SmartPlug vs. Twist Lock
RV and boat owners have long relied on Twist Lock style connections for powering their rides. For years, it has been the best option for connecting to shore power. It's been reliable, but most know it's not without disadvantages:
SmartPlug's connector addresses each of these concerns and does all of the heavy lifting.
Locking arms grab the inlet, a clamp inside the plug body holds the cord, the inlet cap snaps to the top while in use, and the integrated seals weatherproof the connection. This helps prevent the wiggly, dirty connections that increase electrical resistance, which creates potentially dangerous heat.
Since it uses a square plug face, SmartPlug is able to use flat pins which create far more surface contact, further reducing the risk of high heat and electrical arcing. The square shape and flat pins also make it easy to plug in - no more twisting or guessing if the pins are lined up correctly.

Hello, everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at this SmartPlug kit with the 30 foot long 30 amp RV power cord and the 30 amp RV power inlet. Now, this power cord will give you 30 feet to reach from your RV to your power receptacle. On one end is this female plug which will connect to a 30 amp SmartPlug inlet on your RV. That inlet is included with this kit.
And on the other end of this cord, the male plug will connect to a 30 amp outlet on your electrical box. Now, the number one cause of shore power failure and fires is not electrical shorting, but rather overheating caused by poor electrical connection. The problem with many of the plug designs is the shape of the electrical pins which allow for very little contact area. And the pins are also largely responsible for bearing any of the physical stress that is placed on the cord. For instance, if you get movement in the RV and the cord bustles around, if you got someone tripping on the cord, other things like that will do constantly move the cord and cause it to have a bad connection.
So, what's nice is this SmartPlug cord protects against those overheating issues and connections. Basically, loose connections are addressed by this sleeve design right here you can see. We're gonna zoom in to show you what we're talking about. You can see this nice heavy-duty sleeve design. And the multi-point locking system which should take all the physical stress off the pins while securely fastening the plug to the receptacle.
You can see on your receptacle right here, if you open it up and then you go to plug it in, what happens is when you push it all the way in, you can hear it on each side, these will lock into place so it's secure. It's not coming out. And then, the other nice thing is the pin contact areas increase by more than 20 times. And it's protected behind three weatherproof seals for a nice dry and corrosion-free connection. And also, if you notice when you plug this in, it's just basically a straight-in connection.
Makes plugging in very easy even when it's dark out. And those triple weatherproof seals will prevent water corrosion and overheating. Now, the other nice thing on this plug is if you look at the very top of it, right here, that's actually an LED reverse polarity indicator light that confirms your correct connection. So, when you plug this in to your inlet, if the light stays off, that means there's no power so you probably have a problem with the inlet there. Now if the blue comes on, then it means your connection is good, you're all ready to go. If the blue comes on with the red on, that means you have a reverse polarity problem. And if the, it's just red showing, that's a dangerous reverse polarity problem. You need to have something done right away. Now also, what's nice on the other end of the cord, it has this nice handle that you can pull down. It's a nice 90 degree handle that allows you to take your hand just like that. Allows for easy removal from the electrical box. So once you plug this in then you go to remove it, instead of just trying to work with pulling just the plug out, flip this handle down, grab that with your two fingers, pull it right out. Nice little feature to have. Now, on the inlet itself, the inlet mounting holes right here. These four holes, they will match the twist-type flange holes for a lot easier installation. So, you can replace the twist-type connectors with this and the flange holes will mount right up and install. Also, the inlet cap right here, it does snap onto the connector. You see this little ridge right up here. So, when you go to plug this in, once you plug it in, it locks in that way. And then you flip this cap down and that ridge will lock into one of those slots. Keeps it from moving out just like that. Secures it from moving. And also, what's nice is when you do unplug, that gray cap will snap in place. Form a nice weatherproof seal on the inlet when not in use. Flip it up, you can see there's a nice seal there. Just like that. And it does come with the silicone gasket, mounting gasket here when you go to install it. Now, also has this nice cap that's included. In other words, when you're not using the cord, when it's not plugged in, you don't want this exposed. You take your cap, just push it in there, and it locks into place using the locking system. So, it gives you protection of that. When you go to connect it, just push it on that, pull the cap right off. Simple as that. Now, the construction on the cord, all the external metals are marine-grade, 316 stainless steel. The electrical pins are nickel-plated brass. All the plastics are UV and heat resistant. These parts are made in the USA. Last few specs on this, the length we mentioned is 30 feet. Amperage, 30 amps. And the voltage is 125 volts. But that should do it for the review on this SmartPlug kit with the 30 foot long 30 amp RV power cord and the 30 amp RV power inlet..
