Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2017 Toyota Tacoma - Curt

Speaker 1: Today in our 2017 Toyota Tacoma, we're going to be installing the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number C13264.This class three hitch is going to be ideal for all of your hauling needs. You're going to be able to haul trailers, bike racks, cargo carriers and many other accessories. It has a two inch receiver tube with a reinforced collar. It is a 5/8 inch hitch pin hole, one is not included with this hitch but can be picked up here at etrailer.com with part number PC3. It features a loop style safety chain hook with a wide opening in the middle. This is going to be easy access for your safety chains, and it's going to work with numerous types and varying sizes. With it fully installed, it's going to be tucked up nicely underneath the bumper, so you're really only going to see the receiving tube here, so it won't detract from the look of your truck.

It has a 900 pound tongue weight and this is the maximum downward pressure that can be supported in a 6,000 pound gross trailer weight and this is the hauling capacity behind the vehicle. Now when using a weight distribution system, it's going to remain with a 900 pound tongue weight capacity. But your gross trailer weight is going to increase to 8,000 pounds. Now you do want to check the vehicle's owner's manual to ensure that you can haul those loads. To help you when deciding on accessories such as ball mounts, bike racks and cargo carriers, I've got some measurements for you. From the center of the hitch pin to the edge of the rear bumper, it's going to be about five inches. From the top inside edge of the receiving tube to the ground, it's going to be about 19.5 inches. Before we install our hitch, we want to do a little preparation on our vehicle.

There's four weld nuts on your frame, two on each side. We're going to clean those out so that way we don't have any galling or binding when we're putting our bolts in. Use some spray lubricant on the weld nuts and then you can use a bristled brush. One like this can be found at etrailer.com with part number 814092. Repeat this on the other side. We're going to feed out carriage bolts through now.

The bumper tube in the back has a center hole. We're going to be feeding through the holes just on the outside of that center hole. So starting on the driver's side hole, we're going to use our coiled-in first and feed it down the end of the bumper tube. Once it's come out on the other end, we can slide on our spacer and then thread on our carriage bolt. Now we can feed them back through.

You may need to use your pinky to kind of line it up right. Now before you can pull it through, you're going to need to push your spacer up and start your carriage bolt through the spacer first. That way you have enough clearance to pull the bolt through the hole. Now you're going to repeat this same process on the other side. We've grabbed an extra set of hands to help us put our hitch into place. You'll feed you're carriage bolt fish wire and then we'll lift it into place. Once you've got your hitch up into place, take your hex head bolt and conical tooth washer with teeth facing up and then thread it into your weld nut. Once you get one started on both sides, the hitch will hold itself up into place. Once you've got one sided on each side, go ahead and finish installing your hardware. They'll be two hex heads on each side that go into your weld nuts. Now before we install our carriage bolt nuts, let's go ahead and tighten these down that way it'll draw it up and make those easier to install. We'll use a 19 mm socket to snug those down. Now we can take off our fish wire and thread on our lock nut with the ridged edge facing towards the hitch. Do this for both your carriage bolts. Now go back and finish tightening down your hardware. You'll still use your 19 mm socket. Now the bolt's right above the hitch tube maybe you'll be able to get a socket on, so you may have to use a wrench to tighten those down. Now that they're all snug, we can go back and torque 'em to the specifications in your instructions. For the one about the hitch here, you'll need to use a shallow 19 mm socket. Now you repeat this for all your remaining hardware. That completes our installation of the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver on our 2017 Toyota Tacoma.

Went in easy and has given me no problems. Only difficult part was finding a large enough torque wrench for the install. 508418

I am still very pleased with it. Particularly after being rear-ended and having the hitch punch a hole through the guys bumper rather than doing any damage to my vehicle.

Well packed and speedily shipped; no loose hardware! Installation instructions imply starting the fish wire at the outside end, but it works better from the target hole toward the middle. Also, I threaded the wire fully onto the bolt for security, and the result was that it was impossible to tip the bolt into the hole. After threading just to the last wire coil, the bolt tipped easily. Instructions implied that the outside nuts were imperial size, but they seemed to be the same metric size as the other bolts, which was convenient. To my 77 year old surprise, I was able to lift the hitch into place, following the fish wires up, removing the wires and starting the nuts which held the hitch in place allowing completion of the installation. I applied anti-seize compound to facilitate future removal if necessary. The result is extremely functional, secure, good looking, and more than satisfactory. Thanks. 581935

This Curt Hitch Receiver fit great, bolt holes lined up perfectly, bolts threaded into the frame nicely :-) Make it easier on yourself....(initially I did not) let your spare tire down so you have more room to work plus it makes things faster...your choice :-) Watch the video and read the instructions to see how you use the bumper bolt threading wires and relax ( one bolt went in in 15 seconds and the other one took me 10 minutes.) I used my floor jack to position the hitch receiver and lift it to the Tacoma Frame and the Curt hitch receiver lined up/fit great and all the bolts threaded into the frame without any issues at all. The only minor issue I had was/is tightening the four frame bolts to specs . My 18" long torque wrench only goes to 75 ft/lbs and finding good leverage for that under the Tacoma took a little time for me. You might/will have to let your spare tire down to tighten those four spec'd frame bolts :-) So what did I do about the torque on those four spec'd frame bolts ? well...I'm 5'-6" and 150 lbs so I jammed myself into various positions under the truck and tightened those pesky spec frame bolts until my 18 inch long torque wrench would not turn anymore (my strength and length of the torque wrench was the limiting factor here) so they are past the 75 ft/lb of my wrench but probably not at the spec. The other two bolts were easy cause they are on the outside of the hitch..those are only spec'd for 85/ft lb and I'm sure I reached that cause I could use the bumper to pry against. Summary: Trying to tighten the frame bolts to spec under the Tacoma took me the most time , but it wasn't hard really. How long did the hitch take to install ? ...two hours total by myself and....pretty close to an hour of that was spent trying various positions under the Tacoma and figuring out how to tighten those four pesky 1 spec'd frame bolts to...in my case...almost spec. I'm going to borrow/purchase a torque wrench to finish checking all the frame bolts too...just say'n. 521409

Perfect fit. Took about an hour to install, nothing hard. Getting two bolts through a frame tube was tricky . The second one was much easier with the learning curve 519981

I installed this in about a half hour. The hardest part is fishing the two bolts through the channel. There was a bolt in the channel partly blocking the path. I had to separate the bar stock with the square hole from the bolt to get them past this point then thread them back together as they dropped into their final position. The device fit snugly in position and was easy to control while getting the bolts started by hand. I was unable to get my torque wrench on the two rearmost M12 bolts so used an open end and guesstimated the tension. Looks great, finish is nice and materials very sturdy. No regrets on this purchase. 236693

The product shipped immediately and was given the tracking number. Nothing can beat free shipping. The product by itself came in good packaging. It had all the needed bolts, nuts and washers. It also had the fish wire for fishing bolts through. Good that they added detailed instructions. Best of all, this site(etrailer.com) has a video, video is really helpful. The video shows exactly how to do it, properly(Thanks guys for making the video). I have attached the pic of how I worked on my truck. I would highly recommend this site/company. Will let my friends know. Thanks once again. SR 442093

Bought a hitch and receiver for my 2016 Tacoma. It arrived on time. The item was flawless. The service was flawless. The only caution I would provide is if you are installing this item yourself you will need a torque wrench with a swivel head to tighten the bolts directly above the receiver frame once it is mounted. This process including wiring took me an honest 3 hours. 276577

Installed this hitch this afternoon. It took a couple of hours working by myself. Overall, it it a relatively easy installation. There were a couple of "glitches" which lowered my rating to 4 stars. First, feeding the bolts and spacer through the bumper beam was harder than shown in the videos. There is a bolt inside the bumper beam which makes it tough getting the bolt past it to the proper hole. Second, the hitch was slightly damaged during shipping. One side was slightly bent, making alignment of one of the hex bolts off. Some "persuasion" with a rubber mallet got it enough that I was able to get the bolt in. Finally, I found that dropping the spare made torquing the hex bolts easier. 677072

Shipped fast, have not put it on yet, but it is a Curt hitch, so I know it will fit fine. A plus to the engineer that designed the wires to pull the bolts. That is a excellent idea. I am going to use a ATV / motorcycle Jack to lift it into place, so install Will go fast. 668124

Curt receiver hitch fits well and looks good. Definite flaw for bolts that have to be fished down through bumper. Easy fix would be to have an access hole in top of the bumper after bolts are installed supply a vinyl plug to cover the hole. 343257

  • Front and Rear Hitches for 2018 Toyota Tacoma 4WD
  • The rear-mount trailer hitch I recommend for your 2018 Tacoma is the Draw-Tite Max Frame model # 75238 which offers a substantial 7K towing capacity and 1050-lb tongue weight rating. This hitch is a simple no-drill bolt on install as shown in the linked video and the photo shows the clean appearance. It is a perfect match for the Taco's 6400-lb towing capacity. • There is one bike rack that will accommodate most of your needs and is by far the easiest to use, the Thule EasyFold XT # TH903202. This is beyond the price point you wanted, and you will not be able to clear the tailgate but since you mentioned having a bad back, and are concerned about the weight of the carrier and lifting your bikes up, as well as anchoring each bike on its own (including one with fenders), the best option for your needs truly is the EasyFold XT # TH903202. This...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for a 2018 Toyota Tacoma
  • I recommend installing the Draw-Tite Class III trailer hitch # 75238 over the Curt Class III trailer hitch # C13264 because it sits about 2" closer to the rearmost part of your bumper. This gives you more clearance for towing and using accessories. If you are going to be using it for towing you also need wiring and a ball mount kit. I recommend going with the T-One # 118685 for a 4-Way Flat connector or the Tekonsha # 22117 if you need a 7-Way connector because we have found the Tekonsha...

  • Curt Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2016 Toyota Tacoma
  • The 2016 Toyota Tacoma was changed enough from the 2015 model that an all new hitch was designed for it. I have a solution for you, but the hitch on your 2015 would not fit. Instead you would want the Curt hitch part # C13264 which has been confirmed as a fit. I attached an install video for you to check out as well. For trailer wiring you would the universal wiring kit part # C56175.

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring Recommendation for a 2016 Toyota Tacoma
  • For your 2016 Toyota Tacoma the Curt hitch part # C13264 has been confirmed as a fit. As far as trailer wiring is concerned we do not hat have any fits that would plug straight into any Toyota harnesses at this time. As of right now (Feb. 2016), we only have universal kits that would need to get hardwired to your truck's taillight wiring like the Curt # C59236. I attached a link to the trailer wiring harnesses for your vehicle though that will always have the most up to date fits as...

  • 4-Way Trailer Wiring Harness Recommendation for a 2016 Toyota Tacoma
  • The rear of your 2016 Toyota Tacoma does have a cut out for a trailer wiring connector to fit into. We have 4-ways that will fit your truck but none that would use the cut out. The Curt part # C13264 is a fit for your truck and would give you a 4-way but would require you to use a mounting bracket like the part # 18144. I attached a review video for this harness for you to check out as well.

  • Recommended 4-Way Trailer Wiring Harness for 2020 Toyota Tacoma
  • For your 2020 Toyota Tacoma I recommend the Tekonsha wiring harness, part # 118685. It has a higher maximum amperage compared to other options at basically the same price point. We generally recommend Tekonsha wiring because of their long lasting quality. To mount the 4-way use the brackets # 18144 and # C57202.
