One-Step Installation

The Curt Echo is unique for its plug-and-play installation. With no wiring, modules, or knobs to install, setting up the Echo is a breeze.

Curt Echo Wireless Brake Controller Installation

The main unit plugs into the 7-way at the rear of your Subaru Forester and provides a port for plugging in your 7-way trailer connector. Use the included strap, found inside the cap, to secure the Echo in place. It will help ensure a constant connection between Subaru Forester and trailer.

That done, download the OneControl app on your Apple or Android smartphone and wirelessly pair the unit to your phone via Bluetooth, following the in-app instructions. It should take about 5 seconds for them to pair. Once paired, the LED light on the unit will turn a solid blue. Plug in your trailer's 7-way and let the whole system calibrate for another 5 seconds. When the LED turns green, configure your desired trailer brake settings in the app and save it as a profile. Then you're ready to tow!

Note: See etrailer.com's exclusive 7-way upgrade kit for brake controller installation (ETBC7L - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your Subaru Forester.

Control Your Towing with Your Smartphone and an App

Besides the crazy-easy installation, the Echo is unique for giving you control of your towing through your smartphone. You can set the maximum braking output, adjust the braking sensitivity, apply the manual override - all from the OneControl app.

Completely wireless, the Echo connects to the app via Bluetooth. You can save multiple towing profiles in the app, a big plus if you have a fleet and want to be able to just select a pre-set configuration and get towing. And don't worry; after you've downloaded the app, you don't need to have data on to use the app with the brake controller. You'll be able to receive calls and texts and access your other apps.

User-Friendly OneControl App

Simple, intuitive, and user-friendly, the OneControl App makes it wicked easy to manage your settings and control your trailer.

how does the One Control app work

1. Manual Override

This big orange button in the middle of the app is your manual override. Press and hold the button, and the brake controller will smoothly apply the trailer brakes without applying your Subaru Forester's brakes. This is perfect for stopping sway or controlling your trailer's momentum in an emergency.

Curt Echo App Manual Override Button

Quick tip: Put manual override right at your fingertips by adding this button (C83HR - sold separately) to your dash. The app must be running for the button to work, but it can be in the background while you use other apps on your phone. The button has an adhesive pad for a quick-stick installation and includes an easily replaceable battery.

2. Brake Output Indicator

The outer ring gives you a visual indicator of how much power is being applied to the trailer brakes. This is determined by your max output setting.

3. Max Output

Braking output is the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. How much braking output you need is determined by the weight of your trailer; a heavier trailer will need more power to bring it to a stop.

To set your maximum braking output, tap this button and increase or decrease using the + and - buttons. You want to set the braking output as high as you can without locking up the brakes. Once you've set up the brake controller the first time, you shouldn't need to adjust the settings until the trailer load changes, you switch trailers, or road conditions change.

4. Sensitivity Level

This controls the aggressiveness of your trailer's braking, meaning how quickly the brakes reach the max output level. This is a great adjustment to make when you're towing a heavy load and the trailer will need more umph to bring it to a stop so it doesn't push your Subaru Forester forward.

Just like max output, if you need to change your sensitivity level, use the + and - buttons. If your Subaru Forester takes too long to come to a stop, increase the setting. If it stops too abruptly, lower the setting. You may also need to adjust the sensitivity based on your own preferences, or when the trailer load or road conditions change.

5. Subaru Forester Hazard Lights

If you turn on your Subaru Forester's hazard lights, there's a chance the trailer brakes will pulse on and off as the lights flash. Turn this setting on any time you activate your hazard lights to prevent this problem.

Save Multiple Trailer Profiles

Curt Echo App saves multiple trailer profiles

Get on the road faster by saving your settings. With the app, you can add and store multiple profiles for both trailers and Subaru Foresters so that your preferred settings will be ready to go as soon as you hook up. This is perfect if you own a fleet and don't want to have to reset the controller every time you swap out trucks, trailers, or drivers. You'll have the ideal settings saved and waiting for you. To switch between profiles, just swipe left or right.

OneControl: One-Stop App for Towing

If you like the idea of monitoring your trailer from your phone, the other OneControl systems could be a great fit for you.

The Curt True Course (C94VV - sold separately) is an advanced Bluetooth sway control system that automatically triggers the trailer brakes (independent of the Subaru Forester's brakes and the brake controller) when it detects dangerous trailer movement. The Curt Tire Linc (C54VV - sold separately) Bluetooth TPMS monitors the temperature and pressure of your trailer tires. All of these systems use the OneControl app so you can manage all of them in the same place on your phone.

LED Status Indicator

troubleshooting Echo brake controller

The LED indicator light on the top of the plug-in module will show you when the brake controller is connected. You can also check the LED for simple diagnostics when you need to troubleshoot.

Weatherproof Construction

Is the Curt Echo weatherproof

Because the Echo mounts outside the Subaru Forester, it's designed for maximum weather resistance. The unit is filled with an epoxy resin that seals off the internal components from moisture and the elements. The Echo also has a soft locking tab for connecting to your 7-way plug that reduces vibration and helps ensure a constant connection.

Proportional Braking

What is proportional Braking

The Curt Echo brake controller comes equipped with proportional braking to give you the best towing experience. Proportional braking means that your trailer brakes mimic your tow Subaru Forester's brakes. If you slam on the brakes in your Subaru Forester, your trailer brakes will activate with the same intensity; if you brake lightly, your trailer brakes lightly too. The trailer's braking is in proportion to your Subaru Forester's braking. This saves wear and tear on the tires and the brakes on both your Subaru Forester and trailer.

The Echo uses an internal 3-axis accelerometer to sense how your Subaru Forester is braking so it can send the right amount of braking power to your trailer. It measures the inertia of your tow Subaru Forester and activates the trailer's brakes to ensure that your trailer slows at the same rate. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

I like the fact that I have a proportional brake controller I can stick in my glove box. It doesn’t have to be hardwired to the vehicle which is nice because I can use it on different applications. This one is definitely a plus over time delay brake controllers.

After an initial issue and replacement, the product has worked very well. Having an adjustable proportional controller that you can throw in your glove box is pretty handy. It’s response time is very quick.

2014 Dodge Ram Pickup

The factory brake controller on our 2014 Ram 3500 would never give us good braking for our 5th wheel. The best voltage that the controller would provide to the electric brakes was just under 10 volts; and that was at full settings. Dealer said that this year vehicle never would give more voltage.

This etrailer brake controller was not only easy to set up, it does a fantastic job stopping our trailer.

Finally peace of mind towing.

Still works great. Nice to have confidence in the ability to stop as necessary in any circumstances.

We have been using the Echo wireless brake controller for about a year with our little travel trailer. In general it works well, no problems with the installation or connection to our phones. There is a little rubber strap that supposedly keeps it attached to the vehicle, but it is pretty useless. We keep a bunch of 1cm wide zip ties in the car in order to secure the unit to our car.

Mark

The echo wireless works well. It is easy to setup for different trailers or road conditions. The new software update improves connectivity. The little safety strap that it came with is long gone, and it was useless to begin with. I just keep a bag of zip ties in the car to secure the echo to the cars seven pin connector.

@Mark That's a nice solution!

by:

Electronics work perfectly, but finding it difficult to keep the trailer cable attached to the controller. I also don’t trust the unit to stay connected to my car plug using the rubber strap provided with the brake controller. It’s too stretchy it seems, becoming unhooked easily. Overall very happy that this product was invented and works as advertised. Improve the ability to securely connect the unit to the car and trailer cable to the unit, I would give 5 stars.

Toyota Echo

I have owned the Curt Echo WBC for one year now and have been impressed with the versatility of the product. I use it with multiple trailers and vehicles. My only ding is making sure to provide support for the contoller as it is heavy for the plug in and I'm always concened that it will vibrate out. So far, that has not occured.

Customer service response is prompt. Order arrived quickly. I’ve attached, synced, and tested the controller on my 2020 Tacoma, pulling my 16ft travel trailer. Lights and app indicate it is working. I’m still testing adjustments, as I’ve never used a brake controller. I saw some reviews that complained about brake pulsing at low speeds. I have NOT experienced this problem. Manual actuation works well at low speed. Information says app must run in the foreground. I’m trying to determine what that means. Can I open the app and switch to another app, or does the app need to stay on constant display?

Etrailer Expert

Brooke M.

2/26/2024

Yes! The app should be the one on constant display on your phone screen; the one you are viewing. It looks like the reason is if its running in the background, if you have a different app on display while towing, it can cause delays in breaking times. Best to be safe and just run the OneControl Auto app when towing.

2015 Chevrolet Colorado

Overall, I like the way the unit operates, with the Bluetooth portability. It’s easy to move from vehicle to vehicle. I also know it works, as I encountered a hard braking incident in traffic, and everything responded as hoped.

The build quality suffers, as the little rubber strap and hook to “fasten” it with quickly broke. I replaced it with a stainless nut and bolt, and hook it around the fold down cap to keep it in place. Otherwise, I’d rate it a higher!

This controller has worked flawless for me. I’ve used it on a 2009 Lexus RX350, 2022 Lexus RX350, and 2022 Lexus GX460. Never an issue connecting or operating. My father, on the other hand, has the exact controller for use with his 2018 Ford F-150, and has had many issues with connection and operation. I love it’s modularity and simplicity.

Dan

3/13/2024

Still using this controller frequently, even though my GX has a pigtail for a wired controller. This is just so simple and quick to plug in when I need it, and take out when I don’t. Zero flaws, zero hiccups, zero issues.

by:

Had it working within minutes of taking out of the box. Controller works well. it remembers the last setting which is helpful. I was able to set up an profile for driving the highway and a separate profile for when I am backing up (don't need as much brake).

Glad the unit had strap, although it is a little difficult to secure and does need to be checked.

3.5 great years. No issues. Then Yesterday I was forced to move to a new app to communicate with the controller. This is NOT cool. New app was difficult to connect. Then I find out I must have location services turned on for it to work. This is an invasion of my privacy just for me to control my trailer safely. App has to be running and in the foreground - what on earth???? I want to be able to use my phone, run maps etc. Basically the ability to use my controller as I intended when I spent my money has been taken from me. I feel robbed.

Chevrolet Tahoe

A great controller. It was simple to setup and use. I love the ability to use it in different vehicles ---- and no wiring hassle. Plug and play, make a couple adjustments and it worked like promised. I have showed it to several friends, who were totally amazed, had no idea there was a product like it out there. Towing a 18ft enclosed trailer with a Tahoe presently.

by:

I love the ease of use and simplicity of it, however.
I use it on my pusher MH and it will not keep connectivity. I think it's because of the distance and obstacles.

I would highly recommend this product for a pick up application.

by:

Brake controller works well, but I would like to see a more substantial connection to the power socket on the car. Velcor is provided, but I would prefer something that ties to the car's frame. The way it is, I feel like the controller could fall off on a rough road.

by:
2019 Honda Ridgeline

The Curt Wireless brake controller installed easily on my 2019 Honda Ridgeline for towing my 24' travel trailer. It worked well on the one occasion that I had to use it. Nice to have the visual in the app on how the brakes were being applied.

by:

The Echo is a convenient trailer brake. It's easy to set up and use every time I hook up my trailer. I use Bluetooth from an old smartphone mounted to the left of of my steering wheel so I can keep my cell phone free.

The only problem is that the rubber strap kept getting un latched from the rubber pin. So I just use two bungee-balls to keep the ECHO connected to the car harness and the trailer plug. (see Photo)

by:

Works amazingly well after the brief learning curve. You just can’t over think the process and do it. What a difference not having to install a brake controller on a new vehicle. I would buy it again.

by:

So far it's doing exactly as it was designed to do. Only issue is that stupid rubber strap. It has a button on it and as I was trying to loop this thing over the plug door, it flew off. Why would you make one removable? In any case, I put a zip tie around it. I was lucky to find the button on the ground and tried it again only for it to fly of once again. I like the controller how it works and it's simplicity

2019 Chevrolet Traverse

Great product! I use it with our 2019 Chevrolet Traverse to tow our RZR/Trailer. Once set up works flawlessly. One critic....its a little expensive.

by:

Got delivered in a timely manner was in great condition. Just activated it this morning. Followed instructions ran into trouble when connecting to it with the app. It needs to be connected to your trailer as well to activate it so it can be located when searching for it. Setting it up was ok after that. I hooked it up and moved around some while using breaks on truck. Used the direct break on phone to see if it would stop, it did. Will use it sometime after I figure out the truck towing settings, sensors.

by:

This product has been excellent. The connectivity is immediate, even without opening the app. My bluetooth button has always worked simply. The colored lights are simple and communicative. I love the ease and lack of setup.

On the flap, the corner of the thumb tab has broken off. Seems within regular wear and tear for towing.

by:
2021 Ram 1500

Took a little patience but it paired. Added a little wd40 to trailer 7way...and everything works! The baseline setup was perfect for my single axle travel trailer.

by:

Initially wouldn’t connect to iPhone but after uninstall/reinstall of app it was fine. After literally traveling around the entire US I have to say it was a blessing with plug-and-play simplicity and total control over braking parameters. The phone lost Bluetooth connection a few times while traveling but the controller maintains the program so no big deal. For me it was nice to see the braking rate on the phone graphic. GREAT PRODUCT! 5 stars!

by:

As long as you follow the directions for hooking it up precisely, it works marvelously. Especially, if like us, no OEM brake controller was available for our Jeep Grand Cherokee.

I give it a low rating, however, because it is made very cheaply. Just from regular use (plugging it in and unplugging it), the unit cracked, and then after 1-2 more uses it completely fell apart. See the pictures.

I wanted to let you know that the controller does have a 1 year warranty and I have sent the warranty return instructions in a separate email to you.

by:

Simple and quick way to set up a vehicle for trailer brakes. Cost effective, too, as you can use it for multiple tow vehicles. Easy to pair, I use an older “obsolete” iPhone with Bluetooth instead of my everyday iPhone. Be careful, though, this one is a replacement for one that vanished while camper was in for service.

by:

It is a new year and this five start rated product is now a three star. The reason being is the forced update to the "Lippert One Control" app - away from its original CURT app. The Lippert One Control app is not working with iOS. It is a known problem with BT, location, font size, screen brightness, and zoom. Currently, one has to restore the Display Settings on iPhone to the default status to make the app work. It gets stuck on the "Accept/Cancel" screen because of font/zoom settings. Though working with Lippert support, it's 2.20.24 and the app is only functional when these default settings are applied. The default settings get applied to the entire phone making my phone impossible to see, to read, to determine color. The font is tiny, it's not bright, I cannot zoom, so I'm not sure what's taking so long for Lippert developers to get updates rolled out. The forced update to the Lippert One Control app rolled out in late 2023 and it never worked. Reviews in App Store are 1.3 and issues are still compounding. The brake controller may work without the app but the settings you need may not be the presets. I could tell the controller was not how I set it up on CURT app, so I had to drive without a brake controller. Until App Store reviews indicate consistent excellent status as the CURT app did, without rendering your own utility worthless, I cannot recommend this innovative and wonderful product. It worked well under CURT but Lippert still hasn't figured out what is going on and did not think more broadly when developing. Great product if it worked!

  • Easiest Brake Controller Installation for 2011 Ford Explorer
The 2011 Ford Explorer would not have been equipped with a factory installed brake controller, you'll want to install an aftermarket brake controller to actuate the brakes on your trailer. Assuming you purchased a wiring harness that provides a 4 pole trailer connector like part # 118540, the easiest to install option would be the Curt Echo wireless brake controller, part # C51180. To install the controller, you'll use the # ETBC7L install kit. The Echo plugs inline at the trailer connection...

  • Recommended Brake Controller for a Dual Axle Trailer
With your 2013 Mercedes GL-450 already having a factory 7 Way installed, the Curt Echo # C51180 will be a great option. This will work with trailers that have electric or electric-over-hydraulic trailer brakes on up to 2 axles. One add on I like to suggest with the Curt Echo is the Manual Override Button # C83HR. After the initial set up with your cell phone, having this button will allow you to operate the manual override without having to reach for your cell phone.

  • Equipment Needed to Tow 1500 lb Brake Equipped Trailer with 2014 Subaru Crosstrek
You don't mention whether you already have a trailer hitch, so we'll begin there. I'd recommend a Class III hitch, because if you also wanted to use the hitch for accessories like a bike rack or a cargo carrying tray, you'll have greater capacity and many more possible options. I'd recommend the Curt Class III hitch, part # C13135. The hitch includes all necessary installation hardware. You'll also need a ball mount and trailer ball. For the ball mount, I'd recommend part # 2753 and #...

  • Easy to Install Brake Controller for 2020 Ford Ranger with Facotry 7-Way
For your 2020 Ford Ranger with the factory 7-way we have the very easy brake controller solution of the Curt Echo Mobile part # C51180 which only requires being plugged into an active 7-way and once synced to a smart phone is ready to be towed with. We don't have a solution that plugs into a port under your dash at this time (March 2021).

  • Brake Controller Recommendation for 2014 Chevy Traverse
The Curt Echo Mobile part # C51180 is super convenient and has had a few revisions to make it more reliable and better performing but the Prodigy P3 part # 90195 is basically the gold standard of brake controller due to how incredibly great it works and how reliable it is. For what you are wanting and the concerns you mentioned the P3 with the install harness part # 3026-P would definitely be the way to go.

  • Incorrect Pin When Pairing Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller
The pin number you need to enter to pair the Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller part # C51180 is located under the lid on older ones and under the lid and in the instructions on the newer ones. The pin is specific to your exact unit. If you have lost your pin you will need to reach out to Curt directly for a new one.

  • Parts Needed to Get a 7-way Connector and Brake Controller on a 2022 Toyota Sienna
The first thing you will need to do to get a 7-way and brake controller on your 2022 Toyota Sienna is to install a 4-way connector like the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # TK69FR. Because you mentioned that you don't often tow I recommend the Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller # C51180, this brake controller is a bluetooth-enabled brake controller that wirelessly connects to your smartphone, turning your phone into a brake control interface. So there is no need for a bulky brake...

  • Troubleshooting Curt Echo Strong Braking at Low Speeds
The reason why you are seeing this issue is because when pairing the phone you likely already have your trailer 7-Way plugged into the Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller # C51180. If you unplug the Echo, then unplug the 7-Way from the Echo, and then delete the app from your phone, you can then reinstall the app and then plug your Echo into the 7-Way on your 2020 Ford Ranger (by itself) until the Echo has a solid blue light. If this doesn't work let me know and I can help you troubleshoot...

  • What Prevents Curt Echo Mobile Brake Controller from Falling Out When Travelling
The lids of 7-ways have a spring loaded catch on them that holds the connector into the socket. This prevents the 7-way, or in this case the Curt Echo part # C51180 from being able to fall out while in use. So basically when you go to install this controller you have to pull up on a spring loaded lid of the 7-way. That lid once released will pull down on the controller's tab that locks it into place so that it doesn't fall out.

  • Parts Needed to Add Brake Controller to 2015 Infiniti QX70
It sounds like you're pretty well set up! I'd recommend the Curt Echo wireless brake controller, part # C51180. The Echo communicates wirelessly with your smart phone, allowing you to control and monitor the performance of your trailer brakes from the vehicle cab whiteout needing extensive wiring and drilling any holes in your dashboard. All you'll need to do is install the # HM11140805 and plug the # HM47180 into it. Ground the white tire to the vehicle. The red wire would be extended...

  • Recommended Trailer Brake Controller For 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor
I have included a video of a trailer brake controller being installed in a different vehicle, but we have not had the chance to install one in a 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor. If you do not already have a 7-way connector installed, you will need to install one by first installing a 4-way connector # C56039. With a 4-way connector installed you will then need to install the # ETBC7 which will give you wiring needed to power trailer brakes. This will allow you to use a traditional trailer brake...
