Automatic Slider Makes Cornering Easy

Most often used on trucks with 6-1/2' beds, a slider helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a slider to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

Normally, you'd have to get out of your truck and pull a lever to release the slider before every turn, but what if there was an automatic system? Imagine having 14" of extra clearance while towing your fifth-wheel trailer. Now imagine having this without needing get out of the truck to move your slider. The Demco Hijacker Autoslide makes this fantasy a reality. The Autoslide automatically glides back smoothly when you make a sharp turn so you can maneuver effortlessly around tight corners within campsites and parking lots.

Demco Hijacker Autoslide

The base of the Autoslide has a built-in rack-and-pinion gear system that operates automatically. As your truck turns, the pinion in the base also turns. This activates the rack gear, which causes the rotational force of the truck to be converted into the linear sliding action of the hitch. So, when your truck makes a sharp, slow-speed turn, the gears inside the Autoslide force the hitch head to slide down toward your truck's tailgate in a smooth, controlled motion. This way, any time that your truck turns more than 10 to 15 degrees, the Autoslide will ensure that there is enough clearance for your trailer to complete the turn as well, and it will do so without any jerking or binding.

In order for the rack-and-pinion assembly to function as designed, the pin box must be stabilized on the hitch head. Normally in a fifth-wheel hitch, the king pin moves inside of the hitch head so that the trailer can turn. With the Autoslide, the king pin remains fixed inside of the jaws of the hitch and it is the hitch head itself that turns. This is thanks to the capture brackets on the sides of the head that brace the pin box from both sides to hold it in place on top of the hitch head. This is done to ensure that there is enough resistance within the hitch when your truck turns to properly activate the rack-and-pinion gear mechanism.

Demco Hijacker Autoslide capture bracket

To stabilize your pin box on the hitch head, simply push the capture brackets up against your pin box once the trailer is coupled and tighten the outer bolts and the inner jam nuts. The Autoslide head and brackets will fit standard pin boxes that are between 12" and 14" wide. If you have a Glide Ride, Mor Ryde, Trailair Tri Glide, or 5th Airborne pin box, you must install a special locking plate (sold separately) as well.

When you straighten your rig out again and your trailer moves back in line, the hitch head will rotate back to center and slide back toward the cab into the straight towing position.

Secure Wraparound Jaw with Locking Bar

Demco Hijacker Autoslide wraparound jaw and locking bar

The single-piece, strong wraparound jaw completely surrounds your trailer's king pin for 360 degrees of contact. This wraparound jaw provides a more secure connection than standard 2-piece jaws that close in on the king pin from the sides. The increased jaw-to-king-pin contact on the Autoslide offers tighter tolerances around the king pin, which minimizes both rattle and chucking, for a smooth, quiet ride.

A 3/4" solid steel locking bar spans the area in front of the jaw. This bar provides an added barrier of protection against accidental disconnection so you can have peace of mind that your trailer is secure. The locking bar is attached to the jaw and to the spring-loaded handle. The bar automatically locks when the jaw closes around your king pin.

Double-Pivot, Cushioned Hitch Head

The double pivoting, cushioned head improves your towing experience dramatically by helping to reduce jarring and unwanted noise. Built-in pins allow the hitch head to pivot back and forth and side to side. And hooking up is easy because the hitch head will automatically pivot to the proper angle when it comes into contact with your pin box.

Three polyurethane dampeners help to cushion the movement from the pivoting head and to reduce towing noise. Two of these dampeners are built into the head assembly to cushion the head's side-to-side pivoting. The third dampener cushions the back-and-forth motion and must be installed in the hitch prior to use. Installation of this third dampener is easy - simply press the dampener up into the pre-drilled hole underneath the hitch head.

Easy Installation

The Hijacker Autoslide hitch is specially designed to fit a Demco UMS custom underbed mounting kit (sold separately). The hitch comes pre-assembled for an easy installation. All you have to do is bolt on the side plates and attach the head to the hitch base.

The side plates have 2 functions. They contain the feet that fit into the receivers in your truck bed, and they allow you to raise or lower the hitch head to better match your pin box height. After you choose your desired height setting, simply bolt the side plates to the hitch base with the included hardware. Then lower the hitch into the 4 UMS receivers in your truck bed. Turn the handles to lock the feet into the receivers and secure the handles with the included safety pins. The hitch can be removed to give you full truck bed access. Simply remove the safety pins, turn the handles to unlock the feet, and lift the hitch out of the receivers.

Clearance Formula for Short Bed Trucks

Use the formula below to ensure there will be enough space between your truck cab and trailer when executing a 90-degree turn.

(A+B) - C = Clearance

A = Distance from the center of fifth-wheel hitch jaw to truck cab

B = Length of Travel (14")

C = Width of trailer divided by 2 (to get half)

For example: If the distance from the center of the hitch to the cab is 36", 36" + 22" = 58". If your fifth-wheel trailer is 102" wide, take half (51"), then plug in: 58" - 51" = 7" of clearance.

Note: At least 4 inches of clearance is recommended to safely execute a 90-degree turn.

Video Transcript for Demco Fifth Wheel - Sliding Fifth Wheel - DM8550022 Review

Today, we're going to review part number DM8550022. This is the Demco 18,000 lbs Hijacker Autoslide UMS Underbed Mount 5th Wheel Hitch. Now, this hijacker autoslide is an automatic sliding 5th wheel hitch. It is designed for short-bed trucks with a 6 and 1/2 floor bed to give you additional clearance between your truck's cab and the trailer during any turning maneuvers. It does eliminate the need to have to get in and out of your truck, pull a pin and manually slide the hitch back or forth. This will automatically slide by using the rack and pinion gear technology that's right here in the base of the hitch and that'll give you about up to 14 inches of 4 and half travel to help get in and out of those tight spots.

Now normally, when you hook a 5th wheel trailer up to your 5th wheel hitch, it isn't designed to turn or pivot in the jaw where the king pin's connected to the hitch head. In this case, the autoslide hitch has this integrated locking system in the head and it locks the pin box in place on the hitch head which eliminate the need for any additional locking wedges on the standard pin box. Instead, what'll happen is this whole hitch head on this will pivot with the pin box locked into place and it'll move it automatically closer to the tailgate which create much more space between your truck cabin in your trailer on short terms. Basically, what happens is with your pin box locked in here on these capture plates, I'm going to show you how these capture plates work but once it's all locked in, what'll happen is when you go to make turns, you can see that the hitch head will automatically move towards your tailgate to give you the clearance and also rotate wherever your turning and then when you're done and you're hooked up, I'm going to go back into the tow position. What'll happen is it'll just automatically go back into the tow position and you can hear it sort of relax into place and the reason what's nice about this is once you get this far, when you're get up on the highway and you're towing it, it's not going to allow it to move automatically because what happens is when you get into this position, there's a guide here that'll hold that rack and pinion gear into this position so it will not go if the trailer's directly behind your tow vehicle. It will not pull it directly back. There has to be at least about a 10 to 15 degree turn to get it to automatically move.

What happens is now this autoslide hitch is designed to work with standard trailer pin boxes between the minimum of 12 inches to up to 14 inches maximum. These capture plates I had mentioned which holds the pin box in place, these are adjusted to the width of the trailer pin box in order for the slide mechanism to work properly. Basically, what you do is with your trailer hooked up, pin box all installed, you'll notice . Let me just remove one of these and you'll notice that these capture plates right here, it will slide. You can see they move back and forth. What you want to do is you want your trailers hooked up, there's a capture plate on each side, you'll push this up against the pin box and left it up against the pin box and lift it up against the pin box then you'll tighten down both of these bolts and it'll hold that into place and then run the jam nut up.

Tighten that down. Do it on this. Do it also over here so that'll lock that pin box in place. With them in place, it will keep that pin box from rotating on the hitch head. It'll let the hitch head do the rotating. Now the thing you need to remember, if this hitch is installed and any trucks with a 5 and 1/2 foot or a 6 foot bed, there is no guarantee that you'll get a full 90 degree turn with this autoslide hitch.

This autoslide hitch was designed for use with the RV style 5th wheel trailers with the industry standard 2 inch standard king pin. This does have an 18,000 lb towing capacity. It is a lower profile design which gives you easy access for routine maintenance on the simple maintenance. One of the simple maintenance things you can do is these 2 pins right here, you can get up underneath. Just pull the snap rings out. These pins can slide out. You'll grease them, drop them back in, attach them with the snap rings. It's a very easy way to grease the head and the jaws just by pulling those pins out. This hitch is at a lighter weight for easier hitch installation and removal and the other nice feature is there's a pin and clip here that you pull. Slide this long pin out, it'll allow you to pick up the head and remove it and then makes the base slider to remove if you want to take it out when you're not towing. Now the head itself is a double pivot head. It will go front to back as you can see and it will also side to side. It does use a wrap around jaw with a locking bar infront for a soother, more safer secure ride. This autoslide hitch does come all assembled just like this one from the factory. Makes it easy for installation. The only prep work necessary is you'll bolt these side plates to the auto glide hitch in the correct hitch height position. On the plates, there's 2 rows of holes. On the hitch itself, the base, there's 2 rows of holes so you can actually get 3 vertical height adjustments to get you to the correct hitch hike you need for your application. The side plates that you're bowling on and I've already done it on this. You can see there's one on each side here. These side plates is what'll connect your hitch to your below bed rails. The below bed rails are sold separately. It'll be the below bed rails in an installation kit. We do sell those on our website. They are sold separately and what I would recommend is go to our website and use our fit guide. Put in your model vehicle and that'll show you which under bed rails you'll need for your application. When you do bolt these side plates on, these side plates, you can get 3 vertical height adjustments. The lowest adjustment would be 15 and a half inches. The middle is 16 and 3 quarters. The highest is 18 and a quarter and again, the hitch hike measurement is from the truck bed to the top of the hitch head. You want to get it so you're truck and trailer will be level. Also, you'll notice on these side plates, how they operate. You can see the tabs right here. What you'll do is you have 2 pins here. Just pull the clip off there. Pull this pin out. Pull the clip off here. Pull this pin out and then you'll notice you can just rotate these out 90 degrees. When you do that, you're tabs will rotate 90 degrees and that'll allow you to drop it into the below bed rails that you'll purchase separately for your specific vehicle. You'll do the same on this side. Drop it in, once they drop into there, you just turn them 90 degrees like that. It'll lock these tabs into your below bed rails and then just take your pins. Put your clips in just like that. When you do that it keeps from opening up. Now the other thing I wanted to mention is this outrigger bar right up here we got attached. What that's used for, its in the front of the hitch. It's designed to help carry and distribute the hitch and the trailer weight when this hitch is at full travel distance. This will help eliminate any movement of the hitch in the truck bed. The bar will be adjusted after your hitch is installed at its correct height in the truck bed. This hitch is made in the USA using American steel. I just want to show you real quickly how the jaw operates and we'll move it again. Basically, what you'll want to do to hook up, just pull your pin and clip and then you just take your handle, slide it all the way and it'll lock open. You can see the jaw's open. I have an example here. This is what the king pin would look like on your pin box. A standard 2 and half or 2 inch diameter. When you're backing up, you're king pin's going to slide right into the head. Once it does that, you'll hear this lock. The jaw wraps around the blocking bars in place and just like that once you're ready to go, just drop your pin and clip in and you're all ready. Then again the rotation part I mentioned earlier, you can see as you're turning, once you get to the 10 or 15 degrees, it'll automatically go and then when you're ready to tow, get back on the hull. You'll see that it'll go straight and out. Boom. Locks into place and again, it won't go back straight. That should do it for the review. Part number DM8550022. Nice product. Pretty much idiot proof once you get it set up. After that just hook up and go. No worries about crushing your cab when running a short bed. Built well. Heavy duty. Only complaint would be the weight manually getting it in and out. 301924

Hello, This hitch has been awesome. It works perfectly all the time. My only gripe would be that the head doesn’t fall down automatically. I have to get out of the truck to tilt it down when connecting to my trailer. Other than that, I’m very satisfied with the design and operation of the hitch. Thank You 521792

- DM8550022

I'm very happy with the product. Less so with the instructions. Wished they could have a little more explanation to them about the assemble of the hitch itself. The undermount was fairly easy and would suggest it to anyone with a 17-19 Superduty. 796234

- DM8550022

Love this hitch! Works great in 2019 F250 CC w/short bed, I can turn 90 degrees and still miss cab of truck. No problems latching and unlatching as long as everything is fairly level. I installed hitch with under bed kit by myself, wasn't too bad. I've had hitch for a year now with no problems. I would recommend Demco Hijacker Autoslide hitch. 774903

The Demco Autoslide is the only way to go for a 5th wheel hitch for a short bed truck. The extra 14" of travel is great. Left me truck almost 90 degrees. It was even easy to install by yourself with a lot help from another person. 774871

- DM8550022

The instructions provided with the hitch were very detailed and provided enough information for me to install it myself. I love having the mounting rails below the bed. the auto slide worked flawlessly. For the winter I left the hitch coupled with the trailer to keep my bed clear. 735606

So pleased with this hitch! Works great on my 2015 F250 short bed. Works well with my retractable tonneau cover, fits under perfectly on the low adjustment points. If you have a short bed this hitch is the one to have. etrailer customer service was awesome as usual! 674453

- DM8550022

Love it. I like that it comes out and you get your bed back. If I had one thing to say bad on it is that when you back up to it you have to be lined up straight with it. You can't come in on an angle. But it's not the end of the world. It's great you don't have to get out in the rain to slide it back for the sharp turns. 591643

- DM8550022

Works great, I have a bike rack on the front of camper, which clears the front of the camper. It’s a heavy slider but that’s ok 591075

- DM8550022

Awesome product. Works flawlessly! Only drawbacks are the weight, shes heavy. But that just means made well in my book. I'd recommend it any day 575823

- DM8550022

Hitch works perfectly. The auto slide is awesome! Very well built. Very heavy. Not something you want to be taking in and out of your bed all the time. My only complaint is that you have to be pretty straight when you hook or unhook the camper. 567589

- DM8550022

Overall I love the auto slider mount and it works as advertised. Easy to hook up and unhook. Just have to make sure your truck is in a straight line with the RV when unhooking because you don’t want to leave this thing turned or it can be very hard to hook back up. I learned this the hard way. Turning it by hand does not work either. The plastic inserts to cover the holes when the mount is removed don’t work because the holes are too shallow on my F250,, but that makes no difference to me because the mount is way to heavy to remove anyway. The only thing that does bother me is the rust. I have used a wire brush and rustoleum paint on several spots now. Perhaps better rust proofing would be something the company could look into for future mounts. I mounted mine in a 2017 F250 with the 6.5’ bed and added a toolbox in front of it. Had to go with the in-bed box because my rv would have hit one of the boxes that sits on top of the bed. When backing up and turning my RV (Grand Design Reflection 307MKS) misses the cab by a good 3 inches. Installation of the mount rails that go under the bed was time consuming, not much room to use a wrench under there so each bolt took a while to tighten into place. The slider is big and heavy so it was a chore getting it dropped into the holes, I got 3 big guys to help out with that part. If I had to do it again I would not have done this install myself, I would have found a shop to do it prior to buying the RV. But I already bought the RV and could not wait for a shop to get it done. 556610

The Demco 5th Wheel Rail Adapter for Chevy/GMC OEM 5th Wheel Towing Prep Package - 6-1/2' Bed - 21K # DM6194 is a confirmed fit for your truck and will allow you to use an autoslide hitch like # DM8550034. If you friend has the # DM8550022, then you would also need the Replacement Side Plates for Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches - Above Bed Mount # DM6003 to make the hitch and the adapter compatible. I also recommend the Demco 5th Wheel/Gooseneck 90-Degree Wiring...

Yes, the Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch part # DM8550022 with the Underbed Rail and Installation Kit part # DM8551010 will fit your 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 with the 6-1/2' bed and work with the MOR/ryde pin box you have on your 2018 Jayco Eagle 5th Wheel Trailer. However, in order to prevent the kingpin from rotating inside the hitch you will need to use a locking plate like part # DM6025.

  • Can Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Hitch be Used in Long Bed Truck
While sliding fifth wheel hitches aren't necessary for long bed trucks, there is no reason you cannot use your existing Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # DM8550022 in your new 2017 Ford F-450. You will not have any issues when it comes to the sliding mechanism and travel of the hitch. If your F-450 does not have the factory rail kit, you can use the Demco Underbed Rail and Installation Kit # DM8551009. This kit is custom-fit for this truck and will allow you to mount...

  • Recommended Rail Kit for Demco Hijacker Autoslide on 2011 Ram 2500 Short bed
The Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # DM8550022 that you referenced is a great option for your 2011 Dodge Ram Pickup and it is designed to mount to custom underbed rails. This particular hitch will not work with above-bed base rails. For the underbed rail kit that is confirmed to fit your Ram and that will work perfectly with this hitch, you will need the Installation Kit # DM8551005. This kit includes all the brackets and crossmembers needed for installation. The frame...

If your 2013 Ford F-250/F-350 has the 6-3/4 bed you can use the Underbed Rail and Installation Kit # DM8551000 so that you can use the 18K Demco Hijacker Autosliding 5th Wheel Hitch # DM8550022 that you referenced. The Demco Hijacker # DM8550022 weighs about 280 lbs. The head can be removed (which weighs about 62 lbs) to help make lifting the hitch a little easier though. If you have a standard Lippert 1621 pin box then no plate is needed for hooking up your trailer. The capture brackets...

  • Demco Hijacker Autoslide Underbed Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch on 2016 GMC Sierra 2500
For your 2016 GMC Sierra 2500 with a 6-1/2 foot bed the Demco Hijacker Autoslide # DM8550022 is the underbed fifth wheel hitch you'll want. It installs with the Custom Underbed Rail and Installation Kit # DM8551010. The Hijacker is an autoslide that will travel up to 14 inches. With many sliding hitches you need to get out of your truck to adjust the slider, make your turn, and then adjust it back to continue towing. With the Hijacker it will automatically slide when you're making...

  • Operation and Compatibility of Demco Autoslide 5th Wheel Hitch with Air Lift Rear Air Bag Kit
The rack-and-pinion slider mechanism in the Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # DM8550022 does work in both forward and reverse directions. Once the pin box causes the hitch head to turn past about 15-degrees the autoslide mechanism engages and slides the head unit rearward for better turning clearance. In your 2016 Ford F-250 short bed without factory rail kit you can use Demco installation kit # DM8551000 and for a wiring harness part # DM8555002 which plugs right in...

  • Automatic Sliding Fifth Wheel Hitch Recommendation for 2015 Ford F-250 Short Bed
For your 2015 Ford F-250 without the factory rail kit and a short bed we have just what you would need. Since you do have a short bed truck you are correct and you would need a slider hitch. My favorite to recommend is the Demco Hijacker part # DM8550022 which automatically slides as you make tight turns. This eliminates the hassle of having to get out and activate the slider. For a rail kit you then would want the under bed kit part # DM8551000 which will fit the hitch and then when...

  • Best Sliding Fifth Wheel Hitch Recommendation and Rail Kit for 2017 Ford F-350
The setup I would recommend is the Demco Hijacker Auto Slide part # DM8550022 with the rail kit part # DM8551009 for your 2017 Ford F-350 without the factory tow package. This is a slider hitch that will automatically slide back as you make tight turns which is a very nice feature as getting out and activating a slider mechanism can be a hassle. Especially in inclement weather. The rail kit mentioned is an underbed kit so your bed will be clean and free of large rails when you remove...

  • Are Locking Plates Needed for Demco Hijacker 5th Wheel Hitch and MORryde Pin Box
The Demco Hijacker 5th Wheel Hitch, like # DM8550022 or # DM8550034, is compatible with a MORryde pin box; the correct part is going to be Demco Hijacker Autoslide Locking Plate for MOR/ryde Pin Boxes # DM6025. The reason you need this locking plate is that it is going to stop your king pin from pivoting inside your Hijacker. The guides on your hitch you are currently talking about would not be enough to do what the locking plate does and prevent the rotation. The twisting during...

  • 2017 Ram Mega Cab Short Bed Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch and Rail Kit Recommendation
For your 2017 Ram 3500 short bed without the factory rail kit I have a great solution. The best towing setup we offer for short bed trucks is an automatic sliding fifth wheel hitch. This allows the hitch to slide back automatically as you make tight turns. For that you would want the Demco Hijacker part # DM8550022. Then for a set of underbed rails for the truck which will give you an open truck bed when not towing a fifth wheel trailer you would want the part # DM8551006.

If the Demco Hijacker 16k is the version that attaches to their underbed style rails like part # DM8550022 then the custom install kit you'd need is the part # DM8551005. If instead the rails that the hitch installs in are the standard above the bed rails then the correct rail kit is the part # DM8552016-71. Since your 2014 Ram 1500 has the super short 5-1/2 foot bed I recommend going with the 13K Demco HiJacker, # DM8550040. This hitch automatically slides up to 22-1/2 inches which you will need to be able to make 90 degree turns when towing a 5th wheel trailer. I looked up the specs on the trailers and it looks like each one has a gross weight rating just under 10,000 pounds. • Can Underbed Demco HiJacker be Installed at Lowest Height Settings on a 2018 GMC Sierra 3500
There are no notes or warnings from Demco regarding using a HiJacker in a lower setting on your 2018 GMC Sierra 3500. And it looks like there is a ton of space available based on your picture. And the gearing is higher up than the lowest part of the hitch base anyway. So while they may not have installed anything wrong it does certainly appear that they could have gone down a setting if not 2.
