Features to know about

Why Do I Need A Built-In Tongue Weight Scale?

Weigh Safe Pintle Hitch with Tongue Weight Scale

Without a built-in scale, you've got two choices: haul the trailer to a weigh station or mess with a separate gauge. This hitch saves that trip. The built-in scale shows how much tongue weight's pressing down on your truck. Too much squats the rear end and lifts your steering. Too little and the trailers dancing all over the road. Now you can balance your load before you ever leave the spot where you hooked up.

Do I Need Separate Hitches To Tow Different Trailers?

Weigh Safe Pintle Hitch with Pintle Hook Weigh Safe Pintle Hitch with Ball Mount

Many jobs use more than one kind of trailer. You might haul a skid steer on an equipment trailer in the morning and switch to a dump or cargo trailer that afternoon. Normally that means changing hitches or hauling extra gear, but not with this setup. The pintle hook and ball mount use the same assembly, so you can switch between them without unbolting or swapping anything on your truck. It's not just convenient, it's a real time saver.

Weigh Safe Pintle Hitch with Two Balls

The hitch includes 2" and 2-5/16" balls for standard couplers. The smaller size fits most utility trailers and landscape trailers, while the larger one handles heavier enclosed trailers and equipment trailers. You can swap them by pulling the pin and dropping in the other ball, which helps cut downtime when you need to make a quick switch.

If you have a heavy duty truck and you are always bouncing between different trailers, this Weigh Safe WS52ER pintle hitch really makes life easier. I like that the built in scale tells me right away if my load is balanced because I have seen too many guys at the jobsite guessing and then fighting sway down the highway. With this you hook up and know, no second guessing and no extra trip to the scales. I was impressed by how quick it is to go from the pintle hook for a skid steer trailer with a lunette ring to the two and five sixteenths ball for a big enclosed work trailer or even dropping to the two inch ball for something smaller like a camper. It is rated up to twenty two thousand pounds, and it feels like it, all steel, heavy in your hands, and built to take a beating. I do not love that it only works in the drop position, but most of the folks I see using this such as contractors, farmers, or RV owners hauling toy haulers are pulling tall, heavy trailers behind big trucks anyway. For that crowd, I think it is a really smart investment because it is safe, adaptable, and saves a lot of hassle when you are switching between jobs or heading out with different trailers on the weekend.

See what our Experts say about this Weigh Safe Pintle Hitch

  • Will Weigh Safe TW Scale Drop Hitch With Pintle And Balls Work In Rise Position?
That’s a great question, Cheryl. The Weigh Safe pintle hitch can technically be flipped into the rise position, but the pintle attachment itself may only be used in the drop position. Using the pintle in the rise orientation would void the manufacturer’s warranty because it changes how the scale and latch assembly bear weight. If you’re towing with the hitch balls, you can safely use it in either drop or rise, depending on what your setup needs. But whenever the pintle attachment is installed,...

  • Adjustable Drop Hitch With Built-In Scale That Has 2" Ball AND 2-5/16" Ball - 14k Equipment Trailer
Great question, Alan. The Weigh Safe # WS82ER is designed exactly for that scenario. It gives you a pintle hook for your lunette ring trailer, and it comes with both 2 inch and 2-5/16 inch hitch balls for standard couplers. Everything is built into the same shank, so you won’t need to swap hitches when switching trailers. Plus, the built-in scale makes it easy to confirm tongue weight right at hookup, so you’ll know if your equipment trailer is balanced before you hit the road. Do you...

  • Does 8" drop hitch with pintle and balls stick out more than 6" drop version from Weigh Safe?
Lucas, both the 8" drop pintle hitch with balls # WS59WR and the 6" drop pintle hitch with balls # WS82ER use the same heavy-duty shank design. The only difference is vertical adjustment, so the outward extension length is the same. No extra leverage or added distance from your truck with the 8 inch model. You'll love being able to quickly swap between pintle hitch, 2" ball, or 2-5/16" ball without using any tools. Have you measured your drop to verify how much you need? See attached photo.

  • How To Determine How Much Drop You Need To Get Trailer Level? Using Weigh Safe Pintle Hitch
Ray, measure from the ground to the top of your receiver and compare it to your trailer’s coupler or ring height when level. The # WS82ER has 6 inch of drop adjustment in 1 inch increments, so you’ll pick the slot that gets those two measurements even. That way your trailer rides level and brakes evenly. What type of trailer are you pulling?

  • What Size Drop Hitch For Lifted F250 Truck With Dump Trailer That Sits Too Low - 2" Receiver
Renee, since your truck sits taller, the # WS59WR with 8 inch drop is likely the better choice. Level towing is critical for braking and stability, and the extra gives you that adjustment margin. Both the 6 inch # WS82ER and 8 inch # WS59WR models are rated for 15,000 lbs GTW and 1,500 lbs tongue weight on a 2inch shank, so strength isn’t a concern. The decision really comes down to ride height. While the 8 inch should suffice, I’d measure from the ground to the top of your hitch receiver...

  • Is There A Hitch That Works With 2" Ball Coupler And Lunette Ring For Multiple Trailer Types?
Yes, Jason, long as your trailer has a 2" receiver, you'll be all set. The # WS82ER is versatile enough to handle both. The 2 inch ball works with your camper’s coupler, and the pintle handles your jobsite trailer. It's super easy to swap between balls or pintle hitch using the included key. What type of camper and trailer do you have, Jason?

  • Does Weigh Safe Pintle Hitch With Scale And Balls Have Locks That Come With It?
Hey Megan! The 2" Weigh Safe Pintle Hitches like # WS82ER and # WS59WR itself comes with the dual pin key lock assembly that secures the sliding pintle/ball mount in place. But for locking the whole shank into your receiver, you’ll want a separate hitch pin lock, like etrailer # e98882, to keep it secure when parked. Do you currently have a lunette ring trailer or is it a ball coupler?

  • Is There A Difference Between Weigh Safe Pintle Drop Hitch WS82ER And WS59WR?
Jeff, you’ve nailed it: the only difference is how much drop. Both handle 15K GTW / 1,500 lbs tongue weight, both come with the same pintle + ball setup, and both have the built-in scale. Go with the 6" drop # WS82ER if your truck's receiver doesn't sit more than 6" above your trailer's coupler. The 8" drop # WS59WR will be good if you’ve got a taller setup like a lifted pickup and small trailer where there is 7 or 8 inches between the two. Does that make sense? Let me know if you need...

  • Is The Tongue Weight Scale In The Weigh Safe Pintle Hitch With Balls Actually Necessary?
Steve, it’s definitely not a gimmick. The built-in scale on the # WS82ER shows you the tongue weight in real time as soon as the trailer is set on the ball or pintle. That’s huge because tongue weight should be about 10–15 of your total trailer weight. Too light and you risk sway, too heavy and you overload the rear axle. Instead of guessing or making a separate trip to a scale, you can check it right there while hooking up. I’ve seen customers avoid serious sway issues just by redistributing...

  • Does Weigh Safe Pintle Hitch For 2" Hitches WS82ER Have The Same Capacity On Pintle And Balls?
Good question, Hank. On the Weigh Safe Pintle Hitch for 2" hitches (with 2" and 2-5/16" balls) # WS82ER, the gross trailer weight rating is 15,000 lbs either way - pintle or ball. The tongue weight max is 1,500 lbs. You don’t lose capacity when switching between coupler styles. What type of trailer and coupler do you have?
