Video Transcript for Yakima Overhaul HD Adjustable Truck Bed Rack Review

Hey guys, today we're going to take a look at the Yakima Overhaul HD Truck Bed Rack. Now this rack is going to allow you to get accessories and tools and other equipment above your truck bed, create more space in the inside for other cargo or gear that you might have. Now a great feature about this rack is that it can be taken off our truck bed and reinstalled with ease. All we have to do is loosen up the bolts that are clamping down onto our side posts. Once we do that on all four of them, we can pick up our rack, we can set it aside in our garage for those times where we may need to carry a pretty tall load to where it can't fit under our crossbars even when they're extended all the way. Your foot backs just stay on the side rails like so and you can reinstall it when you're done. Now the foot backs are going to be taking a good amount of space on your side rails. They are going to sit in about 3" from the edge of our side rail and it's also going to be taking up about 1 1/2" on the inside of our truck bed so just keep that in mind when deciding if you're going to travel with the foot backs still installed. As you can see I've got a cargo basket up there with a bike rack and I've got some cargo I couldn't fit in the cab.

Rather than putting it in the bed of my truck went ahead and threw it all in that basket. But you can also see I've got a ladder on the other side to let you know that you can use this for elongated loads. You can just raise your supports up to where they're above the cab of your truck and now we can fit our ladder up there without having to fit it in our truck bed to then take up more space. With that being said, you can see on the inside I've got my generator, I've got all my tools and I've even got a 64 gallon trashcan sitting under the crossbars. Now like I said, this truck bed rack is adjustable. At it's lowest point the crossbar heights can be 19" so it's low enough to get some stuff below the cab of your truck so it's not creating too much wind noise.

But at it's highest point at 30, that's going to be more than enough space to be able to aligned with a rack that could be on the cab of your truck so you can get those very elongated loads over, still have support. Now one thing I do want to point out is the HD crossbars to do not come with the truck bed rack. You're going to have to pick those up separately here at etrailer. Yakima basically did that so that you can have more customization for your rack. You don't have to get a certain length crossbar. If you're the type of person that doesn't really like having a lot of crossbar overhang you can get the shortest size.

But if you like having a lot of overhang you can see we have our back kit mounted to the overhang part of our crossbar. You can pick up the longest size. The rack is going to be compatible with all Yakima mounts. You're going to be able to carry kayaks, bikes, rooftop tents and more. The end caps are HD bars. I'm going to have nice tie down points.

You can use these to secure your cargo like we have our ladder strapped down right here. They are going to be ready for several hundred pounds of tie down strength so it's more than enough to get your cargo secured. Now we're going to go ahead and unload all of our gear so we can take a close look at the rack by itself. It is going to have a 500 pound weight capacity, however it does drop down to 300 when you're doing some extreme off roading so you do want to keep that in mind. Now like I said, each end cap is going to have it's own tie down point so it's going to total for four around the cross bars. In addition to each cross bar tie down point you are going to have one of these integrated tie down points on each of the uprights, totalling up to four and each one is going to be equipped with a bottle opener. Now we're also going to have a lot of T tracks to be able to mount a lot of other accessories. We have one on the outside of our post and we also have one on the inside. That's going to be on each upright. We're also going to have one on the top of our HD cross bar and we're one on the bottom so there's a lot of room to put whatever accessories you might want to be hauling. Now the T track on the top of the cross bar is going to have a rubber strip that helps cuts down on wind noise and drag so if you ever want to mount something on the inside of the T track you just remove the strip and then cut it to length for whatever accessory you might want to be mounting up there and then reinsert the strip. The rack has a durable aluminum construction so it is going to be rust proof and it's got a nice black powder coat finish that adds to the looks of your vehicle. No in order to adjust the height on this rack you do have to loosen a couple of bolts. We're going to have to loosen both of these up front and the two on the backside as well as the two bolts that are holding tight our crossbar so that our crossbar can adjust in the track as our post lowers or raises. We'll go ahead and just start loosening the bolts.Once you have all the bolts on both sides loosened you're going to be able to lower and raise your rack to whatever height you need it at and only have it at that specific height. Again, use the measuring tape on the inside of both of the side posts. Then you can just tighten down all of the bolts and you're ready to go.We also have two locks included with our kit. It's going to help secure each system. Just like that. When you want to put it on, you just put it back on. Now each post is going to mount using two of our J clamps right here that are going to come on the underside of our side rail and then bolt down right here and tighten down. However, if you do have the Retrax XR tonneau cover you could do away with the foot packs right here and you could purchase an adapter kit, sold separately here at etrailer, to attach this post directly to the T slot on the side rail of your Retrax. Just see etrailer for that adapter kit.Now that we've gone over all those features, let's show you how to get it installed. Now we're going to start by installing these base plates on our side rails. Couple of quick notes before we do that, you want to make sure that when you install your base plate you want to make this elongated hole right here is in the corner of the bed of your pickup. This one's going to sit right here at the back on our passenger side. See that elongated hole is going to be at the back. While the other one is going to sit towards the cab on our passenger side. You also want to make sure that with your four bolts you get your big square washers on all of them before we do any installing. We've got our four hooks and we're ready to go. Now the base plate's going to sit on our side rail just like this. Now the reason you want this elongated hole on the corner of your bed is so you have maximum adjustability. If you have any type of bows that come out inside your truck bed you can still get this all the way to the corner and be able to move your bolt around to adjust for those bows coming into the truck bed. However, we're going to let it sit about right here. We've already made our measurement and our mark. Just going to grab two bolts and drop them through the channel. Then we'll grab a hook and all we're going to do is make sure the the taller side goes up under the rail and we're just going to start threading the bolts into the shorter side. Once we get it hand tight we'll install the other one. Now we can take our included tool and tighten down our bolts the rest of the way. Now you do want to make sure that we're pushing on the plate because we want to make sure we get it as flush as possible to our side rail. It will try to pull on the inside just a bit but as long as you get it as flush as you can you'll be good. Don't need to over tighten it at all, just get it pretty snug. And then just repeat this process for the other three. Now here at the front we're going to make sure that we get our correct measurement. And the reason it's important to make sure you measure the plates on both sides even is it's going to ensure that you get the correct alignment for your cross bars when you set those up. You can base it off whatever accessory you might be hauling but for now we're just going to go from our bulkhead down this way. Once you have that done it's going to be the same process. Drop your bolts in and put your hooks on.Now that we have both of the base plates installed we're going to install our upright posts for our overhaul. Now first we're going to have to loosen up this bolt right here on both plates. This lip folds out and creates enough space for the upright post to get in there. Now we'll grab the post. You want to make sure that when installing these you get the post as far to the outside of the bed as possible so it's in the corner right here. We'll set it in place and we're going to push the lip up and tighten down our bolts. Now we'll just grab our included tightening tool and then tighten it all the way down. Don't need to over tighten, just get it pretty snug, then move onto the next one.Now we're going to adjust the height of our upright post and before you do that there's two bolts right here you have to loosen. There's also two more on the other side that you have to loosen and then you're going to have full adjustability with it. Now like I said, we do have the measuring tape that's integrated on the side rail. We're going to take it up to the measurement that we desire. We're going to go about 25 because that's the height of our roof roughly. And we're just going to hand tighten these bolts down to make sure it stays in place. And from there we can grab one of our included tools and tighten it down the rest of the way.You do want to make sure you adjust all four of the uprights at the same measurement. Now that we have the base plates and the uprights installed and measured to our specifications, we're going to repeat this whole process for the driver's side. Now we're ready to get our HD bars assembled so we can get them installed on our uprights. We're going to have two of these brackets. It's going to sit in the bottom channel of our HD bar. One's going to be on the driver's side, one on the passenger. Now there's going to be a bolt on the inside of the track right there that let's us get our end cap off. We'll just take our included tool and loosen that all the way.Now sometimes if you can't get it out, I'm just going to flip over the bar so that it falls out and we'll pull our end cap off. Now we can take our brackets and just slide them into the track. Just going to push this one to the other side, then our second one. Now we can put our end cap back on. Make sure you push it all the way. We'll take the bolt, put it back in and tighten it down. Make sure you repeat this process for the other bar.Now what we're going to do is locate our bracket. We made sure to get them both on the insides of our uprights. We're going to locate it and we're going to push it in until it hits the stop that's on the bottom side of our upright. That means it's lined up so we're just going to take our bolts. We're going to add a lock washer and a flat washer in that order. Just going to come up and under into the included holes. We'll just start threading it. There we go. Now we'll locate the second hole, which is going to be directly on the bottom of our upright. Just up in that slot. It maybe a little bit trickier to get threaded because fingers can't quite fit up there but just keep slightly turning it. Eventually it will be threaded. There we go. Just tighten down with your hands as far as you can get it.I also want to point out that we have this measuring tape on the bottom of our HD bar. We use that to measure our crossbar overhang so wanted to make sure that it was even up to our upright on both sides. Once we did that we we're ready to our out bolt in place. Now we'll take our included tightening tool, we'll just tighten it down the rest of the way. Make sure to get both of them. And then just repeat this process for the other side.Once you have everything assembled and tightened down I'm going to go ahead and give it a quick shake individually to make sure each setup's going to be pretty sturdy. Once you've done all those checks we'll go ahead and put our locks on.Now you do want to make sure you have one lock for each setup just so that they're both secure. You don't have both locks on one setup. Now, when you're putting it on you're just going to insert it, lock it up, and it's locked. However, one little cool thing about these locks is that if you have it already in the locked position like so, you just got to push it on and it's locked. Now with that all being said that's going to be it for our Yakima Overall HD Adjustable Height Truck Bed Rack.

2019 Tacoma 5’6” (had factory tri-fold, had to take off the rail pegs for that). Requires the extra track mounting kit #1 (got from Yakima). Very sturdy rack! Simple install, haven’t noticed any wind noise, even at over 75mph and with bars up high. Used 60” HD bars (very nice). Bought for frequent hauling of long/heavier kayaks. Not much steel to rust from the winter salt here. Will probably switch back to tri-fold cover for winters, wish there was an affordable cover option that worked with this. 608746

I have been using this rack for the last 3 weeks now. It's very sturdy and takes 10 minutes to adjust height with the provided tool. I use this rack to haul a 24' extension ladder. I will lower the rack when a ladder is not needed in order to fit my truck into the garage. So far so good. 615095

If the tool box was a chest style that didn't go over the tops of the bed rails the Yakima Overhaul HD Adjustable Truck Bed Rack # Y01151 would easily install without issue. Due to how this wraps around the bed rails (see picture) it couldn't fit with a crossover style box.
