Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2011 Subaru Outback Wagon - Curt

Today on our 2011 Subaru Outback Wagon we'll be installing Curt hitch, part number 13390. now before we begin our installation here's what your hitch will look like on the vehicle. We'll go ahead and give you a few measurements to help you with selecting accessories such as a draw bar, a bike rack, or a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer most part of the bumper is 3 1/2 inches. From the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 14 3/4 inches. Now let's go ahead with our install.

We'll need to lower the exhaust by removing the three rear most rubber isolators from the frame mounted hangers. You'll want to support the exhaust during the installation to prevent your exhaust from being damaged. Now for clarification purposes we're going to go ahead and remove the muffler from the vehicle. You will not need to do this during your installation. Now that we have our muffler out of the way you can see the heat shield here mounted to the body.

We'll need to trim this heat shield. I went ahead and drew a yellow line in the heat shield indicating where it will be cut. We'll then remove the heat shield from the vehicle and we're going to go ahead and cut it using our cut off wheel. With a little patience and a lot of time you can use a pair of tins nips to cut it just as good as I did with this cut off wheel. We'll now go ahead and reinstall the heat shield to show you what it looks like after it's been cut.

We'll now go ahead and remove the heat shield and point out the fastener locations. Now here on the passenger side of the vehicle you'll notice there are two rubber plugs. We'll go ahead and remove these plugs. The forward most plug will be our access hole that we'll use to get our hardware into the frame and the rear most hole will be the mounting location for the rear most fastener on our hitch. This is the same on the drivers side after revolving the heat shield.

Now on these access holes we'll need to open the hole up to allow us to get the fasteners in. we're going to do this with a drivel and a carbine tip grinding wheel. I went ahead and marked the hole to indicate how large we have to make it. With our access holes opened up we'll now take a fish wire, one of the carriage bolts, and the spacer block we'll feed the fish wire up through the rear most fastener point and out the access hole. We can then slide the space block on and thread the carriage bolt through the fish wire. We'll then use the fish wire and pull the spacer block and carriage bolt through the frame and out the mounting hole here. With that done on both sides we're now ready to put our hitch into position. It'll be a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch up while you start your fasteners. With the hitch up we'll go ahead and thread the nut on finger tight. Now with our hitch in position we'll make sure it's centered with the vehicle and using the hitch as a template we'll use a step drill procedure to drill the hole here for our forward most fastener. We'll need to do this on both sides of the vehicle. Now with our holes drilled we'll again use the fish wire, one of the carriage bolts, and a spacer block feeding the fish wire through the drilled hole and out the access hole here. We'll then slide on the spacer block, thread on the carriage bolt, and using the pull wire pull it through the drilled hole in the frame and through the hitch. We'll then use the nut to thread it on the carriage bolt finger tight. With that done on both sides of the vehicle our fasteners are now all installed. We can go ahead and tighten them down and torque them to specification as indicated in the instructions. Now that all our hardware is torqued to specification we can go ahead and reinstall our heat shield here on the drivers side and rehang the exhaust which will complete our installation of Curt hitch, part number 13390, on our 2011 Subaru Outback Wagon.

Product was shipped in a box that was to big. It must have bounced around during shipping and got a fairly deep scratch on it, down to the metal. I'll have to spray it with some rustolium before I install it. Aside from that it came fast with all parts. 10813

I used this kit on a 2012 Subaru Outback wagon after i got the high price for add-on from the dealer. I viewed the website video, read the instructions and installed it, but in three hours, not 90 minutes. The things i liked were the quality of hardware, good instructions, and the web video. I really liked the bolt snaking tool. The only difference between the 2011 and 2012 is that the muffler is mounted differently, so i had to figure that out myself, but it was pretty easy. The wiring instructions were very good and lead me right to the factory connector. I like the hitch, the quality of the accessory hardware, the bag, and the US flag filler. The only thing i did not like was that the instructions for drilling / enlarging the hole to fish in the bolt seemed to be for smaller bolts than mine and took more time and effort. Again though, i saved $500.00 and this is an excellent kit 33100

The hitch looks great. And by great, I mean that it is very unobtrusive but if you do notice it then you will notice how good it looks. The video instructions were incredible. I wish every product that I bought had instructions like that. The only negative was the stickers they put on the there. One on the front and one on the side. Also I'd rather see it in flat black so the hitch is even less noticeable. After installing this product on my car I can say that I am completely confident that it will outlast my car. It's a big chunk of metal. 9962

Received this hitch in perfect condition in a timely manner. Bit tricky to install but the enclosed innstructions are very clear. I was not too crazy about having to drill holes into the mainframe of a car only 3 weeks old though. Had to patch up the holes with a super quality 3m marine sealant designed for below waterline use. This was to provide a permanent moisture barrier to prevent rust from forming on the freshly cut metal edges. Had the inside rails resprayed with rustproofing compound. Overall, the entire install took me 51 minutes with basic hand tools. I was fortunate that my neighbour has a gargae and provided me with a hoist. Installing this hitch without having the car elevated would be nearly impossible. No pics, sorry. Hands way too dirty to handle a camera. Etrailer has always provided me with exceptional service. They also price matched as per their policy immediately. 11866

Just exactly as the youtube installation video said it would go. My Dad and I noted that the written instructions, hardware kit, and youtube install directions were all in perfect alignment. Excellent quality product that actually went in exactly as it was described! (shocking to us). My Dad was so impressed he's thinking of buying a hitch kit for "Grandma's SUV". Great website, great product videos, great shipping/tracking, and great product! So easy we did it right in the driveway! 681036

I purchased this hitch for our Suburu Outback to be able to tow a small camper. After making the purchase it arrived within a few days, and my son and I had installed by the end of that week. What made this easier was the video to show exactly how to install it and the wiring harness that I got with it. The only problem we had with the installation was drilling through the subframe of the car, I'm thinking sharper drill bits next time. We spent 4 days towing the camper around for a short state park vacation and I have since used it for towing u-haul trailers without any issues. A great product, and thanks to etrailer for providing such informative videos. 404728

I think this will serve my purpose. I wish to pull a 4x8 utility trailer with 4-wheeler. My son hopes the bolts are strong enough as intended. I thought the hitch would be more hidden but it will be ok as is. Less expensive than the dealership price. The wiring instructions have it going thru the back and out of the hatch door. Not a good idea so we installed wiring underneath. 49570

I just purchased a 2014 Subaru outback. I need a 2 hitch to haul my bikes. I already have a Hollywood rack that holds 4 bikes and would like to drive the outback some of the time instead of my gas guzzling Toyota Tundra. Recommendations?

I called up a couple of our manufacturers, and there is no word yet on when hitches will be available for a 2014 Outback. As soon as they do become available, we will add them to our website and they will show up in the Fit Guide. If you are in need of a hitch right away, I would imagine the dealer would have them available but they may be more costly than an aftermarket unit.

The instructional video was only fair but it installed with no problems. Good quality. Quick delivery. For the etrailer techs, instead of butchering up the frame with chisels, etc., just use a hole enlarging (conical) drill bit and you won't be left with jagged metal. 29863

Googled trailer hitch 2011 outback. Liked it, web site not working for placing the order so I called. They sent me a hitch that did not match the video I was looking at. After some confusion, I called and was told that I had ordered the wrong part, but the operator was the one who told me what part I needed. Service was bad from etrailer due to this, but they did give me the number to Curts and they were fantastic. Andy was helpful, we drilled a 1 1/8" hole instead of dilling holes by the existing hole and bending back. The dewalt holesaw was great - Lenox brand was not good. Etrailer was very quick on shipping - ordered Tuesday afternoon, got it Thursday, installed Friday. Installation took about 4 hours, but 2 hours of that was figuring that etrailer ordered the wrong hitch. Kinda glad they did, Curts is great! 18917

I was very surprised at how well built the hitch is. Very heavy. I only which Subaru would have pre-drilled holes for a hitch. SOA knows that a large part of there customers buy there vechiles for the utility factor. So to not have there vechiles pre-drilled and pre-wired is very poor on there part. 17585

This is the third Curt hitch I have purchased from etrailer.com. All have been very well made and relatively easy to install. With this one, however, I thought I might pass on a couple of recommendations. 1. The instructions which accompany the hitch show only three holes in in the frame rail. There are actually four. Using only the three shown in page 1 of the instructions actually places the hitch 4 inches forward (toward the front of the car) than it actually needs to be. Worse yet, these mounting holes (1/4" in diameter) are the exact distance apart for the hitch, so all one needs to do is enlarge them to 1/2 inch for the bolts, so it is easy to mistakenly mount the hitch in the wrong location. If one views the installation video first, it is less easy to be confused, but still possible. 2. I suggest modifying the instructions to show 4 (four) holes and advise the reader to remove the plugs on the two rear-most (on each side) holes. These are already the correct size for the bolts. Mate the two rear-most holes of the hitch with these holes and after affixing the hitch with two bolts using these holes, drill new holes on each frame rail for the other two (forward) attachment points. Continue the installation as shown in the video. I also suggest modifying the instruction document to reflect the information provided in the video - - it is correct. Thank you for a great product and for great service. 12554

Ask the Experts about this Curt Trailer Hitch

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Receiver Rise Adapter for Thule T2 Pro XT Bike Rack on Curt # 13390 Hitch
  • With your Curt # 13390 hitch, you can add an adapter like # D-192 (45792) but it will reduce the trailer hitch tongue weight capacity by 50%. This will not restrict your rack as the hitch is already rated for 600 lbs giving you a 300 lb capacity remaining. The T2 Pro 4 bike rack # TH9034XT-9036XT has a total weight capacity of 160 lbs and weighs 113 lbs, so you will still be under the hitch weight limit. This adapter is a great choice as it will raise your bike rack a little over...

The Curt Trailer Hitch # C12298 that you referenced fits a 2010 - 2014 Subaru Legacy so it won't be compatible with your 2017 model. If you like the Curt look then you would want to go with the Curt # 13390 instead which is a fit for your newer model year and has a 2" receiver. Curt does require that the stabilizer strap # 18050 be used per their warranty so if you'd...

We don't have a video showing installation on a dual exhaust model though. If you plan on doing some towing I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. I couldn't say why Curt lists it the way that they do. But given the option I would go with the Class III, # 13390, since it is a more capable and sturdy hitch that will afford you many accessory options. I recommend the Draw-Tite Class III Max Frame Receiver Hitch # 75673 for a couple of reasons. First, when compared to the Curt Class...

  • The only way to install the Curt Hitch part # 13390 is to attach it to the rear frame rails of your 2010 Subaru Outback Wagon. See the picture I attached as well as the install video.

  • Does Curt Hitch # 13390 Fit 2011 Subaru Outback 3.6R with Dual Exhaust
  • I spoke with my contact at Curt and he informed me that they have test fit a Curt Hitch # 13390 on a Subaru Outback 3.6R with a 6 cylinder and dual exhaust just like your 2011 Subaru Outback 3.6R and it fit just fine. If you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with...

  • Curt vs. Draw-Tite Hitch Selection for 2013 Subaru Outback Wagon for Use with Accessory Carriers
  • Curt is unique in requiring for their warranty coverage on certain of their hitches use of a support strap for non-trailer loads (items without wheels) such as hitch bike racks or cargo carriers. Curt products are no less well-made than others but they choose to be cautious. Other hitch makers do not have this warranty requirement but absolutely using the Curt strap # 18050 or a similar support strap item on any hitch will only help it withstand the rigors of the road. Call it cheap insurance...

  • Rear Bumper Clearance for Trailer Hitch Receiver on 2013 Subaru Outback When Using Bike Rack
  • The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # 13390 is a confirmed fit for your 2013 Subaru Outback. The center of the hitch pin hole will be 2-1/2 inches back from the outermost part of the bumper to allow compatibility with any of the bike racks we carry to fit well. For use of this hitch receiver with a bike rack, you will also need stabilizer strap # 18050 in order not to void Curt's warranty. If you do not wish to use the stabilization strap, then I recommend the Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver...

  • Trailer Hitch, Ball Mount, and Trailer Hitch Ball Recommendations for a 2011 Subaru Outback
  • Yes, the 75673 hitch will carry over and fit the 2011 model Outback. We also have the Curt Trailer Hitch, # 13390. This is a Class III trailer hitch rated at 3,500 pounds of gross trailer weight and 350 pounds tongue weight capacity, and it has a 2 inch receiver. I have included a link to the installation details below for the hitches. If you plan on doing some towing with the hitch, I recommend the etrailer.com Ball Mount Kit, # 989900. This kit comes with two ball mounts, two balls,...

  • Differneces Between Class II Hitches Offered for 2010 Subaru Outback
  • Hidden Hitch no longer manufactures the hitch for your 2010 Subaru Outback, but I will do a comparison for you. Draw-Tite and Hidden Hitch were essentially identical in style and capacity. The price of the Hidden Hitch model was higher because the hitch included the manufacturer recommended ball mount and the pin and clip used to secure the ball mount into the receiver. The Draw-Tite hitch is a quality hitch and is available in a Class II, # 36493, or Class III option, # 75673. The Curt...

  • Ground Clearance on a 2010 Subaru Outback Wagon with an EcoHitch
  • I cannot verify that the ride height will be the same between a 2010 Subaru Outback Wagon and a 2018 Subaru Outback Wagon but I can tell you that the EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 306-X7162 has a ground clearance measurement of 10-1/2" which is taken from the ground to the bottom of the trailer hitch receiver. The 2" trailer hitch we have that offers the most ground clearance is the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 13390 which measures around 12" from the the ground to...

  • Sealing Openings During Installation of Curt Trailer Hitch # 13390 On 2012 Subaru Outback Wagon
  • It is not a requirement to fill any holes created during the installation of the Curt Class III 2-Inch Trailer Hitch # 13390 on your 2012 Subaru Outback Wagon. The bolts will be tight enough when the hitch is installed to maintain a tight seal. If you would like to seal the holes, you can use spray paint or aerosol undercoat to spray the bare metal prior to attaching the hitch. You would need to let the spray dry before hitch installation. I have provided links to the installation...

  • Which Curt Class III Hitch Fits 2013 Subaru Outback Wagon
  • Curt has a very similar hitch to the # 13206 that DOES fit your 2013 Subaru Outback Wagon with the part # 13390 but the # 13206 does not fit your vehicle so it would not be what you'd want. For a more concealed trailer hitch option we have the Curt # C13410 which only has the hitch opening hanging below the rear bumper which gives it more of a concealed look.

  • Fixing Excessive Sway when Using Curt Trailer Hitch 13390 on a 2012 Subaru Outback
  • I am not sure what you mean. The hitch itself should not be swaying at all. If you are talking about trailer sway while towing then the aerodynamic differences between the vehicles could the reason for the trailer to sway more with one vehicle than another. You would only need a friction sway bar, # 83660, and ball mount bracket # RP26003 for 2 inch hitches to stop the sway. If you have a bike rack or cargo carrier with excessive movement then a simple anti-rattle device such as # 93347...

  • 5 Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2013 Subaru Outback Wagon With Curt Hitch
  • I checked your order notes and you installed the Curt Hitch part # 13390 on your 2013 Subaru Outback Wagon which can carry a 5 bike rack. You should note that Curt requires the use of a stabilizer strap like part # 18050 with this hitch when carrying a non-supported load like a bike rack. I recommend the Yakima FullTilt 5-Bike Rack, part # Y02463. This rack holds 5 bikes and has a cable lock that secures the bikes to the carrier. This is a tilting rack that allows you access to the...
