Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2015 Volkswagen Passat - Draw-Tite

Today in this 2015 Volkswagen Passat, we're going to install the Draw-Tite class 1 inch to quarter receiver hitch, part number 24880. This is what the hitch looks like when it's installed on our Passat. As you can tell, there's not much to really see. Here's our inch and a quarter receiver right here that's installed about an inch below the bottom of the bumper cover. It has some generous loops for your safety chains, it also uses a half-inch hitch pin or your favorite hitch pin lock. The receiver goes back in to here, and it has another attaching point at the trunk pan underneath, and it also goes up behind the bumper cover and clamps to the bumper structure underneath.

This is a no-drill application, however there is some minor trimming underneath the bottom of the bumper cover right here, to give room to install. It has a 200 pound tongue weight, which is the weight that pulls down on the hitch, and 2,000 pound pull weight. Always double-check your owner's manual to make sure that your vehicle is ready to pull these kinds of weights. Next I'll go ahead and give you some measurements to help you out in selecting some accessories such as a bicycle rack or a cargo carrier. From top of receiver opening down to the ground will be about ten and a quarter inches. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outside edge of the bumper will be about four inches.

Now I'll go ahead and show you how we installed the hitch. To install our hitch, we need to get inside the trunk area and remove the spare tire because there'll be some fasteners that go in the trunk pan. Spare tire tools and spare tire have to come out. Of course, all this will go back into place once we're done. Once we get down to the trunk pan, we remove these two plugs. Now let's grip it with some pliers and pulling back on it.

Now to give us some extra working room, we'll go ahead and remove this appearance panel down here. We'll be using a ten millimeter socket to remove fasteners. Now there's a friction fastener back in here you have to pull down on to release it. You may be able to just get away with it just pushing it out of the way because we just need to access up in this direction. All right, next there'll be three screws at the bottom of the trim panel here that we have to remove. We'll be using a T15 torque bit to remove them.

They're little plastic fasteners so be careful. Pull on the panel just a little bit, and pop out the rest of the fastener. Now we have to make a notch in the bottom of the inaudible 00:02:35 here, so we have room for a hitch. This fastener will be in the center of a vehicle, so put a mark on the center here and go out from each side two and a half inches. And going to the back about two and a half inches. To make your big cuts, we'll go ahead and use some tin snips, we'll use a tilding 00:02:59 knife across here. We'll score across here with the knife, and we'll break it loose. One more thing to loosen up is our exhaust right here, this just gives us more working room. There'll be two bolts we have to remove, using a 13 millimeter socket. The two places with the nuts welded on go on top of the bumper structure here of the rails coming out from the bumper. So we'll peel back the bottom of the bumper cover and push this over the top. It's pretty far up there. We need to do this on both sides of the vehicle. At this point you want to get an extra set of hands. We'll go ahead and put the hitch up in position. Then we'll go ahead and thread our long bolts in with some conical tooth washers. Always make sure that the teeth on the washer faces towards the hitch. Now if our blocks sit on top of the bumper structure right here, we're going to reach up and run our bolt through the hitch into our block and just get it started. It may be a good idea to clean up the threads before you do this as well. Make it a little easier to get started. Slowly peel the bumper cover back and push it up in there. Metal tabs that you have to kind of work it around as well. Once you have it in place, the tabs kind of help hold it up there but you still want an extra set of hands to help keep it from moving around. You can reach up and grab the block and help align it and then you can go ahead and thread in the bolt. We'll give it a few turns with a three quarter inch socket and an extension just to help make it a little more secure. Now we're not going to tighten it, but just make sure we get enough threads in there. Next up we'll go ahead and install hardware for these two holes that go through the trunk pan. We'll have to get back inside the trunk for that. The hardware we're going to install in the trunk pan will be these large blocks with the half-inch carriage bolts. They'll sit in just like that. Before we put them in permanently we'll go ahead and put some silicone around the edges here to help seal it up. One done, one to go. Now we'll go underneath the vehicle and install the remaining hardware. All right, we'll go ahead and put our panel tooth washer up, just like before, teeth facing the hitch, and then we'll install the half-inch nut. We'll do this on both sides. Now before we tighten it down for good, we still have all our hardware loose so now is a good time to make any adjustments. Make sure the hitch is centered left to right. I think once our bottom fish 00:06:00 sits level on each side, I think we'll be centered. Now we can go ahead and tighten down the hardware and torque the bolts down as best by the instructions. Once again we use our three quarter inch socket and an extension. Now we're going to tighten the bolts, going up through the bumper structure. This works like a clamp, so you want to tighten them up evenly on both sides. We have our driver's side done, one more time on the passenger side. We have our hitch installed now, and go ahead and re-install the fasteners for the bumper cover and our appearance panel right here. You'll notice this part of the bumper cover right here will come loose, which is perfectly fine. It happens when you pull down on it. You simply pop it back in to place. We'll re-install our appearance panel and the two remaining fasteners for the bumper cover. Push your bumper cover back into place, we'll put that little clip back in, and then replace the screw. That you just push in. Go ahead and re-install the fasteners for the exhaust as well. Now go ahead and re-install our interior components with the spare tire and tools and the floor cover. All right, and with that that will finish it for our install of the Draw-Tite Class 1 inch and a quarter receiver hitch, part number 24880 on this 2015 Volkswagen Passat.

The hitch is as good as expected with 2 exceptions. If you're mounting this hitch on a 2018 Passat w/Technology, it will block the trunk release sensor beneath the bumper. At present, the bolts that clamp the hitch to the frame that DrawTite ships are about 1/2" too short. However, the eTrailer customer service is outstanding. They found longer bolts and ship them right away. All is good now except for the trunk sensor. I'll live with it. 501834

2017 Volkswagen Passat

I installed this Draw-Tite hitch on my 2017 VW Passat SE by myself. The hitch is heavy and well built. I followed the instruction videos which where very helpful. My 2017 passat has a rather large plastic shroud that had to be trimmed and made the job just a bit more time consuming, but not impossible. Measuring and trimming could have been more tidy on my part but I wanted the shroud to have extra room for reinstalling. I was more precise when measuring for the two drilled holes allow the center brace bolts to fit through the shroud. Tip: Harness 117842, when unplugging the left and right wires for the trailer lighting harness, pull the red clip out the depress the locking tab to disconnect the OEM plugs. Running power from the battery was the most time consuming. 545908

Here is my review and photos: 4 stars out of 5 2018 Passat SE w/ Technology pkg. Draw-Tite 24880 I have now installed at least 6 hitches from etrailer and their products and service has been great. I see another reviewer that has a 2018 Passat SE w/ Technology where the Hands-free Easy Open trunk no longer works after installing the hitch. ONE WORD OF CAUTION, if you use the instruction and cut the lower bumper fascia 5" by 2.5" as instructed, you will cut through the electronics unless you drop the bumper fascia and separate the wiring from the fascia, and relocate the wiring before cutting the fascia. After I relocated the wiring harness and installed the hitch and trimmed bumper fascia, everything works and looks great. This hitch with mounting plates that go over the bumper rail is much harder and takes longer to install than a hitch that bolts into factory mounting holes or welded nuts, but what are you to do if you own a 2018 VW Passat. I have photos of the care needed when cutting the lower bumper fascia to avoid cutting the wire harness for the Technology package. For the fascia to clear the hitch and reach the factory mounting holes, I had to cut the fascia 6" wide to fir around the "drop-down". You can see it in the last two photos. Thanks for all your help and great products, 629117

I received my new Trailer Hitch from etrailer, I got busy and had it Bolted in place in no time at all, I got it back together quickly and hitched up the trailer and went for a test drive, it done great job, it was quick and easy to install, and recommend the folks at etrailer to handle towing supplies, and Noah was very helpful in getting the right stuff I needed to complete my project. 679007

This works well, and was easy to install, but on the Passat it hangs low and is located outboard the bumper. This causes frequent dragging on medium slopes in roads and driveways. Unfortunately many places i visit have slope transitions and I drag the hitch regularly unless I cross the transition diagonally. I had originally bought it to mount a bike hitch, but I have had an issue finding one that will not increase the tendency to drag at an affordable price (many are long and low). 546114

I purchased ta hitch for my Passat so I could use a tray-style bicycle rack, and I chose this specific hitch because it doesn't require stabilizing straps. The hitch has performed well over the last year, with only minor surface rust. It's mostly unobtrusive appearance-wise, but it tends to scrape frequently on steep driveways. All-in-all, it's a solid choice for a hitch that hasn't caused me any headaches. 488184

My son and I installed the hitch today. By far the biggest challenge was the lower fascia. We were not able to undo the clips as was sort of shown in the videos and instructions, we were able to install without removing the fascia. Once the screws are removed there is a good bit of play and you can pull the fascia away from the car to get access. The videos and instructions make it look like you just pop a screw driver in and you can release the fascia. Maybe I missed something but there really is not much room to access the clips holding the fascia in place. Basic steps we took: • Drove car up a couple Race Ramps I borrowed from a neighbor. Those things are awesome! A lot safer than my old school metal ramps. • Pulled the plugs from the trunk with a pair of pliers. No need to use a razor to cut out as was shown in a couple videos. • Removed two exhaust bolts so we could push the exhaust to the side when installing the long bolts. No need to remove the exhaust from the hanger . • Removed the three screws that secured the fascia to the bumper. • Removed three other screws on the passenger side to allow more movement of the fascia. • My son helped me lift and slip the hitch in place. We had to pull the fascia back to get the hitch in place. • Loosely secured the two bolts through the trunk then used a jack to raise the hitch so it was flush with the bottom of the bumper rails. The hitch needed to be more or less flush otherwise the bolts would not reach the nuts on the plate. • Securing the plate on the driver side fairly easy. • Securing the plate on the passenger side was more difficult. To help the bolt reach the nut we used an 8” socket extension, put the bolt in a socket and then fished it up to the nut. • Once all six bolts were connected to the nuts we tightened everything up. • I also put some sealant around the bolts in the trunk. It took a bit of effort to install; having done it once next time would be a lot easier. It looks like the hitch will meet my needs nicely! Glad I got it. 462199

Comments
My satisfaction with the hitch has not changed one bit through my use. I bought it for the purpose of a bike rack and it has worked splendidly. I have no intention to use it as a towing hitch. For towing I might have some concern over the vehicle VW Passat connections, but for my purposes, it has done exactly what I bought it to do.

We have a hitch that is confirmed to fit for the 2017 Volkswagen Passat R-Line, but the Draw-Tite Hitch # 24880 is not confirmed to fit this model Passat. • How to Determine Towing Capacity of 2018 VW Passat
The best way to determine what your vehicle can tow is by looking at its owner's manual. Unfortunately, VW manuals are hard to find online unless you own the car already so I don't have a way to look at it for you. From the research I did it seems that the max towing capacity of your 2018 Passat is 1,000 pounds which sounds pretty likely. I recommend checking your manual to be certain though. Once you know how much you can tow you'll need the parts to do it. The hitch I recommend...

I attached a video that shows exactly how it is used typically. • How to Find Out if a 2016 Volkswagen Passat SE has a Towing Capacity and How Much It Is
If your 2016 Volkswagen Passat SE has a towing capacity it would be listed in the vehicle owner's manual. Volkswagen used to provide access to the owner's manuals online but now in order to view the manual online you have to put in a valid VIN for that vehicle. But your owner's manual would be the place to check for towing information. If you decide to go with Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 24880 the recommended ball mount is # 3590. For a compatible ball you can use # 19256 for a 1-7/8 inch...

  • Does Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Require Stabilization Strap for Bike Rack on 2013 VW Passat Diesel
The Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 24880 for the 2013 Volkswagen Passat diesel does NOT require the use of a stabilization strap when carrying non-trailer loads such as a bike rack. You will need a bike rack that is compatible with a Class I trailer hitch and you will be limited to 2 bikes maximum with any Class I hitch. If you need a bike rack I recommend the Swagman Titan, # S63400. It is Class I compatible, holds 2 bikes, it can tilt down, and it comes with an integrated cable lock. The...

The stop punched into the receiver tube is 1-5/8 inches rearward from the center of the hitch pin hole or 3-7/8 inches rearward from the front of the receiver tube (see photo). The stop will prevent use of an adapter meant for the higher weight rated Class II receiver. The Brophy Hitch Adapter we offer, part # HTAD is compatible with Class I receivers and would work with the # 24880. The distance from the center of the hitch pin hole in the shank to the end of the shank is 1-1/2 inches. Keep...

The recommended hitch for your 2015 Volkswagen Passat TDI like the # 24880 is a Class I hitch that have a 2,000 lb total trailer capacity with a 200 lb tongue weight capacity. • Recommended Hitch and Towing Accessories for 2019 Volkswagen Passat
For what you're using the hitch for, you'd be fine with a low-cost option such as the Draw-Tite Class I receiver, part # 24880 but if you were planning on also using the hitch as a mounting location for a bike rack or a cargo carrying tray, you might be better off going with a 2 inch receiver like what would be provided by the EcoHitch # 306-X7317. There are many more accessory options that are compatible with a 2 inch receiver, so if you were going to use the hitch for something other...
