V-Bar Icebreakers

V-Bar Icebreakers

The V-shaped studs (also known as icebreakers, spikes, or cleats) that are built into these twist-link tire chains bite into ice, providing superior grip for a safer ride on ice-covered roads.

Installation

1. Drape the chain over the tire, making sure that the V-bars are facing out.

2. Drive forward about 1/4 of a tire revolution. (You can also lay the chain out and then drive onto it.)

3. Fasten the ends of the chain together.

4. Drive forward a bit and tighten the chain as needed by moving the hook to the next link.

You can use rubber or chain adjusters (sold separately) to increase the tension on the chains for a tighter fit.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire, as shown below.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Video Transcript for Titan Chain Snow Tire Chains Installation - 2021 Toyota Highlander

EB Angeline: Hi, it's EB Angeline from etrailer.com, and today we are looking at our Titan Chain snow tire chain with V-bar links here on our 2021 Toyota Highlander. This snow tire chain is a great option if you are looking for that extra grip or that extra traction on the road. If you have a lot of ice, or if you have a lot of deep snow, then this comes with these V-Bar studs that really grip into the ice and give you that traction you need so that you can drive safely. This does not come with its own tensioner. You can also pick up these separate tensioners if you feel like you do not have the best fit on your wheel. This was relatively easy to install with just one, two connections, although you do need to reach behind there to connect the other end of your snow tire chain. So let's take a look at the links themselves.

The chain links are made of a low carbon steel, which means they're strong and durable and help prevent corrosion. These have special V-bar studs, or cleats, and these really grip into the ice and give you that extra traction. Even the chains themselves have slight studs in them again for extra traction. So I installed these on the front wheel as per the instructions from Toyota. If you are not sure about where you need to install your snow tire chains, please check your owner's manual.

These are on tire size 235 65R18. If you're not sure what tire size you have, you can find them printed right here on this side wall, and that will help you choose out the correct chain fit for you. These chains are not class S compatible, meaning if you do have a limited field clearance on your Highlander, that might not be ideal for you. Here we have plenty of space though, so that means we can still get that extra traction and grip that this gives. Before install lets take a look at the bag it comes in. So this comes in a canvas bag.

I've seen other snow tire chains with maybe like more premium, hard shell cases. But if you just need a snow tire chain for like extreme emergencies, this is fine to carry around and just toss in your trunk for when you really need it. My personal thoughts about this snow tire chain was that while it is relatively easy to install, since it doesn't have different levers or adjustments, you just have two connections. On our Highlander here it was really difficult to get behind there because of the limited ground clearance, especially here behind the tire. So if that's something you're worried about, I recommend getting something else. But if you are fine with that and or if your vehicle is a little bit higher up, then this could work out great for you.

So let's take a look at the install process. Before install what I like to do is just spread out my chains on the ground just to make sure they're not tangled up and that all the links look good. There's no warp to links or damaged links, and this looks pretty good. Another thing to look for is to make sure that you have it facing the right way. So you will need to have the flat part of the link facing the tire and the hooked part should be facing away from the tire. With these style you can also see by how you have the V-bars and those should be definitely facing away from the tire. So when it all looks good, you can then pick up your chains and then drape them over the tire. We'll have them twisted around this way. There we go. Try to get them as centered around the tires as possible with enough length or an equal amount of length of chain on each side. The next step after you get this centered on your tire is to connect the ends. So first you need to connect the in the back. You have this chain on this side and there's a hook on the other side. So throw that as far back as you can then go around there and hook it together. After you've linked the ends in the back, you can then come to the front and link the front ends. So for our car here, what I did was use the second link in the back and for the front, let's see, I believe it will fit the first link to get. That's the best fit for us right here. After you inserted the hook into the link from the back, you then bring it forward and hook it to the extra link to secure, just like that. There's a version of this that comes with its own cams so that you can use that to bring tension in. And if this is not enough tension for you, you can also pick up separate tensioners like these to attach. I'll show you how to attach them. So first you have to make sure the hooks are facing away from your tire chain, and then you bring them down and hook them into the links. What I like to do is just go from side to side, just to make sure that they're evenly distributed like that. And you can see how it really brings our tire chain together and makes it tight. With this then you can then go to the other side and install your tire chains on the driver's side. And I do recommend that after installing you roll forward a little bit with your tires and then double check to make sure everything's still in place. And once they're good, then you're good to go. And that was a look here at our Titan Chain snow tire chains with V-bar links here on our 2021 Toyota Highlander.

I initially ordered a different type of snow chain but was quickly informed that there would be a delay due to backorder issues. The rep provided me with other chains that would fit my application that would ship much sooner and at the best price. I decided on these and the rep suggested I get the tensioners as the ones I wanted (the V link for my tire size) did not have cam tensioners as the picture may confuse.

In the end the customer service, desire to get me the best price and get it to me as soon as possible has made a return customer for sure!

Review from a similar V-Bar Ladder in Tire Chains

These worked Great. I got them for a job I had on top of a ski run where it was a pretty regular occurance to have a foot or more of snow dropped throughout the day and then just a bunch of mud the next.
These are easy to install, although I recomend a couple practice runs where its warm and dry, and easy to remove.
They took a beating and dug through the deep and the icy stuff to get me up some seriously steep slopes as well as had the bite to help me stop getting down the hill.
I would recomend these over the light weight version to anyone. They hold up better and are eaiser to use plus they work great.

Review from a similar V-Bar Ladder in Tire Chains

I ordered the v bar link snow chains because they work. This is my second set on two different size tires. As an long haul trucker , I admit these chains grab and dig into ice and snow, and they install just as easy as all others. But it's the v bar grip that is the difference. Drive slow with common sense and you will know what I'm talking about.

Review from a similar V-Bar Ladder in Tire Chains

I’m impressed. These tire chains are the real deal. I looked at various options online, Amazon, etc. I found etrailer. First, the web page is packed with info, tutorials, etc. once I ordered there was continuous communication. I downgraded from a 4x4 to a 4x2, and drive up to Buffalo, NY, from coastal Carolina. These chains are impressive and will provide traction and ease of mind going through the snow belt areas along Lake Erie and parts of the blue ridge mountains. I’ve hit heavy snow on this trip and wished I had a good tire chain. This resolved it. Installing is a breeze be sure to get the tire chain adjusters with them! Excellent service!

I was very pleased with the tire chains. Had no problems whatsoever. Easy to handle and put on my tires. Best of all, they kept my rig family and others safe on the road in snowing conditions while driving in Utah

Review from a similar V-Bar Ladder in Tire Chains

I used these chains on all 4 tires following 16 inches of snow and packed ice on mountain roads while elk hinting. We were forced to abandon camp and drive on treacherous roads to get back to lower elevations. The V-bars provided great traction on ice while navigating very steep and dangerous curves.

Review from a similar V-Bar Ladder in Tire Chains

I used these all winter, 6 days a week, up and down 5 miles of ice-covered mountain road. V-bar only way to go. But, nothing saves you on rain-covered ice. Just stay home and wait it out. With this kind of use, lasts only one season before rust takes over.

Review from a similar V-Bar Ladder in Tire Chains

Have not used the chains yet, but feel better having them when traveling in the mountains during the winter again (wish I had them last winter). Website was very helpful in the selection, ordering was easy, and delivery faster than expected for 32lbs. The chains look great, just need to hone my skills on placing them with some dry runs - appears straight forward. Will update as they are used.

Review from a similar V-Bar Ladder in Tire Chains

All items arrived in good condition in five days on Colorado mountain area, and were easy to install. The products all appear to be of good quality and should perform as expected when used. for 2017 Ram 2500, no enough clearance on rear tires, but no problem on Front tires clearance. Recommend the V-bar links and chain tighteners used on off-road snow and ice, 4 wheels drive, front ties for 2017 Ram 2500

  • Recommended Snow Tire Chains For My 2021 Toyota Highlander
I did some research and I checked the owner's manual of your 2021 Toyota Highlander. You will need to use a Class S compatible snow tire chain, they are the only snow tire chains that meet your owner's manual tolerances. They are designed for tight wheel well clearances. The Titan chains, part # TC2829, and , part # TC2829CAM, you are inquiring about are not Class S compatible snow tire chains. V-bar chains are the way to go for icy conditions as they do a great job breaking up the ice as the wheels turn. • 2017 Toyota Highlander Tire Chain Recommendation for P245/60R18 Tires
The Titan Chain Cable Snow Tire Chains # TC2029 will fit the P245/60R18 tires on your 2017 Toyota Highlander. These are a cost-effective way to stay legal in areas that require you to have traction devices but if you're looking for something to help you get through snow then we need to look at actual chains because cables won't help at all - the light snow rating basically just means snow that you can get through without chains. For something with the same ladder pattern you can use the...

  • What Tire Chains do You Recommend for My 2019 Toyota Highlander with 245/60-18 Tires?
Since you mention built-in cams, I believe you are referring to the Titan Snow Chains - V-Bar - Cams # TC2829CAM for your 245/60-18 tires on your 2019 Toyota Highlander. We do also sell these chains without the cams as part # TC2829. The only difference is that the # TC2829CAM are only approved for on-road use while the # TC2829 can be approved for on-road and off-road use.
