How to Use Tekonsha Voyager iD

Power output: To get more power output - the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes - rotate the knob clockwise. To decrease the power output, rotate it counterclockwise.

Manual override: To engage manual override, simply press the knob. This will activate the trailer's brakes and brake lights independent of your tow vehicle, great for stopping sway or controlling your trailer's momentum in an emergency. The Voyager iD will reach the maximum set power in half a second.

How to Install Tekonsha Voyager iD

The Voyager comes in 2 pieces: the main unit and the control knob.

Tekonsha Voyager iD Installed

The control knob can be installed in any convenient spot that's easy for you to see and access. This can be a blank switch panel, an open spot on your center console, or wherever there's space on your dashboard. Before you do any drilling, be sure there's enough clearance behind the dash for the entire knob to install!

Once you've decided where you want to put the control knob, you'll need to find a good place to install the main unit. It needs to be horizontally level and parallel to the direction of travel within 20 degrees. A mounting kit with hardware is included.

Tekonsha Voyager iD Plug In Wiring Harness for Vehicle

This kit comes with a vehicle-specific wiring harness that plugs right into the factory port under the driver's seat of your vehicle. That means no hardwiring!

You will also need a circuit breaker kit to complete your installation:

  • 20-Amp circuit breaker (9506P - sold separately) for 1 or 2 axles
  • 30-Amp circuit breaker (38630 - sold separately) for 3 axles

Note: If you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle, take a look at our exclusive 7- and 4-way brake-control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately).

What is Proportional Braking?

What is proportional Braking

Proportional braking means that your trailer brakes mimic your tow vehicle's brakes. If you slam on the brakes in your vehicle, your trailer brakes will activate with the same intensity; if you brake lightly, your trailer brakes lightly too. The trailer's braking is in proportion to your vehicle's braking. This saves wear and tear on the tires and the brakes on both your vehicle and trailer.

The Voyager iD uses an internal inertia sensor to sense how your vehicle is braking so it can send the right amount of braking power to your trailer. It measures the inertia of your tow vehicle and activates the trailer's brakes to slow at the same rate. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

Video Transcript for Tekonsha Custom Wiring Adapter for Trailer Brake Controllers Spec Review

Hello neighbors, it's Brad here at etrailer. And today we're taking a look at the Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter for sprinter vans. Now, it's important you're gonna wanna use the fit guide to make sure that you have the specific model of sprinter to make sure that this plug works. But once it's plugged in and you know that you have a confirmed fit, it's going to be nice and easy to actually plug this into your factory tow package. So under the driver's seat, you're gonna see a green clip and you have factory plug that meets to that. And you just simply run the other end to your brake controller.

Now, this is going to be an awesome option in making a brake controller install nice and easy on the sprinter, by allowing you to just plug into the factory tow package. And then this end is gonna go into your brake controller pretty easy. And this is gonna work on trailer mates, draw tights as well as Tekonsha brake controllers. As you can see once we plugged it in, our brake controller came to life and it's ready to go. So all that's left is to mount this where we want it and hook up our trailer and get to towing.

And that was a look at the Tekonsha Brake Controller Wiring Adapter for a sprinter van..

Easy install simple setup

by:

Everything worked as it should! Very happy with the look as well

by:

The install was pretty simple. It took some time to modify the knock out plug to conceal the adjustment knob but after a bit of work it fit nicely and looks like it’s supposed to be there. I missed a photo of the final mont of the control unit but I was able to install the supplied clip for the module just above the airbag. There is a clip that holds the wire for the computer input so I removed it for extra space and secured the wire with a zip tie.

by:

Easy install. I used the cable harness that came with my 22 Silverado. Hardest part was just locating a place on the dash for the knob and access from behind for the 2 inches or so length of the switch assembly. Small and looks good on the dash.

Price, Delivery & Customer Service was the best!

by:

I chose this Tekonsha Voyager ID for installation in my Audi SQ7 ecause Tekonsha has a great reputation for brake controllers when used with Airstreams. The brakes are easy to dial in and once you get it, the control at both high and low speed is perfect. A Redarc controller I used on a previous tow vehicle struggled to find a good balance. Tekonsha has this nailed. I love that I don’t have to mount a box beneath the dash and that the control is easy to reach, not ever in my way and easy to adjust. Perfect!

by:

I wanted it to look like it belonged. Took a bit of fabrication but I think it turned out pretty good. 2010 Cadillac Escalade EXT

by:

Had to file the bracket down to get it to slide in to the unit. Was able to get the control knob to fit into the dash in the removable card holder. 2022 Chevy, Colorado Z 71.

by:

Was easy(ish) to install in me 2015 Jeep Wrangle Unlimited. Placed the main unit behind the glove compartment using the supplied bracket and the dash knob down near the passenger footwell. There isn't enough length of wire to get the knob to the driver's side in this configuration, but putting the main unit on that side while remaining hidden is a major pain, especially with the upgraded sound system. Used it a few times already, and the adjustability is excellent, it goes from almost imperceptible to locking up the brakes at maximum pretty quickly on the same road. It will serve you well no matter what trailer you are using.

by:

This brake controller was so simple to install with help from etrailer.
It unit operats the electric brakes on my trailer great and I love that I can adjust the braking power from inside my motorhome.

by:

Worked perfectly on my 2024 Sprinter 2500 Van

by:

Works great, following instructions and installed the trailer controller. Not all defaclut to install and the hardest thing was getting a 66 Year old kid in position to install it under the dash! I don’t bend as easy as I use too.

by:

I really like it so far. It was easy to install and it has an excellent response to braking. I installed it on my 2023 Mercedes/Coachmen motorhome that pulls a car trailer with a Jeep on board. In my test run this week it has worked great. Leaving soon for two weeks traveling south and will let you know how it works on the long haul.

by:

As all Tekonsha products, this unit works very well. Easy to install and understand how it functions.

by:

came with everything needed to install, liked the sleek one button control.

by:

In case my first review posts, after an unsuccessful online chat with someone at etrailer, I called them and spoke with a very nice and knowledgeable man (unfortunately I didn’t catch his name). He walked me through the subtle differences between the 2nd generation Sprinter van 7-way factory plug and the 3rd (current) generation van which I have and via telephone I was able to get the Tekonsha adapter harness connected. Thanks etrailer!

by:

This harness fits more years than noted, so long as you have the green factory connector under the driver seat. I thought shipping this item would take several weeks but E-Trailer had it out in just a couple days. A quality product that worked perfectly and was easily installed.

by:

Easy to install and it works great.

by:

This made connecting my me REDARC Brake Controller easier than hard wiring.

by:

It's always a great day when you can plug and play! No cutting or splicing wire with this kit. Works great!

by:

This product was supposed to eliminate any splicing of wires in my vehicle and the braking unit I purchased but does not. I will need to cut off one end and splice to the connector that came witht he braking unit. It maybe that this is not a standard connection but this cable was sold as a connection between the two. I do appreciate having the "pigtail" to the vehicles prewired connection.

by:

Installed this in my 2020 Winnebago View (a 2019 MB Sprinter cassis and cab). I'm using it with a Brake Buddy Stealth controller. Routing it to the dash has a chore, but there are how-to videos on [online]. Most will simply lop off the Tekonsha connector and splice it directly to the pigtail wires on the Stealth controller. I chose, instead, to purchase a mating connector and add THAT to my controller, making the setup compatible with other popular controllers and removable without cutting wires. The Sprinter is pre-wired to "always hot" positive power, which means that you will always have power to the controller and a drain on your battery during storage. You can pull the fuse (in the panel under the driver's seat) or, as I chose to do, wire in a cutoff switch on the dash.

by:

Hello Alex. I appreciate the follow-up on my brake controller and wiring for my Sprinter van. The wiring was plug and play. It was s little difficult running the wires, but I got it. Again the wiring was plug and play along with the brake controller. I plugged it in and it immediately worked. I haven't towed the trailer with it yet, but will soon. Thanks again for the information on what to buy. You made the project so much easier.

Works as advertised.
