Hopkins Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - HM11143865

  • Custom Fit
  • Trailer Hitch Wiring
  • Hopkins
  • 4 Flat
  • Converter

Quickly and easily install a 4-way trailer connector on your vehicle with this custom harness. T-connector plugs directly into existing wiring - no cutting or splicing required.

Features:

  • Provides a 4-way flat trailer connector at the back of your vehicle to power your trailer's signal lights
    • Compatible with 5-pole, 6-pole and 7-pole adapters (sold separately)
  • Connects quickly and easily - no cutting or splicing
    • Locate connection point in rear cargo area
    • Plug in connector
  • Includes a tail light converter to ensure that your vehicle's wiring matches that of your trailer
  • Protective connection terminals resist corrosion
  • Comes with dust cap for 4-way flat connector, cable ties, and terminal grease packet for electrical connections
  • 90-Day limited warranty

Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located in your rear cargo area, either behind the driver's-side trim panel or in the spare tire compartment.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed beneath your vehicle, near the trailer hitch. A mounting bracket (sold separately) is recommended to keep the connector secure.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Tail Light Converter

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Video Transcript for Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness Installation - 2019 Subaru Crosstrek

Today in our 2019 Subaru Crosstrek, we're going to be installing Hopkins plug-in simple vehicle wiring harness. This four-pole wiring harness is going to provide you with all the necessary lighting you need to haul your trailer. It'll give you your left turn signal, right turn signal, tail lamps and brake lamps, keeping you DOT compliant in all states. The module is pre-installed onto your harness, will protect your vehicle's circuits by shutting down any of your trailer's circuits that may have a short on them, preventing any damage to the vehicle. Located on our four-pole connector here, we have a dust cap to keep out any dirt and debris, ensuring long-lasting operation of our harness. We'll begin our installation at the back of the vehicle. You'll need to access your rear compartment, so we're going to flip this up.

We're going to go ahead and flip it up again because we're going to need to remove the spare tire. So we'll pull our tray out, unthread our spare tire, and we can pull this out. And we actually don't need to take it all the way out when we take it out. We just need access to one of the grommets underneath of it. So you can set it off to one side like this.

We'll be replacing the grommet located here on the left with the one that comes with our harness. So we can go ahead and pull that out and set it aside. And that's going to be the same, regardless of the year, make, or model you'll be installing this on.Next, we'll need to gain access to our factory tow-plug connector. On our Crosstrek, it's going to be located underneath this panel here on the driver's side. So we'll use a flat-bladed screwdriver to pop out the tabs that hold this in.

There's one on each side. And now you can just pull up on your back threshold here. I do like to lift up a little bit on the foam piece, because it doesn't lift . It kind of hangs over it, so to prevent you from accidentally breaking it, just kind of get a little bit of relief. See if you can get around that and do the same on the other side.

We'll set this aside. Our factory tow-plug connector is located here. Once you've located your factory connector, we can take our new harness and plug it into that factory connector. Simply line up your release tab with the release tab on the other one. They click together. Now you can zip-tie up your wiring to clean it up, and the module can be mounted. Now, the kit comes with zip-ties to mount your module. However, due to the length of your four-pole connector wiring, which needs to go down through this hole and then routed towards the back, you're going to have to keep this grommet pretty close to the module and keep it over in this area. So I recommend using some double-sided tape and sticking it to this paneling over here to ensure that your four-pole connector's long enough to be usable. So we're going to go ahead and route this down now before we secure it, so we can make sure that we have the appropriate length and we can set our spare tire back in before we finalize the mount. This grommet will just simply push in place and seal just like the factory one did. We pulled our four-pole connector towards the rear, make sure we've got enough. This is a pretty good length right here to ensure that we can connect it to our trailer. We can go ahead and install our dust cap on it now. This simply just slides around the connector into the slot located here. And I like to use the dust cap to secure it to the hitch, keep it up out of the way when going down the road. Alternatively, if you have a mounting bracket like our DrawTight here, you could put a four-pole bracket onto it and just install your four-pole bracket onto that bracket. So as you can see here, we put our spare tire back in place and we actually had to mount it closer to the rear of the vehicle due to not having clearance between the side wall there. In addition to the double-sided tape we used, you could run a self-tapper screw through the mounting holes at the top and bottom of the module. We can now reinstall our paneling in the reverse order that we took it off and then we're ready to test it out. So now you can plug it into your trailer to test. We've got a tester plugged in here. If you want to use a tester like this, you can pick one up at etrailer.com. You want to make sure you have your left turn signal, right turn signal, tail lamps, and brake lamps. And with everything working properly, we're ready to hit the road. And that completes our installation of Hopkins Plug-in Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness on our 2019 Subaru Crosstrek.

I am only giving this 4 stars because of two issues. We are prepared for these issues when doing installs someone doing their first one may struggle with. The wiring connector plug in on the car did not require near as much interior removal as stated in the instructions ( It can be found without any thing other than the foam spare tire block pulled, and The hole in the body is actuall quite a bit smaller than the rubber seal provided where it exits the body and the hole in the body is to small to fit the four wire connector end to fit through without some modifications. This is not a big deal the harness was the perfect length and is a plug and play harness for the Subaru Crosstrek I would not hesitate to order this part again. 376812

2011 Subaru Forester

I have a 2011 Subaru Forester. I asked that trailer rental place to install a hitch and trailer wiring. Took them about 3 hours to complete. I finally got around to attaching the trailer to the Forester only to find out that the way they wired it was wrong. I went online - came across this page and searched to see if there was a trailer wiring harness specific to my vehicle and if there was - how easy was it. etrailer's How-to video was dead on in helping me to find the factory trailer wiring hook up (didn’t have to pull the left rear inside panel away as the plug was laying just underneath the foam tire changing tools tray). I had the new harness I got in from etrailer today installed in about 10-15 minutes (maybe less). I plugged in my 4 Pin Flat -> 7 Pin Flat converter that I made myself, plugged in my trailer and my trailer lights came to life. I ripped the trailer rental place's trailer wiring out (seeing that they spliced directly into the tail light assembly) and tossed it. 476492

Worked as advertised. Loved the ease of installation. On line videos much better than written instructions with package. Wish it came with a better mount on the trailer connection (just loops the cover through the safety chain loops), but that is only a cosmetic and subjective issue. I can always buy a separate mount if I want. 543708

I used this wire harness along with the knockout plug adaptor part number 47605 on my 2017 crosstrek. It is very easy to use both on my crosstrek to make a clean look. 473696

Friends: When I installed the trailer hitch I did not cut a section out of the heat shield above the muffler. Instead I drilled 5/8” holes where the bolts go through. The shield is already prepunched where it is to be drilled. I used butyl tape around the bolts to seal them and hold the bolts. For the wiring harness, I simply used Velcro to hold the unit to the inside of the spare tire well rather than tape. 492959

The DYI videos provided by etrailer.com helped me to decide on doing this project myself. While the hitch for my 2011 Subaru Forester looked easy enough to install, the thought of how to wire it correctly seemed a challenge. That is, until I watched the video for my EXACT vehicle! It was literally as easy as watching the video on my phone while I did the install myself. Everything was EXACTLY the way the video described. I was able to complete the install in less than 15 minutes from start to finish. Thanks etrailer.com for the assist! 419848

This was the easiest hookup ever. Subaru plug pulled relatively easy. Make sure you mount the electrical interface box low enough in the wheel well that it doesn't impede proper placement of the foam insert storage tray. I didn't really need this now but likely will in the future. Costs a little more but install and through wheel well to hitch frame makes it the perfect choice and fit for my 2014 Subaru Outback. 430288

The Hopkins wiring pkg. for my Subaru had no replaceable fuse in the trailer wiring ; the others I’ve seen have the in line fuse and the other have a redundant ground wire that the installer has to fasten to the vehicle with a self taping screw. Hope I didn’t make a mistake buying this Hopkins product; the other Hopkins wiring and brake units work just fine. Keeping my fingers crossed. 664698

2016 Subaru Forester

A well-thought out piece of equipment by Hopkins, and definitely worth the extra money. This was my first harness ever installed. Installed on my 2016 Subaru Forester 2.5i. I watched the video twice, and had no trouble whatsoever. The only thing you will want to measure out is the amount of cable you want in the trunk or under the car. Merely personal preference. I will most likely put some extra cable sleeve around the wires under the car up to the connector for just a little added weatherproof protection. I used the Hopkins Fold-Over Mounting for 4-way Flat Trailer Connector - #HM48595. I installed the harness today, as I write this review; so longevity will be TBD. 661192

This is a great product and made the wiring job super simple. The video was excellent, and in particular it explained how to get the various fasteners off to access the needed spaces. One thing to note though, when we did the installation, the video on eTrailer's site showed a 2018 Forester, and my installation was done on my wife's 2019 Forester. The wiring location is actually different between the two. So we ended up removing a couple of panels that turned out to be unnecessary. Since our install though, the etrailer video has been updated with the new 2019 wiring location, which makes the install even easier. Even with the extra panel removal it was a simple job and I recommend this product. 657499

The Hopkins Wiring Harness was delivered promptly and the installation went well. I installed the wiring harness as shown on your installation video but got concerned about routing the wires over the muffler heat shield. I rerouted the wires through the passenger side of the rear lower hatch area. The Subaru Crosstrek has a hole with a plastic plug in this location but the hole had to be enlarged with a round file to fit the rubber plug on the wiring harness. The wire rerouting is much better away from the hot muffler area, excellent product. 517274

Do you have a question about this Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring?

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2019 Subaru Forester
  • We do have a hitch for your 2019 Subaru Forester, part # 76271 from Draw-Tite. The hitch is rated to tow up to 3,500 pounds but from my research your Forester is rated up to 1,500 pounds as long as the trailer has brakes. If it doesn't have brakes then you're limited to 1,000 pounds. Always make sure you stay within the limitations of the vehicle. To tow a trailer you also need a wiring harness. I recommend the Hopkins, part # HM11143865, because it's the easiest to insall and has...

  • Trailer Hitches for 2018 Subaru Forester
  • There are quite a few and it can be rather confusing. For starters I recommend getting a Class III trailer hitch on your 2018 Subaru Forester. A Class III hitch has a higher weight capacity and is the larger 2 inch receiver. There are more accessory options, like bike racks and cargo carriers, that fit the 2 inch as opposed to the smaller 1-1/4 inch size. Of the Class III hitches for you there are basically two designs; a visible cross tube with the reciever coming directly from...

  • Comparing Curt, T-One, and Hopkins Trailer Wiring Kits for 2018 Subaru Forester
  • We have three trailer wiring options for your 2018 Subaru Forester. We have the Curt option # C56040, the T-One option (my favorite) # 118467, and the Hopkins # HM11143865. The reason I favor and recommend the T-One kit part # 118467 is because the converter boxes on the T-One kits have been proven to us as being the most reliable. Trailer wiring shorts will easily damage the converter boxes of these kits which renders them totally inoperable but we have found that the T-One converter...

To install the 7-way trailer wiring harness on your Subaru you will need to convert the prior 4-way into a 7-way. To do this you will want the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer...

  • Best Looking Trailer Hitch for a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek
  • The best looking trailer hitch that fits your 2018 Subaru Crosstrek is the EcoHitch, part # 306-X7365. The cross tube is concealed behind the rear bumper and the receiver tube is visible underneath. Additionally, the receiver tube can be removed when you're not using it so nothing is visible at all. With that being said this might be a little fancier than what you're looking for. And by "fancier" I mean expensive. The next best looking option is the Curt, part # C13382. It still...

  • Recommended Suspension for 5x8 Northern Tool Trailer
  • The best suspension to add is going to be an axle-less system from Timbren. These are universal fits and I highly recommend checking out the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System w Electric Brake Hubs # A35RS545E. This will give you a full suspension with electric brakes. In terms of a brake controller for your 2012 Subaru Outback you first need the appropriate wiring: 4-way # HM11143865 and Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7, which will give you a...

  • Installing 4-Way Trailer Wiring Harness In 2013 WRX Hatchback
  • The vehicle body harness you need to plug into is located under the left (driver's side) sidewall. If you can't get easy access to it, I recommend removing the panel to gain easy access and then reinstalling the panel once connected. The connector may not be as loose as you expect, but it is there. I've attached the installation details for you. Unfortunately I don't have a video of the installation to attach for you.

  • 2013 Subaru WRX Impreza Trailer Wiring Harness Recommendation
  • Since your 2013 Impreza is a WRX wagon the trailer wiring you would need is a hardwire kit and not the custom install kit part # HM11143865 that you referenced. The # 119250KIT is the way to go. Instead of hardwiring to taillight circuits it uses sensors that clamp around them instead so you don't have to make any permanent modifications.
