Video Transcript for Blue Ox Base Plate Kit Installation - 2018 Ford F-150

Speaker 1: Today on our 2018 Ford F150, we're gonna be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Blue Ox baseplate kit with removal arms, part number BX2671. This baseplate is gonna allow us to tow our Ford safely down the road behind our RV while we're traveling. It's gonna spread towing force between two brackets, minimizing the weight placed on the suspension. This is gonna be one of five main components in a flat two setup. Along with this, there's wiring, the braking system, safety cables, and your tow bar. This is what our baseplate looks like when it's installed.

It's gonna be custom fit baseplate. As you can see, it's not gonna stick out past the edge of the bumper fascia. So you're gonna maintain that nice, clean look for your Ford. This baseplate is adaptable with a lot of different tow bars, which include the Road Master tow bar with the Road Master tow bar adapter, part number RM-031 or RM-031-5, which are sold separately. This is gonna be constructed of a durable steel with a black powder coat finish to help resist any corrosion. The distance between our two brackets, center to center, is 35".

This is gonna have safety cable hookups, which is this plate here with this large hole and it's also gonna come with removable arms. To install them, you simply push them into place, turn them until they lock in. To remove them, you pull the spring loaded pen and then twist out. Your kit is gonna come with two caps. When your arms are removed or not being used, the caps gonna fit right inside of the base plate.

It's gonna help keep any grime or anything from getting inside the hole and causing an issue later on. Now that we've gone over some of the features, let's show you how to get it installed. To start off our installation, we're gonna have to nuts on the other side of our bumper that we need to remove and they're gonna around the outside of the frame. We'll be using a 21 millimeter socket and we're gonna remove this nut on both sides of the vehicle. Next thing we want to do is we're gonna remove this cap and this cap on the center of our bumper. We're just gonna reach back and we're gonna pry out and pop it out of place.

We want to make sure that these metal clips, we pull these back out and put them back on the cover itself. Just push them into place and if you just push on these two tabs, you'll be able to slide it right out. You want to gain access to these two nuts right here. Now we're gonna repeat the same process on the passenger side. Now with our 21 millimeter socket, we'll remove the two nuts inside the bumper. I'm gonna leave my nuts loosely installed on there until I get an extra set of hands to help me pull the bumper off. One thing to keep in mind, when you pull our bumper off, if you have fog lights, you're have those hooked up. You might want to see if you might have a some push pin fasteners up in here that are a little hard to get to while it's on that you might have to remove. There. You can see there. No push pin fasteners. We'll just set this aside to be reinstalled later on.Next, we're gonna slide this little plastic and rubber cover off. We're just gonna pull down, slide it out over our tow hooks. We will not be reinstalling those. Next, we'll take a 15 millimeter socket and remove our tow hooks. We're gonna repeat that same process on the other side. Once we get our tow hooks removed, you're gonna have a plate like this inside with two welded on nuts. We want to make sure we keep that because we're gonna be putting our new hardware into those nuts. Now if you have two hooks on your vehicle like this one, you're gonna use the existing hardware that you removed. If your vehicle does not have the tow hooks, you're gonna use a hardware that comes in a kit. We're gonna take a little bit of Loctite, put it on the thread of our bolts and we're gonna take one side and you want to make sure that this bracket that has this edge on it is going up to the outside of the frame. So this is gonna be our driver's side. We'll install one of our bolts that's gonna be removed.Once we get one end, hold our baseplate in place. We're gonna reinstall our other one. We'll tighten it down. You want to make sure before you tighten it and torque with that this plate is against the frame and we'll torque to the specifications in the instructions. You're gonna do the same thing to the inaudible 00:05:29. Next, we're gonna use our baseplate as a template. Now we're gonna drill two holes in the side of our frame. First, we're gonna use a hole punch and mark the center of each hole or as close as we can get. Then we're gonna take a small drill bit and drill a pilot hole. Then you're gonna repeat that process for the three remaining holes. Next, we're gonna open up our holes to the size specified in the instructions. I'm gonna use a step bit. You can use a step bit or a 1764 drill bit is what they're calling for this hole to be.So what I did on my step bit is I just marked it and what I'm gonna do is because this doesn't have a 1764 spot on it, I'm gonna go up to 1/2" and then open it up as I need to to get my bolt to fit. Now we'll test fit one of our bolts. So we got plenty of room. Then we'll do that same process for the remaining three holes. So the next hole we're gonna do is take some paint or clear coat, whatever it is you have and you want to spray the inside of that bare metal and cover that bare metal up to kind of help resist any corrosion later on down the road. So we'll just spray it and let that dry for a minute. We can put in our hardware. Next, we'll take our 1/2" bolt that comes in our kit with a lock washer. Again, we're gonna make sure we use Loctite, red Loctite, use it into one of our holes and then we're gonna take our nut plate on the inside and attach it to our bolt. We're gonna do the same thing with the front hole, same combination. Then we'll tighten them down with a 3/4" socket. Once we tighten them down, we'll torque them down to the specifications in the instructions. Now we're gonna take some tin snips and we're gonna cut off our wires here, the wires that are going to our nuts on the inside of the frame. Once you've got that process done, you're gonna repeat the same thing on the other side of the vehicle. Next, we're gonna install our safety cable. We're gonna start with our clamp here. We're gonna put it in this small hole down on the bottom of our baseplate that we installed. Then we're gonna take one end of our cable. We're gonna come up. You see this body mount here, we're gonna come up on the inside of the frame. We're gonna go behind it just lik this. Tighten it down and we'll take our 3/4" wrench. Go ahead and tighten it. Turn it on there a couple of time until it's tight and you're gonna repeat that same thing on the other side of the vehicle. Now with an extra set of hands, we'll put our bumper back into place. Remember, you'll have a bolt plate back here. Make sure that's inserted. You can install one of your nuts on each side to hold your bumper in place so you can install the remaining hardware. Next we're gonna take our bumper. You're gonna push it up. We're gonna go ahead and get one tightened down to make sure it stays flush with the bottom the fascia and you want to do that same thing on the other side of the vehicle just to make sure that you're straight before you tighten down the remaining hardware. Once you get that done, you can tighten down your remaining hardware. Next, we'll reinstall the two nuts on the inside of our bumper. We'll go back through and torque all of our hardware to the specifications in the instructions. Next, we'll reinstall our caps and you're ready to hit the road. Speaker 2: To complete this flat tow setup, we used a baseplate, part number BX2671, Road Master wiring, part number RM-15267. If you have an RV with air brakes, you'll want to use SMI Airforce One, part number SM99243 and if your RV does not have air brakes, SMI Stay In Plate Duo, part number SM99251. You're also gonna need a tow bar. We used a Blue Ox avail tow bar, part number BX7420, which comes with safety cables. If your tow bar doesn't have safety cables, you're gonna want some to safely tow your vehicle. You can find some here at etrailer.com. Speaker 1: And that'll do it for the look at and installation on the Blue Ox baseplate kit with removal arms, part number BX2671 on our 2018 Ford F150.

Very happy with etrailer for the purchase of a Blue Ox tow bar with needed hook ups for lights, etc and an Air Force One Brake system for my 2018 F150. Crystal did a great job of comparing options and matching pricing from across the web. She offered free installation. The Installer, Shane was awesome, I wanted all hookups hidden by the front plate on the F150 when not towing, Shane came through and then some. Finally, the manager Robert was excellent on follow-up as we had some air leak once we got home. etrailer stood behind everything and follow was exceptional. Very pleased! 553937

This Ox baseplate for my 2012 Ford F150 was received promptly and installation was very easy per the included instructions. I also installed the taillight wiring kit, but I was not at all happy with that. I would recommend a diode kit. Having to drill the 1" hole generated a lot of plastic pieces which were difficult to remove from the taillight housing. The bulb holders are not sealed, so I assume I will get crud in the taillight housing. 59404

Review from a similar Blue Ox Standard in Base Plates

The base plate was fairly easy to install on our 2013 Honda C-RV. The videos on etrailer are very helpful, giving us the confidence to do the job in our own garage. The only problem with installation was that the holes didn't quite line up after removing the bumper. I think that was noted in the instructions. The removable arms work well and we have had no issues. We have been using this product towing our car behind our motor home for over 15K miles in the last year without incident. I recommend this product. 352325

I've bought at least one other product from etrailer in addition to the base plate for my 2008 Jeep Liberty. Great company. 486224

Blue ox base plate is still great just a note for users you may need to lube the inside of the holes where the aluminum adapters for the tow bar connection is as one time I could not turn it to lock in for towing this solved the problem

Great product. Well designed and easy to install. Only difficulties during the installation are those plastic fasteners on vehicle-- suggest buying about six to have on hand for re-installation, as no matter how careful you are ...plastic is plastic, if you know what I mean. Very informative installation video that will assist anyone thinking of buying or installing this unit. If you're handy with tools, go for it! Note: I took the text from the video and created a simple instruction "list" for buddy and I to follow along, to be ensure we didn't miss any steps as pictures on actual instructions were not too useful. Also, the baseplate comes with a nice step bracket for easy break-away switch mounting, which was a plus. 225837

My third Blue Ox Base Plate. Fit and function are perfect. Fits my existing (first) tow bar and the tab height is nearly exactly the same as my 12 year older Jeep so didn't even need to make any draw bar changes. 111481

Review from a similar Blue Ox Standard in Base Plates

Great base plate - -super service from etrailer. Couple of hints, at least for install on a 2012 Wrangler Unlimited: 1) the phillips push pins that hold the belly pan on come out best with a light touch on the driver. I buggered up 2 figuring that out. 2) the plate seems to be too narrow to fit, but with a rubber mallet and some persuasion, it will. 3) Use a corded drill for the holes into the frame. My 19.2 volt didn't have the grunt to get it done even with swapping out batteries repeatedly. 4) Directions don' t say anything about how to level the plate after the first (lower) bolt is in, but probably best to have it level or even slightly angled down or away from the grill (gives better clearance for the electric connection below the license plate frame). Wish the electrical connection had black spring return for the cover and the screws to mount it were black. Also wish Blue Ox didn't put a white part number label and the orange warning label on the FRONT, visible section of the plate. Why not the back? I installed it myself. Took half a day and 2 scraped knuckles, but not to tough of a job with the right tools. My third or fourth purchase from etrailer and all have been quick, reasonably priced, marked by good communication and respectful. Works for me! Thanks etrailer! 41767

Each of these is detailed in the linked articles on flat towing. The Roadmaster base plates you referenced, part # RM-524431-5, are a confirmed fit as long as you do not have the Raptor version, but a better choice is the Blue Ox kit # BX2671 which features twist-lock draw bars. • Blue Ox Base Plate Kit that Fits 2018 Ford F150 Raptor for Flat Towing
  • The Blue Ox Base plate kit part # BX2671 is a confirmed fit for your 2018 Ford F-150 Raptor. You'll also need a tow bar to flat tow and for that I recommend the Blue Ox part # BX7365 which is a great option as it has telescoping arms that make it easy to connect/disconnect and because it comes with safety cables. For lighting you can use the diode kit, # RM-15267, and not have to worry about cutting into the taillight housing. This will splice into your taillight wiring to allow your...

For that you'd want the Blue Ox kit part # BX2671 which is a confirmed fit and is the easiest to use and install kit we have. I attached an install video and picture for this kit on a 2018 F-150 just like yours. Next you'll want a tow bar to attach from the motorhome to the base plate kit. For that the Blue Ox Kit part # BX7365 is the best option. It is very easy to use,...

  • To safely and legally flat tow your F-150 behind your Class A motorhome you will require a few items. The linked article will cover each of these in detail for you but the basic items needed are a tow bar, safety cables, a wiring/lighting kit of one kind or another, base plates, a braking system and a high/low hitch adapter to keep the connected tow bar level. • Yes, the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit part # BX2671 comes with all the hardware you will need for installation in addition to the safety cables that secure the base plates to the frame. • Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2016 Ford F-150 King Ranch with LED Tail Lights Behind an RV
  • For tow bar wiring for your 2016 Ford F-150 I recommend going with a magnetic kit # C-ATL20A. The issue is that the diode kits and converters that go with them are not rated for use with LED tail lights. The best option then is going to be a magnetic kit. And having a wireless system means you won't have to run any wires or worry about complicated installations on the truck. Since the lights are magnetic you may need to use tow light partners # TLP01 in the windows of the truck if the...

  • Troubleshooting 2018 Ford F-150 Raptor Off Road Skid Plate Issues with Blue Ox Baseplates
  • The Blue Ox Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms # BX2671 is the proper fit for your 2018 Ford Raptor. I reached out to my contact in their tech department and he said that just the 2017 Raptor in the instructions you will only install 2 of the 4 bolts you removed when you took the skid plate off. He said the skid plate may hang slightly lower due to that, but it won't be an issue. He said the safety cables on the brackets may just need to be held up during that installation to keep them...

  • What Circuit Does Red Wire of Roadmaster Brake Lite Relay Attach to
  • The reason the red wire of the Brake Lite Relay # RM-88400 runs to your fuse box is so that it can connect to a circuit that only sees power when the vehicle is on. This allows the relay to have power only when the vehicle is on. Obviously the circuit you are using now is not the correct once since the vehicle won't shift gears. Look for a different fuse circuit that would have power when the vehicle is on that would be less involved with the vehicle running like the "radio" fuse. The...
