1. Count the lug holes
Look at the wheel hub or the back of the wheel and count how many lug holes there are(also called bolt holes).
Common configurations include: 4-lug, 5-lug, 6-lug and 8 lug
2a. For even lug counts (4-lug, 6-lug, 8-lug)
Measure from the center of one lug hole directly across to the center of the hole opposite it.
Common configurations: 4 on 4", 6 on 5.5", 8 on 6.5"
2b. For odd lug counts (5-lug)
Measure from the center of one lug hole to the outer edge of the hole directly across (not center-to-center since there's no directly opposite hole).
Common configurations: 5 on 4.5" (most popular), 5 on 5", 5 on 4.75", 5 on 5.5"

Today, we're going to take a look at this Americana 15 inch by six inch galvanized eight spoke steel trailer wheel, with the five on four and a half inch bolt pattern. Now this is a sturdy steel construction. This one is the eight spoke design with the galvanized finish and the galvanized finish will provide superior protection from rust and corrosion. It's mainly used in marine applications, like on a boat trailer.
This is a nice high quality wheel. Does meet the DOT, Department of Transportation, specifications. A few specs on this. We're going to measure the diameter and the width. And the diameter, when you measure diameter, it's always going to be measured inside the inside.
So if we take our tape measure.If we go inside, inside, all the way across, you're looking at 15 inch diameter. The width on the wheel, is inside to inside also. So there's your six inch wide. And the bolt pattern on this wheel is a five on four and a half inch bolt pattern. And if you want to measure that on a wheel, that's an odd number of lugs, like in this case, five.
What you want to do is pick any hole, let's say this one, and then you're going to measure across to either one of these holes. But when you measure it, it's from the center of the starting hole to the furthest edge of whichever hole you measure to. So on this wheel, it'll measure four and a half inches. So it's a five lug four and a half inch bolt pattern.This wheel does use a wheel lug size of a half inch by 20 and the pilot hole diameter, which is the large hole here in the center of the wheel, that is 3.19 inches. Now this wheel does not come with a center cap.
If you do want to purchase the center cap, we do sell those separately. You just want to make sure that the center cap diameter will also be the same as the pilot hole, so 3.19 inches. And the weight capacity on this wheel is 2,150 pounds. But that should do it for the review on the Americana 15 inch by six inch galvanized eight spoke steel trailer wheel, with the five on four and a half inch bolt pattern.

I reached out to the manufacturer in regard to the performance of the rims. I found that you would want to use a torque wrench versus an impact wrench, preferably one that clicks, otherwise the possibility of over-torque on the lugs is very real, as in this situation. If an impact wrench is the only option, it should be set to the lowest setting and used with extreme caution.
