Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located in your rear cargo area. You will have to remove the rear scuff panel and interior side panels to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Need the video provided by Etrailer. Instructions for product lame. But with video, installation is a walk in the park.

by:
2018 Hyundai Santa Fe

The only problem I had was that the video was for a 2016 Hyundai Sante Fe, and mine was a 2018. It just required the additional removal of the container behind the jack storage container. Then, after removing three screws fastening each side panel to the floor I was able to access the wiring, and complete the job. It saved me hundreds of dollars doing it myself.

C56184, and the trailer hitch. This could have been a disaster had they not been any videos with step by step footage. The trailer hitch was so simple. 30 min by muselfnit was up. The wiring harness another hour, but its professionaly done and hidden. Very easy to follow along with the video. Thanks to etrailer for the instructional videos.

by:
2015 Hyundai Santa Fe

Got this hitch to be able to add a bike rack. Didn’t like the idea of having a rack that hooked on with straps, especially 3 bikes now and another 2 later.
The product came really quick and please watch installation video before installing. Saves a lot of time and you learn a few tricks while watching video. The hardest party was the wiring. Direction were easy, but recommend having 2 people for the job. Helps a lot.

We have bought other products from etrailer and are always pleased with our products. We just finished with the hitch and wiring and are happy with it all. Thank you for everything.

PERFECT FIT for our new 2015 vehicle! Very high quality product. Very well packaged. Thanks to your youtube installation video my husband had the hitch installed BY HIMSELF with no lift, no special equipment in about 30 minutes. Now he tackles the wiring.....We saved $350 over what our local trailer hitch installer quoted......thanks!

Its now been a year since purchasing and installing our hitch and it looks like it did a year ago - new. No quality or performance issues. No wiring issues. We use the hitch frequently for small jobs that require our utility trailer. We still believe that this was a great decision on our part to go with etrailer.

your product, a tow hitch was excellent as per the installation of your video concerning the tow hitch somewhat disappointed with no video for the wiring of the 2014 7 seater SUV Santa Fe Hyundai.overall experience was excellent as the product also was superior. an instructional video showing how the wiring harness was to be installed would have been a much better choice than a diagram on paper so if all possible please make the video for this particular vehicle thank you

I found that the product was extremely well made and have used it well since installed. The directions were very accurate and the installation went well for a Senior Citizen. I would recommend that the wiring be installed into some plastic tubing to protect it wiring run from the road stones and suspension abrasion from the battery location to remote control box. It took my longer to install but it fit beautifully on my Hyundai Santa Fe Sport.

This unit was well worth the cost and first class in design and fabrication!!

This system looks and works well. Cant beat the quality and no indication of surface problems looks as good now as the day I installed it!!!

It's great that this kit gets its own power right from the battery and doesn't present a load to the tail light circuitry of the car. It's easy to install and would have been even easier if I had access to my ramps when I did the installation. You really will need good access to the bottom of the car for installing the wire up to the battery.

Definitely watch the instructional video!!

I wish there was better information about the connectors already in place on my car. There might be a different kit I should have bought that would plug directly into those connectors. Anyway, this kit works well and wasn't difficult to install.

Usually the connectors you located wont be active unless the vehicle was equipped with the factory tow package.

Etrailer does it again, install video made the job easy. System works great, only wish I had done more research on or '15 Santa Fe. It is wired for the tow package so I could have gone with the easer install/system. Hardest part for me was snaking the power wire to the battery.

I'm 70 and had no trouble installing it myself, with the help of a friend to help hold it in place while the first couple of bolts were inserted to hold it. The instructions and especially the on-line videos are priceless. Also installed the wiring kit myself and that was more time consuming, but again, the video made all the difference. If I had this job to do again I'd probably invest in a couple of ramps to make access to the undercarriage much easier. Have pulled a 6 x 12' enclosed trailer about 3500 miles since installation.

by:

I just installed the trailer hitch that fits our 2018 Santa Fe. We haven't used it yet but seems to be solid and fits exact according to the auto mechanic shop that installed the hitch for us. I plan to use it to pull a utility trailer I have. Sold my old vehicle so had to set up our Santa Fe with a hitch to take over the job of pulling the trailer. Placing the order was easy and it shipped out quickly so that was good. My mechanic said to also order the better quality wiring harness that went with the hitch; it's an add on. I scrolled down on the sight; found the accessories usually ordered with the hitch, and clicked the nicer wiring harness. Only to find out when everything arrived that the wiring harness is for the KIA; not the Hyundai. So had to exchange that. I'd suggest ` thing. 1) be sure if you order the Santa Fe hitch, the related accessories are indeed for the Hyundai; and not for the sister brand KIA. I wouldn't have know; my mechanic had to tell me. etrailer should have told me at the time of order; not my mechanic once received. It's a website image / pt # management thing . . .

But to etrailer's credit; they quickly sent out the right wiring harness that indeed fits my Santa Fe, and they easily sent me a return shipping label to UPS the wrong wiring harness back. They did it right on the phone; no questions; no delay; no cost to me.

So in the end I gave a 5 star for excellent customer service to solve the problem. I'm assuming the hitch itself will work well once I hitch it up to my trailer.

2014 Hyundai Santa-Fe

This is the 4th time I bought hitches from etrailer to put on my vehicles. The hitch, as usual, was easy to install. BUT I was irritated with the wiring. I started by using the WRITTEN instructions. After I tore apart the rear end of my wife's $50000 SUV the instructions were WRONG! I calmly walked back into the house, logged into etrailers website and found out the written instructions were not even close. There is a very nice video on the install on their website. DO NOT go by the written instructions. Look for the EXACT video of your EXACT installation. NOW, I will go back outside and reassemble my wife's car.

by:
2014 Hyundai Santa Fe

Connections worked perfectly. The power line to the battery was barely enough to make it, but it worked w/out having to rerun. Again the etrailer online/youtube instructions was very helpful.

Word to the wise. Before you purchase, look and see if your car is already equipped with the hitch wiring. Even though my suv did not have a hitch, when I looked under the tail, I noticed the manufacture had the wiring already there. If I had known this, I would have purchased the other wiring kit from e-trailer which is 100% easier.

by:
2014 Hyundai Santa Fe

This harness replaced a defective unit, also bought from eTrailer. Video help for the install was really good; the whole job took me about 45 mins on a 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. It has seen regular use since, mostly U-Haul trailers of different sizes. All weather conditions too.

This was my third eTrailer hitch install - 100% satisfied with all of them.

by:
2017 Hyundai Santa Fe

Kit worked well, rating for ease of install for a 2017 Santa Fe Limited Ultimate (no factory tow package). You have to take off both taillights, the rear cargo hold, the rear trim, pull up the backdoor gasket, run power under the vehicle to the battery, and cut or drill holes in the battery cover and taillight gaskets.

by:

The trailer hitch I ordered was an exact fit. I watched the installation video twice just to make sure I knew what to do. The install went without a hitch(pun intended). I opted for a different install for the wiring harness. I live in the northern climate and snow and ice are an issue here. So I wired to the battery inside the vehicle. And I also did not want my connector to hang out of my tailgate. So I went custom there as well. I will do all my business with etrailer in the future. Very fast shipping. The instructional videos these guys do, are priceless. Thank you very much to team etrailer!!!

2015 Hyundai Santa Fe

Quality product. The only thing I did different from install video was to run the battery feed wire on the inside of the truck. IMHO if you are running a harness on the exterior it needs to be in convoluted tubing . The same plastic material that is used inside the rubber boot at the tail lamp harness. I tucked the harness under the interior trim, step well covers on the drivers side and the panel at the hood release. Carefully poked a hole in the rubber boot where the main wire harness goes through the fire wall. This comes out just below and to the right of the brake booster.

by:
Hyundai Santa Fe

The Curtis trailer hitch fit perfectly on our Santa Fe, without any issues. The most difficult part of the installation was taking the car apart to install the wiring harness. I suggest picking up some replacement fasteners for re-attaching the plastic auto parts, as most strip out upon removal. Also, without the benefit of a lift, running the wiring to the battery, while not "difficult", takes some real squirming. Once done, the hitch looks terrific. I can't wait to test it out!

2013 Hyundai Santa Fe

Just wrapped up the install of the Class III on my 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. Product arrived 2 days after order and looked great.

The install was super easy and I was able to do it single-handed. All mounting holes lined up perfectly and zero adjustments were needed. My skill level is average car owner and I handled this with basic tools and the included hardware. Install time for hitch was less than an hour.

Also installed the T- connector wiring harness. Like the hitch, everything matched up with no adjustments needed. Install time for harness was about an hour. Toughest part was running the power wire in a safe, professional looking manner.

All work was done on the floor in my garage. No lift necessary. I did use a hydraulic floor jack and stands, but that gave me plenty of clearance..

Thanks for a great product!

by:

Easy installation everything lined up accordingly and wiring harness was simple plug and play. No problems with either after about a year of use. Would recommend these products

by:

We are a car dealer. I have used etrailer several times for both harnesses and hitches. We install these as part of the car selling process and customers like the results.

by:

The products were excellent, very easy to put on the vehicle and good installation instructions. The youtube video for the installation was also a great help.

My only complain was shipping. I paid extra for the 3 day shipping...ordering the product on Tuesday and only got the box the following Tuesday (yes there was a holiday on Monday; but still it should it have arrive on Friday!).

Overall good experience and products.
