Have you ever hit a bump while towing and had that road shock jostle and shake you all the way down to your bones? It's a common feeling. Most ball mounts are made almost completely of metal, so there's nothing to help soften the shock when you hit a bump. This results in a bumpy, jerky ride that not only takes a toll on you as you drive, but it beats up your equipment too, leading to premature wear and tear on both your truck and trailer.


Fortunately, the Shocker Hitch HD Air will change all that.


Air Bag and Bumper Stop Shock Absorption Technology

Shocker Hitch Air Bag

Using a built-in air bag and rubber cushions, the Shocker Hitch HD Air acts like a small suspension system between your truck and trailer. The air bag and bumpers help absorb road shock, creating a smoother, more comfortable ride while also protecting your truck and trailer from unnecessary wear and tear on the brakes, chassis, trailer frame, and suspensions.

The body of the Shocker Hitch HD Air is designed to pivot back and forth on the shank, kind of like a seesaw or teeter totter, as the air bag, which sits directly beneath your truck's receiver, and the cushioned bumpers take turns absorbing the road shock.

When you hit a bump and your trailer bounces, the unit pivots so that the air bag can isolate and absorb the energy. When your trailer jerks forward or backward, the 2 cushioned bumper stops help soften the force.

Using the easily accessible air valve on the side of the unit, you can adjust the air pressure in the Shocker Hitch Air's air bag to best accommodate your trailer's load. Finding the right pressure for your setup is simple. Once you've hooked up your trailer and the tongue weight is pushing down on the hitch ball, there will be a gap between the top of the adjustable channel and bumper.

Inflate the air bag until the bumper rests flush against the top of the hitch. Once the gap is gone, you'll know the air bag has the appropriate amount of air pressure for your load.


If you happen to get stuck in a situation where you're unable to inflate the bag, there's no need to worry; you can still tow your trailer. Without the inflated air bag, you won't get the full benefit of the Shocker Hitch HD Air, but you'll still get some built-in cushion with the bumper stops.

How to Adjust Shocker Hitch Height

Adjusting the height of the hitch ball to accommodate for a different trailer takes almost no time at all. Just unclip the adjustment pins and grab the easy-to-grasp handles to remove them. Then slide the ball platform up or down to the desired position. You can also flip the platform depending on whether you need the 2" or 2-5/16" ball. Once you have the correct height and ball size, reinsert the pins and secure the clips, and fold back the handles so they're out of the way. Then you're ready to go.

Video Transcript for Shocker HD Combination Ball Mount Air Receiver Hitch Review

Hey guys, it's Jake here with etrailer. Today we're going to be taking a look at the Shocker Hitch HD Ball Mount. There's going to be a ball mount that mounts into the receiver tube on your truck. So here you'll see three different clips of three different PSIs. On the left we have 30 PSI, in the middle, we have 50 PSI and on the right, we have 60 PSI. The 30 PSI was not enough to be able to absorb the shock from the weight of our trailer.

So you can see how it continues to bounce and recoil, after you hit a bump. The 60 PSI was too stiff. So when you hit a bump, there was hardly no change from a standard ball mount. Now 50 PSI was just right for the weight of our trailer, which was about 15,000 pounds. What it did was it- The air spring was enough to absorb the shock from a bump that we would hit.

And the bumper was enough- It was tight enough to be able to stop it from recoiling. And that's why it's important to adjust your air pressure in your bag to whatever trailer you're hauling. That's what's going to give you the best ride quality that you can get out of this ball mount. It's going to have a two and a half inch shank. So it's going to be designed for those heavier duty trucks.

It's going to be rated for 16,000 pounds. Obviously you can see the thing that will stand out most, compared to other standard ball mounts, is it is going to feature an airbag. With this one, what it's going to do is it's going to alleviate a lot of that unneeded stress on your hitch, your trailer, the tongue of your trailer, your equipment. It's going to be a much smoother ride when you're headed down the road, going to a job site. If you're pulling a race trailer, it'll be good for those applications too, because then your trailer is going to be nice and steady all the way there.

Now, what we need to do is we need to air up our bag to the right specifications for the weight of our trailer. Here we just have a portable air compressor, which I highly recommend, especially if you're going to look into getting one of these ball mounts, because if you're out on the road and you don't have the right air pressure in it, this little air compressor is going to be able to get your bags set to the right PSI because otherwise the ball mount's not going to work how it's supposed to. So we'll start by taking off our stem valve cap. Always set that in the same place so you don't lose it. And we'll take our air hose, screw it onto the stem valve. Now, if you have one that screws onto it, you will see a little bit of air pressure coming out. If you have some in it, if you're just using your- Like an air chuck that's at your house, you'll just hit it with it right away. Right now that we have that connected, now you see up here, we have about a half inch of space in between this bumper block here. And the top of our- The backside of our ball Mount here, this space needs to be completely taken up. And this bumper needs to be compressed about an eighth of an inch. so our air compressors is on. You can see that gap closing. We'll see this start to compress. You can kind of watch this space too. All right. Shut it off. And you can see here that our bumper has compressed an eighth of an inch. So now we can unhook our air hose. And now we know that we've got it set to the right PSI. Our ball-mount is going to be adjustable by four inches total. So you can see here, our top pin can go all the way up here to the top and they're adjustable in one inch increments. So you can fine tune it to fit the truck that you're pulling the trailer with. Down here, you'll see our air fitting to be able to air up our air bag. you just twist this cap off. And one thing I really liked about this cap, rather than it just being a standard cap. If you ever need to let a little bit of air pressure out of your bags, you just take it, flip it over. There's that little bitty button on it. And you can let some of the air out without having to go get another tool or anything like that to let the air out. Now one thing that I like about this ball Mount, that's going to be reassuring for me when I'm hauling a trailer, is that the part that you see that's red here. That's going to be three eighths of an inch thick, and we can show you here. It's three eighths of an inch thick. And then up here on the actual shank side of it, that's going to be a quarter inch thick. So you're not going to have to worry about the actual metal part of it failing on you. Because it is going to be a very very heavy construction. I'm down here in the bottom, on the ball Mount side. And we'll take this trailer off in a little bit to show you in more detail but you can see too the sheer thickness of this metal. This is also going to be an inch or three eighth inch thick . The welds all look really good on here, very thick weld. So again, going to hold up for a very long time. The ball Mount portion itself is going to have a coating to help prevent rust and corrosion over time. So that's going to last you for a long time. Another nice part about this ball Mount is, compared to a lot of other ball mounts. The pins are actually going to have these handles on them. You flip them out so that you can pull your pins out. The standard style pin is- This one even has a little bit of a knob on the end you can see that you pull to pull the pin out, but it can get more and more difficult as the ball Mount gets older, especially if you leave it on your truck, but this is going to give you a nice large area. I can fit about three fingers to be able to pull that pin out, to adjust the ball Mount up and down. As far as maintenance goes, you're going to have a grease cirque here on the passenger of the ball Mount. And what that's for is there's a joint on the inside. Obviously this ball Mount has to pivot when it's bouncing against this airbag here. So it's a nice, easy point to where you can grease that. A couple of times a year, just hit it with some grease so that your ball Mount operates properly. One other thing that I really like about this, that you really don't pay attention to, but they put protecting tabs on a lot of different things. Now, this one here, this tab is here so that this doesn't spin, but it also protects it. If you have anything that's laying over top of it, it's going to protect it on the top side. And over here on our driver's side, you can see there's a triangular shaped safety plate to protect our inflation valve so that our safety chains don't come in contact with it. If you need to change out the ball for the two inch ball or vice versa, what you do is you just pull these pins, nice, large finger grips there. It's just a standard size clip. Pull these pins out, flip this whole thing over, and then you can slide it anywhere in this mount that you need. Lets just put it back where we had it before. So you can see how useful those, those large grips on the pins are to be able to pull these out. Under here, you'll notice this block. This block is designed to push up on the bottom of this hitch, to be able to give you that point of contact so that the ball Mount has something to press against. So there's going to be certain applications in which you have to use this and certain applications in which you don't. In our case here, we have a Dodge truck, a later model year, we have a 13 Dodge, and this is one of the ones that actually requires this block. So to get it in place, all you have to do is take these two screws out, see here, there'll be a bolt there and a bolt here on the other side, you just take those out and place that block into place. So all in all, I think it's going to be a great ball Mount for many different applications. Obviously it's going to be great for heavy hauling, but I think it's going to do a great job for the lighter applications too. Again, great for race trailers. If you own a lawn business, it's going to be good for those trailers to haul all of those lawn mowers you don't want banging around in your trailer. My personal opinion, I think it looks really cool in the back of your truck because it's just so large in size. Other than that, that's going to do it for a look at the shocker hitch HD ball mount.
