Form meets function in Konig's K-Summit tire chains. Unlike typical snow chains, the K-Summit chains require no attachments behind the wheel. Simply place two of the traction plates on top of the tire and fasten the K-Summit XL to the wheel's lug nut or bolt with the easy-to-use fixing key. Activate the chain's ratcheting mechanism and you'll be ready to roll. As you drive away, the traction plates clamp onto the tire surface, and the chain adjusts to conform to the tire perfectly, providing a precise fit even on worn tires. After use, fold up the tire chains and store them in the compact, reusable carrying case.

The K-Summit XL delivers an extremely user-friendly design. Each chain sits on top of your tire's treads instead of wrapping around the entire wheel. This design not only eliminates the threat of scratches to your wheels, but it also ensures that there is no interference with any suspension or braking components on the inside of the wheel well.

Konig snow chains are handmade in Italy of hardened manganese-nickel alloy steel for durability. The reduced-clearance, D-shape links provide superior traction for excellent grip on snow and ice. The durable plastic traction plates have metal studs to give you superior grip while also providing a high level of driving comfort.

K-Summit Installation

How to Install the K-Summit Snow Chain:

  1. Lay 2 of the chains traction plates on top of the tire.
  2. Attach chain to 1 wheel nut.
  3. Activate the ratchet, which tightens as you drive away.

K-Summit Lug Nut Adapter

Lug Nut Adapter

Attach the lug nut adapter that matches your wheel bolt size to the fixing key. The most commonly used adapters are included with your K-Summit snow chains. (etrailer.com's custom fitguide will indicate whether your vehicle requires an adapter that is sold separately.) The fixing key then mounts to the wheel bolt on the end where the adapter has been affixed. The other end attaches to the K-Summit base, which includes the ratcheting mechanism that tensions the chains as you drive.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chains, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire, as shown below.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates the width
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel expressed in inches

Video Transcript for Konig Premium Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains Installation - 2019 Toyota RAV4

John: Hey guys, John here from etrailer.com. Today, we have our 2019 Toyota RAV4 and we are test fitting the Konig K-Summit XL tire chains and Konig does a really nice job of making sure that they take care of us when we're installing this. We do have a nice carrying case so that way we can toss it in the back and not have to worry about the rear of our vehicle getting dirty. The instructions have a nice laminate finish so we can lay this in the snow or the mud and we don't have to worry about the instructions getting ruined. We also have all the tools we need and different adapters for different tire sizes, that we get to store in this bag to keep it all together. And then they do also provide us with gloves that are plastic in case we forget to bring our own gloves as well as a kneeling pad, a plastic kneeling pad, so that way we can try to keep our clothes clean while we're installing these. These tire chains have a D-Link in a diamond pattern, so it's going to give us a nice consistent ride quality over something like a ladder style chain, which is a little more bumpy feeling. The D-Link does a better job of getting us through snow and ice than some other options would like a cable chain that does more, just gives a little more friction or traction. This one does a better job of breaking that stuff up as well as these bracket looking things here. These are actually designed to help break up any ice.

These do have a manganese nickel alloy steel construction, so it's going to do a really good job at resisting rusting, corrosion and lasting a long time.Since the chain only sits on top of our tire tread and there's nothing installed on the back center of our tire, it really does a good job of protecting anything back here. So a lot of applications where you have low clearance in the back from brake lines and different components that could get damaged by your tires. This is a good solution for that.It also has great wheel protection. This here is actually a plastic piece, but it's a strong, durable plastic and so it can bend and it can hold up under the conditions. And so since that's touching our tire and then the only contact with our wheels here on the lug nut, we don't have to worry about our wheel getting damaged from these tire chains. Now, that we've gone over some of the features of these tire chains, let's install them together.

To initially installed these tire chains, we need to figure out which one of these adapters fits over our lug nuts. With our RAV4 today, the hubcap actually has smaller holes in the correct adapter uses, so we need to remove this to install these chains.Simply just pull it out. Now, we can install the chains. Now, we can refer to our instructions to see how exactly we need to configure this tire chain to get it installed. For our RAV4 today, the tire size is 225 65 17.

So the instructions say that we need to remove one of these pins, which gives us a little bit more room, doesn't have as much tension. We use these tools to remove the pin. So we'll remove this nut here and be mindful there is a spring on either side. So you want to keep track of all of these pieces because they're a little smaller. Just bring over the spring and then move the spacer. Now, with the pin removed, we're ready to install this chain over our tire. Be sure that you put the chain as close to drape it over the center of our tread as much as possible.

And then since this does pull it onto the tires we drive, this section here, we're not going to be able to shove under the tire, so just start with the top draped over the center. The next step is to take the adapter and put it over our lug nut. Be sure that this red arrow is pointing towards the center of our wheel. So it doesn't matter which lug you put it on just to make sure that arrows pointed in the right direction. We use our included tool to tighten down this. You're going to feel that tighten up. You can't pull that off a lug nut. The next step is to start using our ratchet to pull the chain closer around the tire. We pulled our car forward a little bit, which did move the chain some, but it is helpful to come out, and make sure the chain sits over the center of our tread. As we drive, this will still center a little bit, but we do want to come out here and double check everything. Now, that we have everything in place, we're repeat this for the other side of the vehicle as well. I would like to point out, we did mention that the tire size here is 225 65 17.So if this does not fit your vehicle or your tire, I do recommend checking out our fit guide because it'll direct you towards the correct fit for your vehicle. It's also worth pointing out to check your owner's manual for learning instructions regarding tire chains. Our RAV4, the owner's manual says to only install them on the front wheels, so you want to make sure that you follow those directions as well. And that'll complete our look at the Konig K-Summit XL tire chains on our 2019 RAV4. Thanks for watching.

Etrailer.com did an excellent job in shipping the two sets of chains that I ordered. Super detailed tracking information was awesome. It always makes me nervous when buying over the internet that a retailer may ship the wrong item especially considering how many different sizes these chains are available. I will point out that the chains were advertised as Thule. However, I received one set of Thule and the other set was Konig who bought out this chain line from Thule in 12/2015. In comparing the two brands side-by-side, the components and build are absolutely indistinguishable from each other with the exception of the brand stickers. I have no reason to believe one brand to be superior to the other. The K56's fit my Honda Accord 225/65/17 tires like a glove. They are a combination of simplicity and sophistication, if that's possible. I can't wait to try them out on the ice and snow. Thank you etrailer.com and I would definitely order from you again.

So far so good. I’m waiting for snow before I give 5 stars. It’s recommended you fit the chains before you actually need them to get familiar with the innovative design. I had to remove all 5 yellow bolts since my wheels are larger. Keep the extra hardware but you won’t need them unless you change cars. Once fitted you’re good to go. Wear gloves to mount them in about 5 minutes. I

Purchased these awesome chains because my 2019 traverse has custom wheels (wider) so traditional chains/cables that wrap around the wheels would cause damage to my brake components. The instructions in the manual can be a little confusing but read and watch the tutorial video and you'll be good to go. I had to remove the exact amount of bolts from the chains it recommended in the manual for my wheels, 5 if I remember correctly. After a couple dry runs installing/removing at home I was ready for big bear. The family and I spent Thanksgiving up on big bear and yes, it snowed A LOT!! The chains worked great and along with a lot of looks from other drivers, I even got compliments from the locals there that obviously are used to driving with chains. When it came time to take them off halfway down the mountain, it was super fast and easy I was done in no time. NOTE: the bolt that goes over the lug nut leaves an indentation on your lug nuts, especially if your vehicle has the chrome finished ones like mine does. Have to buy a new set of front wheel lug nuts and use the old ones for when we drive up to the snow again and use these cool chains!

I'm giving these four stars as I haven't tried them in snow. I bought them in Spring to save a few $$. The instructions are a little weird as the English translation isn't great and the pics are unclear in a few places. The instruction videos on etrailer are very helpful. You MUST set these up before you need to use them as they have to be sized to your specific tire dimensions and lug nut. The tightening wrench has a torque setting. When you fit the lug nut connection you tighten until you hear a click. It ends up really tight and took a little work to remove. After the lug connection is on, you tighten a ratchet before rolling the vehicle to complete installation. I didn't notice at first you only tighten until you see a line of red stitching. Because of that the chain didn't go on property. I reset and tried again and all was fine. These go on very tight. At least if you follow instructions to the letter. Hope they do what I need them to do in winter.

Review from a similar K-Summit in Tire Chains

I am using K-Summit chains on a Chevy Bolt to get to a house in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I need the extra grip to get up some steep hills if there is snow or ice on the ground. The chains successfully allow me to climb hills through snow at least 4 inches deep and over ice where I could not otherwise go. The chains are easy to install and remove. The problem is that after a few uses several of the D Links broke. The advantage is that the Konig sent replacement chains under warranty. (There was a bit of a communication mix up between Italy and the United States. If I was a bit more persistent, I'm sure the warranty process would have been much quicker.) Haven't yet had a need to put the replacement chains to much use, so don't yet know whether I received a defective set of chains or whether this design is not suited to my use (which shouldn't be overly demanding). The purchase was quick and easy with etrailer.com. The warranty replacement was handled directly by Konig.

Fantastic product! The chains were easy to set up and install on my Audi Q7. They worked perfectly. You will never find better customer service than what I received from etrailer.com and Konig (Pewag). I wish all companies were that good!

Really clever design! I immediately fitted them to my Mini Countryman (with 205/55 R17 tires) and, in the driveway at least, they went on easily and worked exactly as advertised. I can see how putting them on in snow will be less messy than with regular chains, so I'll head to the mountains with less anxiety next time.

It fits! I have a Tesla Model S with 21" staggered wheels, I don't need chains but I must carry to comply and it gives me peace of mind. etrailer can't recommend it, but Konig's website did Say the XL K55 model fits 265/35-21. It came with 3 size of nut grabbers and nut spacers. There was no manual in the box but I found it online. The manual is needed because the chain can be made wider removing some springs and the manual says how many according to the tire size.

Customer service was very good. Chains went on as noted in the youtube video etrailer had online. I did have some difficulties getting the bolt to seat properly in the part that attaches to the lug nut. After that was figured out all went well. Only other thing of note was shipping times. Was supposed to get them within 4 days which would have been perfect as it was a few days before my trip to Mt Hood. Chains arrived 5 days after our trip. Luckily didn't need chains. Probably not the fault of etrailer as delivery with everyone is slow due to covid. I only mention this so others can use expedited shipping if they need their products right away.

This isnt directed towards etrailer, they have been nothing but amazing. overall these chains are really expensive for snow chains that will only be used a couple of times a year. The instruction manual is horrible, directions are very broad and not specific at all which was beyond frustrating. Thankfully I fitted and tested the chains at home before I went up to the snow, one chain fell off during the first test but then I put it back on and it stayed on. I haven't been to the snow with them yet, so wish me luck!

Review from a similar K-Summit in Tire Chains

The Konig self-tensioning snow chains I purchased were easy to install and worked great. However, I only used them once as a test to check them out. It had snowed just before I received them so the timing was great. I live in an area (East Tennessee) that has steep grades so I tested the chains on the grades-forward and backward while moving, stopped on the steepest grade and able to drive away without slipping, and effective when stopping. The chains were also easy to remove. I've done a lot of driving in the snow all over the US and also in Canada using a variety of chains including ice chains with v bars. The Konig chains were by far the easiest chains I've ever had to install. Incidentally, I have a Trail Rated 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited vehicle which I believe worked nicely to enhance the capabilities of both the Jeep and the chains.

Comments
Hi Patrick, Maybe its global warming but I havent had any snow required for my Konig chains. However, after my previous excellent experience that I wrote about, Im pretty sure they will work fine if needed. Many thanks for keeping in touch. Best wishes, Gary

Review from a similar K-Summit in Tire Chains

Had these K-Summit "chains" for a Toyota Corolla for 5+ years, and they worked so well that I immediately bought a new pair to fit my 2013 Honda Accord (different tire size), and they also work great. Used them the other day in 6" of unplowed snow, on the hill I live on. As long as you go slow (I usually drive < 25 MPH) they just keep moving you forward. Two quick notes: 1) I noticed going uphill that my wheels started skidding, then stopping, and repeated that annoying cycle, which made it harder than usual to continue moving forward. I quickly figured out that this was the way the anti-spin system worked on the car (which doesn't want you to spin your wheels). I disabled that and that odd behavior stopped. 2) The fitting guide, which tells you how many "links" or "regulation elements" (as the instructions calls them) to remove to fit the chain to the tire, is assuming you're placing them on all-season tires. When you use snow tires, as I do, you have to remove more links to get the chain to fit correctly. This is not a problem, but it's useful to know. The representative from Thule, the company from whom I bought my original set, admitted that they should mention this in the instruction guide.

Comments
Still great! Didn’t need them that often last season, but always nice to know they’re in the trunk if I do. Never been unable to complete trip with these “chains” attached.

Review from a similar K-Summit in Tire Chains

I am very impressed with the quality, unique design and ease of installation. I have test fit these chains to our vehicle and the fit is great for our application where the chains cannot extend to the inside of the tire as there is no clearance. Having said this, to date we have not used the chains in the snow. We live in the Sierra Mountains of California in a location where we are required to carry chains. However, in our area it is rare that the road crews have not cleared the snow to the point where four-wheel-drive will suffice. I'm assuming I would rate these chains with five stars after actual road use.

It works! Not so easy to learn how to use/installation (lack of online and general installation guide) but once figure out, it works. It's costly (10 times more expensive than normal snow chains) but I guess that's the price to pay for Porsche chain; yaiks! I wish they address those 2 issues in the future; price and installation instruction.

Review from a similar K-Summit in Tire Chains

This review relates to the product, not etrailer, as they have been a good retailer. The Konig self tensioning tire chains are a horrible product. They are poorly engineered. The instructions are average, but not detailed to the level of complication associated with the product. Installation is a two person job, and make sure you have that extra person around for a few days because they are very likely to fly off during driving. After coming off the fifth time, having been professionally installed, I pulled over and took the other off and left them for the next person to try. This is the worst winter traction device ever designed and built. I bought these due to wheel size given low profile tires and wide rims - I think I will just get some winter rims and tires and run those for four months with some simple and far less expensive (and more reliable) cable chains. I would avoid this product - etrailer has many better options for you.

Worked fine going up a mountain a couple of miles to our cabin. Over an icy trail. Unfortunately the next day going down, after we got to the bottom, discovered they both had come off! And were lost somewhere back up the mountain. Of course we could not go back to find them because we had no chains!

Fits tight as a drum! The K44 is nice and snug on my 19’s. Kinda nervous about the stress on the tensioning strap and lug nut clinchers, but these things will be sweet if the Engineers did their job right! Only plan to use these for a few miles at a time, so if all goes well they’ll last me a good long while

These things are awesome. Tahoe snow is wet and it freezes. Chains in general are a pita but these are super easy to put on and take off. No tension or torque wrench needed. They self adjust and are quick to put on. Practice first so you can pull out any of the interior links and get the fit right but after that you’re rocking and rolling. I’ve got them on my 2018 Audi Q7 with 20” All Weather run flats. I had to remove one or two of the width adjusting screws.

Review from a similar K-Summit in Tire Chains

This is an update to the review for the 2017 MINI Cooper with 205/45-17 tires. By taking off both spacers (red and silver), I was able to get the chains to center on the tire - I might even be able to put one of the chain tightening screws back on, maybe more as the tread wears down. So I think they're going to work well this winter. I'll bump the review up to five stars when I can figure out how to get them to easily fit into the carrying case.

Comments
These worked great. The first time I used them, I didnt tighten the screw enough and one of the chains came off while driving. But after learning to tighten them enough, I had no problems. It was a mild winter, but at least I know that driving 20 miles in 5 of unplowed snow up the mountain highway isnt a problem. And I finally figured out how to get them back into the case.

Review from a similar K-Summit in Tire Chains

These are adapters to allow the associated chain set fit some uncommon tire lugs. The adapters work flawlessly. Ordered them for the chain set as the rims on my vehicle require them. Fit perfectly as did the chains after adjustment. However, I don't know how well they actually work on snow and ice. Based on experience with a number of other chain sets I see no reason to doubt their reliability and efficiency. Backstory: Ordered a set for a trip to Colorado over Christmas & New Year's as we were expecting snow and ice as we were planning to travel to Estes Park, Denver, Colorado Springs, Salida, Buena Vista, Leadville, etc. Received our order quickly and correctly. Tried chains on tires and made fitting adjustments per instructions for exact tire size. Played with the chains a few times to make sure I knew how to get them deployed quickly. They are extremely easy to put on once they are adjusted. Watch the video - it really is that easy. Fast forward a few weeks, we went on our trip. Got not much more than a dusting the whole trip and never had to put the chains on. Meanwhile, back home, there were something like 129,000 poor bxxxxxxs waiting for the roads to be cleared and power to be restored from the huge ice and snow storms. At the end of our trip we drove home over clear roads surrounded by big piles of plowed snow. Arrived home to find our neighbors huge tree uprooted and blown over. We didn't receive any damage. Next day got the hound out of doggie jail pretty much as if nothing had happened. I like these chains!

Review from a similar K-Summit in Tire Chains

We have a BMW X3 in the foothills of the Sierras and need to have chains on hand. Normal chains are not an option for the BMW X3. On the surface theses seem like a very slick product. In reality maybe for some. There are limited Choices for the X3, The K-Summit Size: K45 seem OK but I have issues and concerns. Once received you have to fit the chains to your tires. DO HIS IN THE GARAGE BEFORE YOU GO ANYWHERE. Doing this on the road in the snow would be a pain. If you like IKEA you’ll love the instructions. (Well maybe not that bad). Go on-line and look at some videos. I needed to remove 4 “regulation elements” on each chain to fit our tires. Tools are provided but I used a metric socket and a cordless drill to help with this and it took maybe 5 minutes. With hand tools the 8 total “elements’ would have taken 20 or more. Now basically shove the chain more or less in place with plastic “pads at 10:00, 2:00, 4:00 and 8:00 O’Clock positions on the tire. Next make sure you have the correct size lug nut adapter and the proper spacing from the rim. Supposedly just put the adaptor on a lug, with the indicating tip toward the rim center and tighten the bolt with the supplied wrench. I found issues with the 17mm lug adapter and the 17mm BMW lug. The BMW lug is not very tall and the adapter never felt very securely seated to me. (Yes I made sure the adapter is seated correctly in the “cup”; instructions mention this). This may be better on other vehicles. Lastly, pull the crank until you see the red line on the nylon strap. Dive forward 50 feet or so so the chains will move onto the tire. We got out of the car to check and it still required a couple of short toe kicks to fully get them securely on. In summary they seem to “work OK”. I didn’t find any better options available for the X3. Once set up they are fairly easy to install with the exception of the lug nut connection which I found insecure and fussy on the X3. The plastic components give me concern for durability. Will they become brittle and break in cold temperatures or over extended use? Time will tell. Very costly if there is a failure on the road warrantee not withstanding.

Very unique design. Do set them up and put them on before you really need them. The screws that adjust the size do take some time to remove. Unlike others, I had few to no issues getting them off. They fit snuggly on my tires. They were a little hard to get off after releasing the tension, but I guess that is good too. I will have to wait until I need them to put them to the ultimate test.

Review from a similar K-Summit in Tire Chains

Bought these chains for a Tesla Model S with standard 19" wheels. Came with the 21mm lug nut adapter, and fits when following the instructions. (Instructions are not great, and it was hard to believe the chains would pull themselves onto the tires with how tight they were - but they did)

This is only option that does not drape over the inside of the sidewall of the vehicle so it's the best low clearance option.
