Question:

Question about RV air-conditioner compatibility. I have a 2014 Thor Tuscany 44MT. I have a future interest in the Furrion Chill Cube 18K. Is it compatible with the Coleman system? Are there adapter cables so that it’s compatible? Two of my AC units are original and I anticipate that they will need replacing in the next year or two. My units are all ducted with no access from the inside of the coach.

Hi Richard, that’s a great question and you’re smart to look into this ahead of time before those original units need to be replaced.

The Furrion Chill Cube 18K part # FR49TD is not designed to be a direct plug-and-play replacement for a Coleman system, especially on a fully ducted setup like your Tuscany. The main issue is communication and controls, since Furrion and Coleman use different control systems and wiring, so there isn’t a simple adapter cable that will make them directly compatible. The good news is the Furrion systems come with everything you need for installation, including its own controls, so you wouldn’t be trying to reuse your existing Coleman components. Just keep in mind that means your current parts won’t be compatible.

I recommend replacing both units at the same time with a multi-zone setup using part # FR45TD along with the additional unit part # FR86PR. That’s the best way to keep everything working together properly and avoid any compatibility issues down the road.

One thing to keep in mind is that the Furrion system is designed for cooling and does not include a heat pump. I’m not sure if your current Coleman units have a heat pump, but if heating is something you rely on, you can add a heat strip like part # FR63PR. That will help take the chill off on cooler mornings, but it won’t function as a primary heating source.

Overall, the Chill Cube systems are really popular for their cooling performance, especially in larger coaches. Where do you love taking your Tuscany, scorching deserts, humid coasts, or cooler mountains?

Heather, that’s what I guessed about the new AC. I have a Micro-Air EasyTouch RV thermostat for all 3 zones which controls the Aquahot Hydroponic heater on 2 of the 3 zones. So I guess if I upgrade to the new ChillCube AC that I would have to maintain that part of the system (Heater, remote temperature sensors and thermostat) for the heater and use a separate remote for the new AirConditioners? Also is the remote or ChillCube AirConditioner WiFi enabled. I use the Micro-Air thermostat and an app on my phone to ensure my coach stays conditioned due to pets being in the coach when we are away. Does the ChillCube have an app?

@RichardB I do know that some Micro-air EasyTouch thermostats are designed to work with Furrion systems. Do you know which model thermostat you have? I want to be sure before I say yes.

@RickB Thanks for that info, that helps a lot. Your Micro-Air EasyTouch 355 is designed to work with Coleman systems, so it won’t be compatible with the Furrion Chill Cube. That means if you go with the Chill Cube, your current thermostat would still be able to run your AquaHot system, but not the new AC units. You could keep things split like you mentioned with your existing thermostat handling heat and a separate Furrion control for the AC, but I know that’s not ideal when you’re trying to keep an eye on temps for pets. The standard Furrion setup uses a wall thermostat like the FACW12APZA, and while you can use the Furrion Control app, it’s Bluetooth-based, so it only works when you’re within range of the coach, not for remote monitoring. If having that long-distance visibility from your phone is important, the better route would be to switch over to a Micro-Air thermostat that’s designed for Furrion systems, like the ASY-353. That would give you both WiFi and Bluetooth control so you can monitor and adjust temps remotely again, similar to what you’re doing now. So really it comes down to this, you can run separate systems and controls, or swap to a Furrion-compatible Micro-Air thermostat to keep everything tied into one app. When you’re away from the coach, are you mostly checking temps for peace of mind with the pets or actively adjusting things throughout the day?
