Ordered the hitch extender for my motorhome because my trailer had a short hitch and the back of the motorhome would hit the front of the trailer. Installed the product and left the next morning with a race car and trailer in tow. Went approximately 250 miles and had no issues and the hitch extender. It worked perfectly. 751302

In that I'm into Kayak fishing, I often go off the beaten trail to find launch points. As a result I need to back my trailer into some very tight areas and I simply could not do so without my extender. The only reason I did not give this a 5 star, is because of the safety chains. I had to extend them and then Velcro them around the extender to prevent them from dragging the ground. It would be great if there were guides or mount points on the extender for the chains. 273189

It works great,by moving the trailer back from the vehicle you can load longer items,so there are not hanging over the back of the trailer. It also helps in the backing of the trailer. Thank You 261131

I had bought and returned 3 extenders made and sold by others prior to getting the Brophy 14" Extender. The Brophy is far more superior than the others. The solid shank is much longer than the others, and it extends into the hollow end by more than 2" than the others, which makes it more heavy duty than the other less expensive exterders. I placed this extender on the rear of a Sprinter RV to hold a 4 tray Kuat Bike Rack. With the superior quality of the Brophy, I'm now comfortable placing 4 high end bikes on the rack and it's SOLID. 170162

Ask the Experts about this Brophy Hitch Adapters

  • Longest Hitch Extender with Highest Capacity for Dolly Towing Vehicle Behind Motorhome
The longest hitch extension for a 2 inch receiver with the highest towing capacity is the # RP11004 from Reese. The extender has a 4000 lb towing capacity. Keep in mind that using an extender like this particular one will lower your hitch towing and tongue weight capacity by 35 percent. The tongue weight shouldn't be an issue, because car dollies typically don't have a tongue weight much more than 100 lbs. The weight of the car plus the weight of the dolly couldn't exceed the 4000 lb towing...

  • Can the Hitch Extender For 2" Trailer Hitch Receiver 14" Long Be Used for a 5,000 Lb Boat
The Hitch Extender For 2" Trailer Hitch Receiver 14" Long part # HE12 as with any hitch extender will reduce the towing weight capacity of the vehicle. The amount at which the weight capacity is reduced will be 1/3 of the capacity or 3,500 lbs, whichever is lower. For example, if the vehicle is rated to tow 5,000 lbs then the new towing weigh capacity while using the extender is around 1,666 lbs. In regards to tongue weight which is the downward force on the receiver tube, this will be...

  • Hitch Extender for 2" Trailer Hitch Receiver to Tow 3,000 lb Trailer With Tailgate Down
To tow with the tailgate down on your 2015 Ram 1500, what you'll need is a hitch extender, and the best option is the Hitch Extender For 2" Trailer Hitch Receiver - 14" Long # HE12. This will give you plenty of room to put your tailgate down and tow 3,000 lbs. Keep in mind extenders will reduce your hitch capacity (including tongue weight), and most reduce it by a full one-half, but this extender only reduces it by one-third. This reduction should not be an issue for a hitch on a truck...

  • Availability of 10 Inch Hitch Extender
I am sorry, but a 10 inch hitch extender is not currently available. We do have a 14 Inch Trailer Hitch Extender, part # HE12. Please note that using a hitch extender will lower the tongue weight capacity of the hitch maximum downward force that can be applied to the receiver by 50 percent. If your hitch currently has a 350 pound tongue weight capacity, using the extender will lower it by half to 175 pounds. This would mean that the weight of the bike rack as well as the bikes attached...

  • Could a Hitch Extender be Used on a Chevy Silverado Towing a Pop Up Camper with Class V Hitch
The Hitch Extender # HE12 that you referenced has 350 lbs of tongue weight and 3,500 total trailer weight capacity. If the trailer you have when it is fully loaded with your dirt bike weighs less than those figures then yes the # HE12 should work well for you. Normally we remind people that hitch extenders cut the capacity of hitches in half, but since you have a Class V hitch on your Silverado and you are only towing a pop up the reduced capacity should not be an issue for you. I...

  • Will Use of Brophy Hitch Extender # HE12 Improve Handling of 16-ft Travel Trailer When Towed
As you noted, using any hitch extender or adapter will have the negative side-effect of reducing the tongue weight capacity of your hitch. In your case your specified factory hitch rating will be cut in half by use of an extender. The hitches we offer for your Ram 1500 (please see link provided) include both Class III and Class IV types. These vary in their tongue weight and gross towing weight capacities and even if your trailer weight is within the reduced hitch capacity (if used with...

  • Using a Hitch Extender on a Toyota RAV4 when Towing a Dirt Bike
We strongly recommend not hauling any more than the lowest rated component of your system. You must also keep in mind that using an extender decreases the hitch tongue weight capacity by 50%. This would mean your hitch tongue weight capacity would be only 175 lbs. It would not be safe to carry more than 175 lbs with your hitch and extender. This set up will not work to safely haul your dirt bike. Your best bet is to find a carrier with a longer shank so no extender is required or find another...

  • Is There A Standard Size for a 2 Inch Receiver
As you've discovered, a 2 inch receiver doesn't always measure exactly two inches by two inches. There is a manufacturing tolerance involved that allows the receiver to be a few hundredths of an inches larger or smaller than 2 inches, but still be within tolerance. Due to the fact that the connection between a hitch receiver and the shank of a ball mount or hitch mounted accessory isn't meant to be a precision fit, the tolerances are generous. These tolerances are common in manufactured...

  • Hitch Extender Recommendation for Hummer H2 Needing Clearance for Trailer Towing
We offer several hitch extenders that could work for you. But you should note that any time you use a hitch extender you end up cutting the capacity of the hitch in half. The Hitch Extender # HE12 that you referenced would give you an additional 12 inches of length added to your hitch. You would need to measure your setup to determine if that would give you enough clearance. For a shorter extender you would want the part # HE06 that would give you an additional 7 inches of clearance.

A hitch extender like # HE12 will extend your hitch to allow you to lower your tail gate, however it will also cut the tongue weight of your hitch by 50%. You will want to check the hitch tongue weight rating on your F-150 to see if it can handle the weight. For some hitches you will be surpassing it already, and for others, you will be able to add the extension.

You will want to check out the hitch you have installed on your 2007 Ford E-350 Van to see what the towing weight capacity and tongue weight capacity your hitch is when considering a hitch adapter. Using a hitch adapter like the Brophy Hitch Extender, part # HE12, will reduce the towing and tongue weight capacity of your hitch by 50 percent. If your hitch is rated for more than 4,000 lbs, you should be fine using this adapter, but I would check the tongue weight and weight of the fully-loaded...

  • Why Do Hitch Extenders Reduce Hitch Capacity
Hitch extenders like the Kuat # HL20B and similar items # C45791, # C45795 and # HE12 do give you more clearance to install a hitch accessory like the SportRack Ridge Swing 4 Bike Rack # SR2415 but the trouble is these extenders also reduce the hitch's tongue weight (TW) capacity by 50-percent. All adapters like these push the actual weight of the loaded bike rack further away from the hitch and this means the rack's weight will put more stress on the hitch. The extra connection point...

  • How do Hitch Adapters and Extenders Reduce Hitch Weight Capacities
Using an additional extender, like part # HE12, is very different than the rack, like part # K2TMC201, having a lengthy shank. The extenders like part # HE12 are usually made of two different sized pieces of steel that are welded together. The HE12 uses a 2x2 outer dimension piece of solid steel that inserts into the hitch. Welded to the other end, is a piece of tube with a 2x2 inside dimension. That joint is a weak spot. This is a large part of why most of the extenders have a 50 percent...

I would recommend using the Hitch Extender For 2 inch Trailer Hitch Receiver 14 inches, item # HE12, to provide the clearance you will need to mount your bike rack. • Can CURT Aluminum Cargo Carrier be Used with a Hitch Extended on a 2010 Toyota Tacoma
First, I need to tell you that the use of a hitch extender will reduce the tongue weight capacity of the hitch by 50 percent. It looks like the hitches for a 2010 Toyota Tacoma have a 500 pound tongue weight capacity. With a hitch extender that capacity will be reduced to 250 pounds. If this is acceptable then will need to measure the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the basket, which should be about 8 inches, on the carrier.
