Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Installation - 2016 Honda Civic

Shane: Hi. I'm Shane with etrailer.com. Today, we're going to be taking a look at and I'm going to walk you through the installation of a Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver on our 2016 Honda Civic. It's going to be great for getting items out of your vehicle. Maybe put a cargo carrier on it, you want to make more room for your passengers. Or maybe you're a bike rider and you don't want to carry the bikes inside the vehicle anymore.

It's going to be a great hitch for adding those two components to give you more room inside the vehicle. As you can see here, the cross tube of this hitch is going to be completely hidden behind the bumper fascia. The only thing we can really see is the receiver tube. So, it maintains a nice, clean look on the back of the vehicle. It's going to have nice welds on it. A very sturdy hitch.

It's going to be great for your cargo carriers and your bike racks. It can be used for smaller trailers, maybe you're pulling a kayak or a couple kayaks. So, it will work great for that also. It's going to have a single black powder coat finish, so it's really going to hold up great against rust and corrosion. This is going to be a Class I hitch. You want to make sure that you're using Class I accessories.

It's going to be an inch-and-a-quarter by inch-and-a-quarter receiver tube opening. Hitch pin hole is going to be half inch in diameter, and it will take a standard half inch hitch pin. Hitch pin and clip does not come with this hitch. However, it can be found here at etrailer.com. We're going to have rolled steel style safety chain loops.

You can see the very large opening. It's going to give us plenty of room for different size safety chain hooks. Now, let me give you a few measurements to help you when deciding on any of your hitch mount accessories you may need, such as a bike rack or a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost part of our bumper, you need about two and one half inches. That number's important for any of your hitch mount accessories that may fold up against your vehicle. From the ground to the top inner most part of your receiver tube, it's going to be about 11 inches. Keep that number in mind for any of your hitch mount accessories that may require a little bit more ground clearance. With only having 11 inches, I do recommend getting a raised shank to give you that added clearance you're going to need.As far as our weight capacities go, we're going to have a 200 pound max tunnel weight, which is the downward pressure on the inside of the receiver tube. Keep that in mind when you have a cargo carrier bike rack or when you don't want to exceed that downward pressure. As far as our towing capacity, we're going to have a 2,000 pound gross trailer weight, which is the trailer plus the load included. Always recommend checking the owner's manual of our Civic, make sure the vehicle can withstand that amount of weight. You're going to take the lowest number between the vehicle and the hitch. Now that we've gone over some of the features, let's show you how to get it installed. First thing we're going to do, is we're going to mark the center of our fascia. Right here if you push up, you'll notice this little tab here. There's a hole. You kind of line it up right with that hole, that's about the center of your fascia. We're just going to put a little mark, just about like that. Then you're going to take a flathead screwdriver, plastic trim panel tool, we need to remove these Push-In Fasteners that run from one side to the other on the bottom. We're going to pull out the center like that. Then we want to break out the base with it.In each wheel well we're going to have three Phillips head screws we need to remove. Now we're going to take a T-30 Star Bit, we're going to have a bolt here and one on the other side. We need to remove those. To give us a little bit more clearance when removing our fascia, we're going to loosen these two bolts on each taillight. Now we'll start removing our fascia. We're going to start right by our tire, where the wheel well, I mean the fender meets the fascia. We're going to slowly pull out and kind of up. It's clipped in along this edge. We're going to try and work our way to the center. Now it's a good idea to have an extra set of hands help you when you're pulling it off. That way you don't just pull off one side and it falls on the floor. Also if you have any lights in back, you need to make sure you unclip the wiring as you're pulling it off so you don't damage any of the wire connections. Now we're going to remove our bumper beam. We're going to have two bolts on top and two bolts on the bottom. We're going to use a 12 millimeter socket. We're going to pull off the bumper beam, we're going to sit it down to the side. We're going to take our hitch, we're going to take our bumper beam, sit it on top. With an extra set of hands, we'll raise our hitch and our bumper beam up, line it up with the holes. We're going to use the hardware that comes in the kit. inaudible 00:05:05 you're going to make sure the teeth are facing towards the hitch. We'll get one in on each side to help hold our hitch in place, while we install the remaining hardware. With our 13 millimeter socket, we're going to tighten and then torque all the hardware to specification in the instructions. Then you're going to need to cut out a small section on each side of your bumper beam. You can see how I have it marked out here. You can use a die grinder if you have one. I'm going to use a Dremel tool with a metal cutting blade. Next we need to trim out the lower part of our fascia. From our center mark, we're going to go out an inch-and-a-quarter each way and up four inches. Per the directions, if you wanted to drill a hole for the drill bit in the corners, just to make that rounded, you can do that or you can just square it off. Completely up to you. I'm just going to do it squared. I'm going to use a Dremel tool again, with this time a plastic cutting blade. Now we'll set our fascia back in place and see if there's any adjustments on our cut that we may need to make. Once you've attached your fascia, made any adjustments necessary, go ahead and reinstall it in reverse order from the way you took it off and you're ready to go.Again, I'm Shane with etrailer.com. I hope this video's helped you whether you're still deciding or you're in the installation process on the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver on your 2016 Honda Civic.

Hitch went up fine, except that every time I use these kits (3 installations so far) the rectangular washer is too wide. Faced with the choice of enlarging the hole in the chassis and compromising the factory paint or grinding down the washer. I choose to spend an extra 15 minutes grinding. If not for this the hitch would get a 5 star rating.I Once installed its very secure. The wiring harness C56396, also takes extra time but that's on me. It went in neatly and works well, while storing it in the trunk out of the weather. 679538

I hesitated to purchase this hitch because of the installation. I’m glad I made the purchase. Much easier installation than anticipated. 1.5 hours total...including clean up, searching for a dropped screw and measuring 3 times to make sure my cut was accurate. I placed a moving blanket under the rear of the car, no jack needed. You need to use some force to get things going but I was careful. I watched the 2019 hatchback installation video a few times...mine is the sedan and things were exactly the same. Good luck with your installation. 706534

Installed on a 2017 Civic EXT in a couple of hours. Fits perfectly and looks great with the cross tube hidden under the bumper cover. Instructions were well written. Hardest part for me was removing the bumper cover / being afraid I would break a clip or scratch the paint. Just take your time on this part of the process! I regularly tow a small kayak trailer with all-up weight of 500 lbs and tongue weight about 60 lbs. The hitch handles it without issue. 503233

Excellent engineering and Fabrication on the hitch. Holes were properly located and the unit installed easily wants the covering fascias were removed from the car. The sketch showing the areas to grind on the rear bumper could use Improvement. It is unclear what is actually required. 466226

The hitch has worked out very well for us. Mostly used for a bicycle rack carrying two bicycles. The powder coating looks like new, there is no corrosion or bending evident. We are very satisfied.

Kit for a 2016 Honda Civic sedan. Bolt-on. Also shows a Star Wars plug and a Class 1 to Class 2 hitch adapter. I'm really happy with how it turned out, even if it was a ton of effort to put on the vehicle. 505351

Hitch works great and was shipped quickly. I plan to pull a small harbor freight utility trailer with it for the occasional item that won't fit in the car. It took about 3 hours to install it and about the same about of time to install the electrical. Nice clean installation. The electrical kit was very nice and included a test light for finding the correct wires to tap into. The hardest part of the install was removing the rear bumper cover panel. It was hard to figure out how to get the clips to unhook with a screw driver. I found pulling up from the bottom while using a screwdriver to pop the clips seemed to work. 323165

Product is listed as a 9/10 on difficulty. I would say like a 3-4/10. Once you get the bumper cover off it’s smooth sailing. I did it by myself in about an hour or so. It’s nice not having an exposed bar under the bumper. I’m liking it a lot. 512956

Great hitch. Pretty easy install. Website stated 10/10 difficulty...was a little apprehensive because of that...but went ahead. Glad I did! Took about 2 hours...with two phone calls from my daughters along the way. Used a dremmel tool to cut out the bumper for clearance per the instructions. Interestingly, I used the dremmel tool to cut out the slot for the receiver...it kinda melts the bumper...just rub it off with your finger and it is a smooth clean cut. First picture is with the bumper and fascia off...second is the back of my new 2019 hatchback with the bumper still on...3rd is the finished installation...looks great! Going to put a Black on Black Honda hitch cover on...$4.95 on eBay! Price on the hitch was great too! 616593

2017 Civic LX Hatch.....I like the mount point using the existing bumper bolt holes and supplied longer bolts. The instructions did not explain how to hang the bumper on existing tabs I believe are used to aide in holding the bumper before it is bolted. This must be done by lowering the bumper in place, but the hitch must be already aligned as both will make contact with ridges on body of car, so I recommend three people help with this task. The instructions called for 4 inches deep to be removed off the lower bumper cover, but only about 3 inches is needed for clearance, so I will be purchasing a new bumper cover. The installation is actually very easy since I loosened the tail lights and rear lower hatch seal. I believe this will not only allow me to use my bike rack and basket, but also add to the safety in the event of a rear collision. 514782

Hi im happy i purchase this product took me 2 to install the product from installing and cutting underneath dont rush to cut the space so you wont cut it so wide you have to measure the center, the rear bumper to look neat i use flexible rubber hose around the cut at seen in the picture. I love this product because you can hide the long tube underneath the bumper to look nice and clean. Just follow the instruction and everything just fine. I surely recommend this product to any sedan car who wants there hitch rack looks great. Thank you 559916

Easy bolt on with some trimming of bumper and body. Nice and clean looking how the hitch just extends down. 376798

Perfect Hitch for the civic. It is so discrete barely appearing below the bumper. The other type of hitch that attaches under the car requires drilling is not good. This hitch is seems perfect

Hitch works perfectly. This is my 5th E-trailer hitch I have owned and installed now. I would buy again for the future (when necessary) and would recommend. I installed this on a 2018 Honda Civic Si with center mount exhaust. To do this, I had to cut off the mass production exhaust and rebuild it (see photos). Looks great and works perfectly. 565045

Ok but would help with directions where a little better. Installation was ok until the mounting part, the bumper guard didnt set correctly because of the hooks on the frame not allowing for the bolt holes to line up. After this one of bolts stripped and had to buy another at home depot. We will see how this does with my bike rack 722607

I installed this Draw-Tite hitch on a new 2019 Civic hatchback. The installation took about two hours and went pretty smoothly. The video on etrailer.com was very helpful to understand the installation steps, but I made a few deviations that may be helpful to others. 1. I removed the tail light housings completely as it makes seeing the clips easier when reinstalling the bumper cover. After removing the two phillips screws, the tail lights are secured by two clips that release by pulling the housing outward. I then just unscrewed each bulb socket, released the one cable stay, and set them aside. 2. I used an air powered cut-off tool to trim the bumper ends for clearance - it worked fast and made a clean cut. 3. When reinstalling the bumper with the hitch, there is a hooked sheetmetal tab that extends from the bumper mount point on the car frame and rests in a notch on the bumper's mounting flange. With the added offset from the hitch, that tab can be difficult to latch and may get in the way. After struggling a bit to get both sides latched, I ended up just bending one tab down a little to move it out of the way. I'm guessing it's just an assembly aid for the factory. 4. The etrailer.com installation video has Shane cutting the fascia twice as wide as what the instruction sheet says. The video describes cutting an opening 5 inches wide (2 1/2 inches on each side of center), where the instruction sheet diagram shows a cut 2 1/2 inches wide (1 1/4 inches on each side of center). The narrower cut matches the hitch width and looks really clean. After using a step drill for the rounded corners of the cut , I then used a sharp razor blade to trim the plastic fascia. The bumper cover was out in the sun for some time which probably softened it a bit, but the razor cut it easily and made for a very clean cut. Very happy with the results! 690728

The hitch fit perfectly. Directions were easy to follow. When the installation was complete it looked like it came from the factory. One note of patience. Take your time cutting the plastic at the bottom of the bumper. If you do it will look great. 690353

Straightforward and easy to install. Read the directions and watch the install video. Looks great on the car.....bar is hidden behind bumper which gives it a very clean look. Chose this hitch over the Curt because I didn't want to drill holes in the car frame and see the bar below the bumper. Will be using the hitch mainly for a Kuat Transfer 2 bike rack (highly recommend). 669432

I've bought about 6 hitches from etrailer and have been pleased with all of them. I did have to grind a little bit off this hitch to fit over some contours in the car body but that only took a couple of minutes. The job was completed within the 2 hours advertised. 665194

Not sure if it's the hitch or the Thule bike rack attached to it, but even without a bike attached, on some driveway entrances that are small hills, the bottom of the car scrapes on the ground. 599407

Shipping was super quick! The bumper removal is simple (YouTube it) and literally takes 5-10 min. Installed on a 17 Honda Civic Sport hatchback with dual center exhaust tips. There is no hitch options for this model so I made some modifications to the hitch to fit without disturbing the center exhaust and tucking it away nicely. I have a mill in my garage, which helps. I used a Draw-Tite receiver since the inner diameter was tighter than the Curt receiver. One thing to note...2017 and newer has a vertical piece of sheet metal that needs to be notched (black 'X' marks the spot in the pic). Best I can figure is it is for assembly or automation purposes. It is not structural as far as I could tell. 572526

This hitch is perfect! It's heavy duty yet hides the horizontal bar completely under the bumper cover! Only the receiver is visible & even that is tucked nicely under my 2016 Civic EXT. I installed it myself in around an hour & it was surprisingly easy to install. The hitch literally sandwiches between the frame & the metal inner bumper using the bolts & lockwashers provided with the hitch. I love this hitch! You will to! 325917

Ask the Experts about this Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Recommendation for Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack on 2018 Honda Civic
  • The hitch I recommend is the Draw-Tite # 24954. Between the two that fit your 2018 Honda Civic it's a much cleaner look because the cross tube is hidden behind the rear bumper. All you see sicking out is the receiver opening and the safety chain loops. It's more work to install it but it's worth it in the end. I've linked the install details for you. A great bike rack for you is the Saris Freedom EX, part # SA4412F. The rack itself only weighs 27 pounds so it's easier to handle...

The Curt hitch requires a stabilizer strap # 18050 for a bike rack, but the Draw-Tite hitch receiver does not. It is the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4" # 24954. • A trailer hitch is not going to be compatible with any 2019 Honda Civic hatchback that has a center exhaust because the hitch and exhaust would interfere with each other. If you are looking at a 2019 Honda Civic hatchback and need a trailer hitch for an accessory like a bike rack or a cargo carrier you would need to get one without a dual exhaust. That way you can use the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver # 24954 which will fit a '19 Civic without a center exhaust. I have added a link...

  • Why Does Bumper Beam of 2019 Honda Civic Need to be Trimmed to Install Draw Tite Trailer Hitch
  • Since the Draw Tite hitch part # 24954 for your 2019 Honda Civic fits between the bumper beam and the rear frame area of your vehicle it adds a bit of length to the bumper beam assembly. By that I mean the bumper beam sticks out further due to the bracket width of the hitch. So a corner of the bracket has to be taken off so that the bumper cover can fit over the beam without interference. See attached picture that I took from the install instructions. I also attached a link to the...

  • Where Does the Bumper have to be Trimmed on a 2016 Honda Civic to Install Draw-Tite Hitch 24954
  • I have included a close up picture of the area in question on a 2016 Honda Civic for trailer hitch # 24954. The instructions, linked for reference, simply state "Bumper trimming: using a die grinder remove the material shown in Figure 2. Both sides as needed." Figure 2 is the picture I have included and the area is shown with white dotted lines. The alternative is to use Curt hitch # C11463 for a coupe or # C11604 for the sedan. These hitches install differently. But with either of these...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver for 2018 Honda Civic Sedan with Dual Exhaust
  • For your 2018 Honda Civic sedan with dual exhaust, the Curt # C11604 is not a confirmed fit. The only trailer hitch receiver we have that is confirmed to fit your vehicle at this time is the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver # 24954. This is a Class I hitch that will only be compatible with Class I rated accessories. The Curt # C11604 is only confirmed to fit 2016 and 2017 models. Pour votre Honda Civic 2018 à double échappement, le Curt # C11604 n'est pas un ajustement...

  • What Bumper and Fascia Trimming is Required for Draw-Tite Class I Trailer Hitch on 2019 Honda Civic
  • Yes, I have attached a photo from the installation instructions of how the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver # 24954 looks once it is installed. According to the linked instructions you will need to slightly trim the bumper but you will also need to cut your rear fascia for the receiver to fit. I have attached clips from the instructions for both of these that you can reference as well. If you let me know what you will be using this for on the 2019 Honda Civic that you input...

  • Yes, the Draw Tite trailer hitch part # 24954 is a confirmed fit for the 2019 Honda Civic Sedan 4 door models. I attached an install video for this hitch on a similar Civic for you to check out as well.

  • Can a Bike Rack that Fits a 2 Inch Trailer Hitch be Used with a 2016 Honda Civic
  • All of the trailer hitches for the 2016 Honda Civic are going to be Class I hitches with 1-1/4 inch receivers. In order to use your 2 inch bike rack you would have to use an adapter, # HTAD. However, doing so will reduce the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch by 50 percent meaning the combined weight of the bike rack and bikes cannot exceed the reduced capacity. There are a couple of hitches that fit your Civic; Curt hitch # C11604, and Draw-Tite hitch # 24954. They install...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2016 Honda Civic and Why Can It Only Carry 2 Bikes Max
  • For your 2016 Honda Civic there are only Class I hitches available. And since they have lower capacities you can only carry up to two bikes. If you try to carry more you will damage the vehicle most likely. I had a customer come back and try to carry 3 bikes on a Class I hitch and he said the frame of his vehicle was bending and cracking. The Draw Tite part # 24954 would be the hitch for you to use as it does not require the stabilizer strap like the Curt does. I attached a picture that...

  • We confirmed with Draw Tite that the hitch part # 24954 that you referenced is a confirmed fit for your 2017 Honda Civic hatchback. There is fascia trimming required as well as some bumper beam trimming as well. I attached a picture that shows this.

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2016 Honda Civic Touring
  • For your 2016 Honda Civic Touring I recommend Draw-Tite hitch # 24954 which is listed as a fit for all styles of the 2016 Civic. If you plan on doing any towing the proper ball mount to use is # 3593. For a 1-7/8 inch ball use # 19256 and for a 2 inch ball use # 19258. And for trailer wiring you can use # 119179KIT to add a 4-Way flat connector to the rear of the vehicle. If you want to use the hitch for an accessory such as a bike rack or cargo carrier then you have to make sure...

  • Recommended Hitch for 2018 Honda Civic Hatchback LX for Bike Rack
  • The trailer hitch you want to install on your 2018 Honda Civic hatchback for carrying a bike rack is the Draw Tite part # 24954 as it does not require a stabilizer strap when carrying a non-supported load like a bike rack like the Curt equivalent does. I really like the Saris Freedom Superclamp part # SA4025F. This is a lightweight platform rack (which is normally an unheard of combo). That means it'll be easy to install and remove from your vehicle since it's light, but also it'll be...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for Carrying Bikes w/ 2016 Honda Civic Sedan
  • There are two alternatives, either of which would work fine for a bike rack carrying up to 2 bikes. The Curt Class I # C11604 is the most expensive option, and you'd need to use a stabilizing strap # 18050 for the bike rack, in order to meet Curt's warranty stipulations. The good news is that this is the easier to install option. On a scale of 1 to 10, it's rated as a 4. I've linked the installation instructions for you to look over. The Draw-Tite Class I, # 24954, is less expensive,...

  • Tool Recommendation for Trimming Rear Fascia of 2018 Honda Civic to Install Trailer Hitch
  • An air powered die grinder will give you the best cut and finish when installing the Draw Tite hitch part # 24954 on your 2018 Honda Civic Hatchback. But a dremel tool with a cutting wheel that's powered by electricity would also work too.

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2018 Honda Civic EX
  • We do have trailer hitches that are a confirmed fit for the 2018 Honda Civic EX as long as it does not have center mount exhaust. For a sedan or hatchback you'd want the part # 24954 from Draw Tite and you'd be set! For a bike rack then I really like the Saris Freedom SuperClamp part # SA4025F. This is a platform bike rack that only touches the bike at the tires and only weighs 30 lbs. The biggest drawback to platform bike racks has always been the weight of them, but with this rack...

  • Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2016 Honda Civic
  • I have a solution that will allow you to carry a bike rack for your 2016 Honda Civic that will allow you to carry bikes and won't touch any painted surfaces so you wouldn't have to worry about any damage at all. You will need to install a hitch like the part # 24954 which is a confirmed fit for all styles of the 2016 Honda Civic and then install a hitch bike rack. • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2016 Honda Civic for Carrying Bike Rack
  • The shank replacement a DoubleDown 2 would need to fit a 1-1/4 inch hitch is the part # Y8890212. Which Yakima has stated will only fit Class II hitches unlike the Class I hitches that fit your 2016 Honda Civic like the part # 24954 from Draw Tite which fits coupes and sedans. Because of that the only solution I have is a similar bike rack that is compatible with a Class I hitch. • Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2016 Honda Civic Coupe LX
  • The trailer hitch for the 2016 Honda Civic Coupe is Draw-Tite hitch # 24954. It is rated for 2,000 pounds gross trailer weight and 200 pounds tongue weight so it can handle the trailer and bike. The recommended ball mount is # 3593 and you can use 1-7/8 inch ball # 19257 or 2 inch ball # 19258. And for a trailer wiring harness use # 118724. • Trailer Hitch and E-Bike Rack Recommendation for 2017 Honda Civic
  • If you can get the weight of your bikes down to 65 lbs we have a great e-bike rack solution with the Thule EasyFold part # TH903202 as it is designed for e-bikes and can fit Class 1 hitches like what your 2017 Honda Civic hatch would have installed. It also comes with a ramp to make loading the bikes easier as well. For a trailer hitch you'd want the Draw Tite part # 24954 which does not require a stabilizer strap like the Curt hitch does. There isn't a Hollywood Racks bike rack...
