Weld-on surge brake actuator with adjustable drop channel lets you mount a coupler attachment (sold separately) in 1 of 5 positions to fit your application. Efficient roller design reduces resistance.

Note: Because this actuator does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free-backing brakes so that you can drive in reverse without the actuator triggering your trailer's brakes.
When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward, once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. When this happens, the actuator contracts, applying force to its master cylinder. This in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.
This actuator is great for tall trailers. This is because the adjustable channel is positioned so that the mounted coupler can sit below the actuator tube, allowing for a greater drop than with a standard center-mounted channel. As a result, you can line up your tall trailer with your tow vehicle's hitch for a level setup.

Hello, everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a look at this Dexter 12 inch adjustable channel down hydraulic drum brake actuator. Has a 12,500 pound gross towing weight capacity, and you can see as it has a nice prime finish to it. Now, you'll use this actuator to synchronize your trailer brakes with your tow vehicle brakes. Basically, this hydraulic actuator will activate your trailer brakes when your tow vehicle slows or stops.
What happens is when you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs, and the momentum pushes the trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. So with the surge brake system, this actuator is then triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows. The inner slide portion of your actuator will telescope back into the outer portion and it applies force to the master cylinder in the back right here, which in turn'll supply the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer's brakes. This one here is an adjustable channel design. You can see it has five different mounting positions for your coupler.
Now, the coupler's not included. We do sell that separately on our website, and it is an adjustable design so you put your coupler right in the inside here and then put it in the correct height through your application. The measurement on the adjustable channel coupler is 12 inches tall, and the channel width, which will be measured the inside of the channel, is three inches. Now, this is a sturdy, durable steel construction, resists bending in any jack knife situations. It is a unique roller design.
The roller right up here, this will reduce resistance during the telescoping to create a nice straight line movement. If you notice on the roller, it has a grease zerk fitting. It makes it easy for lubrication of the roller. The paint, the finish on this is a gray prime finish, provides corrosion resistance. And up here, if you notice, let me just unhook it.
It has this breakaway chain, and this is required by law. It is included. And basically what this does, it prevents a trailer runaway situation. So what you'll do is take this hook on this end and run this all the way up to your tow vehicle and hook it to your tow vehicle. And then what'll happen if by chance your trailer gets disconnected from your tow vehicle, it's gonna pull out on this chain here, which is gonna activate this lever forward, which will then activate the master cylinder to apply the brakes in the runaway situation. But again, this chain is included. (chain clanks) Wrap it back around here. Now, this is a weld on installation. It is designed to fit three inch wide straight tongue trailers. Application if it's trailers with hydraulic drum brakes. Gross towing weight capacity on this is 12,500 pounds, tongue weight of 1,250 pounds. Now, one note I do wanna mention, because this model does not have an electric reverse lockout on the back here, it is recommended that you can equip the trailer with either an electric reverse lockout solenoid that we do sell separately that would screw on the back here or you can have free use, free backing brakes on your trailer so that you can drive in reverse without triggering your trailer's brakes. But that's gonna do it for the look at the Dexter 12 inch adjustable channel down hydraulic drum brake actuator with the 12,500 pound gross towing weight capacity.
