Features to know about

More Clearance for Rough Terrain: 4" Lift with Axle-Less Design

Dragging an axle across rough ground can end a trip fast. This heavy-duty Timbren Axle-Less trailer suspension solves that with a built-in 4" lift and no thru-axle hanging below the frame. The design fits any trailer frame width and gives wider, off-road tires room to work. With up to 7,000 lbs of capacity and long spindles that accept wide tires, it keeps the deck height the same while adding serious ground clearance for uneven roads or steep driveways.

Smooth Ride Over Every Mile: AEON Rubber Jounce and Rebound Springs

Bouncing and rattling are common when you haul over washboard roads or hit potholes. This suspension uses Timbren’s AEON rubber jounce springs to absorb impacts and support the trailer’s load, while rebound springs steady the ride and cut down on roll and bottoming out. Each side works independently, so bumps on one side don’t transfer shock to the other. The result is a stable, quiet ride whether the trailer is empty or fully loaded.

Parts diagram of Timbren Axle-Less trailer suspension showing labeled components including jounce spring, rebound spring, control arm, and spindle.

Built to Handle Heavy Loads and Hard Use: 7,000-lb Capacity

When you’re hauling big weight, you need suspension parts that can take it. These two bolt-on units replace one full axle assembly and are built from heavy-gauge steel with a black powder-coat finish that resists rust and corrosion. The setup carries up to 7,000 lbs and uses a 5-bolt brake flange and 1/2" bolt holes for secure mounting. It’s the kind of hardware that stands up to abuse on long, demanding trips.

Easy Upkeep and Long-Term Serviceability: E-Z Lube Long Spindles

Keeping bearings greased shouldn’t be a chore. The E-Z Lube spindles have built-in grease zerks for simple maintenance. If a spindle ever gets damaged, it can be replaced without swapping the entire suspension. The polyurethane pivot bushings never need lubrication and keep movement smooth through 3-3/8" of suspension travel.

Stable Frame Support Options: Built-In Crossbeam Mounting

Because this system removes the axle beam, it includes square holes for a 2" x 2" steel crossmember to keep the frame square and strong. That tubing sits higher than a traditional axle, so you keep the clearance advantage while reinforcing the frame. It’s a straightforward way to combine solid structure with off-road performance.

Video Transcript for Checking Out the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension

Hello neighbor Steven here with etrailer.com. Today we're looking at the Timbren axle lift trailer suspension with the heavy duty long spindle and a four inch lift. Now folks, this is what they consider a five volt spindle and it's rated at 7,000 pounds capacity. Now folks, I'm kinda limited on space today, so I wanted to kind of throw everything up here the best I could and give you an idea of what you're gonna give. But I wanna start off, I show you an image so you will get all the hardware and everything you see in the picture. I don't have the hardware laid out today due to space.

So again, you're left and right hand side, two spindle assemblies and all the hardware spacers, castle nuts, Kotter pins, everything you see there. Now getting into it folks, this will help deliver a nice smooth, stable, quiet ride regardless of the load size up to 7,000 pounds. This internal jounce here is gonna absorb the road shock and also support your trailer's load. The spring does rebound, which is gonna reduce body roll rattle, bottoming out, those kind of things. And it has a built-in Camber and tow in to help reduce the wear and tear on those trailer tires.

The units do work independently, one from each side, so what affects one side will not affect the other side. So that's a nice upgrade and feature of these as well. Now again, I don't have the hardware laid out here, but roughly to show you what this guy looks like installed pretty much something like this and you'd have it all bolted together obviously and everything. It does have a nice black powder coat finish. It's gonna resist rust and corrosion.

It is super, super thick, very robust, heavy gauge steel construction. It's gonna handle all the road abuse that you can send its way. Now the long spindle here accepts wide Off-Road Trailer Tire, so that's a nice feature and it is two separate units so you can bolt directly to your trailer frame and it is designed for like over-landing, off-road, that kind of stuff. Now the nice thing with a drop spindle is that it'll keep your trailer deck height the same but increase the ground clearance. Now everything here has built-in greaser, so you can see on the tip of the spindle there to make maintenance and that kind of stuff, minimal and easier to get to.

So it's compatible with the tire size of 235 85 16 or larger, and a wheel diameter of 16 inches or larger, the bearings and everything is sold separately. That's part number 25580 on the inner bearing. And the outer bearing is a 14125A. And then those matching races are sold separately. The grease seal would be a 10-36 also sold separately. Now folks, this is designed for a single tandem use trailers. Do not use it for three axles, it's all rated for two axles, most. Now if you want to do two axles, you would need two sets of this kit. Now keep in mind your hub drums, all that stuff is sold separately, 7,000 pound capacity. And one other thing to note that you can kind of see the square that goes all the way through. Let me zoom in here. So this square goes all the way through. That's for installing a cross beam support. So this axle system still requires a cross beam support. If your trailer frame doesn't already have one in place, you can retrofit it by simply getting a two by two inch steel tubing and run it through those and cut it to length as needed. Or you could also simply add a steel reinforcement bracket on the inside of the trailer frame. Well, I think it's gonna wrap it up for our look at this Timbren axle list trailer suspension. Again, you're getting the whole kit, all the hardware and everything included as you see in the photo there. Folks, thank you so much for your time. I'm Steven, thanks for watching and have a great day.

Timbrens work great! They make my homebuilt camper tow smooth, straight, and no bounce. Off road they give me better control and don’t make my light camper jump around on the trail. Install was straight forward, instructions were adequate and overall went pretty well. Staff at etrailer helped me pick the right bearings and provided great customer service as usual. I would recommend these to anyone looking to improve their trailers handling and towing characteristics.

So we had a torsion axle / frame failure and these and a new subframe was our solution! Amazing product upgrade with 12" brakes and 7000lb HD Running 16" BFG ko2 tires ! These are truly bolt on if you don't have frame problems also if your running single axles on the west coast and mountains the 12" brakes are a huge upgrade!!!

I was looking for a low profile axle system for my motorcycle trailer. The primary requirement was to be able to load my motorcycle by myself which required a low-profile trailer. With the 4" drop provided by Timbren, this setup turned out great. I originally intended on using ramps but after I swapped the leaf spring axle out with the Timbren, I found I was able to ride my motorcycle on/off without the need for the ramps.

Originally, I was going to go axle-less but I found when torquing down the assembly to my frame it started to compress the aluminum rail. To take the pressure off the frame I added the 2" bar from axle to axle. Pulls smooth and effortlessly.

I've had several people comment on the trailer height with one wanting to buy the trailer from me. This person worked at the local Honda Dealership. He thought it was a great design and I would imagine he's seen a variety of trailers come through his lot.

The other option I considered was a torsion axle but I was looking for the lowest profile I could get. Therefore, cost was not a key factor. I also like the soft ride the Timbren system provides. Not sure if the torsion design would have been as smooth over bumpy roads. Regardless, I'm pleased with how this project came out.

Its been a year since Ive installed the new axles on my trailer my comments above still hold true. Im very pleased with the ride quality of the system after a year. The trailer tracks true and has hauled many things other than my motorcycle. Even empty it doesnt hop around like the original stock straight axle did. No regrets on the purchase.

Excellent, helpful customer service sold me this product, and trust me when I say it's worth the price tag. Pulled the old axle and leaf spring off a 60's era Bantam and swapped out for this with a support bar in between. Bumped up tires to 315/75r16 BFG TA/KO's to match my rig and am amazed at how much better this trailer now pulls. Empty it wad bouncing all over the place with the old axle and leaf spring setup. Now I hardly even know it's there. Was very easy to install, took a couple hours but I am happy with how it turned out. A+++ product and customer service!

They are GREAT! I put them on a small offroad trailer that has followed me all over some really rough roads in remote Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. They have performed flawlessly, helped the trailer tow extremely well, and were the single best upgrade I did to that trailer. Very much looking forward to another summer of exploring! Massive upgrade to the stock axle leaf spring combo, and I have had the opportunity to show it off to alot of fellow overlanders. I cant speak high enough of them. I also purchased a set of airbags for my vehicle which unfortunately have not held up terribly well. I have had to field repair one once already, and neither holds air terribly well. Truth be told they seem very underdesigned for the job they perform. From my super secret high tech pocket internet window.

Used this on a camping trailer behind our Jeep. The suspension handled 1000 miles of washboard gravel roads and mild rocky offroading with ease. We don't drive gently and had the trailer airborne at one point. The brackets that we opted to fabricate for them were straightforward and simple to install. I especially like the ground clearance under the trailer that you gain due to the lack of a solid traditional axle. The ride quality overall was excellent, especially given where we took it. In hindsight we should have gotten the 4" travel version as it may have been able to soak up deep ruts at 40mph a bit better. Only mild complaint is that the powdercoating on the leading edges had already begun to flake off when we received the suspension. I hit it with a can of spray paint, but I would have hoped it would be more durable. Overall, I will definitely be purchasing this axle-less suspension again for my next trailer build.

Ashley, the 4 version doesnt actually give it more travel. Its the same was the standard or the system as far as suspension travel. What the 4 system does it lift the height of the trailer from the ground, depending on what youre doing with the trailer. For an off road trailer I personally would do the 4raise for added ground clearance, just gotta make sure the trailer doesnt get top heavy. The standard system is good for pretty much all uses and the system is for when you need a really low deck height for a lawn mower or go kart for example. I appreciate your review as I am going to be building a small off road campingbug-out trailer to tow behind my lifted FJ cruiser. I havent decided if I am going to go with the standard height or the 4 lift as I am going to be running the same off road tires toyo RT that I have on my FJ on the trailer and I want the trailer to sit around the same height. Did you add brakes to yours? Im planning on either running electric brakes or if available in am going to run surge brakes.

Michael, My trailer was so light even fully loaded that I didnt see the need for brakes and never missed having them.I stand corrected: We did get the 4 lift, but the non-HD instead of the HD because the specs said that it had a bit more travel. and we didnt need the weight capacity. That being said, Im still happy with how this suspension performs. My trailer is on 31s on a stock Cherokee.

by:
Incredible system. Handled our Overland trek through Colorado and Moab. These axles on our 1917 Ford bed ran multiple Jeep Badge of Honor trails. The suspension handled flawlessly. Handles off camber rocks and drop offs smoothly. We ran the 4 inch lift and off road offset to fit the factory Jeep wheels.

Here are some pictures of my Timbren axle installation. I used a 2000#
axle and a 3500# spindle combination
. I am running a original 14" tire.
It was a moderately easy installation.
by:
After a great deal of research, I ultimately chose the Timbren long arm kit to replace the torsion axle under my teardrop trailer. My initial impression is that there is simply no comparison between the two. It now rides better, pulls better and handles better than I could have imagined. The Timbren axle system is incredibly well built and is much more confidence-inspiring. While the spring rate closely matches my trailer weight, the components are much more rugged and robust. The spindles, bearings and brakes are rated at double the capacity of my old axle which gives me great peace of mind. I pull my trailer, both on and off road, anywhere it will fit and the long travel and heavier components are a game-changer for my travels. Installation, while requiring a bit of forethought, was otherwise straightforward and methodical. Documentation available from etrailer and Timbren, is second to none. Instructions were clear and concise with drawings and detail taking the major guesswork out of the equation. Even though, due to the odd frame design of my trailer that required a bit of work to adapt, I ended up making some frame stiffeners, the adaptation was as simple as it could possibly be. I've ordered from etrailer in the past and they were 100% accurate on this order as well. I ordered the Timbren kit without backing plates and hubs due to the requirements of my trailer and etrailer suggested, explained availability and supplied all of the components I needed. They truly a stress-less bunch of folks with an extraordinary website. I'll no doubt turn to them again...
by:
In one word: awesome! I used these to replace a wimpy torsion suspension on a small trailer. Torsion is not made for offroad and I also wanted to add some lift to the trailer. This thing improved the ride and handling a lot. Before when the trailer was empty it would actual jump off the ground when I hit a bump or speed hump. Now it actually has travel in the suspension whether loaded or not and the improvement is noticeable right away.
Notes:
1) This is a trailing arm suspension, so in order to stay centered in the existing wheel wells it needed to mount about 8 inches further forward than the existing torsion suspension was. My trailer didn't have frame where I needed it, so I had to do some fabrication to mount the Timbren forward the 8 inches needed.
2) My original suspension the wheel center line was actually above the bottom of the frame rail by a few inches. The Timbren as you can see in the pictures the hub (wheel center line) is 6 or 7 inches below the bottom of the frame rail that it mounts to. So in the end the Timbren with no lift or drop actually lifted my trailer about 9 or 10 inches. This was perfect for my needs because it was WAY too low before and I am using it on really hilly dirt roads and it handles them like a champ!
3) You are most likely going to need a 2 inch square bar tube to connect the two sides for stability. If you are doing the install DIY, I would wait until the Timbren are installed so you can measure exactly how long you need. This stuff is really, really hard to cut so it is nice to be able to tell the metal shop to cut to length when you are buying it. I got mine at a local metal shop.
4) IF you are replacing leaf springs with Timbren, notes 1 and 2 will still apply but you will need to make the measurements to make sure you get the wheels in the same spot under the wheel wells and also measure to see if you need to get the no drop, drop or lift version of the Timbren

I love these. 30k miles and still going. Almost 1k offroad and they're still holding up. Fully loaded my overlanding trailer weighs 2k lbs, empty 1360 lbs. They did settle a little, but I just raised my fenders a little.
by:
Great product so far after 1 year. Everthing is holding up and i have put it to good use on multiple occasions. The lift kit made my trailer off road capable and performed to my expectations.
by:
Outstanding product. I installed this set up on a M1102 military trailer. Straight forward install once the original axle is out of the way. The ride is much better and handles the roughest of trails very well. Also, with the more modern hub you have a lot more choice in electric brakes and wheel bolt pattern.

I think their axle-less design is very clever. The build quality of the suspension part looks good. I have heartburn over the spindle build quality. The spindle is mounted to the suspension and then the trailer wheel mounts on the spindle. The spindles I received are warped from welding. The plate that bolts onto the suspension does not mount flat due to this warping. I called Timbren. The gentleman that helped me was very pleasant. I described the problems and he said he would check his inventory and call me back. He did call me back and said they are all like that. He said get out the grinder and fix what you can and just tighten the bolts super tight, maybe the gap will go away. Really? Wow. The other problems are a LOT of weld spatter where the bolts are supposed to fit and they made a bend in the plate too close to the bolt holes so two bolt heads hit the bend and dont fit flat against the part they are supposed to hold together. Yikes! I am taking the spindles to a machine shop to fix them but I would not have ordered this Timbren stuff had I been warned before hand. So, fair warning.

Your comments regarding the Axle-Less Suspension are greatly appreciated. To address the issues you have pointed out, we have carefully reviewed our assembly. While we did not come across any major issues, we did however discover a few areas where the quality could be improved, specifically in the areas you brought to our attention. The following improvements have been made to improve the manufacturing process: - Robotic welder gun re-programmed so that it stops from getting too close to the areas adjacent to the mounting holes of the outboard arm and control arm. This will minimize weld spatter. - The distortion of the flat plates is due to the high degree of heat generated during welding. We conducted experiments, changing the sequence of welding operations until we were successful in minimizing the distortion. We apologize if our customer service in addressing your concerns was insufficient at the time of your phone call. Timbren is an ISO 9001:2008 company with an excellent reputation for providing customers with quality products that are well-performing and easy to install.

I installed these on a small jeep style camping trailer that I built. I plated my frame and also used the suggested two inch square tubing to tie them together. It rides very well, looks like it should be very durable, it's a simple design, simple to install, more economical than other independent systems, has less parts to go bad than other systems, I would highly recommend to any body using a trailer on rough roads!

We just drove 1200 miles mostly at 75mph. The axles work very well in all conditions, trailer ride very smoothly.

by:
Very pleased with the design and heavy duty construction of these axles. Used them to build an off-road trailer and they performed flawlessly throughout many challenging trails and off road situations. My only complaint is that the ez-lube hub design does not take grease very easily. I've had to disassemble the hubs to properly grease both bearings due to the inadequate amount of grease flowing into the bearings.
by:
I mounted these axels on my off road trailer, this trailer has 37" tires (same as my jeep) tracks perfectly on the road at 60 - 70 mph, Last summer I pulled this trailer on the Rubicon trail were while on the rocks the lean angle was so extream my trailer turned over on its side, when I winched my trailer back on its wheels all the weight of the trailer was on one axel. Timbren Axle-Less trailer axels are so well built and strong nothing bent, everything stayed intact. There is no sag in these axels as well. I could not be more pleased with the Timbren axels.
by:
I replaced a failing torsion bar suspension and replaced with a timbren suspension it was a straight forward installation.
by:
Be warned! I would not buy from Etrailer ever again. We received our order and Etrailer failed to send the entire trailer axle kit. They did not include one spindle in the kit, rendering our order useless without ordering an additional spindle. Because more than 30 days had elapsed before reporting the issue, Etrailer refused to send the spindle, in addition to insinuating that I was deceiving them. This must be how they increase their revenues…don’t send the entire order, and if the customer does not catch it within 30 days, the customer loses and Etrailer makes more money. Absolutely horrible customer service from the company who failed to fulfill their end of the contract while accusing me of being deceptive. One star is far too generous for Etrailer and their scams.

  • Best Timbren Axle-Less Suspension and Wheel Recommendation for a Lightweight Hunting Trailer
Hi Ulysses, that sounds like an awesome hunting trailer project. For a trailer that will weigh around 1,000 pounds loaded, the Timbren Axle Less Trailer Suspension, Part # ASR2000S02, is the right choice. I recommend pairing it with the Easy Grease Trailer Idler Hub Assembly, Part # AKIHUB-545-35-G-EZ-K. I do not recommend using a 5 on 4 1/2 to 5 on 150 mm wheel adapter. Wheel adapters move the wheel farther away from the hub, which increases the load placed on the spindle and bearings....
