipping and was satisfied with this type of time frame considering the size and weight of packaging. I also got the Thule Hitching Post TH934XTR four bike rack and THSTL2 hitch lock anti-rattle device. I had planned ahead by watching all of the great videos on etrailer and printed out some instructions from the site. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised with their attention to detail that this was unnecessary as they included a copy of the same instructions I printed in the box. The install went exactly like the instructions/videos said it would and if I hadn't been interested in getting the beauty plastic underbody piece back on I could have been done in fifteen minutes with a lift and another set of hands. All in all a very easy kit to install, and thanks to etrailer for the speed, quality, and including all the necessary hardware and instructions. 5/5 would definitely do business with again and recommend. 269802

Build quality of this hitch reciever was ok. There was a bit of weld spatter on some of the joints and even a small gap on one of the arm welds. More disappointing was the condition of the hitch when it was delivered. There were multiple finish gouges and scratches and one of the arms was bent 1/2" out of true. This caused a bit of frustration during installation but etrailer.com's customer support provided advice on how to straighten the bent arm enough so it would line up with my vehicle's frame. I would rate the hitch receiver a "5" but eTrailer sales/support an "8". 138941

Thanks for the follow-up. The hitch is still working like a champ. When the weather cooperates, I use it several times a week to take my mountain bike to local trails.

2014 Honda Civic

Took a bit longer than anticipated but the final results look good. My 2014 Civic has about 6 plastic clips and three 10 mm screws that hold the plastic tray in place - more than is depicted in the video. Thoughts: 1) Use silicone spray to help with muffler gasket removal. Yes, car is only 5 months old but I was able to easily remove and replace the gasket using only my hands. 2) Dry fit everything before attempting final install. Using hay twine to hang the hitch from the car hanger provides support AND movement. 3) Had to grind about 1/8 inch from the handle nut on the heat shield side. Appears to be a welded nut in the tube where the heat shield screw tightens and this was restricting a clear shot at the nut. 4) Hang a loop of string from the handle nuts so one can more easily initially thread the bolt into the nut. Pulling down on the string keeps the handle nut from slipping. This is especially important on the driver side as one has to reach up through the plastic tray. 181006

2012 Honda Accord EX

Product arrived via UPS Ground on 8 Feb, perfect condition, necessary parts all there. The installation took me just over 60 minutes. I would suggest you inform customers for this product on a 2012 Honda EX coupe of 2 prerequisites: one that a conventional shop-type vehicle lift is available and two that it be a 2 person job. I could have cut the install time in half with an assistant. Everything fit okay, very tightly, no slack, but then who wants slack in a trailer hitch? I don't intend to be pulling any trailers, just using my bike rack in the receiver. Working alone, it went together best for me to first fasten the U-Bolt (step 6 on your install instructions), then next the driver's side and the u-bolt loose then when all 3 fasteners are threaded tighten to torque specs one at a time. 3 sockets, a couple of extensions and a ratchet are required: 19mm for the 2 frame bolts, 15 mm for the u-bolt and 10 mm for the bolts holding the heat shield. Photos show the job at the beginning, completion, and the view from the vehicle rear with the completed install. 31844

2012 Honda Civic

This hitch installed easier than my last one. It took me 1.5 hours by myself, with car up on ramps. Another set of hands just to steady things would have cut 30 minutes off the install. I had to trim the heat shield after the hitch was up. Much easier than I expected. Mark with a Sharpie and cut with tin snips. The metal was so thin, I think heavy scissors would have cut it. I like the "U Bolt" attachment to the tow hook. It takes the weight off of your arms for the rest of the install. The "handle nuts" are a really great help. You can hold the handle nut while you screw the bolt up into the nut. Much easier than the "fishing wire" of my last Honda install. No drilling required on my 2012 Honda Civic EX. 221865

2017 Honda Civic

Very nice unit, feels solid, the welds are good. Fits my application (2010 Civic Coupe, non-Si) perfectly and tows well. A few tips on installation... first, I concur with the other reviews here - do not install the hitch to the frame rails first, install it loosely to the tow hook in the middle first. This makes it much easier to hold up and to work around, especially if you are installing it by yourself. As far as Honda parts that need to be removed to install this - you don't have to remove the heat shield, just take off 3 of the 4 bolts to let it hang down. The fourth bolt - that you don't remove - is the one that is hard to access anyway, so just leave it in place. When you reinstall the heat shield, you can just leave the top / rear bolt out of the shield and this will preclude your having to cut or bend the shield. That missing bolt won't be an issue. Or, as I did, you can install a longer bolt of the same thread pitch / diameter, and torque it up, which as you tighten it will cause the heat shield to bend around the hitch mounting bolt and properly secure it to the underside of the car. The exhaust does not need to come off, just pull the 2 tangs out of the rubber hanger and let the exhaust hang - it'll be fine. A side note on that, if you screw up and install the hitch with the exhaust still hanging below it - as I did (oops) - not a big deal. There is enough "slack" in the exhaust that you can sit on the ground, plant your feet on the back of the muffler on either side of the tail pipe, and shove it towards the front of the car, and clear the hitch my a few millimeters, thus allowing the exhaust to be properly hung above the hitch. This way there is no need to remove the hitch if you forget to move the exhaust above it prior to bolting the hitch down. Also - as far as the plastic cover on the driver's side that is held on by a plastic rivet, that rivet will probably break off when you are removing it - no worries. Once the hitch is installed, the rivet is pretty much useless anyway, since the tension of the hitch against the plastic cover will be more than enough to keep it in place, and there is a 10mm nut that further secures the cover. The cover does not need to come off, just break the rivet and remove the 10mm nut. Last tip, I found it easier to use a 19mm socket (same as 3/4") on a power drill with 6" extension to get the two frame rail bolts to seat into the handle nuts than it was to thread them by hand. It's tight quarters down there and the drill and socket give you the extra reach and faster rotation to get the bolts to seat up fast. Use your hands if you want, but one side took me 20 minutes and one side took me 3; the drill shaved off 17 minutes... then properly torque the bolts using a ratchet or a wrench. Total install took me an hour, and I'm of average if not a little below average mechanical ability. 68041

I am reviewing the trailer hitch receiver AND the etrailer customer service. First off, the trailer hitch installation was straightforward, and the videos showed me exactly how to do it. I was able to install it myself, using my hydraulic jack at certain points to help me lift the hitch into position to bolt it in place. Please see the pics below. The customer service at etrailer is phenomenal! My order was upgraded to express shipping as a nice unexpected treat. I ordered the hitch receiver and also a bike rack. Both items arrived two business days later! However, there was a problem: the bike rack didn't have the included hardware kit (bolts, nuts, pins, etc.). Here's where I was impressed- etrailer reps immediately rush shipped me the missing hardware kit, and were absolutely pleasant on the phone and in emails. I am extremely impressed with this company, and will be ordering again. I highly recommend etrailer.com! Thanks! 24646

The installation was very easy per the instructions. After one year, the hitch is still performing as intended. I definitely would recommned this hitch for a honda civic. I installed a similar hitch from the same manufacturer on a 2007 accord with identical results. A well thought out design. On a side note, etrailer provided excellent customer service. When I place the order, it appeared it might not delivered in the stated time period. etrailer worked with the manufacture to make sure it was delivered within the stated time frame. 520122

So far so good. Ordering quick and easy. Package arrived quickly and undamaged. All the pieces in the box along with instructions. Not as easy to install as indicated. The nut and bolt in the muffler side very hard to line up and complete. The muffler is in the way and the mat led to tight quarters and a slight angle to deal with. Finally got it and all is good. 515551

If the muffler is lowered as shown in the video Ive linked, installation is much easier.

4 stars because it fits and seems strong. 5 stars if all goes well after I use it. I purchased the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4" for ( code 24763). I installed it on a 2011 Honda Civic LX. I was happy to find that it fit correctly. Installation is as indicated in the videos. I used to 5 gallons buckets to help hold it up to install it and removed passenger side tire. It is a little tight on passenger side, but as expected. I have not actually pull the light trailer I plan to, but I think it will be ok, as I only plan to do it occasionally and at short distance. My manual for Honda Civic indicates no more than 1000 lbs. 489515

2012 Honda Civic

Solid product, relatively easy install. No drilling required on my 2012 Civic Ex. It took me the advertised 1.5hrs to do the install. However, I could have had it done in about an hour if I had not originally installed it without the muffler tangs above the hitch... My only gripe is that it arrived with some chips in the paint, see photos. 457203

I installed the hitch, # 24763, approximately one year ago on my daughter's Honda Civic. She uses it for a bike rack. I greatly appreciate the installation instructions and videos. I followed the directions and torqued all bolts to specification. So far no rust or corrosion worth mentioning. 457066

Comments

The hitch has been working admirably. I bought a dealer installed hitch for my Subaru and it is not as robust as the hitch I purchased from eTrailer. No significant rust or degradation on the hitch from eTrailer.

It was easier to install then I thought, and I have very little experience with these projects. On the first tow I drove from Eureka CA to Fresno and didn’t have any issues. Put on a 2013 Honda Civic and towed a 4x8 uhaul enclosed trailer partially loaded. 452555

Install went OK, a bit harder than I thought after seeing the install video on etrailer.com; I had to trim a bit both the exhaust shield and fuel tank plastic cover, none of which were done in the video for a same model car (2010 sedan non hybrid/ si). Other than that, smooth sailing. I give only 4 stars instead of 5 because the set missed one flange nut for the U-bolt; fortunately found an old one in my garage. So far, I made one trip of about 2 hrs with a Thule TH934XTR rack and 2 bikes on it - a lot better than my old trunk rack, that's for sure. 441656

only problem I really had was installing this hitch alone and at age 80. I used my floor jack to hold it in place. Honda civic 2014 fit well. instructions could have been better as to what hole the bolts lined up with and the difficulty with the rear under cover and getting it back on. the wiring was simple enough once I got the truck covering off. service good..arrived on time. 434954

During installation found it impossible to install the hitch and to re-install the plastic shroud part. Tried for over 2 hours, but could not make it work. Ultimately, had to leave the plastic shroud off. Otherwise the hitch does its job well. Does hit bottom on steep driveways with a moderate load in the car. 429791

I got in a rear-end car accident today and this rack saved me and my car - no joke. The rack material is so strong that my car was not damaged and the rack still functions! despite the fact that my car was pushed forward four feet. In addtion the rack works well for my bike. 419019

Comments

Thank you so much for your review. I hope everyone is ok! Just a quick note, when your vehicle has been involved in an accident, the manufacturer recommends that you replace the hitch or hitch accessory due to potential unseen damage resulting from the collision.

Installation on my 2010 Honda Civic was very easy. It took about an hour. I'm using the hitch with a platform style bike hauler. I can now haul my bike to trails further away from my house. Only downside is that having 2 bikes on the back of a Civic creates more drag than I anticipated. I'm probably going to install the transmission cooler which I originally didn't think necessary for just a bike rack. 410981

Fairly easy install. I took the advice of another installer who suggested that one completely remove the muffler first which made the whole installation rather smooth - I had no problem reinstalling the three bolts holding the heat shield. I only had to ask my wife for a hand holding the hitch in place three times during the process. 398900

bought and installed the Draw-Tite hitch on my 2013 Honda Civic sedan. Installed fine. Had to trim the plastic on the driver side but that was not a big deal. A tip for all you DIY'ers..... get the hitch in position and maybe install the center U-bolt and just start the nuts. This way the hitch is held in place, and still wiggles around a bit. That will make reinstalling the heat shield much easier. 369095

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Where is the Draw-Tite Class I Hitch # 24763 Manufactured
  • The Draw-Tite Class I hitch that fits your 2012 Honda Civic sedan, part # 24763, is made in Mexico. This is not at all uncommon for lighter-duty hitches like this. Curt offers their own Class I hitch, part # C11391, that is USA-made and which includes a pin and clip. Note that if used with any non-trailer load, say a bike rack or cargo carrier, Curt requires you to use their stabilizing strap # 18050 which is not a requirement for the Draw-Tite. I attached an FAQ article to the right on rust prevention that you may find informative as well.

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2009 Honda Civic SI Sedan
  • The hitch you will want for your 2009 Honda Civic SI sedan is the Draw Tite hitch part # 24763. All of the hitches will have about the same visibility, but what separates this hitch from the others is that it doesn't require a stabilizer strap like the Curt does when using a non-supported load and it doesn't come with a ball mount like the Hidden Hitch that you wouldn't need. • Can a 2008 Honda Civic Sedan with Manual Transmission Tow 325-Lb Boat/Trailer
  • Your 325-lb boat and trailer combination is a fairly light tow load but just the same the car maker gets the final word on whether towing anything is advisable. You can check your owner's manual for your specific vehicle since it will reflect the particular version you have (DX, LX, EX, or EX-L) and its capacities. The online version of the owner's manual that I reviewed (page 215) does not prohibit towing in general, so that's a good start. Check your manual (or with your dealership by...

  • What is the Proper Rise/Drop Ball Mount for a 2006 Honda Civic
  • The recommended drawbar for a 2006 Honda Civic with Class I hitch is part # 3593. Part # 3593 is the proper amount of rise for most trailers that fall under 2,000 pounds.
