Installation

To determine where to splice into your vehicle's tail light wiring, you will need to consult the included instructions. Use the quick-splice connectors to attach the input wires of the tail light converter to the corresponding wires from your vehicle. Once you've spliced in the converter, connect the included hot lead to the black wire and run it up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Then locate a flat surface inside your vehicle near the tail lights and adhere the black converter box using the provided double-sided tape. Find a raw metal surface to use as a ground point and secure the white ground wire using the provided ring terminal and screw. Finally, secure the converter wires to your vehicle using the included cable ties.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on the 4-pole connector to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

Because most trailers run on a 2-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on 1 wire - the signals from your vehicle may have to be converted to be compatible with your trailer's wiring. If your vehicle operates on a 3-wire system, which means that it has separate brake and turn signals, then those signals will need to be combined so that they run on 1 wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. This converter will also ensure that your trailer's lights illuminate fully, even if your vehicle has pulse-width modulation (PWM) wiring. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

2017 Infiniti QX50

This was delivered within same box as a trailer hitch that I ordered for my 2017 QX50. Wir8ng package was open/damaged, however item looked clean and new. I installed it a couple days ago following instructions video since it was not a plug&play application. The installation took about 30 minutes. The unit works flawlessly. I towed my small trailer using the wiring and I had no issue what so ever. Iam happy with the purchase.

That's great to hear, Burak! I'm impressed with your install time. Do you work with cars a lot?

by:
2002 Pontiac Bonneville

The installation went well. The slowest part was figuring out the tail light wiring and labeling them. I had to run the black power feed wire to the battery which is under the back seat. I thought that was going to be the most difficult part of the job, but it turned out to be the easiest.I mounted the module on the inside of the left rear quarter panel near the tail light. Made my connections as per the instructions, and finally inserted the fuse. The lights worked correctly. I then reinstalled the trunk lining and mat and everything was hidden. This was a 2002 Pontiac Bonneville .

2021 Polestar 2

Awesome installation instructions, this made the job much less frustrating and I didn't actually pull my hair out LOL. The service staff and advice folks are the greatest in the world thank you so much!

by:

The instructions are basically confusing. Takes more time to try to interpret them than to do the install. We replaced the barrel connectors with Wirefy that have shrink on them for waterproofing and used 12 ga. GXL automotive wire from the battery to the back of the car. This is critical since it is hot to the battery and if abraded can short. Even with a fuse, up to 20 amps of power will short before the fuse blows, enough to cause a fire! The box mounted right on the left taillight assembly. Use spiral wrap to protect the trailer plug wire that passed under the spare tire and out an existing hole in the floor pan. Used an LED to confirm the wires and it all works. Had an issue with the ground, as the existing screw for the taillight assembly was NOT grounded, to my surprise. We sanded the paint around it and that worked. Overall, not a bad setup.

Still works great, one year later.

This was a real disappointment and I returned this wiring package. I understand the economics of stocking products, but having this as the recommended wiring solution really eroded my trust in etrailer.com. My vehicle--2020 Palisade--has a plug ready to go for a trailer wiring harness. Since I had grown to trust etrailer, I bought the wiring solution they recommended. It would have been a huge hassle to install that recommended solution. That motivated me to look for other vendors' offerings. I found a harness that simply plugged into my vehicles provided plug, had a converter, and provided the four-flat output plug that I wanted, for half the price. I guess I'll have to look twice before simply taking etrailer's recommendation from now on. I still gave them two stars because their return process was very easy and straightforward. I'm just out the shipping cost they deduct from the return. My bad.

by:

Easy job, 30 minutes to install, low p rofile

by:

This works well - the wiring easy if you know which wires to use and where they are located. On an 2020 Audi Q7 - do not use the wiring harness that goes to the back bumper. These lights are programmed to turn off when the hatch is closed. Instead - locate the harness going to the lights on the hatch. The 2020 Audi Q7 is a 2 wire system. The White wire with the Gray stripe (White/Gray) are the running lights. The Dark Blue wire with the Black stripe (Blue/Black) is the Left turn signal. The Back wire with the Dark Blue stripe (Black/Blue) is the right Turn signal. Use a fuse tap (also on amazon) to tap power for the converter. No need to run a wire to the battery. The fuse box is in the left side area of luggage compartment, right where you need it and you can mount the converter in that area as well.

Hey John, this kit is a universal option, so it will need to be spliced in. That said, we do offer custom-fit harnesses as well, just let me know the year, make, and model of your vehicle, and I’ll be happy to find the right one for you!

by:

The overall product was fine for the most part. Except for the connector that goes to my vehicle, didn't have one. I had to splice it into the car wiring. I wasn't expecting this

by:

If I had to do it again I definitely would order the plug together model for more $ than to splice this into the wiring on my new car. I put a liberal amount of dielectric grease and tape to cover splices and I haven’t had any trouble, works fine so far.

by:

Installation was straight forward. I'd give this item a 5 star if it came with plug and play connectors instead of using wire taps.

by:
2008 Mercury Grand Marquis

Everything is included in the package to make it a universal fit. Routing of the black power wire was the hardest part for me, because my vehicle sets lower than a truck or SUV. After careful consideration, I figured out the best route to take in running it safely. Instructions were very helpful in the installation of this product. Highly recommend it if you want a very dependable setup.

by:
Mitsubishi RVR

This was the only harness that fit my Mitsubishi RVR 2024 it was straight forward and easy for anyone with a basic knowledge of car wiring to install. I installed this in my gerage. It works great and all connections were included.

by:

Install video didn’t used connectors provided in kit. Either align video with connectors provided or update the video. Also, install video said I needed to use a rubber grommet to run wire from underside into trunk. No video of where grommet was located. Install was much more involved than video indicated. Also, the written instructions are trash! Converter does work as described after a fairly involved/intense install. If you are not comfortable fishing wires (with fish tape) through tight, blind spaces, and have the correct tools and materials to weather proof connections, have a shop do the work.

by:
2021 BMW X3

Overall the product, installation kit and provided videos were excellent. I was able to install the product and have it working successfully in about 90 minutes. The only issue was that I needed 2 ring connectors and the kit only came with one...extra trip to the hardware store. Otherwise, very satisfied and will see how this performs long term.

by:

The Curt Powered Tail Light converter worked awesomely over the past year, definitely worth it! Get a car electrition to instal though to get it right!

by:
1993 Toyota Camry

Do not attempt to to DYI this converter install unless you are very, very experienced!!
Me, a retired Master Auto/Tech-Electrician took 3-4 hours to do a safe installation. My 2003 Camry's rear wiring is too small to safely carry the amperage that would be needed for a CURT all-plug-in kit.
The long term safe part of the install is fishing routing the black power wire all of the way inside past the C, then B , then A pillars and tie up looping over the steering column and brake pedal assembly. The easy way under-chassis routing along steel brake lines is not long term safe. Dependent then on many many (more than supplied) ny-wraps to keep from hanging down sagging road debris snagged.

by:
2009 Toyota Sienna

It solved the problem of insufficient amperage to light the pop-up. However, the Curt plug and play unit was insufficient in this area for the 2009 Toyota Sienna and a warning should have been made recommending the powered unit only.

by:

Your installation video was great. I don't think I could have found the correct wires without it. The Curt instructions were not clear in determining which wiring scheme the Pacific has. I still don't know what PS stands for in their chart, but your video explained it nicely.

After one year the module is working great. No problem what so ever.

by:

Works great! Install was fairly easy just following the video. Only issue I had was the 4 pole tester I bought was faulty so check your tester FIRST if something doesn’t appear to be working. After I was all finished I checked and it said nothing on the right side was working. I had followed the directions to the letter so I decided to test the tester on a neighbor’s car that regularly pulls a trailer and sure enough it didn’t work there either. Got a new tester from Amazon the next day and everything looks perfect! (And btw, the tester did NOT come from etrailer!)

by:
2013 Buick Enclave

The install on my 2013 Buick Enclave was difficult, but not because of the Converter or the instructions but because of the car itself, especially trying to get the 12vdc power wire into the engine compartment. Actually, I ended up drilling a hole into the battery compartment, located behind the passenger seat and saved myself a lot of headache (be sure to make it water tight). The Converter itself works great and the instructions were adequate. The etrailer.com videos helped too! The only issue I had with the converter was that the wires going to the driver-side rear light were too short (IMO) because this caused the converter box to be pulled up into the an area I couldn't get to to secure it. I extended the wires on that side and I was able to mount the converter in a more convenient location.

by:

Good product. Great installation. Fair price and no problems. Thanks etrailer

by:
2023 Kia Sportage

Good experience, shipping was quick and arrived on time.
Be aware the instructions are only for the product it doesn’t provide instructions for make and model of your vehicle

by:

Awesome! Without a doubt, your video made my project possible. Thank you for the time and effort to support regular folk like me upgrade their car without the expense of hiring a professional. I’m so proud of myself and owe a lot of credit to etrailer!

Yeah, it is definitely a bit to sort through, so I think we can help you out with the right 4-way wiring harness for your 2024 Kia Telluride.
