Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located in your rear cargo area on the driver's side. You will have to remove the cargo area cover and interior trays to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the connector, insert the provided fuse into the in-line fuse holder.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in your rear cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Video Transcript for Hopkins Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2019 Subaru Outback Wagon

Hi there, Subaru owners. Today we're gonna be installing Hopkins Plug-in Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness, with four-pole flat trailer connector on our 2019 Subaru Outback Wagon. So, with this installed, you can feel safe when driving down the road, hauling your trailer with your family, knowing that you've got all the lighting behind you, indicating to everyone around you what your intentions are, and that you're going to be legal wherever you go.Our wiring harness is designed to live inside the vehicle. So, it will be here in your storage compartment whenever you need it. When you're ready to use it, you simply drape it out the back, and close your lift gate, making sure that you avoid the striker here in the middle. It'll pinch it between the weather stripping, holding it in place, and now it's ready for use.

It won't cause any damage to it when it pinches it between the weather stripping. This harness will provide you with all the necessary lighting, which includes your left turn signal, right turn signal, tail lamps, and brake lamps, keeping you DOT compliant in all states.Additionally, it has a module that's part of a harness that will monitor the inputs and send it to your four-pole flat trailer connector. What's nice about this, is if the module is doing that . So if there's any faults on your trailer, the module will detect it, and shut down that circuit, preventing any damage to the wiring on your vehicle. We'll begin our installation at the back of the vehicle on the inside.

You're gonna want to remove the covers that are installed in the back. You'll also want to remove the one on the driver's side, here. The tray in the center will need to be removed. And then, the foam pad on our driver's side here, will need to be removed, as well. There's two pushpins.

You can use a trim panel tool or a screwdriver to pop those out, and we can then slide this out, as well. Now, we'll need to remove the hook for your netting on the driver's side. So, if you have your netting on, you'll have to remove that. And then we can access our hook, there. We'll take a flat bladed screwdriver, and we want to pop out the center, revealing the bolt beneath. We're gonna use a 10 millimeter socket to remove that bolt, and then you can remove the entire hook.

This will be enough to gain access back here. There is wiring that's gonna be located right there. So, we're gonna reach in there and try and separate that wiring to pull it out.Inside the hole here, you'll see your wiring. There's some blue tape on it. We want to pop that wiring off and work it out. So, we'll just use a trim panel tool or a screwdriver to release the tab, here. Pry that away from the vehicle. And now we can pull our wire in here to where we can get to it. And you want to use a razor knife to cut the blue tape, and this will allow us to separate the two harnesses that are next to each other. We're gonna push that harness down towards the bottom, and pull it out with our other hand. And here we have our connector. You can see the blue tape that was holding it onto that other harness. We can now plug in our new harness into our connector, and we're just gonna route this, heading towards the back, just tucking it up underneath the side panel as we go. So, we're just tucking our wiring underneath that side piece all the way towards the back. Continue tucking it around as it curves, and we'll mount our module down here next to our spare tire. The module only comes with zip ties. And there's no wiring or anything in this area to actually zip tie it to, to keep it secure. But due to the short length of the connector, it really does need to go here, otherwise it won't be able to reach out the back to make your connection to your trailer. So, I recommend that you go out and purchase some double-sided tape, stick that to the back of your module, and then use that to adhere it next to your spare tire on the back wall, here. Now, we can reinstall all of the components we just removed. We're gonna start with the hook, and go from there. And now with everything reinstalled, we can plug in our tester and try it out. You can test it by either plugging in your trailer or a tester like the one we have here. If you need a tester, you can pick one up here at etrailer.com. Make sure that you have your left turn signal, right turn signal, tail lamps, and brake lamps. With everything working properly, we're ready to hit the road. And that completes our installation of Hopkins Plug-in Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness on our 2019 Subaru Outback Wagon.

This seems like a high quality product. It was an absolute beast to get the factory coupler out from under the panel as seen in the video or a 2018 Subaru Outback - it is apparently taped up there and if you don't have child sized hands you can expect a lot of pain finding the coupler and pulling it out. I slightly ripped the panel doing so, but it covered up nicely when reinstalling the floor trays. 515142

The Hopkins wiring harness is great, came on time and packaging was good. This went on my 2015 outback easily and works good. The only thing I did different from the instruction was after plugging into the cars wiring I ran the rest of the wire into the spare tire area and cut a slot in the rubber plug in the bottom and continued the connector along under the car to the trailer hitch then mounted the plug to the hitch with a bracket I made out of small angle iron bolted to the hitch. Then sealed the rubber plug around the wire with rubber cement and made sure all the slack in the wire underneath was gone so as not to catch on anything while driving. I did it this way because I didn't want to run the wire out the rear hatch door when connecting it to the trailer And it looks and works good. 484807

Received both the hitch and electrical connections in than two days and in excellent condition. So far car say nothing but good things about etrailer and give a high recommendation. Hopefully the hitch will go on as easily as suggested. 604248

Mine did not come with the car connector protective cap or the grease. I think if you mentioned to take out the cargo hold down (1 -10mm bolt) you can actually see the connector and it gives you more room to get your hand in there. No blind guessing as to what you are trying to pull down. 423225

Subaru

The wiring harness worked as advertised. Just reach under the rear of the left side wheel well plastic cover to find the Subaru wires taped to the metal. Plug into harness and you're good to go. Easy! 608180

Installed hitch and separate wiring harness in about 3 hours. Videos were very helpful for both, especially for wiring. I wouldn’t have been able to find the wire connection otherwise. Like some of the other reviewers i managed to keep the middle tab in the bumper and cut around it. Like the hitch so far. Thanks etrailer. 696988

This installation could not be any easier, took me less than half an hour, the video was right on and it went together perfectly. I like the fact that the plug remains in trunk when not in use and is not exposed to the weather. I would strongly recommend this product. 663402

Rather than trying to snake your hand up blindly to locate the plug (seen beginning at 2:37 of the 2017 installation video), I STRONGLY recommend removing the the cargo tie-down. Fold the rear seat down on the driver's side, and gently flip up the carpeted cover (held down with 3 push-pins). With a flat-bladed screwdriver, gently pry the plastic inner piece of the tie-down downward to expose the 10mm bolt. After removing it, and the entire tie-down assembly, you will be able to easily see the plug through the opening. This makes it much simpler to reach in from underneath to pull down the plug. The rest of the installation can proceed as normal. 647409

Subaru Forester

It took awhile to find out where to plug it in to, the Forester has a different place than the Outback. I did some online research and found a youtube instruction that got me there for where it is in the Outback. 614386

The wiring worked great. I have rather large hands, so had my wife reach up in there as instructed for my vehicle. She pulled out the connector and I finished wiring it up. Everything worked great. 593276

Installed this in my Subaru Outback. Was very straight forward, and the video on etrailer.com also made it very easy. I rate myself maybe a 7 out of 10 in handiness, so if you're the same way, you can definitely take it on. 389959

Ask the Experts about this Hopkins Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring

  • Comparing Draw-Tite, Curt, and EcoHitch Trailer Hitches for 2017 Subaru Outback
That is an excellent question, and I believe you were referring to the three trailer hitches for your 2017 Subaru Outback that have concealed cross tubes, the Curt # C13410, Draw-Tite # 76227 and EcoHitch # 306-X7266. The EcoHitch is constructed from an alloy of recycled metals, which is something people do value and is the reason some people opt to go for it. That said, the Curt and Draw-Tite are going to be more cost-effective and they also have higher capacities than the 3,500 lb...

  • Recommended Trailer Wiring Harness for 2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i
The T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118467 is the one I recommend over the other two for your 2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i. This brand of harness has less issues than the others. The Hopkins # HM11143885 and the Curt harness # C56040 are very similar as you stated and all three will work well. It is the same product made by 3 different manufacturers. I personally would get the Tekonsha based on the reputation of reliability and customer feedback.

  • Parts Needed to Tow a Trailer with 2018 Subaru Outback
According to an online owner's manual for your 2018 Subaru Outback the 2.5L can tow a trailer up to 2,700 pounds as long as the trailer has brakes. If it doesn't have brakes then the Subaru maxes out at 1,000 pounds. Additionally, there's kind of a weird statement that says "When towing a trailer on a long uphill grade continuously for over 5 miles (8 km) with an outside temperature of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C) or above", the towing capacity is 1,350 pounds. If your trailer is within...

  • Trailer Wiring Recommendation for 2015 Subaru Outback Wagon
Sounds like a short damaged the converter box of the harness you have. This happens typically when there was a pretty bad short on the trailer wiring. The boxes are designed to short themselves out when they sense a bad enough short to prevent the short from transferring to the vehicle's wiring. So what you'll want to do is find out where the short is on your trailer and fix that so that when you replace the wiring you don't also damage the new kit. The Tekonsha kit part # 118467...

  • Does Curt Trailer Hitch for 2020 Subaru Outback Wagon Work with Rear Bumper Sensors
The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # CU89FR will work perfectly on your 2020 Subaru Outback Wagon without any interference whatsoever with its rear bumper sensors; they will not be a factor either during the installation or after the hitch is installed. I have added a link to the installation instructions of this hitch for you to check out, and if you plan on doing some towing you will need Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Connector # HM11143885 to power your trailer's lights along with...

  • Troubleshooting Backup Sensors of 2017 Subaru Outback Not Functioning After Trailer Wiring Install
Based on how the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Connector # HM11143885 installs it should not have any affect on the backup sensors. Most likely what happened is the harness of the sensors got disturbed when you installed this kit. I'd recommend going over the install and seeing if you can find where the sensor might have gotten unplugged or damaged.

  • Does Trailer Wiring Harness for 2019 Subaru Outback Need to be Stored in Hatch
Each of the trailer wiring harnesses that fit your 2019 Subaru Outback will be stored inside the rear hatch compartment. It can be completely out of the way though, as you can lift up the panel in the rear hatch where the connector is and simply store the connector there. Harnesses are specifically designed this way for many vehicles that aren't considered "full-time" towing vehicles as a way to help protect it from damage. If you want to have the harness stored outside your Subaru you'll...
