Video Transcript for Swagman RV Mounted 4 Bike Rack Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Swagman 4 Bike RV Mounted Bike Rack, part number S80600. As you can see, the bumper-mounted bike rack is going to allow us to transport up to 4 bikes to wherever we need to go. We are limited to 30 lb per bike. They use a very heavy duty steel construction which gets us up to that weight limit. As you can see there's also a nice, black powder coat finish. It's going to resist corrosion and keep a long-lasting good look for us.

We've got additional support bars mounted right to the frame of the rack. They come up to give us a good connection point to secure our bikes. Now that we've gone over the features of it, let me show you how to get this installed on your motorhome. As you can see, we've already got half of it installed. I just wanted to save you a little bit of time. They're going to install exactly the same way.

What we'll do is you can see I've started loosely my front set of bolts. I just do that so that when I slide it on it's going to give me a good stopping point you can see there. Then we want to adjust it, of course, so the front wheel of our bike will sit on one side and the rear wheel will sit on the other. It's adjustable as, well, as wide as your bumper is so it'll have good adaptability with a wide variety of bikes. We're going to take our two bolts and slide those right down through. They'll go through the top and then also the bottom support bar that's down here.

We've then got a washer that goes on, as well as a nylon locking nut. We thread those right on the bottom of both of our bolts. Now let's start tightening them down. Once we have our rear bolts tightened there, we'll take care of our front ones. As you can see, nice and secure, and snug.

Now two things to keep in mind. There's two special bolts. You've got a shorter set of bolts. We're going to have eight of them. Two of them are just a little bit longer. Those are designed to go through the two holes where you mount your support brackets. Same can be said for our longer bolts. We've got eight of these as well for mounting to the bumper. Two of them will be slightly longer and those are for use, here and here, on our inter 00:03:17 support bracket that goes up. So just keep that in mind. You'll have two of the longer ones that are a little bit longer, two of the shorter ones that are a little bit longer, and that's where they should go. Now that we've shown you how to install the rack, let's load it up with some bikes. As you can see, our bike rims are going to fit nicely right in between our grooves there, help support them. Of course with our handlebars, we want to put the bikes in back to front, then front to back so we'll have clearance for our bars as we do it. As we've said, this will accommodate 4 bikes. They need to be similar in wheelbase size. As you see we'll have a little bit of wiggle room here, where we can get a few longer, few shorter bikes installed, but they'll need to be pretty similar. As you can see here, we've got our 4 bikes loaded up. We've secured this side by connecting to our front support bar, and we've tied it all the way around into the frame onto our camper. We'll do the same thing here on this side, just connect into our support bar, and then we'll need to feed it in through the rims and frames of our bike. It's important to make your connection directly to the RV or camper. This is going to help us do a couple things. The first thing it's going to do is help us ensure that, in the case of some kind of unfortunate failure, that our bikes are going to stay secured to our rack. But it's also going to help us ensure that our rack stays attached to our RV or our motorhome. That's going to keep both us safe, our equipment safe, and anybody that might be driving behind us safe. See, once we've got those nice and secure, we'll be ready to hit the road and have some fun. .

It is shiny black. The instructions are great when you pay careful attention. The Youtube video was incomplete. I should do one of my own. Follow instructions carefully. Have the correct size tools before beginning. Make sure you understand where each bolt is to go. It can be tricky. Before tightening anything having to do with the bumper, place the brackets on first. The video makes it look so simple. They don't show every step. If you do tighten, they may not fit over the bumper and you will have to loosen them. Once on, they seem to be quite sturdy and I look forward to securing a few storage bins and my bike. My spare actually fit between the two brackets. I only have one bike for myself and I am glad I got the 4 bike. I can carry light items in bins. I am giving 4 stars because the end caps....do not fit! No instructions there on how to get them on. 584992

I was looking for a rack to accommodate 2 adult bikes, my bike trailer and either my kids bikes or a storage bin. My old rack was mounted to a 2" receiver mounted to bumper. My old bumper had to be repaired once since there was so much stress from the single mounting point of the bolt on hitch. I used this rack for 1 year on my old camper and it worked great. It is very sturdy, and by distributing the weight on the bumper, there was/is no movement. I loaded it down with 2 adult bikes, my bike trailer, a porta-tote, a small bin of misc hookup stuff and a large bin with hatchets, hammers, kindling, etc (very heavy). It held up great. It worked so well, and was in such good shape that I kept it and I have mounted it to my new 5th wheel. So far so good. The only thing I have done is replaced the 8 bolts that mount to the bumper with grade-8 since the old grade 5 lock nuts were not in that great a shape. I highly recommend this rack. This was to replace a 2" 248242

Still love it, pack all my gear and bikes, and no movement. Recommend to anyone with a sturdy bumper

Easy to mount, and four bikes fit fine. I wanted a platform rack, and I need to carry four bikes, so there are not many choices. Construction seems sturdy. Even though I tightened it fully down, it still has little play, but nothing to worry if you load it with your bikes. Just did a longer trip with four bikes on a 30ft TT, they did not move a bit. I now have to figure out a more efficient way to tie the bikes down. 395797

For the few times we take bikes with us, it has worked out well. I use pool noodles over the bike frames and rack bars to keep from scratching the paint off the bikes. I spaced them for adult bikes, so the kids bikes don't sit down tight. I've just used the 1" tie ratchet straps and rubber straps to hold everything down. It can be challenging to get 4 bikes secure, but I haven't lost one yet. There really aren't any good spots to hook into, so I may modify accordingly. I would probably by them again. 270922

So far, so good. Assembles well. Watch the video for helpful tips provided by etrailer. Lock washers are flimsy- they squish out rather than staying in place- heavier gauge lock washers needed here. Was actually able to vary the width of the rack by having the racks angle inward- helps to seat the bikes in the grooves better. Long trip ahead of us- I'll be able to speak more to the overall performance and quality by the end of July. 260328

solid construction, easy assembly, I had to make some adjustments to work around my spare tire.(moved the tire over 4 inches)The two bike model would not have worked. I am using the 4 bike carrier for two bikes and could carry a third in the outer slots if necessary. 50793

I like the looks of this bike carrier. It would appear the bikes will not bang together while traveling. Not sure if I understand how the bikes are tied down. Doesnt appear to be any uprights to tie the bike to. Please clarrify. Thanks.

The tie-down method is up to the end user. We recommend something like ratchet straps or cam-buckle straps that will not give or flex like a bungee cord would. Part 05605 is a 4 pack of cam-buckle straps that we recommend for this rack.

Thanks for this comment. I am looking for a bike rack that will go alongside a spare tire mount I need to carry three or four bikes. Would you possibly have a picture of your set up that you could send?

Absolutely love this four bike rack! I was under the impression that there would never be a safe and effective way to carry all four of our family's bikes off the back end of our 30 ft. travel trailer but I was wrong! This works exactly as described. My husband and I installed it and with the tie downs we were on our way. We did find that on our maiden voyage with the rack the bikes "fell" into each other a bit and that caused the tie downs to loosen. We now make sure that we secure them as tight as possible next to each other and we have solved the problem. We also decided to remove it every year and store it in our garage when we winterized our trailer to keep it out of the elements. Very secure and it's excellent to have the bikes out of the trailer where we used to have to store them!! VERY glad we purchased it. 390061

satisfied with product the only thing that I would change would be the width of tire slots we have mountain bikes tire slots are not wide enough for tires to fit into, other than that we are well pleased with product. NOTE: we let air out of tires so they would fit in slots 524268

Love the product. Was very easy to install. My only issue is that we have to remove our spare tire when using the rack as it gets in the way of the bikes. 509151

We mounted this bike rack on the back bumper of our 23' travel trailer after having problems with other racks and it has worked flawlessly. Our three bikes remained stationary and secure while we traveled in our RV continuously for 11 months and over 15,000 miles around the whole US. 427310

Very solid rack. We love how stout it is. It's mounted to the rear of a 28' fifth wheel. I cannot see it while I'm towing but I never worry about it. I replaced the factory rear bumper with heavy gauge thick walled 4" tube steel. I used the quality hardware that came with it. The only down side is tying down the bikes. We have 4 bikes if different sizes. Seems like I spend 15 minutes attaching enough bungee cords and tie downs to make the load road worthy. You can't just crank a ratchet strap because the tires sit in saddles and you can easily overcompress the tire tubs with the force of a ratchet strap. One year later and it's still rock solid. 391062

Ordering and timely delivery were excellent. Assembly was easy. All parts fit, all were in the box, and all the weld joints were tight and strong. This is a very beefy piece of hardware. Heavy gauge steel. I recommend watching the video about assembly; it answered some questions before they came up. One it's installed on our fifth wheel and gets some miles hauling bikes, hopefully I'll be ready to add the fifth star to my rating. So far, so good. 383708

Comments

The rack met our needs and expectations. It’s strong and stable and the only rear-bumper rack I would trust on a towed vehicle. The only compromise is having to put the spare tire in the front bin of our fifth wheel. I now give it five stars.

Excellent product - did have a little problem installing the bike rack, but with the training video was able to complete the install about 40minutes or less. The bike rack is pretty sold even sat on it, so if it can hold my weight (190) I don't see any problems holding my three bikes. 356252

Thanks for your review and your business, Leroy! The capacity of this bike rack is limited to the capacity of the bumper on your RV or travel trailer. I recommend you check your manual to verify.

by:

Let me start by saying; This is a very secure product, well made and study. I realize that manufactures try to make their product fit as many campers as possible. On my 5th wheel unit the verticle up-right closest to the camper would not fit, there is not enough room for it and the bike rack to fit under the base of the camper. The position for the rear bumper prohibits this from happening, the front of the bumper tucks under the rear of the camper. To help stablize my bicycles more, I drilled an additional hole in this up-right and mounted it to the opposite side of the rack in the same position of the other verticle up-right, using longer bolts, it works great now. I'm sure this voided my warranty, Oh well. 186420

Do you have a question about this RV and Camper Bike Rack?

  • Recommended Bike Rack for Carrying Adult Trike Behind RV
  • We do have a couple options for standard hitch-mounted bike racks that are specifically designed for adult trikes, such as the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider # HR1000R-TRKADP. The issue though, is that only certain bike racks are rated for use behind RVs and trailers, and the available trike racks are not rated for this application. This is simply because of the extra movement that occurs on a bike rack that is mounted to the rear of a trailer or RV, as opposed to behind a standard passenger...

  • As you probably know there are only certain bike racks that are rated for use at the back of an RV or trailer. I have included a link to the ones that carry 4 bikes for you. If the bumper is 4 inches square you can use the Swagman rack # S80600 which you can position around the spare tire if you want. I have linked a video review of this rack for you. If your Jayco trailer has a 2 inch trailer hitch at the back then I recommend the Swagman Trailhead # S63381. This is a hanging style...

  • Platform Style Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Rack that Can Expand from 2 to 4 Bikes
  • We do have a few bike racks that can expand from 2 to 4 bikes but the Swagman rack for RV bumpers # S64663 is not one of them. If you need a rack at the back of an RV or trailer that holds 4 bikes then there are only certain bike racks that you can use. I have included a link to them for you. Not all bike racks are rated for the back of an RV or trailer. For a 4-bike rack that attaches to a 4 inch continuous welded steel bumper on an RV or trailer I recommend Swagman rack # S80600. This...

  • Recommended Bike Racks for 2014 Forest River Flagstaff RV
  • I have a couple great options for transporting your bikes with your 2014 Forest River RV. The Swagman Original - 4 Bike Rack # S64400 that you referenced in your question is rated for use with campers and RVs. If you want to continue using this rack on the back of your RV, you will simply need to install a trailer hitch. The Curt Adjustable Width Trailer Hitch Receiver for RVs # 13703 is a great option. The heavy-duty side brackets on this hitch allow for maximum adjustability as they...

  • RV Rated Spare Tire Bike Rack Recommendation for an Aliner Camper Trailer
  • There are no spare tire bike racks rated for an RV or camper spare tire. However, if your Aliner's bumper is rated for towing and/or carrying weight, we offer several bike rack options that are rated for use behind a camper. Take a look at the Swagman Around the Spare Mighty Rack, # S80501. This rack is designed to fit a 4 to 4-1/2 inch continuous welded square bumper and fit around the spare tire. I have included a link to the installation details and a video review for reference. Another...

  • How to Determine if a Trailer has a Continuous Welded Steel Bumper
  • You will want to check all around the bumper for a weld seam that extends the entire length of the bumper. It would likely be at the back or bottom so I cannot tell from the pictures. You would also want to contact the trailer manufacturer and make sure the bumper is rated for weight carrying. There are only certain racks that can be used at the back of a trailer like you said. We have a whole section dedicated just to the compatible racks. I have linked them for you.

  • Recommended 4-Bike Rack for Forest River Trailer with Rear Mounted Spare Tire
  • The only 4-Bike bumper rack we have available that may work with the spare tire on your Forest River Trailer is the Swagman 4 Bike Rack # S80600. This bike rack is designed to attach to 4 or 4-1/2 inch continuous welded steel square bumpers. The first bike will sit 4-3/4 inches reaward of the bumper on your trailer. If the distance from the rear of the bumper to the outer edge of the spare tire on your trailer is less than 4-3/4 inches, this rack will work without any interference. Another...

  • Recommendation For RV Rated Bike Racks For 6 Bikes On 2016 Palomino Solaire 267bhse
  • For a bike rack on your 2016 Palomino Solaire 267BHSE, I recommend the Swagman 4 Bike Carrier RV Mounted Bike Rack # S80600. I recommend using tie-downs like # 05605 to secure your bikes in place and # CAB-10 cable lock to deter theft. There is not a 6 bike RV carrier available, so I recommend using a second rack and putting it in a separate location. Because you have an A-frame trailer, I recommend the Stromberg Carlson Bike Bunk Trailer-Mounted Bike Rack Carrier for A-Frame Trailers...

  • Availability Of Hitch Bike Rack To Fit On the Rear Of a Travel Trailer
  • When using a 2-inch hitch adapter that clamps to your 4-inch square RV bumper on a travel trailer you will not want to exceed the limits of your bumper. The bumper towing and tongue capacities may be indicated on the bumper itself, but if not you could check your trailers owner manual or contact the manufacturer of your travel trailer. Also remember when using a bolt-on adapter your bumper needs to be a 4x4 inch continuous-weld steel bumper. It cannot be used on spot welded or aluminum...

  • Potential Trike Rack to Use at Rear of RV
  • You could potentially carry a trike on the Swagman bike carrier # S80600. Out of the available options for carriers rated for use at the back of an RV or trailer, this is the only one that could potentially hold the trike. The part # S80605 that you referenced would be smaller and would not fit a trike as well. The # S80600 is 34 inches wide so it would be wide enough for the trike but it might get interesting trying to also carry a standard bicycle as well.

  • Recommended RV Bike Racks to Transport 5 Bikes on 5th Wheel Trailer
  • Any bike rack (or other accessory) installed on the rear of a trailer will be subjected to severe up-and-down and side-to-side forces. Bike racks designed for trailer use are built specifically to handle those stresses but there are no 5-bike racks suitable for use on the back of a 5th wheel trailer. The maximum capacity for a trailer-rated bike rack is 4 bikes. I do have a way for you to load 5 bikes but it will require you to use 2 racks, and one of those will have to be a ladder-mount...

  • Recommendations For Carrying 6 Bikes On Back Of 2015 Coachmen Catalina Travel Trailer
  • We do offer a 4-bike carrier for the back of an RV or camper. It is the Swagman 4 Bike Carrier, part # S80600. This bike rack does require that the bumper is a continuous welded steel square bumper is between 4 and 4-1/2 inches wide. Aluminum or spot-welded bumpers are not an option for this bike rack. The bike rack does limit the weight of each bike to 30 lbs. If you have the room, you may be able to also use a ladder-mount bike carrier like part # SP501BR. This will work with any...

  • Rack with 4 Bike Capacity Needed for Rear of a Salem RV
  • We do offer bike racks that can utilize the ladder on the rear of the trailer, like the Swagman RV and Motorhome 2 Bike Carrier, part # S80630. Unfortunately, these racks only have a two bike capacity. Depending on the size and construction of the rear bumper, a bumper mounted receiver like the Swagman part # S64025 would be a good option for a 4 x 4 inch continuous-welded steel bumpers. This receiver is not compatible with aluminum or spot-welded steel bumpers. Using a bolt on receiver...

  • Bike Rack for 4 Bikes for the Bumper on a 2017 Rockwood Ultra Light Travel Trailer
  • There are only certain bike racks that are rated for use at the back of an RV or trailer. I have included a link to them for you. The Kuat NV # NV22G-NA22G is not rated for use on a RV or trailer so I cannot recommend it. What I do recommend is the Lets Go Aero BikeWing T4 4-Bike Rack - 2" Hitches - Tilting - Horizontal Wheel Mount Item # B01458 which is rated for use at the back of a trailer or RV. As a 4-bike rack that holds the bike at the wheels it is surprising light weighing in...

  • Recommended Bike Rack for Use in Hitch on 5th Wheel Trailer
  • We do offer bike racks that are rated to handle the extra stresses found at the rear of a 5th wheel or travel trailer. Such bike racks are made to withstand the powerful lateral and vertical forces found at the back of trailers, forces that would destroy a standard automobile-type rack. The linked page displays all RV-rated bike racks. These include 2-inch hitch-mount hanging style racks like the Swagman Original 3 Bike Rack # S64152-2 and the Reese Eclipse 4-bike rack # 63124. • There are no RV-rated bike racks that offer a 5-bike capacity. The most bikes an RV-rated bike rack can hold is 4, as with the hitch-mount racks like the Swagman Original # S64400 and their Trailhead # S63381. Other 4-bike rack types are available, such as the bumper-mount Swagman 4 # S80600 which requires no hitch but which does require that your rear bumper be steel, 4- to 4-1/2-inches wide and be continuously welded along its entire length. All RV-rated 4-bike carriers can be seen...
